View Full Version : Shows That Got Sillier As They Went Along Adamantium 10-24-2008, 11:45 PM NewsRadio Scrubs Boy Meets World Charles In Charge Married with Children What are some others? Schmoopie 10-24-2008, 11:57 PM I'd add 8 Simple Rules; when they decided to cast David Spade as Kate's nephew. That totally ruined the show for me! Andrea DSfan 10-25-2008, 12:30 AM That 70s Show (last season) Boy Meets World (Eric becoming dumber and just constant whining) Family Matters (really strange with all the inventions and the France kidnapping--weird) tv star collector 10-25-2008, 08:47 AM The Beverly Hillbillies Laverne & Shirley Mork & Mindy Welcome Back, Kotter The final seasons of all these shows were pretty dismal, in my opinion. oz615 10-25-2008, 09:24 AM Last 2 seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Chocoholic 10-25-2008, 11:14 AM I agree with NewsRadio. I also think Wings got really silly after Joe and Helen got married. The Simpsons also got a lot more silly with all of Homer's crazy adventures. Mikado 10-25-2008, 12:32 PM Happy Days just got dumber and dumber, the more they featured the "Fonz" JulieSomoski 10-25-2008, 01:45 PM Just add "Every ABC Show" to this list. Think about it - it seems like every hit show on ABC eventually got cumbed down by the network. Roseanne, Full House, Family Matters, Boy Meets World, Step by Step, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, 8 Simple Rules, Hope and Faith, The Drew Carey Show, even Home Improvement, just to name a few. The only that kind of avoids this list is Three's Company - that pretty much maintained its quality the entire series, without getting crazier by the season. Furienna 10-25-2008, 03:19 PM Soaps like "Dallas" and "Dynasty" have a tendency to get sillier with time. I guess they started running out of better ideas. Fallon97 10-25-2008, 04:34 PM Charmed. tv star collector 10-25-2008, 06:49 PM Just add "Every ABC Show" to this list. One exception: Danny Arnold decided to end Barney Miller while it was still on top. PrettyinPink55 10-25-2008, 07:48 PM Family Matters 7th Heaven Full House IGNTBone 10-25-2008, 07:55 PM As much as I hate to say it...Seinfeld. Although, even those episodes had their moments. That's very true...of course, 3s Company couldnt really get much sillier than it already was! *Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-26-2008, 03:05 PM The only that kind of avoids this list is Three's Company - that pretty much maintained its quality the entire series, without getting crazier by the season. I agree. The only way in which they were guilty of anything related to that was in regards to individual characters like Chrissy and Mr. Furley. catlover79 10-26-2008, 04:38 PM Much as I love Bewitched, it became sillier and goofier as time went on. Compare the first two seasons to the last few years and you'll see what I mean. BensonFan 10-26-2008, 05:39 PM Much as I love Bewitched, it became sillier and goofier as time went on. Compare the first two seasons to the last few years and you'll see what I mean. Definitely...it almost became unwatchable, which is sad. Purffin 10-26-2008, 06:13 PM "Roseanne" after they won the lottery it was never the same, also "the simpsons" the story lines are crazy now instead of simple everyday but funny stuff. 70s show watcher 10-26-2008, 08:00 PM mash got siller and sillier in seasons 9 and 10 some times to the point of being unwatchable with eps where the whole plot revolved around things like klingers goat eating the payroll the pouring of cement in the or and a bowling match actully now that i think about it season 11 had some werid silly eps too Fleet 10-27-2008, 02:55 AM Much as I love Bewitched, it became sillier and goofier as time went on. Compare the first two seasons to the last few years and you'll see what I mean. Not only sillier, but a lot of recycled scripts. MusicJunkie 10-27-2008, 03:33 AM not a sitcom, but Charmed is a perfect example. Watch episodes from the last three or four seasons and you'd be hardpressed to realize this show once appealed to adult audiences TJL 10-27-2008, 03:54 AM Personally, I think Married With Children was much funnier in the later years, with Al getting beat up and knocked around like a crash test dummy, Peg with her giant hairdo and Kelly as the uber bimbo idiot. It was slapstick at it's best. Much better than the boring first season. catlover79 10-27-2008, 09:18 AM Not only sillier, but a lot of recycled scripts. You said it!! Adamantium 10-27-2008, 04:44 PM Personally, I think Married With Children was much funnier in the later years, with Al getting beat up and knocked around like a crash test dummy, Peg with her giant hairdo and Kelly as the uber bimbo idiot. It was slapstick at it's best. Much better than the boring first season. In recent years I've come to enjoy the later years more, for the reasons you've mentioned. I remember when FX went from the final season back to the first and it was a little boring. Even though I've always said I like Steve better than Jefferson. The later years are more laugh out loud funny. I just wanted to state that this thread isn't about shows that got crappier or "jumped the shark". All the shows I list, I loved all the way through. It's just some shows tend to go silly. Watching seasons 1 - 6 of "Scrubs" in about three weeks made me think about that. That show got extremely silly. And when you go back to the beginning, it's so different. JulieSomoski 10-27-2008, 05:10 PM That's very true...of course, 3s Company couldnt really get much sillier than it already was! Exactly - it was silly to begin with, but never went off the edge with its storylines as time progressed. Jude The Obscure 10-27-2008, 07:52 PM The Lucy Show By the time Viv left and Lucy moved to LA, it became the "BIG GUEST STAR MEETS LUCY" episode almost every week and the writers threw out any sense of continuity it had with the Danfield era. Lucy at times forgot she had kids, forgot she graduated college (as they had her go back to high school to get her diploma), forgot she had a brain!! Tubehead 10-27-2008, 10:04 PM Quatam leap. he strating to leaping intofamouse people. i didn't like the ending of it to much. I love lucy I DIDN'T LIke when they moved to the country.i do like some epsidoes. Adamantium 10-27-2008, 11:51 PM Quatam leap. he strating to leaping intofamouse people. i didn't like the ending of it to much. Yeah, they even broke the rule about Sam leaping just within his lifetime. As in one episode, he leaps back to the Civil War. repeatshistory 10-28-2008, 04:07 AM Both Xena and Hercules got MUCH sillier as time went on. I found those later episodes really entertaining though. comedyfreak 10-28-2008, 08:16 AM Batman Lost In Space-Went from serious sci-fi to camp to compete with Batman. The Munsters-It was somewhat serious to silly during the 2nd season. TJL 10-28-2008, 09:01 AM Both Xena and Hercules got MUCH sillier as time went on. I found those later episodes really entertaining though. Without a doubt the best Hercules/Zena episodes were the ones that went for laughs. esl 10-28-2008, 09:37 AM The British sit-com Are You Being Served became a bad parody of itself by the last two seasons. The show was always a tad silly but the basic plots were believable. By the end, if they were not recycling a script, the plots were just painfully silly and unrealistic. 71dude 10-28-2008, 11:39 AM Alice Mr. Belvedere The Brady Bunch Facts of Life Golden Girls The Jeffersons Laverne & Shirley MrRetro_08 10-28-2008, 02:28 PM Happy Days got more unrealistic as time went by. For example when Fonzie survived when he was in the garage explosion  Buffyboy323 10-28-2008, 03:38 PM Without a doubt the best Hercules/Zena episodes were the ones that went for laughs. I agree. It was especially great whenever Xena would beat guys up with fish! And then there were those times everyone started bursting into song.... Buffyboy323 10-28-2008, 03:43 PM Personally, I think Married With Children was much funnier in the later years, with Al getting beat up and knocked around like a crash test dummy, Peg with her giant hairdo and Kelly as the uber bimbo idiot. It was slapstick at it's best. Much better than the boring first season. I agree with this too. Married With Children didn't really pick up until the third or fourth season. I liked when the show put everything it had into being as ridiculous and absurb as it could be. And it was beyond trashy. I loved it! Buffyboy323 10-28-2008, 03:51 PM Exactly - it was silly to begin with, but never went off the edge with its storylines as time progressed. If anything, Three's Company became somewhat of a smarter show as the years went by. JulieSomoski 10-28-2008, 06:26 PM If anything, Three's Company became somewhat of a smarter show as the years went by. That's true - I think once Terri came in, the "stupidity" factor of the show kind of stopped, and the show became more about the storylines, which is one reason I always liked the later seasons better. Nurses - It went from being semi-serious and comical to just downright slapstick-ish in S3. catlover79 11-05-2008, 04:39 PM Good Times - It fell into the trap once most of the eps. became too focused on JJ and his antics Moonlighting - it really got sillier as the run went on after S3. Nurses - It went from being semi-serious and comical to just downright slapstick-ish in S3. Nurses only lasted 3 seasons, didn't it? megamanj2004 11-07-2008, 01:29 PM Nurses only lasted 3 seasons, didn't it? Yes it did. Septemeber 1991 until 1994. And when S3 rolled by, the show became really slapstick-ish with the entrance of Loni Anderson. S2 was sometimes silly when David Rasche first came along, but S3 was just god-awfully outright silly and slapstick-ish. Chocoholic 11-07-2008, 04:30 PM I remember Nurses. That show never had much of a chance. The last season was awful. 70s show watcher 11-08-2008, 12:49 AM I remember Nurses. That show never had much of a chance. The last season was awful.it sure was catlover79 11-08-2008, 03:20 PM Yes it did. Septemeber 1991 until 1994. And when S3 rolled by, the show became really slapstick-ish with the entrance of Loni Anderson. S2 was sometimes silly when David Rasche first came along, but S3 was just god-awfully outright silly and slapstick-ish. Thanks for clarifying!! The saving grace of the last season - the guest appearances of Gregory Sierra (:eyes:) as Gina's father. Will and Grace Fanatic 11-08-2008, 07:16 PM Married with children for sure. I mean they even had one episode where aliens come to steal Al's socks. That was very odd. Big C 11-08-2008, 10:06 PM Married... With Children The early years were more dialogue-based; eventually, the physical comedy came into focus. 88survivor 11-09-2008, 09:16 AM Also, Peg and Al acted more as a couple then before they poked fun at one another. Yes, in the early years they were saying things to each other in nasty ways, but as they progressed in the later, they were at each other throats and going at every direction they were going at. catlover79 11-09-2008, 04:25 PM Also, Peg and Al acted more as a couple then before they poked fun at one another. Yes, in the early years they were saying things to each other in nasty ways, but as they progressed in the later, they were at each other throats and going at every direction they were going at. That was a trend that happened to ELR's Ray and Debra in later years as well. |
