Dr. Loveless 02-02-2013, 03:36 PM that wasn't a parody of the NBC show REAL PEOPLE just the PBS show REAL PEOPLE. I respectfully disagree. The footage of Herb Tarlek and his family were loosely modelled after the 10-part PBS documentary series, AN AMERICAN FAMILY (1973, which focused on the typical American family, the Louds), which was still very famous at the time WKRP was on the air. In fact, Albert Brooks made a feature film parody of it, REAL LIFE (1979), which was probably also a big influence on the WKRP episode being written. The tv studio stuff with the on-camera co-hosts and the live studio audience (which the dead-serious AN AMERICAN FAMILY didn't have), their voiceover interaction with the Tarleks and the WKRP staff, plus the design of the 'REAL FAMILIES' title logo were clearly patterned after NBC's very popular REAL PEOPLE series (leading to a mini-boom of that format of programming, like THAT'S INCREDIBLE!, THOSE AMAZING ANIMALS and SPEAK UP AMERICA!), which debuted over a year before WKRP did their 'REAL FAMILIES' episode. What's more, I don't know about you, but I was around back then, and watched both REAL PEOPLE and WKRP regularly in their original network runs (and caught a rebroadcast of AN AMERICAN FAMILY around that time, maybe a little afterward), and got the joke. Also, PBS never had a nationally-broadcast series called REAL PEOPLE, certainly not during or before WKRP's original run; maybe you're thinking of something with a different title. catlover79 02-02-2013, 07:23 PM Monk had an episode involving the attempted killing of a former child star of a show called "The Cooper Clan", which was a very obvious parody of The Brady Bunch. JamesG 02-02-2013, 10:31 PM The "Diff'rent Strokes" episode 'Green Hair' was a parody of "The Brady Bunch's" episode when Greg gets orange hair. I think they just did a similar storyline. treky 04-16-2013, 12:10 AM SNL has done parodys of STAR TREK many times. One of the funniest though, was way back in the first season (1975) with John Belusi as Kirk, Chevy Chase as Spock and Dan Ackroyd as Dr. McCoy. |
