Laurie's portrayal of Jackie is probably the best acting on any television sitcom, ever. And yes, I'm including Lucy.

Laurie Metcalf is just amazing. You will never see a better actress.

It's 3:40am, I'm extremely tired and can barely keep my eyes open so I think I'll get some sleep and when I wake up, I'll come back to this thread to verify that my eyes weren't deceiving me.

I agree with you... I thought Metcalf's portrayal of Jackie was brilliant, and really nuanced. Some say she got weird in the later seasons, but that was due to the writing. I would say seasons 3-6 she was absolutely unstoppable in terms of likeability and talent. LOVED HER. There's a reason she won 3 emmys in a row.

Roseanne explains in Season 4 that Jackie's character was actually based on Barney Fife from the "Andy Griffth Show" and said that Laurie Metcalf even met with Don Knots to study his character and how to do that for the show.

I liked Jackie up until the last couple of years of 'Roseanne', when she became a blooming idiot.

I like her too (until seasons 8 and 9). I thought she was little more than a buffoon at the end. And the Don Knotts deal was dumb and unfunny. I do think she's very talented, though, and I feel very, very bad about what happened to her face.

I agree that it is Seasons 8 and 9 that her character just loses it's appeal and becomes WAY too crazy for my liking. Laurie Metcalf though is a very talented actress but I have to ask, what happened to her face? Anyway, I really have liked her on the Big Bang Theory playing Sheldon's mother. She is always hiliarous on there. :)

Laurie Metcalfe was very funny and talented on Roseanne, but toward the end of the series, her character did become a bumbling clown.

As great as "Jackie" was, she doesn't even compare to Lucy Ricardo/Lucielle Ball. Lucy was the greatest female comidienne of all time. There will never be another like her. She was truly awesome. To even compare "Jackie" to Lucy is ridiculous.

Actually, maybe nothing did happen to her face. I just always assumed she was in her fifties. Someone posted a picture and she looks closer to 70. That being the case, i'm not as frightened by her appearance.

^^^ Laurie does not look like she's 70, you loony! She looks like a normal 57 year old woman, for pity's sake! Not everybody gets The Lifestyle Lift!

Ignore the troll.

Anyway, Laurie's acting has always been superb in pretty much everything she does. I agree her character toward the end of Roseanne, though, was too wacky and embarrassingly over the top. I don't know if that was her intentions, Roseanne's, the crews, or all three, but the entire decision was wrong (as were most decisions from that point in the series).

I loved the show up until they won the lotto money. By then the show was just horrible and not even watchable.

Jackie was Looney Tunes in the end. I liked the early show 80's Jackie better. As the years progressed, she was just out there. She was still funny, though. She was too crazy. I was like "calm down, lady!"

I loved Jackie in the first few seasons but for me, the entire second half of the series (at least the last four seasons) she was nearly certifiable. That's no fault of Laurie Metcalf, of course...someone must have thought it would be funny to have the most grounded character on the show turn koo koo for Cocoa Puffs, making terrible decisions, screaming and yelling, acting like she's four years old.

Honestly, it was embarrassing to watch.

I didn't like LM's acting at the end either. But I do remember feeling so embarrassed, and yes, humiliated for her. As she flailed her arms wildly, enlargened her eyes to gargantuan proportions, and assumed a "goofy", over-the-top voice, I knew she was waiting. Waiting in vain for that laugh that would only come from a pre-recorded laugh track, that laugh that would never come from a real human's voice. I could tell how hard Laurie was trying and the sound of utter silence following each and every one off her jokes was so sad. I often thought that perhaps the stress of failing in front of billions of people precipitated a nervous breakdown which only strengthened her desire to try even harder to reincarnate Don Knotts. A sad, viscious cycle.

Season 1-5 is when I liked Jackie the most because I think that yeah you could see where she was somewhat messed up due to her up bringing but she was still reasonably normal. Though it was Season 6 when Jackie's character began for the worst I think and I believe this was the way of the writers trying to illustrate her relationship with Fisher and what his abuse had done to her mentally which was make her even more distrustful of men. Just my thoughts.

You could be onto something. But the deep damage to Laurie's psyche that was caused by the writer's decision is unforgivable. Can you imagine the anguish she felt as she cradled her three Emmy's tenderly in her arms as she watched her later, so very, very embarassing perforrmances? The tears in her eyes must have nearly obscured her vision. That poor, poor woman.

That is very sad. :( You know we are our own worst critic so while the cast and crew may not have thought her acting was that bad, looking back I am sure it is difficult for her to watch herself be so over the top in her performance.

You are right. We ARE our own worst critics. And can you imagine, as a reviewer, what scores Lairie gave herself? Of course, it is entirely possible that Laurie was pleased with her performance. She may even have swelled with pride at her achievement. But, more likely, she was engulfed with shame and self-loathing and despair. Whenever her children see these episodes, she must feel like crawling into a deep, dark hole in which all oxygen is depleted slowly and painfully from her body. She can run, but where can she hide? Reruns will haunt her forever, continually blackening her once stellar image until she is reduced to a mere shadow of her former self. She has to live each and every day with these memories until the day she dies. I wouldn't be surprised if she suffers from PTSD. Laurie didn't deserve this. No one does. No one.

