View Full Version : Rick's Wedding Ring
Jude The Obscure 02-03-2009, 11:59 AM The episode that introduces us to Kris as Rick's wife. We never saw him dating her, much less a wedding, on the show. They just went, voila, here's Kris, Mrs. Rick Nelson! I bet long time viewers were thrown for a loop. I also wonder if Kris was pregnant (early stages) when she filmed this episode as they only showed her carefully from the waist up.
In any case, a nice little miunderstanding that rolls into a big snowball of confusion affecting Dave and June (she isn't seen though), Wally and Ginger ("Don't you sweetie pie, me, fatso!") and even Ozzie and Harriet.
I loved seeing Rick singing his "Fools Rush In" hit.....one that mostly gets ignored by the oldies station here.
Janine the Dream 02-03-2009, 12:49 PM I may have seen this episode years ago. Is there an outtake shown at the end of the show?
ILUVO&H 02-03-2009, 02:14 PM Janine I think you are thinking of the episode about Rick and Kris's Wedding Picture. That has the outtake of Skip splitting his pants in a scene.
Jude, when I watched Ricks Wedding Ring, I could notice too how they were kiding Kris' pregnancy.
When both Dave and Rick married on the show, it did seem odd since up until we see the new wives both Dave and Rick were running around with a new girl every week.
MickeyMac 02-03-2009, 06:53 PM I think one of the reasons Kris' pregnancy was hidden because their first child was concived before Rick and Kris were married.
Jude The Obscure 02-03-2009, 07:44 PM ^Yes, that fact was certainly played up in the made for TV bio about the Nelsons that ABC aired several years ago. I was shocked!

 They sure weren't as wholesome as the show portrayed them. But then, who was?
Jude The Obscure 02-03-2009, 08:52 PM ^that fact and that David married a former Playboy model--oh my!! them Nelson boys sure were....uhmmmmm....men!

That's a good way to put it.
MickeyMac 02-03-2009, 09:55 PM back then(and still now)there were probably young and older TV stars would have loved to hook up with a playboy model.
catlover79 02-03-2009, 10:17 PM That's true, and this is also the time when Desi Arnaz was cheating left and right when he and Lucy were supposedly the happiest couple on Earth. Then again, they didn't have the likes of TMZ on their heels at all times like today.
Jude The Obscure 02-04-2009, 09:46 AM oh TMZ is disgusting......and sadly the other entertainment shows seem to be in the same direction.

There was a bio movie?! What actors played them? I'd love to see that!
Jude The Obscure 02-04-2009, 10:01 AM ^Check on the info at imdb.com Don't think it has been released on DVD.

Dan Tullis 04-17-2009, 07:02 PM June was in an ep as Dave's secretary before she married him, but her name wasn't June in the episode. They did use it in a flashback scene later on, though, when June worked in the office as a sub for Connie.
ILUVO&H 04-17-2009, 09:30 PM When Kris Nelson was plugging her book Out of My Mind back in the late 90's I caught her on the Gayle King Show and taped it. Kris said that when she and Rick married, Harriet gave her one piece of advice.
Harriet, who used to sing in a band and travel with a band and knew all about life on the road in a band, advised her new daughter in-law to never surprise him on the road by showing up unexpectedly.
Jude The Obscure 04-27-2009, 11:58 PM hmmmmmm, was Harriet hinting that Ricky was a "playa"? And that Ozzie did the same to her?
Dan Tullis 04-28-2009, 09:40 PM Can't imagine Ozzie fooling around on Harriet, but it's well known that Rick and Kris did not have a happy marriage - at least, not in the later years. Rick's last girlfriend, Helen, traveled with him on all his tours circa 1983-85, maybe Rick did not want the temptation that would be there without Helen by his side. If some girl offered herself to Rick, he could just say "uh, gee, I, uh, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend Helen. Uh, Helen...?"

