View Full Version : What happened to "Jump the Shark"? Chocoholic 01-29-2009, 08:28 PM www.jumptheshark.com Looks like another great website has kicked the dust :( JamesG 01-29-2009, 08:35 PM Perhaps they finally jumped the shark? ...that was dumb I know. Didn't realize the site was down. haven't checked there in a while. dawsongirl 01-29-2009, 09:14 PM I was just there a few days ago and it was up. Okay, wtf? WHERE THE HELL DID THE USER COMMENTS GO?? I loved going there and reading snark. FU, TV Guide. catlover79 01-29-2009, 09:16 PM I was just there a few days ago and it was up. Same here. Janice 01-29-2009, 09:17 PM I don't know what happened, but while we're on the topic....does anyone know if Henry Winkler has ever commented on the JTS phrase? His character was the catalyst, after all. catlover79 01-29-2009, 09:25 PM I don't know what happened, but while we're on the topic....does anyone know if Henry Winkler has ever commented on the JTS phrase? His character was the catalyst, after all. I think he talked about it in the Happy Days 30-year reunion special. Zebra 3 01-31-2009, 07:52 PM I don't know what happened, but while we're on the topic....does anyone know if Henry Winkler has ever commented on the JTS phrase? His character was the catalyst, after all. Yes he did and he's not laughing. Janice 01-31-2009, 08:01 PM Yes he did and he's not laughing. Care to explain or should I guess? robyrob 01-31-2009, 08:26 PM he made light of it and even pointed out that he's the only actor to have literally jumped the shark on two different shows - referring to his appearance on Arrested Development when his character Barry Zuckerkorn jumped over a shark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QiOJKptsz0 Zebra 3 01-31-2009, 09:12 PM Care to explain or should I guess? I read a Henry Winkler interview a few years back in which he got defensive about the term Jump The Shark and Happy Days (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=12). I think he talked about it in the Happy Days 30-year reunion special. They did. he made light of it and even pointed out that he's the only actor to have literally jumped the shark on two different shows - referring to his appearance on Arrested Development when his character Barry Zuckerkorn jumped over a shark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QiOJKptsz0 Notice he makes light of jumping a shark twice in his career, but remains defensive on the term used against his sitcom. Mr. Television 01-31-2009, 09:17 PM I haven't been there in awhile. Did TV Guide buy JTS? catlover79 01-31-2009, 09:23 PM I haven't been there in awhile. Did TV Guide buy JTS? Something like that. The site hasn't been the same since they merged with TV Guide - it's been one big commercial for the magazine. ohno: Mr. Television 01-31-2009, 09:36 PM Something like that. I think I got it now. :) No problem!! browneyes106 01-31-2009, 10:37 PM I didn't know JTS merging with TV Guide until seeing this thread. I will definetely miss the old JTS. Mr. Television 01-31-2009, 10:51 PM You used to go to TV Tome? Because I would blog on tv.com sometimes. I used to go there all the time. I even contributed some to the episode guides. I rarely go to TV.Com. It just isn't the same. dawsongirl 02-01-2009, 12:03 AM Jump the Shark jumped the shark. THAT'S Irony. Where am I going to go for snarking lols now? The Family Feud postings sometimes made me laugh so much I couldn't breathe. ekkostar 02-01-2009, 10:23 AM I hated when TV Now merged with TV Guide's website as well. The last time I tried to post on Jump The Shark was to say how terrible the character Carl Sack was and it never went through because now they're filtering results. It sucks because you used to be able to be ultra-negative because it was the point. If you were p!ssed off at a show, you could emote about it. They've become so cut-and-dried and it sucks. Now they're no better than that terrible hipster site Television Without Pity (I hate that GUSHING they do about every stupid show and the little cutsy nicknames with exclamation marks (i.e., Action!Dan) they give characters). That's another website that I don't use anymore. It used to be very easy to navigate and they listed everything. The new TV Now just sucks. MrCleveland 02-01-2009, 01:33 PM I used to go there all the time. I even contributed some to the episode guides. I rarely go to TV.Com. It just isn't the same. The reason why I asked was that I would go there once in awhile make reviews and all that. And I use the same name as I do here. Chocoholic 02-01-2009, 01:35 PM TV Guide itself jumped the shark a few years ago. Mr. Television 02-01-2009, 02:55 PM TV Guide itself jumped the shark a few years ago. They don't even list the CW in their grids anymore. catlover79 02-02-2009, 11:23 PM TV Guide itself jumped the shark a few years ago. I think that was when they revamped the magazine and made it bigger - not pocketbook size like it was before. Just my take... TVFactFan 02-03-2009, 01:24 AM JTS is now phased out??