View Full Version : Are any other women besides be offended by "Bride Wars"????
Maddison 01-09-2009, 05:09 PM So, judging by the rash of female-based comedies that have been surfacing ("Legally Blonde", "Clueless", "The House Bunny", "Baby Mama" and now "Bride Wars"), apparently the only ways that women can actually be considered legitimately funny are A) by behaving like total airheads, B) being menopausal and C) being catty to one another. Now, we have "Bride Wars", basically about a couple of female friends who actually sabotage each other just to have the wedding of their dreams. Okay, why is it that male-oriented comedies don't rely on these offensive and sexist gimmicks in order to rake in the big bucks. Not to mention that with all the self-esteem issues women and girls are dealing with more than ever nowadays as well as all the cattiness amongst female celebrities as it is, putting out a movie like this is really a bad move. I'm surprised Gloria Steinam hasn't tried to put a stop to these offensive movies, or at least talk about how bad they are for modern day feminism.
MonarC 01-09-2009, 06:27 PM In "Legally Blonde" she is actually a smart cookie and I love her dog "Bruiser". All those others are not worth watching.
Dr. Thong 01-09-2009, 06:42 PM There are plenty of comedies where the men are portrayed as idiotic slobs. That stereotype is just as prevalent.
Both types of movies apparently sell tickets and make money, so Hollywood continues to make them.
A large enough section of the moviegoing audience must like these movies, which is why they'll keep being made. That's not a defense of stereotyping men or women, just saying that as long as these stereotypes make money and draw audiences, they'll continue to be made.
MonarC 01-09-2009, 06:46 PM ^ Sad but true.

Yeah, but there's a huge difference. Men are actually idiots, but women aren't. We've fought long and hard to gain respect and equality. So, it is far more insulting to depict women in such a disrespectful manner.

I don't know if you're being tongue in cheek with your first comment, but I stand by what I said.
If you're serious with that first comment, well, there's a reason why some men don't respect women. Arrogance isn't a desirable quality whether you're male or female.
sunshinefizzy 01-09-2009, 11:05 PM The only thing sad about this movie is the movie all together. C'mon Kate, c'mon Anne, I know you both can do better!!!

Anne Hathaway was interviewed by our local news (Cleveland) and they showed clips. It does look like a stupid flick. I agree with Chelsea - these two actresses can do a lot better than this. ohno:

Now that's just mean. You've said that on other boards, too. There are great guys in SO and out. I just feel sorry for you that you feel that way. ohno:
ekkostar 01-10-2009, 01:04 AM It just looks like another boring chick movie to me.

I think the first movie I saw Kate Hudson in was Almost Famous, which I really liked. I remember thinking, "Wow - she's actually talented" and looking forward to her future works.
But she has fallen into a rut of making one stupid formulaic romantic comedy after another. I think she has the potential to stretch her acting chops, but instead is settling for a big paycheck and not pushing herself. Pity.:(

Anne Hathaway's star is on the rise; she's probably going to get an Oscar nod for Rachel Getting Married, so she should choose her non dramatic roles more carefully from now on.
Kate Hudson? She either needs to try harder or fire the people who help her choose scripts.
She's made more bombs than an Al Qaeda.
;)

 I was just about to say that.... Elle Woods was actually smart..... :).... I loved how she told that cashier off that was trying to rip her off buy putting the more expensive price on the 'cheaper" dress, because she thought Elle was a 'dumb" blonde..... And Elle did it in a soft, nice way.... She said, "I saw you switch the tags," very quietly.....:) She could have easily nmade a scene for all the customers to hear.......:)
Maddison 01-10-2009, 12:48 PM But there is no reason to make the female lead characters in these comedies so airheaded and naieve one minute then catty to one another the next. And what really makes me tick is how often times these characters are fighting over men. Sorry, but women deserve far more respect than that. We are smart, intelligent, strong, brilliant, observant...what are men? Sex-obsessed wastes of sperm and eggs.
JamesG 01-10-2009, 02:36 PM Okay, why is it that male-oriented comedies don't rely on these offensive and sexist gimmicks in order to rake in the big bucks.
Well to argue that, some of the recent male-oriented comedies don't play males in a positive light.
We had The Pineapple Express, College, Knocked Up, Zac and Miri Make A Porno, Harold And Kumar.
Males are portrayed as doing anything for sex, always high and into drugs and cheating, and violent.