Like I said, things sure were different than they were on TV!!
ILUVO&H 04-29-2009, 12:10 AM hmmmmmm, was Harriet hinting that Ricky was a "playa"? And that Ozzie did the same to her?
Well, I don't know if Harriet was talking about Ozzie or not.. Personally I never took it as she was (nor do I want to lol), but of what she knows happens on the road because she was on the road.
Remember Harriet was there WITH Ozzie on the road all the time because she was part of the band. But there were lots of other men from their Orchestra touring with them. Ozzie and Harriet met through Ozzie inviting her to join the band. So, they fell in love on the road.
I don't know how many of you knew this, but Harriet was already married when she met Ozzie. It was spoken of in the A&E Biography. That's where I first heard about it. Apparently Harriet's first husband was a heavy drinker/alcoholic and quite abusive to Harriet. Ozzie and his knowledge of law, helped her in obtaining a divorce.
Dusty's Fan 04-29-2009, 06:52 AM I wonder what the name of Harriet's first husband was?
Harriet may have gone by four names in her lifetime:
Birth name: Peggy Lou Snyder
First married name: ?
Stage name: Harriet Hilliard (some claim that Hilliard was her dad's first name?)
Name following marriage to Ozzie: Harriet Nelson
ILUVO&H 04-29-2009, 01:27 PM Harriet's fathers name was Roy Snyder. Her mothers name was Hazel. Roy used the surname Hilliard as his stage name.
I saw it mentioned in one place of Roys name being Roy Hilliard Snyder, so maybe Hilliard was his middle name. Or maybe whoever wrote it just tagged on his stage name. Hazel was also in showbiz. Harriets first appearance on stage was at age 6 months when she was carried out during one of her parents performances. Harriet taking on Hilliard seems to be her taking on the familys stage name. I wonder why she changed her name to Harriet though? Did she just think it went better with Hilliard than Peggy Lou? Personally I like Peggy Lou or just Peggy better than Harriet. But I can't imagine anyone calling her anything but Harriet. lol :D
Back when I was high school, I had found some old Who's Who in America books from the 40's. They were big green bound books with biographies on all sorts of people from that time. I swear the books hadn't been cracked opened in 25 years, lol, but I found them in hoping to find Ozzie and Harriet in them. One of them had an entry on Ozzie and Harriet. It gave quite through biography on both of them. I had even taken noted on them. This was almost 25 years ago and I was just a kid so where those notes ever went I hadn't a clue, but I wish I still had them.
I read the entry quite a few times and from my fuzzy memory, I seem to remember something about Harriet's father not being in the picture for very long. He seemed to have left the family with no further contact. While her parents were struggling entertainers in New York, Harriet stayed behind in Iowa with a Grandmother and Aunt. I remember thinking how it sounded like Harriet didn't have a very good childhood. Harriet was in her mid-late teens 17 I think, when she left Iowa to try her luck as a dancer in New York.
Ozzie seemed to have had a pretty good childhood in New Jersey growing up with brother Al. He was involved in all sorts of activities. Where he found the time for everything he was involved with I don't know. Don't quote me on this but I seem to remember something about his parents also being in show business.
His brother Don was born when Ozzie was in his late teens. Ozzie's father died not long after. I remember the biography speaking of how Ozzie took on the role of being a father figure to Don and feeling a great responsibility to now take care of his mother and young brother. Maybe that's how he got involved in so many different things, and taking on so many different jobs while in high school and college. Aside from needing the money to put himself through college he also needed the money to help support his mother and brother.
I wish I knew about brother Al and what happened to him. And I wish I knew who Barbara Nelson (Eisler in the credits) was married to. Don or Al; probably Don and what happened with her. She was quite a few episodes. And her daughters were in a few as well. I wonder what happened to them too. ??
Dusty's Fan 04-29-2009, 04:14 PM Thanks for all the great info. In my state there was a famous high school sports announcer whose first name was Hilliard. I guess at one time it wasn't too uncommon as a boy's name. And it has a nice ring to it as a middle name...!
It would be great to see and hear more from the extended family. It was always interesting to see the children pop up in episodes.
OH Nuts! 04-29-2009, 08:52 PM I remember reading in one of the bios on Rick that Ozzie may have helped Harriet get out of her first marriage. She was the singer in his band at the time. An Ozzie was practically a lawyer anyways, he would have been one had his band not taken off.
As for the ep, it's definitely a real cute one. And poor Wally - getting in trouble with Ginger again - but what was unusual was the other fellas sort of getting into the doghouse too. Like that Ginger & Wally made up in the end (but they usually do though). And that Virginia really did know the score all along.
And yes I remember from the bio on Rick that women threw themselves at him EVERYWHERE.

And yes I remember from the bio on Rick that women threw themselves at him EVERYWHERE. Rick talked in interviews about girls tearing his clothes off, scratching him, anything to get close to him. Even in later years, the irrepressible one had quite an affect on the ladies. I saw women get a kiss from him, and walk away saying "I'll never wash my cheek again!" I know it sounds unbelievable, but this really happened, even when he was 40-something years old. Fortunately, Rick was not big headed or arrogant about it. Unlike some rock stars
