The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today announced that they have dismissed head coach Jon Gruden and General Manager Bruce Allen, according a two-paragraph release on the Bucs' web site.

"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer in the announcement. "However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."

I don't think anyone is surprised since he decided to go with Jeff Garcia over Brian Griese which caused the COLLASPE from 9-3 to 9-7

I didn't see this one coming either, but it is time for a change in Tampa Bay.

This is why Gruden was fired, since winning the SB here is what happened

2003 season-no playoffs
2004 season-no playoffs
2005 season-1st round playoff lost to skins
2006-no playoffs
2007-1st round playoff lost to giants
2008-no playoffs after 9-3


So after looking at that no one should be surprised

I'm not a Buccaneers fan, but IMHO you don't fire a head coach who won a Super Bowl for you -- period. How many current, active head coaches have won one? Only Belichick, Coughlin, and a not even a couple others now that Gruden has been canned and Dungy has resigned. I'm sorry Tampa Bay fans, but for your team to return to the Super Bowl, canning a proven head coach is not the answer.

Look at the history of franchises post-SB won:

No Super Bowl wins for Chicago after Ditka.
No Super Bowl wins for St. Louis after Vermeil
No Super Bowl wins for Miami after Shula
No Super Bowl wins for Pittsburgh after Cowher
Only one Super Bowl win for Dallas immediately after J. Johnson

And there have been no Super Bowl appearances for Buffalo after Levy

I'm not saying that these teams had poor coaches after those listed, but don't you think in each case they would have been better off with these coaches staying on? The Steelers are the only team still alive this year from my list.

So according to you, if you win a SB as a headcoach he can just go 0-16 the next 6 years.

Ask a fan of the Eagles, Bills, Titans, Chargers, Cardinals, Texans, or Seahawks if they would be willing to go 0-16 for 6 years after a Super Bowl Championship. I would take that, even though you're taking it to a ridiculous extreme to try to make me look bad.

Well Baltimore is one win away from a SB the year after Brian Billick was fired. Some coaches just wear out their welcome. I think it was time for Grudin to go. He won his SB with Dungy's team and has done nothing much since. And losing to the Oakland Raiders with a playoff spot on the line after being 9-3 at one point is ridiculous.

I respect your opinion, but I just value a world championship more highly than the records of the years that follow. How many people even in Chicago can recall any of the Bears' records in the years other than Ditka's win or Smith's appearance?

If you're a hardcore fan, the W-L record and the playoff performance are very important. But to many, getting to the big show is the thing, and winning it even moreso. Lots of good teams missed the playoffs this year, which is not surprising given the size of the league and the stepped-up level of competition (parity is real).

The Point you are missing is that he was PAID to get the team more SB's or back in contention to get another SB and he didn't do that.
