Im having trouble with my wisdom teeth and I think im gonna have to get them pulled. The problems is that they are impacted. I have been trying to put it off, mainly cause I have no dental insurance. It looks like it's getting to the point where it's making me sick plus one side is all swolen and puffy. Im calling a dental surgeon today to get the process started. Just wanted to know if anyone here has had it done, and what was your experience like? Im a little nervous but I have to get it done before it makes me really sick. :eek3:

I had mine out a few years ago. It was no big deal for me. I saw it as an excuse to lie on the couch and eat lots of ice cream for a couple of days :happyface :D

I had mine taken out 9 years ago when I was 18. Mine were impacted to, so the had to cut then out. It hurt like a bitch, but that's just me. They gave me Vicoden for the pain. My face was swollen for about a week afterwards, and because I couldn't eat solid foods I lost about 10 pounds..

I had mine out two years ago. All four of my neighboring teeth were impacted, so I wound up having to get EIGHT teeth pulled in one sitting! I was petrified of the surgery, but it turned out fine: I sat in the chair, they gave me an IV and started talking to me about work, and the next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room with a mouth full of guaze.

I had no dreaded "dry-socket," and within three or four days, I was back to eating solid food again.

Here's the thread I posted about it at the time, in case you want to relive my lovely, fun wisdom tooth experience.

I had mine removed when I was 16. Wasn't nearly as painful as everyone warned me. Just follow your dentists instructions on how to care for them afterwards and you will be fine....

I know what you mean there! Funny, how the bill can hurt more than the surgery eh?

I had mine out years ago. Wasn't that bad at all. I just fainted when I got home but I didn't rest like the doctor said I should. I was awake thru the surgery and laughed the entire time (the laughing gas, plus I had a gorgeous dental surgeon working on me).

You'll feel a lot better once they're out. Sounds like they might put you on an antibiotic first though. If you're swelling, there could be an abcess starting and they won't want to work on you while that's going on (most won't anyway).

Yeah, I think I will be relieved once they are out. I can't even eat with out hurting it.

Yes, I had mine taken out at the beginning of my senior year of high school. It was August 29, 1997. I've always remembered that day because the day after Princess Diana was killed in Paris. Anyway, I was more nauseated than in pain - it was the other way around when my sister had hers taken out a few years later.

i got mine out last year. the first day was definitely the worst. the procedure itself went great but my jaws started to hurt after the numbness wore off and i wasn't allowed to take any painkillers or lay down until night (the surgery was in the morning). for about a week afterwards i had to take several painkillers a day until the pain stopped permanently.

as a side note, don't eat or drink anything within about eight hours of the procedure. it's life-threatening. i was repeatedly warned about how i could throw up in the middle of it and choke to death on my own vomit, but a few weeks after i had it done i read an article about someone who had this happen to them during the surgery, and no one, even the surgeons knew why. pretty scary they apparently didn't know about the risk.

I had mine taken out about 3 years ago, they were impacted, but I didn't have any trouble with them, only took one pain pill :)

i haven't had mine out yet, but my dentist said i need to. they haven't grown up and haven't given me any problems so i'm going to wait on that. ;) several of my friends have gotten them removed, and they all said the first day was probably the worst. not being able to eat solid food for a couple of days is sucky as well, so treat yourself to a nice dinner the night before. and then just have ice cream/frozen yogurt/whatever else you can eat. GOOD LUCK!!!! let us know how it goes! :bighug:

i didn't have wisdom teeth out but i had a few back molars out. the first one i was asked to be put under cause i was afraid but the 2nd time i did it with out being put under and it wasn't bad. it didn't hurt but the way he had my head positioned was like being put in some kind of wrestling hold. like i said it didn't hurt but i could hear my tooth cracking as he was removing it and the sound made me a little nervous. i did get dry socket though and that was as bad as a toothache but i had a wonderful dentist and that issue was resolved quickly.

I had mine out about 4 years ago. It wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it would be. A little pain but I remember mostly being out of it the first day and was back to normal pretty quick after that.

Hit your favourite burger joint tonight and enjoy. Then stock up on ice cream and Cream of Wheat cuz that's what you'll be eating the next few days.

Don't get popsicles (you shouldn't suck on anything or drink from a straw). One meal that I found tastes great and sticks to your ribs while you're healing is a couple of soft boiled eggs made up and some mashed potatoes (either fresh or flakes works). Then scoop out the eggs and mix them into the mashed potatoes. Kinda looks like a dog's breakfast but it tastes good and is almost like having solid food compared to the soups and such.

Prayers for you and your toothy-pegs!!

In March 1995 when I was 20 I had my wisdom teeth pulled. They were growing in sideways and would cause damage to my other teeth, so I had no choice. I remember being at home for the next two days watching some documentary about the British Invasion.

Oh, and you should go eat at a steakhouse for your last pre-op dinner. :D

And this is stupid, but what does "impacted" mean?

I had all four taken out last Feb. I had no dental insurance so I signed up for a dental discount program. I saved a lot. I was so nervous. I followed all the instructions to a tee and had no problems after the teeth were taken out. I had heard of everyone's stories some good and some not so good. But it was a breeze for me. I had 2 impacted teeth. I asked the dentist how long the procedure would take and she said 40 minutes. It was done in less than an hour. There was some pain and blood but nothing bad. You'll do just fine. Good luck!

What are "impacted wisdom teeth?"
In dental terminology an "impacted" tooth refers to a tooth that has failed to emerge fully into its expected position. This failure to erupt properly might occur because there is not enough room in the person's jaw to accommodate the tooth, or because the angulation of the tooth is improper.

I had my wisdom teeth out and my other 3 teeth out to make room for my braces, it's very painful but I'll give you advice, to help stop the bleeding put tea bags in your mouth, it sounds weird but it works!

Good luck! If you think you have dry socket at any point, go back to the dentist asap. The pain gets worst if you don't do anything about it. I didn't know anything about wisdom teeth when I got mine out. I went to a regular dentist instead of a surgeon and it hurt like mad.

Yep - it works. And rinse frequently with warm, SALTED water. But don't spit it out - let it swish over the area that needs healing, then gently let it fall out of your mouth into the sink. It also helps with getting rid of any bloody taste.

Don't spit, use straws, drink anything too hot or cold, or smoke for the next 48 hours. And of course, stay away from solid foods until you're comfortable with them.

You know you're healing well when it starts to itch and the stitches bug you. Again, don't pull on the stitches or play with them with your tongue.

Rest and you'll be fine. Oh - and no heavy lifting or housework until the bleeding is completely stopped. It could start it up bleeding again.

Impacted means it either doesn't have the room in your jaw to grow in, or because of that, it grows in sideways or crooked like in Alison's picture there. It's stuck under the gumline and can't break through causing swelling and pain and eventually possibly infections.

They definitely have to come out when that happens.

I just want to thank everyone for their advise and kind words of encouragement. It means so much to me.

Well everything went very smoothly. They gave me the 'laughing gas' first which felt so good. Then They put in the IV with the '4 Margarita's' as my doctor likes to say. As soon as he put i in I was like "wow so this is what 4 margaritas feels like." The last thing I remember was him saying "You must not be a heavy drinker" then next thing I know I woke up in the middle of surgery and jerked my head. The doctor said "Please don't move hon." Then I drifted out again. Then they are waking me up and I was done. They also said I pulled my IV out during surgery too. That's funny case my dad and my grandma did the same thing during their surgeries. Guess it runs in the family. :D I still feel numbness in my chin and lip area but over all I don't feel any pain. Thanks so much for everyone moral support, prayers and well wishes. Hugs for everyone.

Glad to hear it went well!

Yes - as a matter of fact, your reaction to the anesthetic DOES run in some families. You should mention that ahead of any future surgeries you might have so they're aware of it. Apparently I do the same and my father did. My mother actually woke up in the middle of general anesthesia - very rare! I just found that out myself a couple of years ago.

Get some rest overnight and hopefully you'll be feeling good in the morning! :)

Glad to hear that everything went well, I still have my wisdom teeth. At times they give me signs that they need to come out, but I'm too chicken LOL. I'm glad everything went well, MonarC!

Anyway, I had mine taken out June 15, 1990, right after I graduated high school. I had absolutely NO reservations about having them taken out whatsoever. Then again, I still lived with my parents at the time. The first thing I remember was being in the doctor's office somewhere in Fairfield, Ohio (south of Hamilton, where I grew up), and ISTR waking up, only to be told it was over and I didn't feel a thing. I remember having peanut butter-flavored frozen custard sometime later.
