View Full Version : Great TV Shows That Hit the Wall in Season 2 TMC 01-27-2009, 02:12 AM In other words, what are some shows (in your humble opinion) that had a GREAT first season and unfortunately fell apart (call it "The Sophmore Jinx") when they came back? Discuss! catlover79 01-27-2009, 02:25 AM Mork & Mindy - dumping the dad and grandma was a HUGE mistake. Jude The Obscure 01-27-2009, 02:44 AM Hanging with Mr. Cooper-- no more Dawnn Lewis and the addition of Sandra Quartermann and Raven-Symone....the series lost its edge and humor IMO. Not to mention that lame "soul man" cover used for a theme song. megamanj2004 01-27-2009, 03:43 AM Mork & Mindy - dumping the dad and grandma was a HUGE mistake. BIG-TIME MISTAKE! As much as I liked the disco-fied version of the theme song in S2, that didn't help matters for S2. And it never recovered much after S2. I got another one: John Larroquette Show, The - after S1, NBC dissected this show's cutting edge sparks it had in S1 by meddling with the show and dissecting it piece by piece, starting w/ S2. What's Happening Now!! - once Fred "Rerun" Berry was dismissed from the show at the end of S1, this show already began its remaining 40 ep.+ dip to Nowheresville. To make matters worse, they brought in an unknown Martin Lawrence and it didn't help matters, either. 70s show watcher 01-27-2009, 04:03 AM aftermash they actully had a pretty good first season but the network thought they knew how to quote unquote fik the show and of course took away whatever good points and charm the show had Mikado 01-27-2009, 05:40 AM Lost in Space ...it began as a serious Sci-fi in the first season, then became almost a kid's show in year two....year three pulled back a bit and became a happy medium of the first two seasons, but, it was too late to save it! I forget the name but, there was a show about an adult paper boy, who lived at home, on Fox (Starring Chris Elliot). The show was kind of stupid , but, absolutely hilarious...Fox decided to fudge with the concept in season 2 and the show died soon after. Fox pretty much did the same thing to Herman's Head, also! catlover79 01-27-2009, 09:51 AM ^ Mikey, the Chris Elliott show was entitled Get a Life. One of its directors was none other than Tony Dow aka Wally Cleaver!! Goldilocks 01-27-2009, 12:03 PM Joan of Arcadia went downhill in Season 2. It's a shame too; that show had alot of potential and what a cast! GeorgeWBushGOP 01-27-2009, 09:54 PM Get a Life was a cult show. It didn't hit the wall in season two. The people at fox hated the show and disposed of it. I guess Married with Children was enough to swallow. I would say a show that hit a wall in its second season was Eight Simple Rules!! Even though it was not a mega hit it's first season. and went on for a third. That show just got too damn depressing. catlover79 01-27-2009, 09:57 PM ^ Had John Ritter lived, that show would still be on the air today...I truly believe it. GeorgeWBushGOP 01-27-2009, 10:20 PM it might have went on in a different direction for certain... but it would not have been on today.. The two actors who played the daughters are all grown up. It would have ran out of gas. But we will never know since Ritter died suddenly. catlover79 01-27-2009, 10:25 PM ^ It might have run while the kids were in college - after all, Married With Children lasted 10 years. My Three Sons ran for 12 years!! 8SR debuted in the fall of 2002, so I still think it would still be on had John Ritter lived. But as you said, we'll never know for sure. :( jimpickens 01-27-2009, 11:30 PM Buffalo Bill the first season was hilarious but when they decided to make him more likable in the second season that killed it for me. Mikado 01-27-2009, 11:36 PM ^ Mikey, the Chris Elliott show was entitled Get a Life. One of its directors was none other than Tony Dow aka Wally Cleaver!!Thx Cat  janet42 01-28-2009, 12:08 AM Just the 10 of Us had a wonderful first season and then it went downhill in the second season. catlover79 01-28-2009, 12:11 AM Thx Cat  Anytime, Mikey!! Chocoholic 01-28-2009, 11:12 AM I liked My Name is Earl the first season, then lost all interest. I forgot about The John Larroquette Show. It started off so good, but NBC had to have it retooled. GeorgeWBushGOP 01-28-2009, 12:12 PM Buffalo Bill the first season was hilarious but when they decided to make him more likable in the second season that killed it for me. I loved that show and you are so right. NBC got complaints about that show. and caves. Incredible. The whole reason the show worked was because the character was nasty and so unlikable. Why change what works? There was a one season show called "It's Your Move" that also aired the same time on NBC Parents complained that kids were copying the same antics as jason bateman's character. so they changed the format towards the end of the first season and that was that!! Heidi Dawn 01-28-2009, 03:46 PM I have to agree about 'Hangin' With Mr. Cooper'. It was great the first season because it reminded me of an African-American version of 'Three's Company'. I stopped watching after Dawnn Lewis left, she was great. 