View Full Version : The Christmas Tree Lot
Janine the Dream 11-18-2008, 11:59 AM I know this episode has been discussed before, but it a nice show with both Ozzie and Rick singing the same song. I thought I saw Connie Harper make an appearance as a woman interested in buying a Christmas Tree.
ILUVO&H 11-20-2008, 01:26 AM You probably did see Connie. Before Dave started workiong at the law office and Connie was Miss Edwards, she could be seen in lots of episodes either in the background or with small group and given one or two lines.
The Christmas Tree lot is one of my favs.
Another of my favorite Christmas episodes that I don't think is out on dvd yet is where the Fraturnity buys a piano. The whole group of Nelsons and Frat party sing a few Christmas songs. Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and Ricky sings Jingle Bells. Oh I love all the Chrstmas episodes. I wish the Christmas dvd carried all the Christmas episodes.
Janine the Dream 11-20-2008, 09:41 AM I agree, they should have come out with a Holiday DVD with all the Christmas and Thanksgiving episodes on it.
lingo68 11-21-2008, 08:58 AM The piano episode is availabe and I have it. It is on the holiday collection from millcreek.

Oh good. I lile that episode because I like singing along with them. :D
I also really like the ones where Ozzie gets all nostalgic about Christmases when the boys were small and dreams of going skating the day after Christmas.
The other one I really like when Ozzie tells the story about when he was a little boy. Ozzie's boyhood is recareated Oz is his father, Harriet's his mother David is brother Al and Ricky is Ozzie. This is one of the younger episodes. I know the name of it, I always called it Can Ozzie Make it Snow.
And Thanksgiving, glad you brought that up Janine the Dream! I love the Thanksgiving episode. I will have to dig that one out this week. :)
20 years or more after firsts seeing it my sisters and I still say "Turkey Turkey Turkey!!! " quoting from the episode. The premise is that the Nelsons go to Harriets aunts for Thanksgiving. Her aunt is Grandma Walton, Ellen Corby. Ozzie and the boys insist that they don't want a turkey at home because they will escape having to eat all those turkey leftovers. Day after Thanksgiving, Ozzie and boys keep hearing from all their friends and neighbors all the turkey leftover dishes and sandwhiches everyone is having; leaving them wanting TURKEY TURKEY TURKEY!!! Harriet tries looking all over town for a turkey after Thanksgiving with none to be found.
Ok I really have to go dig out that episode now! :D
Janine the Dream 11-21-2008, 11:27 AM I will have to watch that one again also!
honeybea 12-15-2008, 10:53 AM I finally watched the Christmas Dvd and it was so cute the way Wally was taking the older lady out at the end. Wally was smaller and shorter than I ever remembered him being. This show had at least seven Christmas shows that I can remember and I like them all, especially Busy Christmas.
Janine the Dream 12-15-2008, 11:33 AM I agree, Busy Christmas is a classic. The scene in the orphanage is very well done.
ILUVO&H 12-15-2008, 12:57 PM We should try to name all the Chritmas episodes.
honeybea 12-15-2008, 04:03 PM I believe The Girl In The Emporium was a Christmas show.
Janine the Dream 12-15-2008, 05:23 PM Yes, Wally and Rick work there and somehow Dave winds up buying a wierd shirt.
OH Nuts! 12-16-2008, 09:04 AM You probably did see Connie. Before Dave started workiong at the law office and Connie was Miss Edwards, she could be seen in lots of episodes either in the background or with small group and given one or two lines.

Actually it is out. I got it on one of those $1 DVDs (think it was by Digiview). It had The Christmas Tree Lot, A Piano For The Fraternity and an Xmas ep from The Jack Benny Show. I got it at Conway's a discount store in NYC.

I agree! It's a charming ep that I've watched many times. And poor Ozzie is soooo busy in this ep. But he better watch those multiple desserts unless he wants to split another holiday costume LOL!! And I always LOVE the eps that have a time flashback. Esp. charming is seeing the family (with grandkids0 in the end. IMO, the show at its finest.
A Piano For The Fraternity is another special charmer. (But then ALL the Xmas eps are good!!)

Yes, I remember seeing Connie here and there - usually for a very brief moment - before she "officially" became Miss Edwards, the crackerjack and ulta-poised law office sec'y par excellance!!

