View Full Version : I decided to be an agnostic.
MrCleveland 11-30-2008, 04:25 PM I had a crappy weekend.
I see everyone in my family with someone on Thursday, I hear that my mom got into a car accident on Friday (She's fine, but the car isn't), I spent my weekend at my grandma and I didn't even finish with the Christmas Tree for her, and now I'm unsure if I want to drive anymore.
I might as well suffer with the hell I made and turn away from God. I'm also thinking of seeing a Fortune-Teller sometime this month and ask why are these things happening?
MickeyMac 11-30-2008, 04:38 PM I'm sorry all of this happend to you and hope things get better. About your religious choice, you have every right to worship or not worship however you see fit.
Hollow 11-30-2008, 04:51 PM god has made it clear over and over again that he doesn't want me to be part of his crappy smelly religion. **** him, he's a *****! :talk: :happyface
PunkyP0WER 11-30-2008, 05:07 PM i think people think God is supposed to be a genie who grants wishes. God doesn't promise that life is going to be all sunshine and cupcakes! He does offer though His strength and unwavering love to comfort you through the hard times but you have to have the faith to recognize it and embrace it.
Theda Bara 11-30-2008, 06:06 PM God made some days good and some days bad. The bad days are actually a blessing, because it makes us wiser and stronger..

gidgetgrape 11-30-2008, 06:18 PM Everyone has crappy weekends. I think you should concentrate on what you have. Vehicles can be fixed or replaced. You'll only have one mother. Corny, but true - You have to be the change in the world you want to see.
TripperFan 11-30-2008, 06:21 PM I'd still trade you in a second. Not to make your troubles small, but I wish mine were as easy to fix. :(
And p.s. - don't waste your money on a "fortune-teller". ;)
MonarC 11-30-2008, 06:53 PM Sorry to hear your having a bad weekend. You know that saying that goes "Everything happens for a reason."? Well I truly believe that. Out of the bad things that happened, look for something good. Like someone else said, at least your mom is still alive. Maybe you should be thinking god for that one instead of turning your back on him. But again like someone said, that is your choice and you have every right to make it.
I find it disturbing how some people turn their backs on god and curse him because they feel he isn't doing enought for them. Then when there is a major crisis how many of them are on their knees begging for god to help?
MrCleveland 11-30-2008, 09:22 PM I just watched "Bruce Almighty" and I feel a little bit better with my faith.
Maybe I should see that film every time I get discouraged with God.
ABlairican Pie 11-30-2008, 11:29 PM god has made it clear over and over again that he doesn't want me to be part of his crappy smelly religion. **** him, he's a *****! :talk: :happyface
How is it that God made a "religion", and did so just so he can torment us for his own twisted amusement?
God doesn't MAKE religion, people do.
Janice 12-01-2008, 12:29 AM I've actually been having issues with my faith wavering lately too. Brian's been helping me, but it's hard. I need to believe because I MUST see my parents and sisters again, and death can't make it final for me and my husband. It's just getting more difficult to believe that God is loving or if he even exists. My husband threw in the towel a couple of years ago. It's a terrible feeling, to feel your faith slipping away.
ABlairican Pie 12-01-2008, 01:15 AM I understand completely about problems with faith. Sometimes, especially in these past few years since my mother passed away, I admit that I've felt angry at God--" I KNOW, Lord, that people have to die, death happens to all of us, but WHY my mother??" I got so upset a few years ago that I just let out and let God have it. I cursed a blue streak at Him like a sailor on Tourette's about my mother dying, etc. (also a big part of the reason was that I had missed the bus and had to wait), and I never did that before. Then after I had regained my composure, I said, "I hope you understand, God.
I don't really mean it" (though I did at the time).
Sometimes, I have had major disappointments with Christians. On the third anniversary of my mother's death last year, I received an e-mail from one Christian lecturing me about something I did, and I did not want to receive such a message on a very unpleasant day to have to remember. This person's message was terse, unsympathetic, unfeeling, too "business-like" and soulless. Not harsh, but clinical and too "parental". That soured me a great deal on wanting to be identified as a Christian. I tried to respond, and explain and apologize for the situation that he was going on about, but I don't think he got the message. So I'm not very happy with this person, especially when I was hurt on such a black day to remember.
I've also been frustrated with God recently at thinking about the death of Anne Pressly, the newscaster who was beaten to death during a robbery just right after she saw the movie in which she starred, the "W." film, in a brief part. Why does a beautiful, giving, loving person, so young and so much to offer, have to die?? Where is God's sense of justice? Is he so cruel to allow this, or powerless to stop it?? After all I've thought about, feeling like I had some of the answers, I can't explain this. I imagine that maybe my definition of God needs expanding. But still..... Though I'm glad her killer has been caught (hopefully), and that there is some closure and justice for her family, it still makes me wonder. Who among us is safe if God doesn't protect the
truly innocent??
LuLu Rogers 12-01-2008, 01:36 AM I think everyone questions their faith at some point, I know I have many times. I have to say that I know God exists because there are situations I've been in where I should've been dead or seriously hurt, but I made it through without a scratch, God is the only explanation for that. I have been angry with God before, but turning your back on Him or cursing Him just isn't the answer.
Marvo301 12-01-2008, 02:10 AM James 1:2-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
When we face hard times and difficult circumstances they aren't meant to turn us away from God they're meant to test our faith in order to make it stronger. It's like coal. Coal needs to go through extreme heat and pressure in order to turn into a diamond. So when difficult things are happening in your life just remember that means God is at work in you turning you into his precious jewel.:)

