View Full Version : i seriously hate my job. tell me if i am being ridiculous about it
so elektrikkxx 11-23-2008, 11:43 PM tell me if i'm being ridiculous or if i have a reason to be upset.
so in april i started working at a grocery store near my house. they had me bag groceries at first, and i asked to be a cashier and they told me they'd show me how to do it within the next month and they never did. however, they hired about 10 other people in between that time and now and all of them instantly were put behind the register, so of course i was thinking, why did they do that when i've been here longer? every month they'd tell me they'd do it next month, but that time took forever to come.
then, my manager started telling me he wanted me to cut my hair, and he'd constantly tell me that if i didn't cut at least an inch off my hair, he'd send me home the next time i came in and i wouldn't get to work. this bothered me, and i wanted to keep my job so i did as told.
so FINALLY after months of asking why they never put me as a cashier when people came into the store and went right to work as cashier, they had me practice how to do it with someone else's help. however, the second i made ONE mistake, the manager (the one who made me cut my hair a little bit) told me "if you're not going to do it right you need to go back to bagging groceries and pushing carts in from the parking lot". i made ONE MISTAKE. other people have made mistakes and it was never a big deal at all. i made a mistake because he made a rude comment to one of the other managers, he was like "WHY DID YOU PUT MICHAEL AS A CASHIER HE IS NOT CAPABLE" which of course made me nervous and inclined to mess up.
i feel like they treat me like i'm stupid and incapable when i work just as hard as everyone else, and have not done anything wrong since the time i've been there.
catlover79 11-23-2008, 11:45 PM I don't think you are being ridiculous. Maybe you should try filling out applications at other places in the meantime, and find a job that fits you better.
so elektrikkxx 11-23-2008, 11:49 PM i am considering it.
it just pisses me off that they taught everyone what to do except me, and they're surprised i don't know how. i even told them, i know nothing around here because YOU DIDN'T HELP ME WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE, YOU LEFT ME TO DO IT ALL ON MY OWN .
and they don't get it.
and if you want to know who they hired as cashiers after they hired me, it was a girl who made no eye contact and looked about 12 and was rude, a girl from venezuela who can't speak one word of english, and the manager's daughter.

Is the manager's daughter one that could screw up all day long and not get a word said to her or is your manager an equal opportunity criticizer?

he criticizes everyone but he is much nastier to me when i make a simple mistake.
Janice 11-23-2008, 11:56 PM Nepotism rears its ugly head. No, you're not being ridiculous at all. You were promised one thing, and given another. It feels almost like a setup, when you made one mistake, and they took you off the register. Everyone, and I mean everyone, makes mistakes. I agree with Monika, get out. It sounds to me as if you're a hard worker who just wants to be given a fair shot. You deserve that Michael. Work in a place where you'll be appreciated.
dawsongirl 11-23-2008, 11:59 PM Sounds like your manager just doesn't like you, probably because of your look.
What a ****tard.

thank you. it's not even that i want to be appreciated, but i want to be treated the same as everyone else. i don't want to be the last one that learns how to do something quite simple (as if they think i'm stupid) and if i make a mistake i want them to help me do better next time and not give up on me.
i'd switch jobs but if i leave this one, my next job would ask my current manager how i did at his store and they'd hear something bad most likely, and have a bad impression of me from the start.
i want to know what i could've possibly done to be singled out from the start. i've asked other managers and they tell me it's all in my head and that i'm too sensitive and take things personally.

i've cried more at my job than everywhere else this year combined. mostly because of him. he also conveniently forgot to give me any hours for next weekend, and if the other manager didn't notice i'd be out of the schedule rotation and possibly not included the next week either.

All the more reason to get out of there - ASAP!!
so elektrikkxx 11-24-2008, 12:05 AM he's leaving my store actually, but the next woman that is replacing him was there for a while working along side him and she's worse than him by far. so i am definitely considering leaving

I had a job like that...I ended up walking out because if I didn't, I would have done something drastic. You'll never change this worthless piece of crap, so just get out and save your sanity.

i left early one time because if i stayed around, i'd have gotten so upset i'd have either broken things in the store or hit my boss right in the face.
what happened at your job?
Hollow 11-24-2008, 12:13 AM you need to get out of there. that's not how a decent manager runs business. you don't deserve that treatment.

I agree. No one deserves to be treated that way. If you dread going to work, something is definitely wrong.

one time he told me i needed to cut my hair because it's an embarrassment to his "fine establishment". i think i said something like, "what makes a place a fine establishment is the quality of the staff, and those who run it."

work for me, is a constant insult to my intelligence. there's only one person there who actually listens to what i have to say. i'm trying to think of what i may have done to give the manager a bad impression of me, because i'm not one to play the victim role and blame other people but i really wonder what i could've done.

did your manager go over this stuff before he hired you? either way, it seems like a really crappy job. everyone makes mistakes, especially when you're just figuring out how to do something. learning stuff at work is even worse because there's so much pressure on you. your manager seems like an ass. you're definitely not over-reacting. fill out a bunch of applications to other places, so that you've got more than one option & get out, asap!

no, he didn't go over any of it. i showed up and they left me on my own for the most part to figure everything out. and i plan on looking for other jobs in the spring when more places open :)

Why wait for spring?? You'd think that with the holiday season approaching, more people would be hiring - especially in retail.

i wanted to get a job at the mall but it's not that close to where i live. my mom says she wants me to find somewhere close to here that i can work at. and that really limits my options.
i could always stay with the same company and switch to another store but that runs the risk of seeing some of my current co-workers again.
ekkostar 11-24-2008, 07:46 AM Some minimum wage bosses are just stupid and egotistical. I finally had to leave my job even though I enjoyed it and liked making the money just because of my boss. She was accusing me of all these things that I wasn't doing and she sounded very bizarre. She was telling me things like that I was trying to run her stupid husband over in the parking lot (WHAT?) and that I was treating the customers horribly.
Dr. John Becker 11-24-2008, 09:24 AM i'd switch jobs but if i leave this one, my next job would ask my current manager how i did at his store and they'd hear something bad most likely, and have a bad impression of me from the start.
i.
Depending on what state you live in, it may be illegal for the manager to say anything about you other then whether or not he'd rehire you.
Jude The Obscure 11-24-2008, 12:32 PM Michael--do yourself a favor.......GET OUT!!!!!!
My g/f is in this situation at Kmart where she has worked for over 20 years and the current management team is constantly harassing her--if they can get her to quit, they can hire a minimum wage unskilled worker and not pay her unemployment, etc. She is always crying to me, but her options are very limited. She doesn't have a vehicle and any other job would not start her off at the pay she is making now, which she needs to pay rent, buy food, etc. We live in different states so being here with me is not an option (for either of us.......I'm full time at a grocery store, but only make min. wage)
TripperFan 11-24-2008, 12:55 PM I totally agree with Janice. Looks like this manager just doesn't like guys with longer hair (meanwhile I do - I'm tired of this shaved look on young boys and men - enjoy your hair while you still have it)!!
I'm surprised he didn't use that as the excuse for not putting you on cash (oh the hair can fall in the groceries.....B.S.).
Doesn't sound like you're going to get very far with this goof - especially if daddy's daughter is there. Start putting applications in at other grocery stores. Now is the time of year they need people anyway for the holidays. You'll have a good chance.
To me, you should be working more at a clothes or accessories store anyway. ;)
sunshinefizzy 11-24-2008, 03:08 PM Sounds like a toxic working enviornment. I would leave, that d-bag isn't worth your tears.

That's how my last job was. I wanted to do prep, but all I did was wash dishes because they always had a temp dishwasher who doesn't know jack and boss me around.
I didn't want to quit, but one employee said I didn't know what I was doing even though I did the job for 21 months while he was only there for 21 hours!
I wish I could apologize to the kid, but looks like he'll never accept my apology.
Chocoholic 11-24-2008, 04:55 PM He does sound like an absolute jerk! That "cut your hair" comment was especially uncalled for. Your hairstyle has nothing to do with your job performance. If you work hard, show up on time, and are polite to customers, then that should be all that matters. I could care less how the cashier ringing my order looks as long as they're friendly and polite to me and understand English.
I'd find another job where you'll be respected, if I were you.
Myles 11-24-2008, 05:08 PM Yeah, is your manager bald or something? He has hair envy!
But seriously, he has no right to make comments on your appearance. I've seen your pictures. In no way does your hair style impair you from performing your job duties. This is merely his personal opinion and its crossing a boundary. From the way you describe it... he's being a jerk. Manager's daughter? Pffft! Figures.
You're really young so its natural for people to think you aren't capable of things. Its just a shame he doesn't even give you a chance as a cashier. Despite what he says, you know you are capable and can do it. Don't stop believing that. Just mute that lunatic's voice out, smile and everything will be butter.
Years ago, I worked as a grocery stocker and cashier. I know all about being treated like dirt for minimum wage. But really, don't let it get you so upset to the point where you feel so down about yourself. It's very admirable that you've stuck with it for a while and not quit. Something better will come your way, get searching!
so elektrikkxx 11-24-2008, 05:25 PM I'm going to give my job one more chance, I'm not one to give up in situations and I want to stick it out as long as I can, and hope it gets better. But my manager is on very thin ice with me.
Yooch 11-24-2008, 06:37 PM As a teacher, with many years of experience--I've seen many different hairstyles, clothing styles, you name it. Even if a student's style is way different than mine--and believe me there have been some! The purple mohawks, the 'goth' clothes, piercings, torn jeans etc., I've always treated everyone the same, and your manager should treat you with fairness. As long as you do your job, he should not bother you. It might get to the point where you have to leave so you don't compromise your principles. I hope that it doesn't get to that point and that you stay.

Well said. Sounds like the manager is narrow minded and using his authority inappropriately. It's not like he OWNS the grocery store chain-lol.
MickeyMac 11-24-2008, 08:14 PM I'm grateful I have a job but I have to admit that I dont like it. Nothing against factory work, but I have had enough of it. My job is in the auto industry so its an endangered species, but I dont fret about that(mabye I am just crazy). That said I just dont have any enjoyment about my work. It dosent challenge me on an intellectual level. I want a job that I can look forward to going to everyday.
Now to figure out my next move.
Doodyville10019 11-24-2008, 08:44 PM That sounds like the same kind of garbage my husband gets at his job. He too works in retail (will be there 4 years in February) and every time the specialist (supervisor) position opens up he's not picked for some reason or another. God knows he does everything at that store - cash office, cashier, sales, computer repair, loading and unloading of stock, plan-o-grams and more. One of his bosses sounds like your current one (his other boss is OK though, which is why he stays). The last specialist his manager picked turned out not to know anything about her subject - my husband had to teach her everything! What gives??? What is wrong with this picture??
Bottom line - I understand where you're coming from. Get out while you still can. My husband does not have that choice - he has to support himself and pay some of our household bills.
Courtnee 11-24-2008, 08:59 PM First jobs always suck. I'd just quit and find a new one. Retail stores are always hiring, so just fill out applications EVERYWHERE.
dawsongirl 11-24-2008, 10:04 PM i left early one time because if i stayed around, i'd have gotten so upset i'd have either broken things in the store or hit my boss right in the face.
what happened at your job?
Long story....let's see if I can shorten it.
I was working for an independent auto mechanic as a secretary/receptionist/cleaning woman/general peon. I got the job through my mom, because these people had their books done by my mom's boss. They knew I was decent on a computer, so around when I first started, the boss' wife asked me that if I had some downtime, could I look thru the software manual and find a way to consolidate customers (some people were in there multiple times). Ok. Well, like 7 months later I finally get around to it and she flips out on me. I honestly believe she thought I was hijacking or stealing information or something ridiculous. Granted this woman has mental issues (aka, she's bat**** crazy), but wtf? This was just the end of a whole bunch of accusatory crap that had gone on for months, with me coming home crying a few times. I was just another employee that had stormed out because these two morons had no idea how to run a business. I think my intelligence was threatening to them! So I went back to give them a resignation letter on the advice of my mom and they proceed to rake me over the coals for basically not doing anything even though they never once brought anything up to me before. ohno: I cried for HOURS. And still to this day it haunts me. It really wrecked my psyche. I think the only thing that would help is if they died in some horrible way. Get what's coming to them.
