View Full Version : Residuals from DVD sales MichaelKeith 02-13-2009, 06:08 PM Does anyone know if Dick York's estate receives any money from the sales of the DVD releases? I certainly hope so! richieonline 02-13-2009, 08:46 PM Interesting question... i'm curious about any residuals for any of the actors or their estates... does anyone get anything? MickeyMac 02-14-2009, 02:53 PM After season 5, Liz Montgomery was given a percentage of the show, so based on that I am assuming her family gets some royalties. I am not sure if Dick York's family get anything. Marvo301 02-14-2009, 05:28 PM It didn't become common practice for actors to have residual payments built into their contracts until well into the 70's so it is unlikely anyone from this show (other than Liz as stated in previous post) is getting any money from the DVD sales. catlover79 10-04-2009, 07:02 PM I doubt it, but I could be wrong. Jude The Obscure 10-08-2009, 10:14 PM I highly doubt it as well......Although I do know Erin Murphy stated she got some residuals from the DVD sales of "Tabitha"--why?? because they used photos, footage and her voice saying "book" in the opening credits-- catlover79 10-08-2009, 10:18 PM I highly doubt it as well......Although I do know Erin Murphy stated she got some residuals from the DVD sales of "Tabitha"--why?? because they used photos, footage and her voice saying "book" in the opening credits-- At least she got something. Seriously, the residual issue is really sad when you think of someone like Dick York, who was so beloved by the public and died dirt poor. But he really did make lemonade out of lemons doing so much to raise money for the homeless and hungry. One of a kind. Jude The Obscure 10-08-2009, 10:20 PM Yes, and I'm sure that Dick has been rewarded far better than he could have ever been on Earth! I love his quote about Liz "She was sex all over!" :D catlover79 10-08-2009, 10:23 PM Yes, and I'm sure that Dick has been rewarded far better than he could have ever been on Earth! I love his quote about Liz "She was sex all over!" :D That's very true - Dick York got his reward and then some. I actually wrote to Joey York, c/o the book publisher and she wrote me back!! I still have the index card with her autograph on it - I keep it right next to my autograph from Bill Asher. Sam and Darrin's real life spouses at the time - how cool is that?? :D catlover79 10-08-2009, 10:28 PM Here is a fascinating article (with great pics!) of Dick York published after he passed away: http://www.bewitched.net/filmfax.htm Does anyone else cringe whenever Dick York (as Darrin) lights up on camera, knowing that one day he'd die from emphysema?? I want to yell: "NO!! DON'T SMOKE!! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!" :( Jude The Obscure 10-08-2009, 10:28 PM Awesome!!!! :) One day I will have to scan my Desi Arnaz autograph (not to me, but it is inscribed in a copy of "A Book", which was given to me!) comedyfreak 10-09-2009, 04:03 AM From what I understand none of the 60's sitcom actors got residuals, if they did it was for a short time only. The cast of Gilligan's Island talked about not receiving any residuals from the show. catlover79 10-09-2009, 04:12 AM From what I understand none of the 60's sitcom actors got residuals, if they did it was for a short time only. The cast of Gilligan's Island talked about not receiving any residuals from the show. Plus Susan Olsen has gone on the record stating that none of the Brady actors receive residuals, either. catlover79 10-09-2009, 04:13 AM Yes, and I'm sure that Dick has been rewarded far better than he could have ever been on Earth! I love his quote about Liz "She was sex all over!" :D Watching the episodes, it is pretty obvious how much he enjoyed those kissing scenes. MickeyMac 10-09-2009, 02:53 PM Here is a fascinating article (with great pics!) of Dick York published after he passed away: http://www.bewitched.net/filmfax.htm Does anyone else cringe whenever Dick York (as Darrin) lights up on camera, knowing that one day he'd die from emphysema?? BensonFan 10-09-2009, 04:29 PM Watching the episodes, it is pretty obvious how much he enjoyed those kissing scenes. Yeah, and it looked very natural. Did you ever notice that when Dick Sargent kissed Liz, he sort of wiggled his head back and forth? I don't know why, but that just drives me nuts everytime I see it. McGillicuddy 10-09-2009, 07:44 PM Does anyone know if Dick York's estate receives any money from the sales of the DVD releases? I certainly hope so! This is off the subject of Bewitched, but on the subject of residuals. On The Bob Newhart Show thread they made mention of furthur seasons of the show stalled because the cast, Bob Newhart, Bill Daly, Peter Bonerz, Marcia Wallace and Jack Riley get residuals from it, but no mention of the late Suzanne Pleshette. catlover79 10-09-2009, 08:25 PM Everytime I watch that, it breaks my heart. He was such a strong and a brave man. A true hero. Yes, he was. Perfectly said. :clap :clap :clap catlover79 10-09-2009, 08:32 PM Yeah, and it looked very natural. Did you ever notice that when Dick Sargent kissed Liz, he sort of wiggled his head back and forth? I