well said. i was an atheist for a really long time before i converted and I couldn't understand why there was so much pain and sorrow in a world that God created. it took many realizations before i finally accepted, but i did question myself and my faith after that decision was made. we've all had crappy days, not to make your problems seem any less significant. there are days when i'm frustrated with God or i don't understand why i have to go through something. but even in the most difficult of times, God is always with you, whether or not you accept that. like others have said, its the trials and tribulations and how you act that make you who you are. God is not torturing you by putting you through these; He knows what you can handle. in the end though, it is your decision to believe or not.

That is a great example. :D
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-01-2008, 12:01 PM Well, first I want to say I'm sorry you're so stressed out that it's causing you to have major issues with your faith. :( Secondly, there's nothing wrong with being agnostic. I guess I consider myself to be that because I really don't have any set beliefs. I try to convince myself there's a God, but who really knows? Basically you have to do what's right for you to help you cope and deal with life. If you were a Christian before, don't let things get you down and destroy that. It's about what you feel is the right thing for you to believe in, not circumstances in life that may challenge it. Good luck with everything. :)
TripperFan 12-01-2008, 01:12 PM As you can see, I more or less gave up on the Big Guy idea years ago. Actually, my father was atheist and my agnostic. I've more or less been agnostic - I'm the type that needs to see proof. Unfortunatley, I've put my faith in things that have let me down everytime - parents, husbands, boyfriends, friends. The only thing that's never let me down were animals. It seems the "get it" more than humans ever will.
I think that's why now, I do consider myself spiritual - but not religious. When I "pray" its not to a God perse, I really don't know exactly "who" I'm praying to. Maybe I do it because it seems "the thing to do", or maybe it's out of a quiet desperation.
I just try to keep in mind my little motto, "That there's ALWAYS someone worse off than you - so never say 'Why Me?'"
I'll say that, when my tumour was discovered, I never once have said, Why Me. If anything, I was just grateful that it explained the horrible headaches, nausea and seizures. If anything, I'm grateful that I live in a day an age that they can discover these things and try to treat them. And oddly enough, in a way, grateful to my ex for driving me to the point that I was forceable taken to the hospital so that it could be discovered.
MonarC 12-01-2008, 01:27 PM I just try to keep in mind my little motto, "That there's ALWAYS someone worse off than you - so never say 'Why Me?'"
That is so true. Im so sorry for all the troubles that you have been through. :bighug:
That is also true about animals. They can be the most loyal and loving companions.
ekkostar 12-01-2008, 02:28 PM It's all mythology to me and I don't take every religion at face value. I'm the same with religion as I am with politics: independent. I don't belong to anyone and I don't pick sides.
MonarC 12-01-2008, 02:51 PM I am not apart of any 'organized religion' nor do I want to be, but I do follow the teachings of Jesus. Anytime I feel low or feel that I need to be uplifted I just read a few of his amazing speeches and I feel so much better.
sunshinefizzy 12-01-2008, 04:05 PM Just know that all this shall pass. Everything is going to be okay. If God put you to it, he'll help you through it.
Mikado 12-01-2008, 05:00 PM Welcome to the agnostics club MrC.....we don't pay dues , but, you can send me money if you really want to!

