Yes, but only for medical reasons, for all other purposes it should remain
illegal

for REAL medical reasons, yes. but there needs to be stricter guidelines set up for this. i know people who are a year younger than me and somehow they have medicinal marijuana, yet...nothing is wrong with them. making marijuana legal is something i am definitely against. but in the case of medical purposes, i'd be okay with it.

Without a doubt. It is here in Canada and is "fairly" regulated. Hasn't brought down our system to be nothing but a bunch of pot heads. It's already been proven less harmful than alcohol.

And yes folks, I HAVE been using it during my treatment if anyone is curious and I'm not ashamed of it in the least. Again, just thankful that it's available to those who do need it.

O.k. - Who pooped in the poll with the "other" bringing our unanimous yes vote's average down? ;)

Here's the story of a woman in Montana who had a severe chronic pain disease. Her body was allergic to all chemicals, and she couldn't take any drugs. Marijuana was the only thing that took her pain away. Despite being legalized for medical use in Montana, the ********s at the DEA stepped in and wouldn't allow her to use it. Her pain became so unbearable that she killed herself last year. Here's her story.

Wow, that is so awful. Since medical marijuana was one of the big issues here this past election, the local news interviewed people who were for and against it. This one ignorant girl said, "It definitely should not be legalized because then everyone would be high all the time." Well, alcohol is legal, and "everyone" isn't drunk all the time. If someone is truly against it, they should at least have a good reason to back that up, and not some lame cop out because they can't think of anything else.

Exactly. And news for that ignorant girl. If you're in pain or nauseated so much that gravol and the traditional drugs don't help. but grass does, you don't get "high" off of it because it's going to the pain centres of the brain. If you get a high feeling off of any painkiller or drug, then it means you're taking too much.

It just kills me that there's still this stigma attached to marjiuana, especially for people who could really use it to make their quality of life better, yet I just read yesterday that in Toronto they're now proposing that alcohol be allowed in movie theatres because attendance is down. So they stopped letting you smoke (pretty obvious why) but now drunks can show up at your local movie theatre. That really makes a lot of sense.

Of course I am all in favor of medical marijuana! It helped my brother-in-law and my mother-in-law deal with painful cancers they had before they passed away. Quite frankly, for recreational purposes, I see nothing wrong with that either considering that we live in a very high-accountability high-stress world today.

Somebody better wake up and tell our legislators that this isn't 1960 anymore!

I would never use it. Never have, never will. I can respect though that it would work for some people who suffer from medical conditions. Even if I were given the option because of my Glaucoma I would refuse for personal reasons. Perhaps some here might think less of me, but it's my choice.
I agree.
For Glaucoma, there are many herbs which can be used to treat it:

- Billbery contains flavonoids and nutrients needed to protect the eye from further damage.
- Chickweed and eyeweed are good for all eye disorders.
- A combination of ginkgo biloba extract and zinc sulfate may slow progressive vision loss.
- Jaborandi is a rainforest herb that contains pilocarpine, used for over 120 years to relieve intraocular pressure in Glaucoma.
- Rose hips supply valuable flavonoids and vitamin C.

And the herb ginger is an excellent remedy for nausea and there are no side effects like mind-altering and it's not carcinogenic like marijuana is.

although i'm not very educated on this subject, i don't see any reason to ban it. it isn't like abortion where someone else gets hurt/dies in the process. it may be best if the amounts taken are regulated, but ultimately it should be the patient's choice.