-lol Damm, what's next? I even contributed some to the episode guides. I rarely go to TV.Com. It just isn't the same. I was perfectly willing to go there when TV.Com bought them out, but when I tried to sign in, I couldn't do anything there. As for Jump the Shark, at least when you post something there, you're more likley to see it turn up. littlebelle 02-04-2009, 05:20 PM JTS is still working fine for me. Try finding the show you want through index, rather then the search bar. Ohio8 02-04-2009, 06:00 PM The new JTS SUCKS. I loved the comments by the site's visitors.  catlover79 02-04-2009, 08:21 PM The new JTS SUCKS. I can't find it on the front page! :wallbang Goldilocks 02-05-2009, 09:56 AM This is frustrating! I have frequented JTS for years and feel almost lost without being able to read it! The site's visitor's comments were the funniest thing ever. If I was having a bad day, I could just go read JTS comments and LMAO! Esp. the comments on "Highway to Heaven". brownie87 02-05-2009, 11:17 AM Well, apparently, JTS is yet another sad example of how everything has to suddenly be "family friendly" to appeal to the little kiddies!! Just so politically correct all the time!! ARGH!!!!! Jude The Obscure 02-05-2009, 12:39 PM Hey, I'd watch it. Watch it? Monika dahlin', you would be tonight's SPECIAL GUEST STAR! catlover79 02-05-2009, 02:50 PM Watch it? Monika dahlin', you would be tonight's SPECIAL GUEST STAR! Uh oh - is this a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE??  Chocoholic 02-05-2009, 03:37 PM Uh oh - is this a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE??  Yes, it's the episode where the restaurant burns down on the night she's supposed to marry her lover, but her pregnant long-lost sister arrives and goes into labor while her teen cousin overdoses on caffeine pills and learns a valuable lesson on not taking drugs. Meanwhile, her other teen cousin learns a valuable lesson in the importance of honesty when his girlfriend finds out she's going into labor. Amazingly, she's in the same hospital room with the long-lost siter, who argues with her family, but after the birth of her twins who will enter toodlerhood overnight, she tells her parents she loves them and everybody cries. Then the grandfather's plane is shot down and he doesn't survive, so the family has to now learn an important leson on love and loss. Some other stuff happens, but amazingly, all the problems are solved in half an hour. ;) catlover79 02-05-2009, 05:03 PM ^  :brent Sharop 02-05-2009, 05:51 PM Now they're no better than that terrible hipster site Television Without Pity (I hate that GUSHING they do about every stupid show and the little cutsy nicknames with exclamation marks (i.e., Action!Dan) they give characters). What's wrong with being a hipster? I like Television Without Pity. I found some good threads discussing some of my favourite shows there. Including some obscure ones, such as Ghostwriter. H. E. Pennypacker 02-07-2009, 05:53 PM Well this both sucks and blows - I used to love Jump the Shark, the complete randomness of the commenters and because the posters were anonymous the comments were completely over the top. When TV guide took it over my visits were less frequent - they let advertising overrun the site and the practice of usernames and moderated approval has led to bland fanboy fights rather than insightful off-colour remarks Now this morning after about 2 months I decided to look in on some shows and it's gone altogether? Curse you TV Guide and Hein - you sold out man. kitchenbreak 02-07-2009, 08:12 PM Sign the petition below to save Jumpedtheshark. I don't like the new format at all. JamesG 02-08-2009, 07:44 AM I admit that I was never a frequent visitor of that site; but the way it looks now really sucks. I remember they had Ted McGinley as the patron of jumptheshark; something along the lines of that shows are near the end of their run when Ted joins the cast. I'm sorry but some use the term "jump the shark" for pretty much everything, an episode of a show sucks and suddenly the show has "jumped the shark" TMC 02-15-2009, 01:26 AM I always thought jump the shark was one of the dumbest things ever. PracTz 02-15-2009, 01:18 PM What frustrates me the most about this move is that they didn't even have the decency to 'grandfather' the posts dating back 11+ years when they revamped the site. OK, I get that they wanted to take it over and may not have liked the idea of folks being able to dis the shows they were heavily pitching but couldn't they have at least left the old posts intact for those who'd like to look back at them? They seem to have even kept the older posts from being cached by Google! I know a great deal of the older posts were junk (and some were downright offensive and even creepy) but I'm furious that we no longer even have the option to read it for ourselves! Will a petition be able to restore the ability to do so? D-Dey 02-15-2009, 07:20 PM JTS is still working fine for me. Try finding the show you want through index, rather then the search bar.