Poor Ozzie, he tried to do so much that night but as usual Harriet came through to save their Christmas.

That's my favorite part of the re packaged busy Christmas, see the real entire Nelson family all together. It was great to see the grandkids in there. And the first time Kris and June were even shown together on the show I would bet!
Since busy Christmas always comes out in the revisited 1964 showing, I wonder what was taken out of the original 1956 ep. to add the extra footage of O&H introducing the episode and the ending with the Nelsons all together and Rick singing in 1964? Did that make sense? Ya know what I mean?!?!?
OH Nuts! 12-17-2008, 05:55 AM Yes, Wally and Rick work there and somehow Dave winds up buying a wierd shirt.
And falling all over themselves trying to impress The Girl In The Emporium!

I know I've seen this ep once or twice in the past but forgot quite a bit of it so I went back and watched it this morning. What a nice ep it is! With the boys struggling a bit at first - first no lot then no trees but then all works out - esp. when Rick starts singing! Who can resist that! Then the sales start ringing! Glad the blind dates that the boys went out with as a favor to the landlord turned out to be nice. And yes it was nice seeing Rick then 'ol Oz singing the same song. Its nice having this ep fresh in my mind again. Oh, and, Wally look thinner than normal....his face seems thinner anyways.
I saw it on my Mill Creek set. God Bless Them.....what a wonderful DVD set they put out. Call them and let them know!! I did! Maybe they'll put out another large collection!

I have also wondered what was removed from the original episode. Of course, maybe the Nelsons wished the audience a Merry Christmas at the end of the show. Also, maybe there was another scene at the store. This would be nice to find out.
honeybea 12-17-2008, 06:03 PM I've never thought of it, but of course something had to have been edited out. I sure would like to know what it was too.

Of course! Interesting observation. I wonder too. But, the one we've all seen is still a lovely charming ep!
snorlaxnut 12-22-2008, 02:39 PM I just seen the Busy Christmas episode last night on TV. My local RTN (Retro Television Network) station has a show called Off Beat Cinema, and instead of a movie, they showed Christmas episodes of TV shows, and this O & H episode was one of them! They showed the commericals in the episode, but they cut out Rick's song. Still, it was the first episode of O & H I have seen on a TV channel in 20 years.

That episode is titled "The Miracle". It was from the second season and was originally broadcast on Christmast day 1953.

An interesting side note to the christmas episode "The Miracle" which takes place in Ozzie's hometown of Ridgefield Park, NJ where I live in the next town over, all the places that are mentioned in that episode are real and many still excist today, like the constant mentions of going sledding on a certain street (I can't remember right now) plus the numerous many mentions of recollections of Ozzies, drug store names, etc.
ILUVO&H 01-19-2009, 03:28 PM In the episodes where Ozzie mentions Ridgefileld Park, you can really tell that he has a strong affection for the town.
Lucy always talked about being from Jamestown on I Love Lucy, but it wasn't the same. With Ozzie, when he spoke about Ridgefield Park it always was more sentimental. You could tell he was a part of that community and it meant a lot to him.

Living next to Ridgefield Park for most of my life I can tell you it is still the same for the residents of that town....is is a small community and holds the record for the nations only consective 4th of July Parade at over 100....the morning of the 4th there is a baby parade down main street, there is a house decorating contest and yes as my avatar shows a real "Ozzie Nelson Drive"! And YES the Nelson childhood home still stands today on Teaneck Road where occasionally the home is photographed by visitors and neighbors come out and remember Ozzie!
Janine the Dream 01-21-2009, 12:10 PM I remember the Rialto Theatre in Ridgefield Park.
TeeVeeCloset 01-21-2009, 12:17 PM I remember the Rialto Theatre in Ridgefield Park.
It made it till last year....it showed independent films at the end...i remember seeing "Farenheit 911" and "The US vs John Lennon" there....it was annouced a few months ago it woud be closing permantely, I don't know if it met the wrecking ball yet!
Janine the Dream 01-21-2009, 12:26 PM Sorry to see the theatre close. We went there many times years ago and remember that the cashier was sometimes the ticket taker. They must have liked to keep expenses down!