I ABSOLUTELY see nothing wrong with using marijuana for MEDICAL reasons like pain reduction (esp. from cancer), nausea reduction (many drugs and chemo used to treat cancer cause nausea), glaucoma and appetite stimulation in patients dealing with a chronic disease where severe loss of appetite is one of the side effects or symptoms. It unequivocably should be legalized for SUCH reasons. If someone suffering from one of the above conditions doesn't want to opt for marijuana of course that's totally understandable; I'd be leary of using pot myself - for anything - but if faced with glaucoma or cancer - if nothing else worked - if push came to shove - I'd reluctantly use it - but only as an absolute last resort

As for using pot for recreational use. Well, I think it should be decriminalized but s/b illegal to some degree with of course the biggest penalties for illegal dealers. And I have to respectfully disagree that pot is less dangerous than alcohol. I think IT'S JUST as dangerous when used solely for getting high. It totally throws off your auditory and spacial perception (VERY DANGEROUS for anyone getting behind a wheel), can make you paranoid, can cause you to vastly overeat etc.

It might help some people but does nothing for me - if anything, the smell alone of it makes me even more nauseated. I think you're talking about "regular" nausea - trust me, the nausea from chemo and radiation therapy are not the same. Also, ginger root does nothing for the appetite. The medical community prefers marijuana for this use as at the same time of calming nausea, it also helps increase the appetite. It helps reduce the weightloss associated with the treatments for cancer and such. Actually, its the only thing that's given me an appetite over the past year - it's what's helped me fight my anorexia during this time also.

And medical marijuana is offered in both the herb form (if you do want to smoke it in it's purest form which is more potent) or you can take it orally as they make it into a pill form for those who don't wish to smoke it.

Again, everyone has the right to choose, but if you're taking it properly for a medical condition there's no mind altering effect at all.

Still, isn't quite the same as alcohol. I've never seen anyone get aggressive or want to get into a fight or murder someone like you see with booze. Yes, while smoked it might be bad for the lungs, but alcohol kills a lot faster (attacks and destroys the liver). Alcohol also increases your chances of cancer or heart disease just as much as smoking does.

I've also never heard of anyone dying from marijuana posioning. You can quite easily from drinking too much.

Hi Chris!

Yeah, unfortunately I did and had a bad reaction to it. I know it does help some people though.

That's the thing with any drug - they all affect people differently. I know some people that you'd never know were "high" off grass, and others who get quite paranoid and even physically sick off of it. That's why I'm glad we do have it available up here for medical treatment - as it's another choice for people. Sometimes you even need a combination of two or more drugs in order for them to work.

What's been really weird for me is that the radiation affected my sense of smell. I swear I've got the nose of a beagle now and can smell things 2 miles away! I think that's also had a lot to do with the nausea I've been getting.

In general, I am against "medical marijuana" for two reasons.
- Many of the "patients" who use it for "medical" use are bogus. I've heard of prescriptions written for it for silly reasons, like a cut finger.
- Many pro-marijuana people see it as a way to slowly make it legal for everyone. And that sets a bad example for children.

I think with stricter oversight and regulation, that it should be made available to those who really need it. There are bad apples everywhere. Bad cops, bad priests, bad doctors and bad patients. Still, those who truly benefit from medical marijuana, should be able to use it. I know of many chronic pain patients whose pain would be significantly reduced by using it. Those in pain who would use it responsibly shouldn't have to suffer more because some abuse the system.

Massachusetts just legalized marijuana. The law still has a few steps to go before it's official. If it is legalized, it will be regulated the same as alcohol, with age restrictions, no driving, etc., as it is a drug. A natural drug of sorts, but it does impair reaction time and judgement. You're right though, it's a hell of a lot safer than booze any day of the week.

I think it varies by person but honestly, at the end of day, at least to me, both pot and booze are equally destructive when used addictively. The idea of a very stoned person getting behind the wheel of a car (or cooking) is just as scary to me as someone very drunk.

However, when marijuana is used for medical reasons, under the supervision of a doctor, my understanding is it address the medical issue at hand without the patient feeling high, or at most with a mild high - a totally different sensation than what an abuser of the substance experiences.

As I said - medical marijuana is available in capsule form - NO carcinogenic properties in it whatsoever - no different than your ginger, however, it's more potent and helps for extreme nausea due to illness (pregnancy and seasickness is NOT the same and there are plenty of cures available for those).