don't know why, but that just drives me nuts everytime I see it. Very natural indeed. I still contend that EM & DY had the best sitcom romance/chemistry on TV. But did you also notice that DS didn't have half as much kissing scenes with Liz as DY did? BensonFan 10-10-2009, 12:57 AM Very natural indeed. I still contend that EM & DY had the best sitcom romance/chemistry on TV. But did you also notice that DS didn't have half as much kissing scenes with Liz as DY did? I didn't notice it but I believe it. He was probably uncomfortable doing it, ala Robert Reed on the Brady Bunch. catlover79 10-10-2009, 01:05 AM I didn't notice it but I believe it. He was probably uncomfortable doing it, ala Robert Reed on the Brady Bunch. Plus later on in DS's career he seemed to play more character-type parts, more villains, etc. He didn't seem to play many romantic leading man roles. Arfies 10-10-2009, 01:32 AM Yeah, and it looked very natural. Did you ever notice that when Dick Sargent kissed Liz, he sort of wiggled his head back and forth? I don't know why, but that just drives me nuts everytime I see it. I thought I was the only one who was bothered by Dick Sarget's wiggle-head thing. catlover79 10-10-2009, 01:38 AM I thought I was the only one who was bothered by Dick Sarget's wiggle-head thing. Yeah, I noticed it, too. BensonFan 10-10-2009, 10:50 AM I thought I was the only one who was bothered by Dick Sarget's wiggle-head thing. Not at all. I mean, I think very slight, very subtle head wiggling during kissing is normal, but he was wiggling back and forth like someone that bit into a big piece of taffy and was trying to pry his teeth loose from it. catlover79 10-10-2009, 04:31 PM This is off the subject of Bewitched, but on the subject of residuals. Yeah, I wonder if Suzanne Pleshette's estate gets anything - she was a widow at the time of her passing with no children of her own (she does have grown stepchildren). I don't know if she has any siblings, living or dead (her cousin John Pleshette was once a cast member of Knots Landing). Interestingly enough, there was a Bewitched/Bob Newhart Show connection. BNS guest star (and real-life father-in-law of Bob Newhart) Bill Quinn guested on the S4 Bewitched episode "Man of the Year". lecroixwalker 10-11-2009, 04:34 PM Yeah, I wonder if Suzanne Pleshette's estate gets anything - she was a widow at the time of her passing with no children of her own (she does have grown stepchildren). I've just finished watching her interview with the archive of TV and she said she was an only child so I don't know if that affects residual payments or if the persons estate even gets residuals. I know some dead actors make millions every year so they must  Interesting question though , I;d never thought of that before! catlover79 10-11-2009, 06:48 PM I've just finished watching her interview with the archive of TV and she said she was an only child so I don't know if that affects residual payments or if the persons estate even gets residuals. Interesting indeed! McGillicuddy 10-11-2009, 07:40 PM Interesting indeed! I would imagine there must be a time limit that estates of deceased co-stars of tv shows get residuals, but who knows how that works.  I guess I never thought about it. catlover79 10-11-2009, 07:51 PM I would imagine there must be a time limit that estates of deceased co-stars of tv shows get residuals, but who knows how that works.  I guess I never thought about it. I never thought about it, either, but it would be interesting if someone could find out. TeeVeeCloset 10-11-2009, 09:04 PM This is an extremely complicated issue....but to make it short and brief....in the 1950's and 1960's, actors had a choice to get paid less for their acting in exchange for a piece of the shows future, syndication was rarely thought of and actors usually thought their shows would play once and disappear....Audrey Meadows was an exception and was the only actor (besides Gleason) to get a piece of The Honeymooners till her death and beyond. Through the 70's, actors got less residuals each time an episode played....it usually ended after 5-10 runs....Many actors have reported getting 100 25 cent checks in one mailing from the screen actors guild. Residuals from future business from the series in the business is called getting money on "the backend". As for most classic series and actors, they get squat, the only one to get rich year after year are the studios. catlover79 10-11-2009, 10:49 PM This is an extremely complicated issue....but to make it short and brief....in the 1950's and 1960's, actors had a choice to get paid less for their acting in exchange for a piece of the shows future, syndication was rarely thought of and actors usually thought their shows would play once and disappear....Audrey Meadows was an exception and was the only actor (besides Gleason) to get a piece of The Honeymooners till her death and beyond. It's like a whole can of worms - it seems like actors like Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows and Elizabeth Montgomery (who with her then-husband, Bewitched producer/director Bill Asher, got a percentage of her show) were lucky and shrewd. |