CJ you really got to stop running your mouth about Laurie. I tried to ignore it and not say anything. But she is a great actress and a great human being. You should really keep your un-factual opinions, to yourself. Nobody cares to hear about it. especially on the Roseanne board. This is for fans.

Ob please don't misunderstand me. I too am a huge fan of the show and of all the actors. Ans I don't need Abilify as someone suggested. I don't always picture the world as a gloomy place. I'd like to think that Laurie finds solace and comfort from her three Emmys and her wonderful children. I'd like to picture her curled up under an afgan, her children by her side as they watch old episodes of Roseanne and Laurie can relive her days of glory. She can remember when life was different, when her acting was revered, not reviled. When she was good, she was just about the best out there. I hope she always remembers this. And when the voice of death continues to beckon, when it whispers her name louder and louder, she still has her three Emmys to caress and cherish.

And as further proof that I don't need Abilify, I just want to state for the record that I think Laurie used to be a very beautiful woman. She had a nice, earthy look with a very becoming natural glow. I am sorry that the hands of time have ravaged her face so mercilessly, so savagely. It reminds me of a teem of crows descending madly upon dead carcasses at the side of a road. But yes, Laurie was once a lovely woman.

Is somebody playing a practical joke or something? Are you being real? I think you're playing with everybody. What's up with all of this death stuff? I've had your back when it came to the others but you keep pushing the issue about Ms. Metcalfe and death. It's causing others to be offended. I've asked them to be more respectful but at the same time, you have to be respectful as well. Maybe its best that you leave this topic on the shelf for a little while. Its your decision, though.

If you're legit, I wanna see you enjoy your time on the forum and folks, just try be more understanding and patient. Hurting feelings isn't always the best thing. With that being said, Ciji, if this isn't a practical joke, then I'd stay off this topic and focus on something else. ;)

Bipolar disorder
Definition

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mood disorder that causes radical emotional changes and mood swings, from manic, restless highs to depressive, listless lows. Most bipolar individuals experience alternating episodes of mania and depression.

Treatment

Medication is the most effective treatment for bipolar disorder. A combination of mood stabilizing agents with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be used to regulate manic and depressive episodes.
Mood stabilizing agents are the most commonly prescribed drugs to treat bipolar disorder. Their function is to regulate the manic highs and lows of bipolar disorder. The following drugs are commonly used:

Lithium (Cibalith-S, Eskalith, Lithane, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithotabs) is one of the oldest and most frequently prescribed drugs available for the treatment of bipolar mania and depression. Because the drug takes four to ten days to reach a therapeutic level in the bloodstream, it sometimes is prescribed in conjunction with neuroleptics and/or benzodiazepines to provide more immediate relief of a manic episode. Lithium also has been shown to be effective in regulating bipolar depression, but is not recommended for mixed mania. Lithium may not be an effective long-term treatment option for rapid cyclers, who typically develop a tolerance for it or may not respond to it. Possible side effects of the drug include weight gain, thirst, nausea, and hand tremors. Prolonged lithium use also may cause hyperthyroidism (a disorder in which the thyroid is overactive, which may cause heart palpitations, nervousness, the presence of goiter, sweating, and a wide array of other symptoms.)

Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Atretol) is an anticonvulsant drug often prescribed in conjunction with other mood stabilizing agents. The drug may be used to treat bipolar patients who have not responded well to lithium therapy. Blurred vision and abnormal eye movement are two possible side effects of carbamazepine therapy.

Valproate (divalproex sodium, or Depakote; valproic acid, or Depakene) is one of the few drugs available that has been proven effective in treating rapid cycling bipolar and mixed states patients. Valproate is prescribed alone or in combination with carbamazepine and/or lithium. Stomach cramps, indigestion, diarrhea, hair loss, appetite loss, nausea, and unusual weight loss or gain are some of the common side effects of valproate.

SSRIs, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and paroxetine (Paxil), regulate depression by regulating levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Anxiety, diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, sweating, nausea, sexual problems, and insomnia are all possible side effects of SSRIs.

MAOIs such as tranylcypromine (Parnate) and phenelzine (Nardil) block the action of monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme in the central nervous system. Patients taking MAOIs must cut foods high in tyramine (found in aged cheeses and meats) out of their diet to avoid hypotensive side effects.

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is a heterocyclic antidepressant. The exact neurochemical mechanism of the drug is not known, but it has been effective in regulating bipolar depression in some patients. Side effects of bupropion include agitation, anxiety, confusion, tremor, dry mouth, fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, and insomnia.

I agree with this, she didn't feel like a supporting character since she was so good in that role. I can understand why she won award for that role