No different from anything else doctor's prescribe for things. I've seen percacet prescribed for a cut finger. That's the doctors fault and he should be investigated as was Elvis' doctor. You can't blame the drug for bad doctors and how they dispense it. Here it's regulated very tightly. Anyone who is on it for medical purposes is kept in a central database and the quantity and strength of what they're getting is constantly monitored.

So your theory is that because it can be abused, then it shouldn't be used. Can you imagine what this world would be like if they had that attitude towards any painkilling or nausea relief drug?

Not a good argument. You're still thinking of the stigma it's been given over the years from movies like "Reefer Madness" (ROFL) or Cheech and Chong.

Any drug - including antihistamines can be abused. I just saw a lot more trouble with alcohol than with grass first hand. My father was an alcoholic who got abusive with my mother and myself. That sort of thing doesn't happen on pot - they usually just veg out and get lazy instead. We would have traded that in an instant with my father. btw, even though he had a heart attack, they said it was really the alcohol that killed him. He also went into an alcoholic coma for 3 days once. That doesn't happen on pot.

LOL - I've burned myself more "straight" when cooking than I have while under the influence! Usually because my hands, wrists and arms are in so much pain, I drop a pan or something.

Again, don't know about the States, but if they legalize it, it will probably be the same. They now have breathalizers that can detect the use of marijuana and have been using them at R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) stops along with the one for booze. If you drive "high" they can charge you with impaired driving as much as they can with alcohol.

You do realize, as I already mentioned, that many for "medical marijuana" supporters, it is a sneaky way of eventually legalizing marijuana.
I will say this: If I had a child whom I found out was using marijuana, my feeling would be that I failed as a parent. Just as if my parents found me using marijuana (which never happened and never will).

It's working fine here. Maybe it's a problem in the States and they haven't worked out the bugs. It's fully regulated and watched here as I previously mentioned.

And even for countries who don't have it legalized for medical use, it hasn't collasped those countries either (Holland for one).

It's your personal choice not to use, and that's fine, but again, it's like the gay marriage thing - don't push your beliefs on others if it doesn't affect you. There's people out there who are desperate for alternative "medicines".
And btw, marijuana is also considered an herb - just has different qualities than ginger. There is absolutely nothing synthetic about it like there is with medicines - many of which have many more side effects and long term health effects than marijuana. Prednisone and steriods destroy the liver very easily - even Tylenol can when used improperly or too much.

For fairly mild nausea, you don't even need the cola syrup - you can put a can of Coke out and let it go flat and it has the same effect. I use this when I can, however, it hasn't worked well for me this past year because of my specific illness.

Actually, I didn't know you could get it at the drugstore. I'll have to check. I thought you had to use the stuff they deliver to restaurants that mixes with the soda water. I haven't had access to that for about 27 years now when I used to waitress. ; )

I'll check that out. Even with Gravol, it's the one otc drug that makes me sleepy as can be - worse than anything else I've had. Actually, I use Gravol as a sleep aid because it works so well and wears off in 4 hours while you're sleeping with no after affects.

And yah, I agree all this has been discussed and we know where we all stand on the issues. Guess this is more for new people here. I just want people to know that even though some of us may use marijuana, we're not all useless drug addicts with it. I can hold down a career (when the economy's good), a household, have a social life, etc.. Again, right now in my case we're talking a different story as I've been sick. :)

This thread has gone on for awhile but I just wanted to say I had a good friend I lived with who had breast cancer and I would get her pot from my ex bc it made her chemo treatments bearable. I didn't care the cost or that it was illegall I knew my friend felt better afterwards.
I have not done illegall drugs for around 15-20 years. Pot is soooo harmless in my opinion. Ecspecially when it comes to alcholol. I never met anyone so high that they robbed a store or killed someone or got into a fight bc they were stoned and needed/wanted more pot. But to each there own and however people feel about it I can't and don't want to change their minds.

I think if people find themselves in a situation where medical marijuana would help them, they might feel different. There's a stigma with narcotics as well, even severe government intervention aka DEA. Meanwhile, millions of chronic pain patients are killing themselves because they can't take the pain. Doctors are afraid to prescribe, so they under-prescribe, leaving people under-medicated, or worse, not medicated at all. It's the addicts that ruin it for the people who really need the pain medication. I've been researching and studying this pain crisis for over a year now, and it's really and frightening.

I say yes, since it has been proven to have medicinal use that helps people, it should be legal for medical reasons.

Exactly - perfectly stated.

It's like they say a glass of red wine a day is actually good for you. It's when stuff is abused - ANY kind of medicine that it makes headlines.

For those of us who've tried everything else, it's a Godsend.

I think it should be legal, but I have a question, what form is medical Marijuana in, is it a capsule? I'm just wondering if you would get the same effect from smoking some. Did any of that make sense?

As far as I know, it comes in two forms - the original "weed" form so it can be smoked or even baked into things (you've heard of "hash brownies"), however it loses it's potency a bit if it's baked into something.

It also comes in a pill form for people who don't want to smoke it. I think the original form is what's preferred because the effects are immediate - not like a pill where you have to wait.

For all I know, they may have it in liquid form now too.

It's actually useful for a lot of things - hemp is now being made into textiles and everything else and is considered environmentally friendly because it's more tolerant to disease than cotton is. And can be grown just about anywhere in the world.

So, smoking weed might help my Fibro pain?

That is a possibility. If you've tried ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING (painkillers) that is available to you and have issues with all of them, I don't see why not.

I don't either. I've also read that medicinal marijuana makes narcotics work more effectively.

Actually it's highly effective for fibro and RA.

I have pretty painful joint issues. I don't have it 24/7, but there are certain times of the year, such as right now where they are the worst. I have had knee issues for almost 2 years now and just recently developed neck issues. ALSO I have a bad wrist from having injured it really badly twice. I've taken extra-strength hydrocodone (10/650 dosage; blue pills) for the pain and that didn't do much for it. I've tried all OTC painkillers with little success. If I could somehow get a little bit of medical marijuana for all these when I have my horrible flareups, that would be GREAT. Oh, and I just remembered I have really weird and extremely painful issues with my right arm, where it meets my shoulder. Something like I tore a muscle in it and it never really healed correctly. IT HURTS! Again, no dice on OTC/prescription painkillers. Meanwhile, when I have flareups of any part of my body, I'm SOL for pain relief.

I mean, COME ON. I'm ****ing 23 years old with chronic PAIN that I've been dealing with for YEARS. I'm the youngest in my family with so many issues, and I've done all that I can for my pain. Suckage.

If it's for medical purposes I think it'd be helpful also if people in these cases (who are normally against marijuana use) wouldn't view it so much as a drug or it's use as 'doing drugs'.

I've actually referred to marijuana as "herbal healing" by some people, I guess there is some truth to that?

Have you tried anti-inflamatory drugs for those issues at all? I was on 750mg of naproxen for a good number of years. It's variation of ibuprofen (which upset my stomach something awful). Then I find out after taking it for 13 years that naproxen (aka naprosin) can have adverse side effects too.

Sometimes a combination - the anti-inflamatories to get the swelling and inflamation down, but painkillers if it becomes acute (which joint pain and fibro often does unfortunately).

Yeah, tried both OTC and prescription naproxen. It kills the pain for only a little bit (an hour max), then it comes right back. OTC naproxen does jack ****, I know this much. Prescription naproxen didn't do very much for any of my pains. :(

I have to admit, when I STOPPED taking it is when I went into a bit of a remission with my RA believe it or not. It might have just be coincidence, but it sure was weird. I haven't gone back on it since. I do find extra strength Motrin (well, the generic version) does help keep flare ups down. I take a maintenance dose of one or two a day (400 mg each).