Your disgusting remarks and attitude are not welcome at this site. If you continue with this attitude, appropriate measures will be taken. Consider yourself warned.

Im sure you have a reason why you are so angry at 'men' but just try to realize that not all men are bad. Don't let a few bad apples ruit it for ya.

So how do you account for movies like "There's Something About Mary" where the males are made to look like airheads chasing and fighting over women? There are plenty of movies where both young men and women are made to look stupid. You don't like 'em - nobody's forcing you to watch them or even pay attention to the trailers or ads for them.
Somehow I get the feeling that you've been scorned pretty badly by a guy or guys and are just in the mood to trash them all. Take it from someone who does have a right to speak about men from that side, I still don't generalize them all into the bad category. Sounds to me like someone could use a good lay!

Boy you can say that again!
Course, if you go out and start saying they're all a waste of sperm and eggs, I don't think that's going to get you very far chatting up prospective interests! No wonder she sounds frustrated. hehe

Maddison you make good points but you disqualify yourself some when you say things like all men are idiots and wastes of sperm and egg. Being a feminist is about being pro-women, not anti-men. I agree that women should be shown in more ways than just airheads and catty or fighting over men, but I also LOVE the movie Clueless and I enjoyed Legally Blonde also. I just think that women come in all varieties and that Hollywood should show the variety that we come in. Not all smart, bookworm women neglect their looks, not all blondes who love to go shopping and are into makeup and fashion are airheads, etc. Women come in a broad variety. I love going to parties and having a good time, going shopping, meeting new people, talking about fashion, etc, but I also love sitting down and talking about politics, looking at the news, reading, etc. I hate when people stereotype what I'm like before even knowing me.
platinumblondelife 01-10-2009, 09:27 PM While her "waste of sperm and eggs" comment was out of line, I find it interesting that the way some people choose to respond to her is to question her sex life and make comments about it.
Brad Russ 01-11-2009, 12:44 PM Wow, this thread sure went in a different direction than I thought it would. I'm not even going to touch the man hating stuff. I've tried hard in my life to be a good man, and feel no need to defend myself.
As far as the movies like the ones mentioned in this thread go, all I can say about them is that that's probably why I mostly just stick to Indy films, dramas, and documentaries these days. Don't have much use for what big Hollywood is putting out as comedy these days.

As I'm sure some are finding it interesting that you're chiding us, yet you take shots at Ann Coulter's sexuality and looks at the very same time.
Double Standards...yaes????

And you DON'T have to defend yourself Brad. Luckily these man-haters are in the minority. Just stay away from "Mark's Work Warehouse" where I hear they shop for their clothes. ;)
I agree, most of the comedies these days just suck. Doesn't matter whether it's a male or female lead/cast, etc..
And I LOVE your av!

You ARE a fine man, Brad, and you DON'T have to prove it. It comes across every time you post!! :D If all men were like you, the world would be a much better place.
As far as the movies go - that's why I stick with the older films. They were much better written!!

Damn, you guys are freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Cathie and Monika. Shoot, pretty soon I'm gonna have to have my smile surgically removed!! :D ;)
In regards to what Platinum Blonde mentioned in this thread, I've found that usually hat kind of hateful speech comes from somewhere. A person doesn't typically wake up one morning and just decide that all men are a "waste of sperm", or that all blacks or whites are bad, or whatever the case may be. I believe that's the point Cathie was trying to make in her post. Usually I've found that the person who makes those kinds of comments have experienced something in life which gives them such extremist views. Not saying that's always the case as some people just hate for no reason, but typically it comes from some kind of negative life experience.
Brad Russ 01-12-2009, 05:27 AM And I LOVE your av!
Thanks!! :) You were actually the inspiration for it, as I picked it shortly after an email I got from you a couple weeks ago. I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about. That av describes both of us I think, and it certainly describes you!!!

Yeah, who knows what has gone on in her life. I think it's good you understand that she probably hasn't felt that men are wastes of sperm and egg all of her life and that obviously comes from somewhere. I agree that we need more men like you.