'Family Matters' was good in the first season, not so good in the following years. Too much Urkel, he was so annoying. steevo 01-28-2009, 08:50 PM Andromeda- Had a great first season, then Robert Hewitt Wolfe leaves in season two, the show becomes a mess, and I lost all interest. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century- They made too much like Star Trek in season two. Seaquest DSV- I list it here beacuse they dumped Stephanie Beaucham. They butchered it further in season 3 before it was mercifully cancelled. Of course, others mentioned Mork and Mindy, and I totally agree. I believe it could have lasted longer if ABC hadn't tinkered with it in season two. catlover79 01-28-2009, 09:02 PM The moral of this story - networks who tamper with a hit are EVIL!!!! repeatshistory 01-28-2009, 10:25 PM Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place was a great show the first season. Then the network dumped Julius Carry, David Ogden Stiers, and the ENTIRE PREMISE of the first season, and trotted off into medocrity and Friends copying! repeatshistory 01-28-2009, 10:28 PM The moral of this story - networks who tamper with a hit are EVIL!!!! I think you can leave out 'who tamper with a hit' from that sentence and still be accurate! catlover79 01-28-2009, 10:29 PM I think you can leave out 'who tamper with a hit' from that sentence and still be accurate! You're totally right - NETWORKS ARE EVIL!!!!  Rosslover 01-28-2009, 10:56 PM JOEY comes to mind . First of all, NBC gave it all this press in Season One. It was funny but everyone came to understand that it was not FRIENDS. Season 2 was a big disappointment with Joey and John Larroquette . Then came Joey with his father at his movie premiere .Anyone who knows anything about Joey knows his father did not support his career, but his five friends did, especially one. 70s show watcher 01-29-2009, 01:02 PM Buffalo Bill the first season was hilarious but when they decided to make him more likable in the second season that killed it for me.yes and it was also very odd that nbc head brandon tartikoff would try to change the show like he did since he admitted to liking the show just as it had been cleverfun3000 01-29-2009, 01:23 PM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3114/3237102624_5ebc7fcc8e_o.gif The show was mercilessly tweaked and went from being a hip in the know kinda show to a confusing unfunny series of rapid fire jokes that never hit their mark. megamanj2004 01-31-2009, 03:10 PM Nurses - The second season went from a blend of serious and comical to somewhat slapstick w/ the arrival of Jack Trenton. jimpickens 01-31-2009, 10:34 PM The irony is that if Buffalo Bill would've debuted in the 2,000s or even the late 90s the character would've never changed in fact they would've probably made him so over the top it would've been borderline cartoonish. Nighthawk76 02-01-2009, 02:45 AM Charles In Charge-The show didn't get bad after the first season, but it was dummed down quite a bit. During the first season it was a sweet family sitcom and from season two onward it became mostly slapstick. TJL 02-01-2009, 06:14 AM One of my favorite shows from early in this decade was NBC's Ed, and it is a perfect example of a show that went through a serious "sophomore slump." The show started out as a quirky hour long comedy/drama with a greater emphasis on the comedy, with bowling alley lawyer Ed Stevens juggling his law practice (which usually involved some quirky local resident with some out of the ordinary legal problem) while dealing with his funny friends and co-workers at the Stuckeybowl, and his crush on Carol, a woman he loved from afar in High School. Every single episode of the first season was a gem. Then in season two, they abandoned pretty much everything that made the show so charming, giving us more of the Ed and Carol "will they or won't they" melodrama that made the show well, a melodrama. They treid to fix things in season 3 - and lots of us Ed fans here on the Sitcoms Online boards were amazed NBC gave them a season 3, but by then it ws too late. Ed was a good show, but they tinkered with it too much. They should have kept it light. |
