View Full Version : TV stars you only consider as one certain character...
Chocoholic 11-01-2008, 04:54 PM ...even though they've moved on to another, more popular role?
Maura Tierney will always by Lisa from NewsRadio to me. I didn't care for her ER character.
I'll always think of Tony Shalhoub as Antonio from Wings. I have zero interest in Monk, and murder musteries in general.
Schmoopie 11-01-2008, 05:01 PM Julia Louis Dreyfus as Elaine (can't help myself!)
I'm the opposite of you, ChesneyLady! I can only see Tony Shalhoub as Monk!
Michael Richards as Kramer (even though he's done some other not so successful things.)
Bob Sagat as Danny Tanner (Same here; I was thinking of his raunchy stand up sets that he does.)
Andrea
ekkostar 11-01-2008, 05:54 PM Bronson Pinchot will always be Balki to me.

Me too and Alan Alda will always be Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce.
ekkostar 11-02-2008, 02:48 PM kelsey grammer as dr fraiser crane
I love Fraiser enormously and I'll always think of Kelsey as Frasier, even though I like his other work outside of the Frasier Crane realm. BTW, I was incredibly disappointed that I couldn't go see Swing Vote this summer because I was so busy with school.
andress_jade 11-02-2008, 04:07 PM Barbara Eden will always be Jeannie to me even though she was on Harper Valley, PTA.
Jane Seymour will always be Dr. Michaela Quinn to me even though she has done a ton of roles.
Joe Lando will always be Sully to me even though he was on two different soap operas.
John Ritter was till the day he died; Jack Tripper to me, even though he was on Hooperman, and 8 Simple Rules.
Now, Larry Hagman was in two memorable roles. To some he will always be JR Ewing, but to me he will always be Tony Nelson, and that's because I watched I Dream of Jeannie and not Dallas. That's just me. ;)
Betty White will always be Rose Nylund to me even though she was Sue Ann Nivens on Mary Tyler Moore and Ellen on Mama's Family.
Rue McClanahan will always be Blanche Deveraux to me even though she was on Mama's Family and Maude.
Beatrice Arthur will always be Dorothy Zbornak to me, even though she was Maude.

Neil Patrick Harris will always be Doogie Howser to me even though he is on How I Met Your Mother.
Courteney Cox will always be Monica to me even though she was on Family Ties.
Jennifer Aniston will always be Rachel to me even though she has done a ton of other roles.

Drake Hogestyn will always be John Black to me even though he was on Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

Elizabeth Montgomery, even though she came to hate the role later on, will always be Samantha Stephens to me.
Dick York will always be Darrin Stephens to me even though he was in the other show he was in. (Sorry forgot the name of the show.) :(
Bob Denver, up until the day he died was always Gilligan to me even though he was in Dobie Gillis.
There are so many more that I could come up with, but I will save those for someone else. LOL. :D

Don Knotts will always be Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show.
Alia Shawkat will always be Hannah Rayburn on State of Grace.
comedyfreak 11-02-2008, 07:37 PM Adam West will always be Batman to me.
Elizabeth Montgomery will always be Samantha to me from Bewitched.
Marlo Thomas will always be That Girl's Ann Marie.
The Cast of The Munsters will always be The Munsters
John Ritter will always be Jack Tripper.
MusicJunkie 11-02-2008, 07:45 PM some of the choices I've seen so far seem to be rather "duh" ones. Since IMO, it's meant to be actors you associate for a tv role that isn't their most iconic ones. People like Aniston as Rachel, Ritter as Jack Tripper, Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha and Kelsey Grammar as Frasier seem to be rather "duh" ones because those are their most famous and iconic roles. Now if you think of Jennifer Aniston as Ferris Bueller's sister on the short lived tv spinoff of the movie, that would fit the bill much better IMO.
MusicJunkie 11-02-2008, 07:57 PM some others, you can tell I watched a lot of WB in the day...
Eric Dane will always be Phoebe (Alyssa Milano)'s boyfriend Jason on Charmed before he's Mark Sloane on Greys.
Chris Gorham will always be Harrison from Popular before Henry on Ugly Betty
Vincent Karthieser will always be Angel's son Connor and not on Mad Men
Kristen Bell will always be Veronica Mars to me, no matter how well Heroes does in the ratings
factsoflife 11-03-2008, 02:55 PM I dont' care how good "Felicity" was to me Kerri Russell is now and forever Chloe from "Malibu Shores"...
KurtfromPitts 11-03-2008, 03:48 PM Don Knotts definitely as ANNDEEE's "Barn".
catlover79 11-03-2008, 04:50 PM I agree with all those mentioned above. I will always think of Susan Lucci as Erica Kane (All My Children), and Anthony Geary and Genie Francis as Luke and Laura (General Hospital).
repeatshistory 11-03-2008, 06:45 PM Deidre Hall will always be Dr. Marlena Evans to me even though she was on Our House as Jessie Witherspoon.
Funny, but Deidre will always be Electra Woman to me! :D

