View Full Version : Why All The Hatred?
ekkostar 12-28-2008, 12:10 AM Can someone explain to me why this show is hated as much as it is? The only explanation I can come up with is that all the people that hate the show are die hard Cybill fans that know about her rocky professional relationship with Chuck Lorre. I seem to recall Dharma and Greg getting the same amount of hate over 10 years ago.
Chocolate Moose 12-28-2008, 12:34 AM What? This is a very well loved show ! Who would hate it ?
Because it's unfunny, cliche, predictable and Charlie Sheen is satan.
Chocolate Moose 12-28-2008, 10:12 AM naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
ekkostar 12-28-2008, 03:02 PM I also notice that the majority of the people that hate 21/2 Men are rabidly into flimsily written shaky cam comedies that rely on random humor (Boston Failure, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office), which are, in essence, the new age cult Seinfelds. I never liked Seinfeld either.
I like Chuck Lorre and it seems like he's never recieved the respect he deserves because he produces "laugh track comedies".
I'll take a shaky camera "random" as you say humor show over Dharma and Greg and Two And A Half Men any day.
The only reason I can think of people hating Dharma and Greg is well, because it's Dharma And Greg.
;)

I've never seen the show but Bob Dylan appeared in an episode once.
Dylan's cool.
And I like Arrested Development.
East Coast 04-03-2009, 09:49 PM The show is hated? Nooooo! Everyone I know loves this show...it's great.

I loved Dharma & Greg. It was one of my favorite shows.
Adamantium 04-04-2009, 07:48 AM I don't like it because in the nine episodes I've watched, I laughed only once. I HATE the show because it's the number one comedy series and it's going to have at least nine seasons total.
So for me, I hate it because it's so popular and I don't find it funny at all. But everyone I know loves the show, so I'm always having to defend myself for not liking it. And for the record, I don't like "Cybill" either. I do, however, like Chuck Lorre's other sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."
As for sitcoms I like: NewsRadio, Wings, Taxi, Ellen, The Odd Couple, The Honeymooners, That '70s Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, I Love Lucy, The Abbott and Costello Show, Happy Days, Boy Meets World, My Name Is Earl, 'Til Death, 8 Simple Rules, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Cheers, F Troop, The Munsters, Charles in Charge, The Monkees, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Family Guy, Futurama, Scrubs, My Three Sons, The Donna Reed Show, Make Room for Daddy, Night Court, Three's Company, Hearts Afire, The King of Queens, The Joey Bishop Show...
So there's a wide variety of sitcoms I like, even though I hate "Two and a Half Men."
RapunzeL 04-04-2009, 10:02 AM The reason I dislike "Two and a Half Men," is because I can't stand Charlie Sheen as an actor. He can't do a scene without having a beer bottle or some other beverage in his hand to swig after his "witty" comeback line. The only time he doesn't have a beverage in his hand, is when he's ushering his latest bimbo up the stairs to bed. He needs a prop to do every scene.

Then why the hell do you watch it then? Unless you're telling me you got all that insight from one episode, then why watch it?
There are a lot of shows I don't like, such as these so-called "reality" shows that are sucking the life out of TV. I don't watch them...I don't talk about them on forums...I just don't waste a second of my life with them.

I've watched maybe two episodes from beginning to end. The other times I've caught a scene or two, while channel surfing during commercials. So I am not a regular viewer. And the reason I'm not a regular viewer, is because I'm not a fan of Charlie Sheen, who dominates most of the show. I'm not strapped into a chair forcing myself to watch it, just so I can complain about it. I'm just stating my opinion, which is what discussion forums are all about.
East Coast 04-05-2009, 08:33 PM The use of props offends you? How about physical comedy like the kind John Ritter used to do on Three's Company? I dunno, to each his own I guess, but the hatred of props is funny in itself. Heh,heh. I like Big Bang Theory too by the way.
I think that Two and A Half Men could easily run for another 9 seasons if they wanted to. The possible topics and story lines could go on forever.

Spare me that tired cliche. Besides the obviousness of such a statement, you need to realize when you post your opinion...guess what? People are going to comment right back. After all, that's what discussion forums are all about.
yankeesrj12 04-14-2009, 10:28 PM I like Chuck Lorre and it seems like he's never recieved the respect he deserves because he produces "laugh track comedies".
I'm pretty sure The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men are shot in front of a live studio audience. Not that it matters, because those two are my favorite comedies. All of NBC's single camera comedies are absolute torture.
rusyd 04-19-2009, 03:38 PM I love 2 and 1/2 men! I think it is a very funny show, to each their own I guess
FanofRetroTV 04-21-2009, 03:42 PM Because ... Charlie Sheen is satan.
That is why I like this show, he's funny because he's evil
Furienna 05-04-2009, 04:15 AM For some reason, my mother and my sister like this show, so there are times, when I end up watching an episode with them. And yes, this show can be funny. But most episodes just make me angry, since poor Alan always has such unbelievably rotten luck.
East Coast 05-07-2009, 12:51 PM The "injustice" is one of the things that we're supposed to laugh at. Alan does bring on some of his own grief too. HaHaaa! Remember when he subjected himself as a tester for meds? The poor fella had every possible side effect. Heh,heh.
Furienna 05-07-2009, 01:09 PM I actually see no humor at all in Alan's bad luck. Like that incident, that you brought up, about the meds. It was just terrible. Are we really supposed to laugh at that?
phoebe7165 05-08-2009, 02:38 PM I actually see no humor at all in Alan's bad luck.
I agree, I don't, either.
In an answer to the thread, though, somebody must like this show since it's consistently in the top 20. Not many comedies these days can say that.
Although I can't believe that Charlie gets so many women. I mean, he's not that good-looking, IMHO!!:p
Furienna 05-08-2009, 03:45 PM I think Charlie is good-looking. Plus he sure has his way with the ladies. Not with keeping them, maybe, but surely with getting one-night-stands. Alan is more my type though.
East Coast 05-09-2009, 01:57 PM You're both taking it too seriously. It's not real. Of course we all feel some pity for Alan but if all of a sudden his luck changed there would be no show. Some of can also look at Alan and Charlie's personality "defects" and try to avoid them. Somewhere between the two characters is a personality that's actually functional.
Not to worry folks, in their real lives I'd say that John Cryer (Alan) is happier.
TripperFan 05-09-2009, 02:30 PM I thought the eps when Jon Cryer's testing medications and has all those reactions was an absolute RIOT!!! Afterall, it is just a t.v. show so you know he's not really suffering - but he plays it so well!. I also think they do a great job on the makeup when they do stuff like that. Like the ep when he got his ear pierced and it swelled up with infection. That's funny physical comedy to me.
I'm like everyone else - not huge on Charlie Sheen. Don't think a regular guy who looked like him would get the women he does on the show, but it plays well agains the "opposite" brother.
To me, it's Jon Cryer and the kid who make this show. Oh - and 'Berta too. I've always loved her as an actress and some of the lines she spouts makes me do spittakes with my tea!
But to each his own - I've tried getting my brother to watch and like it and he just can't get into it.
Furienna 05-09-2009, 03:17 PM Of course, I know it's not real, that it's just a TV show. But I still find some of the "physical comedy" too much to swollow.
Miss Lisa 06-09-2009, 03:36 PM Personally I love the show. I know a few people who don't like it, but it's just like every other show out there. Some people like it and some people don't, and it's just that simple.
East Coast 07-11-2009, 08:32 AM I don't know anybody who doesn't like the show. It's kinda like Seinfeld where all of the characters and their chemistry with each other works like magic. In my opinion there's no one character that's carrying the program. It takes all of them to make it work.
Why all of the negativity toward Charlie Sheen? Is it his Charlie Harper character or the actual person Charlie Sheen or both?
Furienna 07-11-2009, 04:37 PM I agree. There's a great chemistry between the cast members.

I'm not sure what the problem is w either Charlie, real or acted. I don't always agree w Charlie Sheen's views but I think he is a good actor and yea, he is a pig on the show, but that is the character he is playing and he plays it very well.
stevea 09-28-2009, 02:28 PM Hate? I think this is one of the funniest sitcoms I've ever seen! But now let me bring in a little criticism: Do we really need a 14 or 15 year old kid to say "Oh I thought you were talking about oral sex."? Yes, TV14 is fair warning on this kind of stuff, but I think they push things a little too far sometimes. And if you've never read Chuck Lorre's cards at the end, copy the show sometime (for personal use, of course!), and freeze it...usually interesting reading into his insights. On last week's show he whined about the CBS censors! Good grief! If they let this stuff through, what in heavens name are they holding back?
And to the criticism of Sheen and holding a beer bottle: please, don't lose sight of the fact the these people are only doing what the writers write and the director directs.
Slayer 11-01-2009, 11:29 PM For whatever reason, people rag on the constant repetitiveness (i.e. Charlie and his women, Alan's nagging, Berta's at times silly one-liners, etc.) however every sitcom ever developed has at least some form of incessancy within character establishment, and if there wasn't that sort of repetitiveness built in, the show would be a microcosm as to why we wouldn't watch and enjoy certain characters for their traits.
Honestly I think the show is awesome, mainly for Jon Cryer's great portrayal of a jovial, needy and sometimes stubborn Alan Harper, but Charlie Sheen is also a glowing endorsement for his straight shooting personality. It's easily the best sitcom going right now and aside from a few childish comedic pushes, the angles are normally fresh and each character provides something worthwhile.
dakert 11-01-2009, 11:41 PM If this is the best sitcom right now I can see why people are clamoring for the 50s-70s sitcoms!!!!!
