The piece a sh*t computer froze once again- then I was just adjusting the monitor and now there's this white blob on the right side of the monitor, with little black spots and a little bit of red. All of this came up on the screen when I touched behind the top right corner of the moniter- now it's messed up totally. I can't click anything or view anything on the right and top right corner of the screen. What should I do? I'm not wasting $150 on the Best Buy guys. I need to save up money to try to get the computer guy to fix it- I don't know if it can be fixed though. It's totally f*cked up.

Sounds like the backlight has gone. Happened to me in the summer with my laptop. I know your frustration!

Would you have an old monitor lying around or any of your friends? Maybe you could borrow it until you're in a better position to buy a new one. Even if you have it repaired, it won't be worth the cost probably.

Maybe it is that. How much would it cost to replace it, fix it or get a new one?

Plus I have a laptop computer- not a desktop, so the monitor is attached to the computer....it's not like a desktop monitor where you can pull it off and replace it easy..i dunno wtf I should do.

You're best to get a new one and you're probably looking at about $150. shop around on the internet. At least for that money, you'll be getting at least a 19" widescreen monitor. The one I'm looking at is on the Best Buy (US) website and they have one on sale. I'd go into a store in person though. You can talk these guys down or have "extras" like cables, toner, paper thrown in.

If you opt for repair, you're looking at the hassle of taking it in somewhere anyway, and being without a monitor for a week at least. And it would probably cost the same or more than a new one. These things are built to be replaced, not really repaired because of the costs.

I've got a spare, old box montior I wish I could send to you but mailing costs would be more than $150 also!

You're not the only one who's had computer problems.

This is my fourth computer; my previous 3 all crashed.

Were they all laptops? What make?

The laptop I had go was an old IBM notebook so it didn't surprise me. I just borrowed it from a guy I used to work with who has access to them.

I'm checking with someone about the backlight on Wreckless' to see if all they do is replace a bulb or something. Stand by! lol

If not, we should all get together and dump them in a pit, douse them with lighter fluid and have a bonfire!

How did you post this thread then?

Just talking to my source now, and it looks like you're screwed.

They're LCD screens - no bulbs - could be something on the mother board too, but either way, it's going to cost about $500 to replace that screen and now, you can basically get a new laptop for the same price.

The screen on a laptop is the most expensive part of it. Can't be repaired cheaply or at all.

If you do have a desk monitor, you could hookup your laptop to that, however, obviously you ain't gonna be traveling too far with that setup. (Picturing you with a 19" monitor slung into a backpack)!

Hate to say it, but looks like you're in for a new computer.

I know what he means - when the backlight goes at first, it's intermittant , and you can BARELY see things so it is possible he can get a post or two in but then it eventually goes completely black.

Who knows - if he doesn't reply again, we know that's what's happened.

Then it's a trip to library or something to use theirs. ;)

I said part of the screen isn't working- half of it. Obviously if the whole ocmputer wasn't working- I wouldn't be online and posting. Think about it.

F*ck- Thanks for helping but that sucks. I was hoping it wouldn't be $500 to fix or replace it. Figures, the most expensive part of the computer gets messed up. This sucks.

TripperFan, even if you have a warranty on the laptop- you still have to pay $500 to get it fixed/replaced? Even if it might be covered.

I am looking at what looks like a great deal for a laptop on ebay now.

A Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop, 160GB, Windows XP. My mom paid around $600-650 for the laptop I have now & I hate Windows Vista on my laptop now. Hopefully everything is good- it's currently bidding at $415...not bad right?

I am on this piece of crap computer now lol. It's working fine- like all the files are- it's just theirs a big ass chunk of the right side of the screen missing. All my Documents, the internet still work fine. I just have to minimize stuff cause I can't see stuff on the right side of the screen lol. I'm looking at a new computer now.

If and when I get a new computer, the only thing is, this computer that the monitor isn't working, that I have now, was a Christmas present my Mom let me pick out at Circuit City. As corny as it sounds, it does have sentimental value.

I got $415 to burn right now lol. I'm not rich at all but I have money saved up in accounts. Don't hate lol.

BTW Solomon, do you know or does anybody else know if Dell Inspiron laptops are fast computers? The system is Windows XP so it should be pretty fast but I don't know. I don't want to go from a slow, nice computer to another nice computer that's slow, that's why lol.

Geez - check the warranty. If it isn't that old, it should be covered for sure since it's a major part.

I know I had a Dell Inspirion (at work tho) and the keyboard had to be replaced 3 times - they came out quickly and no questions asked. Only problem was, is that it turned out it WASN'T the keyboard afterall, but some stupid configuration issue! LOL But Dell were good about the warranty part of it.

Although, I now Janice has had some bad experiences with her Dell.

The only thing I would pay $415 on is a fuzzy ep of checking in that someone is looking to get rid of so they can make more room in there basement-LOL

I have a Dell Laptop and it's ok, not fast because I have dial up

Hmmm, I can check that for you. I had an Inspirion 6000 or something like that so I'm not sure about the model.

What's the make of the laptop with the "missing link" of monitor?

Yeah maybe it will be covered- I still need to get a new good laptop though regardless lol. Damn, I've never had a problem with the keyboard on this laptop- just the mouse (besides problems with the actual computer itself).

VAIOs are good - so are most Dells. That's what I've had the past few years anyway and found little trouble with them.

I still like my desktop the best (it's an old beaten Dell that's about 4 yrs old but it's chugging along still).

I have cable. I do have a top of the line wireless router, but my cable bill is already almost $200 a month so I haven't upgraded.

I'd be bashing my head on the wall if I still had to deal with dial-up tho. I hand it to Solomon for being as quick on the boards as he is.