That's exactly how I am. I sort of pray at night but, I don't know to whom or what...certainly not the same God most Christians are praying to.
And I have to say how strong of a person you appear to me. You've faced so much but you don't let it get to you. That's really admirable. Just wanted to say that.

Aww - thank you - and thanks too MonarC.
Yeah, I can't say my "God" is a "Christian" God. I've had plenty of people try to help me with "their God". Sorry, I just cannot buy into the "him" testing our faith and all that. If that's the case, why is it some of the most unGodly people fly through life, while some of the sweetest people get thrown these "tests" non-stop in their lives? They don't need to be tested that hard or much! With each hurdle this year, I've tried to keep that in mind, but by mid-July I started to feel like Jesus on the Family Guy "Passion of the Christ" episode where they're whipping Jesus and he's saying, "Stop it - stop it"! ;)
You can say those other people will pay for it all in "hell" - good stuff - but why is my life here and now hell? Can't we just split the diff a bit here and lay off me for a couple of years?
I've just felt most of my life like God comes from within you. Your parents raise you with the basics, but society is reflected as you grow up and you know in your heart what's right and wrong. I think my warped sense of humour and outlook on life is what helps keep me going. And I insist on "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" to be played at my funeral - memorial - whatever it'll end up being. Pretty much sums it all up there. ;)
Brad Russ 12-01-2008, 07:26 PM I'm sorry you're having trouble in your life and in your Faith MrCleveland!! :( I too have lacked in Faith, and asked the questions why and how many times, and for me, the realization that God was real came a couple ways. The first was when I thought about the idea of Heaven. A perfect place, where everyone is happy, and nothing goes wrong. Maybe we're suppose to go through all this crap on Earth in order to fully enjoy the rewards of Heaven. It's Like Edith Bunker once said to Archie, "maybe the reason we see so much suffering in this world, is so's when we get to Heaven, we'll notice the improvement".
Another reason I've been able to push on with my Faith, is because of the many times God showed me he was real through Angel visitations, pulling me out of trouble I'd stupidly gotten myself into, never giving me more than I could handle, and through various other miracles I've witnessed, which I truly believe if anybody witnessed, they'd change in a split second!! Whenever I hear someone say "I need actual physical proof that God exists", it breaks my heart sooo deeply, because I have that proof, and I wish with all that's in me, that they did too. I pray that God lets them see that proof too one day!!
I would strongly recommend that you read the book of Paul MrCleveland. Paul was known in the Bible as God's most faithful sevant, and just read what God put Paul through and you will be amazed, and read why he did it. I strongly recommend the book of Paul to anyone who is struggling with the why me question, and maybe it'll make things just a little bit clearer. If God's willing to put his most Faithful servant through such heartache and suffering, maybe reading it will make it a bit more clear as to why we are put through such hard times.
I truly hope things get better for you in your life soon Mr. Cleveland!!! :)

My feelings exactly!! I've struggled with depression, anxiety and anorexia for a good part of my life, and I wouldn't have made it without God. I'm thinking about you and keeping you in my prayers!!! :bighug:
