View Full Version : The Birds & The Bees. Who told you?
Janice 02-09-2009, 07:35 PM In movies and on tv, the mother tells the daughter the facts of life, while the father tells the son. I've never known anyone who had this discussion.
When I was little, I remember my mother telling me that the stork delivers babies, but that's it. I actually found out how babies are made when I was about 11, and my best friend told me. Who told you, or did you just figure it out yourself? As a parent, did you ever have to give "the talk"?

Doodyville10019 02-09-2009, 07:42 PM To be honest, I actually don't remember who told me. But I don't think it was my parents.
catlover79 02-09-2009, 09:15 PM My mom gave me the talk. I think I was about 11 or 12. Not too long after, she chaperoned our class when we went to the Cleveland Health Museum to learn more about the subject. Needless to say, they split the boys and girls up.

They didn't have sex education when I was in school. I'm not even sure if they still do now.

I don't know either. If schools are still giving out free condoms, they should at least back it up with some sex ed.
sunshinefizzy 02-09-2009, 09:50 PM My mother did when I was 8 or 9. She was always straight forward with me when it came to stuff liek that. When I was 5 I asked her if the stork brought me. Nope, she said, you came out of my vagina. I think it's great she was so honest with me. I think I have such a healthy outlook on sex because of that.
MickeyMac 02-09-2009, 09:58 PM Nobody told me. Father wasnt around and my mother would have been to embarrased. I found out from friends, and from first hand experience.

I'm glad my parents never told me, If my Mom had told me that when I was five I'd probably have slapped her. Some people are open-minded about sex and have no trouble talking about it nor referring to some sexual innuendo everytime they open their mouth but I always found it rather embarrassing to talk about it especially with relatives.

I don't remember much about the talk, but my mom wasn't nearly that direct. I'm the oldest, so I was the one who broke them in. Not always a good thing, but they tried!!
Janice 02-09-2009, 10:55 PM I remember getting a safe sex lecture from my mother when I was around 15. My older sister was 16 when she got pregnant, so she figured she'd try to save me the aggravation.

My mom told me when I was thirteen, but I already knew for years from television and the internet. So it was more of an experience for her to give the talk than it was for me to hear it.... very uncomfortable. It was one of those milestones, though... and I'll never forget it.;)

My Mom And Dad aren't into discussing such things. They're very modest people.
I had a few Health classes in grade school that explained some things.
Some other things I still have a few questions about.

Brieannas21 02-10-2009, 01:37 AM When I was 11 or 12 my aunt told me first, and then later my mom told me again but she was more detailed. After all of that, In 7th grade we had sex ed

PZelda 02-10-2009, 06:36 AM From a book when I was 8 years old. Forgot the name of the title, but it was a sex ed book aimed at preteens (I was already reading high school books in third grade). Then I had sex ed in sixth grade.
justins5256 02-10-2009, 09:23 AM I think I was in third grade when my mom went to see the OBGYN for a refill on her birth control. I made a bad mistake and asked what the pills were for. She told me more than I ever wanted to know.
She did say that she knew I would probably hear a lot of BS from the kids at school about sex and she wanted me to know the truth. She has always been open and honest with me, so I guess in retrospect, she was doing the right thing. There is a lot of mis-information out there.
I had sex ed in high school. I remember it focused more on things like STDs, AIDs, pregnancy and contraception. They went over all options, including abstinence, but didn't stress one method/philosophy over another, which I think is cool.

My Dad gave me the talk, I was 12 or 13. He used visual aides, his Penthouse book.

:rotflmao: on a side note Lauren, that's one of my favorite episodes!
treky 02-10-2009, 09:56 AM now that I think about it, I think I figured it out from kids in high school, and my older brothers stash of Playboy magazines.
OH Nuts! 02-10-2009, 11:32 AM sadly pretty much "the back alley"

Well I know that not everyone would agree with my mother's openess and not everyone will share my pov on the matter. She just knew I was curious and she made a vow that she would tell her kids the truth when they asked such things. I'm glad she didn't skirt the issue because I don't think I would trust her as much as I would now.
ekkostar 02-10-2009, 07:34 PM Started with my mother, but because I was a teenager around the time the internet boom happened (around 1997), I got a lot of my information through the internet. Oh how I long for the days of awkward text-based cybersex on Yahoo Chat during the middle of the afternoon!

*Pleasant Tomorrow* 02-10-2009, 11:40 PM Between my best friend who seemed to know everything at a very young age and health classes I started taking when I was 11...I put two and two together and figured things out eventually. My parents told me NOTHING.

JamesG 02-13-2009, 03:26 AM My dad was the one that told me about it; I think I might have been around 10 or 11.
Later on everything I wanted to find out was courtesty of the internet. I spent many days as a teen on alt.discussion forums talking about a lot of... stuff.
Big C 02-13-2009, 04:38 PM My parents told me about it.
Also, watching a lot of hot girls on TV contributed. (Angie, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Christina Applegate, and the Baywatch babes) to that.
That's when I realized that it was O.K to admire pretty girls.
