View Full Version : Has anyone heard from Fleet?
Mysty Eyes 11-15-2008, 11:39 PM I actually came in here today to see if Fleet had posted anything about the fires going on in Los Angeles. I always think of him when any part of the valley is burning.
The Sylmar "Sayre" fire seems mighty close to San Fernando on the Google map.
:(
Faith 11-15-2008, 11:42 PM I saw him posting a couple of days ago in the politics forum... I completely forgot he was from that part of California.

Yeah I hope his family and himself are alright, and in good health.
Dr. John Becker 11-16-2008, 12:05 AM I was wondering that myself. I hope Fleet's ok.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 11-16-2008, 01:46 AM Yikes, I didn't realize he lived near there. I hope everything's okay. :(
Fleet 11-16-2008, 02:51 AM Hi,
I'm okay. The fire last month was closer to me than this one. But the smoke has been drifting over here most of the time. I also noticed some ashes on the front porch and on the driveway.
Thanks for the concern, everyone. :)
Here are two photos I took just after dawn from an upstairs window...
Mysty Eyes 11-16-2008, 02:56 AM Yay!
Glad you're okay.
The smoke is bad here in Santa Monica. I can only imagine what it's like in your area. I haven't really noticed much in the way of ash the couple of times I ventured out today.
:)
Theda Bara 11-16-2008, 03:04 AM I am glad that you are okay, Tony. I was thinking about you, and I glad that you and your family are okay:)

Yeah, at times the smoke was kind of thick. And I wanted to do some bicycling!

Thanks. As usual, those who live in or just below the foothills and canyon areas are most at risk.
I am over 2.5 miles away from the nearest foothills, with hundreds of houses and many streets (and one freeway) in between.
But I still was awake watching and recording the fire until the early morning hours, just to see where it was headed to.

Oh, I know that area quite well, since I used to live in LA..=)

I wonder how many home buyers think of the fire danger when they buy a house with a big hill with a lot of brush behind it?
It would make me very uneasy.
Faith 11-16-2008, 04:01 AM Glad you and your family are okay :)
Fleet 11-16-2008, 04:21 AM Thanks, Faith.
janet42 11-16-2008, 09:47 AM I'm glad that you're ok. How do you guys in California endure brush fires and earthquakes? I thought that I had it bad with tornadoes in Indiana. You guys in California are brave people.
OH Nuts! 11-16-2008, 12:35 PM Thanks. As usual, those who live in or just below the foothills and canyon areas are most at risk.

Fleet, I didn't realize how near you were to all of this. Glad you're okay!
Stormtracker TF 11-16-2008, 11:45 PM That's scary. Glad everything is Ok.

Large (6+ magnitude) earthquakes are actually relatively rare in the valley.
There have been only two large ones during the last century- 1971 and 1994 (both 6.7 magnitude). Of course, earthquakes can't be avoided.
Fires can, though. As long as you don't live in or near a canyon or a mountain or right up against foothills with a lot of brush, the chance of someone's house being in danger of a brush fire is very slight.
The Santa Ana winds do have good points. 50 mile visibility and a few nights ago, I went for a bike ride at 11:45 PM with the temperature at 75 degrees. No jacket needed, just a T-shirt.
Here are more photos I took today. The first two show ash on the front porch and driveway (it may look like dirt but it is ash) and two more photos taken mid-afternoon Sunday showing the smoke still drifting by, mainly near the mountains.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 11-17-2008, 12:03 PM Yikes, that's terrible. I'm glad you're okay.
Yooch 11-17-2008, 06:17 PM It's good that you, and your family are doing ok., Tony. Although we Californians have had to deal with earthquakes, mudslides and earthquakes, it's still a great state to live in. Thanks for letting us know how you are doing.
janet42 11-17-2008, 10:20 PM Thanks for sharing your photographs Fleet and thanks for the information about the earthquakes and the fires.