phoebe7165 11-03-2008, 10:37 PM Adam West will always be Batman to me.
I agree, although he is pretty funny on Family Guy!!
Carroll O'Conner - Archie Bunker rather than Bill Gillespie
Lucille Ball - Lucy Ricardo rather than all the Lucy characters she played after that
Vivian Vance - Ethel Mertz rather than all the times she played Viv or Vivian after that
William Frawley - Fred Mertz rather than Bub O'Casey
McLean Stevenson - Henry Blake rather than Larry Alder

Malcolm Jamal Warner will always be Theo Huxtable
andress_jade 11-04-2008, 07:49 PM Funny, but Deidre will always be Electra Woman to me! :D
Funny you should say that, because Deidre Hall has been Marlena Evans longer than any other character she has ever played! That's why I picked that character over any other she has ever played. She will always be Marlena Evans to me. :)
It is the most popular and most memorable character she has played and will ever play.
catlover79 11-04-2008, 07:53 PM Funny you should say that, because Deidre Hall has been Marlena Evans longer than any other character she has ever played! That's why I picked that character over any other she has ever played. She will always be Marlena Evans to me. :)
It is the most popular and most memorable character she has played and will ever play.
Deidre Hall's first soap job was on Y&R, in the early 1970s. I agree - it is hard to imagine her on any other show, she is just so synonymous with the role of Marlena.
comedyfreak 11-05-2008, 07:00 AM Funny, but Deidre will always be Electra Woman to me! :D
Me too! I never seen World Turns, Electra Woman was the first thing I saw her in so that's who I identify her as and second is her tv Mom character on Our House.
Goldilocks 11-05-2008, 11:56 AM I don't care what she's done since Jean Smart will always be Charlene Fraser Stillfield from "Designing Women" .
Me too! I can't see her as anyone else. She was so perfect for that role!
Kristen Johnson will ALWAYS be Sally Solomon. I couldn't get used to her as that nurse supervisor in her brief stint on "ER" because I kept seeing Sally.
Courteney Cox will always be Monica Gellar. In spite of her playing Alex Keaton's girlfriend on "Family Ties" and the Lucy character on "Dirt", she will always be the annoying, neat freak, obsessive compulsive Monica to me.
factsoflife 11-05-2008, 08:02 PM though she's been on several shows Kim Fields will always be Dorothy "tootie" ramsey to me...
and likewise, Erika Aleksander will always be Cousin Pam from "The Cosby Show" to me.
Raven Symone will always be Nicole from "hanging with mr. cooper".
James 11-06-2008, 03:03 AM the guy who played Al Bundy....he will always be Al
That was Ed O'Neill.
andress_jade 11-06-2008, 10:02 PM Me too! I never seen World Turns, Electra Woman was the first thing I saw her in so that's who I identify her as and second is her tv Mom character on Our House.
Actually, she isn't on As the World Turns, she's on Days of our Lives and has been since 1976. Her character on Our House was Jessie Witherspoon. Sorry, wasn't trying to sound mean or snobby, just letting you know. Please don't be offended. ;)
I just remembered someone else. Chad Allen played her son, David on Our House as well as playing Matthew Cooper later on, on Dr. Quinn. He will always be Matthew Cooper to me.:)

and Shannen Doherty played her daughter on "Our House", but to me she'll always and forever be Brenda Walsh from "Beverly Hills, 90210" and Heather Duke from "Heathers"... an iconic series and iconic movie from my generation.
megamanj2004 11-07-2008, 01:23 PM Soleil Moon Frye - will always be remembered as "Punky Brewster," even though I saw her a few times on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," I barely remember her role on there.
Gary Coleman - even though he despises his character from "Diff'rent Strokes" these days, like it or not, he'll always be remembered as Arnold Jackson on "Diff'rent Strokes."
Rick Schroder - I always remembered him as Ricky Stratton on "Silver Spoons" and even though he went on to star on "NYPD Blue," I didn't see much of him on there.
Leonard Nimoy - Will always be remembered for his role as Mr. Spock on "Star Trek" even though he went on to another Paramount-TV produced show in "Mission: Impossible" as Paris, the very season after the original "Star Trek" ended.
Jack Klugman - I remembered him best as Oscar Madison on "Odd Couple, The" and also became known as Dr. Quincy on "Quincy," I thought that sitcoms were better suited for him since I heard he hated working on "Quincy" since he butted heads quite a lot w/ the brass.
Tony Randall - I remember him best as Felix Unger on "Odd Couple, The" and also went on to "Love Sidney," but never saw much of the show outside the one ep. TV Land aired in 2005.
IGNTBone 11-07-2008, 11:50 PM Robert Culp as Bill Maxwell from The Greatest American Hero
wkomorow 11-08-2008, 01:25 PM Pat Routlege as Hyancyth Bukect
George Takei as Mr Sulu
John Inman as Wilberforce Humphries
The Nelson family as themselves - even though they were different in real life
factsoflife 11-08-2008, 10:04 PM Madeline Zima will always be Gracie Sheffield from "The Nanny" and i was so grossed out to see her trying to sleep with David Duchovny on "Califronication" i was like "ewwwww gracie sheffield wants to sleep with Agent Fox Mulder" that's so gross...
Big C 11-08-2008, 10:09 PM Can it be someone who had only one big role?
catlover79 11-09-2008, 04:41 PM Madeline Zima will always be Gracie Sheffield from "The Nanny" and i was so grossed out to see her trying to sleep with David Duchovny on "Califronication" i was like "ewwwww gracie sheffield wants to sleep with Agent Fox Mulder" that's so gross...
puke: That is one disturbing image...
factsoflife 11-09-2008, 06:37 PM puke: That is one disturbing image...
The whole show was ruined for me when i realized who she was and that she was trying to sleep with him... Well, actually the sick thing is in the first or second episode he does sleep with her before finding out she is the daughter of his ex-wifes new husband. so gross. i couldn't stand the show after that.
strawberrybigmac 11-09-2008, 07:08 PM Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing
MikeLutton 11-10-2008, 01:29 AM Jimme walker J J Evans j J Evans good times

I'm glad I never watched this show!!
70s show watcher 11-11-2008, 01:27 AM i dont care how many tv apperences she has made or how many movies she has been in but to me joanna gleason will always be morgan winslow from hello larry
Big C 11-11-2008, 02:46 AM I know it's her only role of significance, but Angela Watson (Step By Step's Karen) will always be my ultimate heartthrob.
To me, for years, she was the most beautiful girl I ever laid my eyes on.
Chocoholic 11-11-2008, 01:06 PM I think it's interesting when you get to know and love someone in a certain role and they take on a totally different character. I think some actors get identified too much as a certain character and that's why they have so much trouble finding success in another role. People can't accept them as anyone else.
Another one for me is Ted Danson. Even though I like both Cheers and Becker, he's still Sam Malone to me.
