View Full Version : Britcoms on your PBS station
friendsfan77 10-24-2008, 01:07 PM I was going to post this in the ATGB thread, but I didn't want it to go off-topic. For those of you who have Britcoms on your PBS station, or maybe if not on there, somewhere else, what is the schedule like?
Here, Georgia Public Broadcasting has a whole night of Britcoms every Saturday and it is as follows:
8:00 PM - Keeping Up Appearances
8:30 PM - Are You Being Served?
9:00 PM - Waiting for God
9:30 PM - As Time Goes By
10:00 PM - A Fine Romance
10:30 PM - To The Manor Born
11:00 PM - Last of the Summer Wine
11:30 PM - Fawlty Towers
LeeBlue 10-24-2008, 03:20 PM I wish we had more showings here in Western New York but at least we have a few.
On Saturday eveninga:
8:00 PM - Rosemary and Thyme
9:00 PM - Keeping Up Appearances
9:30 PM - As Time Goes By
Various shows on Monday thru Friday at noon:
Keeping Up Appearances, As Times Goes By, Last of the Summer Wine, Waiting for God
ChicoSatis 01-04-2009, 09:39 PM I LOVE To The Manor Born. Bought the entire series on DVD.
Here in New Jersey it is currently:
Saturday night:
9:00- Last Of The Summer Wine
9:30- As Time Goes By
10:00- One Foot In The Grave
10:30- Waiting For God
11:00- The Thin Blue Line
11:30- The Black Adder (3rd Series currently running)
I have to say that One Foot In The Grave is currently my Favorite. The character of Victor Meldrew is BRILLIANT. I laugh every time I here any one say "I don't believe it" now.
I look forward to it all week long. My Saturday night britcom fest. I'm a musician and when I watch these shows I ALWAYS wind up writing at least 1 piece of music. As of now they are off the britcoms and showing Il Divo concerts to try and raise money for the station. If they REALLY want to raise money they shouls just play Britcoms 24/7. Oh well...
HAve a good one.:)
valeedragon 03-26-2009, 01:09 PM That's great that you can view so many. I'm in Nevada, but get satellite out of Salt Lake City. Our PBS Station has always aired Red Dwarf on Saturday Nights at 9:30pm PST/10:30pm MST for at least the last 17 years. Everything else alternates. Right now we have Are You Being Served? and Last of the Summer Wine on weeknights, and (I know it's not exactly a Britcom) Monarch of the Glen on Sundays.
LeeBlue 05-24-2009, 05:05 PM My PBS station is pulling Keeping Up Appearances -- it's midway through the series -- I'm really bummed out!
MariposaLKB 05-28-2009, 04:11 PM Mine hardly shows any, anymore. As Time Goes By is on every weeknight at 11 and on Sundays for an hour at 9 PM, preceded by 2 episodes of KUA and 2 of AYBS. That is about it. Used to also get Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, To the Manor Born, Good Neighbors, Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, One Foot in the Grave, Chef!, and maybe some others I am forgetting right now--those were 20-30 years ago in various combinations (showing my age LOL)!

What a great line up! That was the line up that got me hooked on Britcoms. At this date the present line up locally is:
So Haunt Me
Good Nieghbors/The Good Life
KUA
AYBS
ATGB
ATGB
I think ATGB has run twice a week for more than a decade, usually followed by something from Masterpiece. Last night, if you would allow me to indulge, I had not planned to watch "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" on Masterpiece. But it came on and the face and voice of the lead character had me so puzzled. I knew it was someone I liked, but who? Turned out to be Mathew Rhys of "The Americans". What a superb actor!

Great show. I love it!
Becca3557 09-01-2013, 02:48 PM We get 3 PBS stations here in the Philly suburbs - WHYY (12) based in Wilmington/Philadelphia, 23 - NJTV, and WLVT (39) from the Allentown area. Most of the best Britcom viewing is on 39 on Saturday nights:
8:00 -9:00 Keeping Up Appearances
9:00 -10:00 As Time Goes By
10:00 -11:00 Are You Being Served? My personal favorite
11:00 - 12:00 Waiting for God
Channel 23 has some sporadic showings, but it is mainly on 'Appearances'. Channel 12 used to show a different Britcom every weekday evening, but rarely air any of them now.

Becca,
I wonder if you or anyone else has heard similar announcements by their PBS affiliate?
Last night, just prior to airing AYBS, GPB announced it would no longer run the show because of a dispute with the estate of one of the writers.
robyrob 09-09-2013, 12:18 PM all our PBS shows is Good Neighbors (which I haven't really been able to get into) and Mr Bean - which I already own all of them and have seen a million times (but still enjoy).
- but they have just added Dirk Gently, so there is hope for them yet!!!
Hebburn 10-21-2013, 10:30 AM The line up here as I stated before:
So Haunt Me
Good Nieghbors/The Good Life
KUA
AYBS
ATGB
ATGB
Has been changed since AYBS was canceled due to a conflict with a writer's estate. It was replaced with season one then season two of "The Cafe".
A substantial improvement IMO. The Cafe is a present time, very warm, and well done, mild situation comedy.
Hebburn 12-20-2013, 08:37 PM We've just finished a fund drive. During the drive, they know people look ahead to see what's going to air after the drive. So they list a great line up to get you to donate. Can't blame them, I guess. :D It probably won't stay this way but check out the line up for this Saturday night!
1. So Haunt Me
2. The Good Life/Good Neighbors
3. KUA
4. The Cafe
5. ATGB

7. The Vicar of Dibley

SitcomsOffline 12-27-2013, 11:45 PM Several years ago, the PBS affiliate here in Detroit would air Mr. Bean (the sitcom) and The Benny Hill Show during the weekend (Saturday?) evenings.
LeeBlue 01-04-2014, 11:14 AM Recently discovered a BCC show -- Death in Paradise.
Although it is a detective series, the show has a lot of humor.
Hebburn 01-28-2014, 05:40 PM Presently, the Britcom line up is very repetitious.
Hebburn (re-run)
The Good Life (almost done)
KUA
KUA

I enjoy the first two very much, but that's it. They've shown the others a hundred times.
PBS does make up for it with several helpings of Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Doc Martin, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and DCI Banks, throughout the rest of the week, so I guess I can't complain much.
LUNCH 01-29-2014, 04:35 PM PBS should really mix it up more and add a lot of older Britcoms, because as far as classic British comedies on American television go,PBS is the only game in town now.

I would agree that they are the only game in town as far as Britcoms and of course would love to see more variety.
Can't understand why BBC America (which has a huge redundancy in their line up) doesn't show some that PBS doesn't want to pay for. It would seem they could get them cheap???
Get those old tapes off the shelf! :D
LUNCH 02-21-2014, 02:04 PM Yeah, you'd think a channel that calls itself "BBC" America would show plenty of Britcoms, expecially the older ones. Afterall they used to show them, but like so many other cable channels I'm afraid BBC America have become a joke.
Hebburn 04-01-2014, 10:45 AM I've been canceled! Or the SHOW has been.:D
Another reason to doubt the wisdom of the BBC. As I am thoroughly enjoying season 2 on PBS, I find this!

The show was current and FUNNY. And from what I've read, quite popular. It will be missed.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Heard about it the other day. Must be pretty good.
Hebburn 05-11-2014, 10:53 AM Been about 6 months, but the local PBS brought back AYBS. Interesting in the historical sense in that they started with the 1972 B&W pilot. The only B&W episode of the show. Had never seen it. Actually it's one of the better episodes. Full of one liners.
Willbo 07-06-2014, 12:30 PM I noticed that Georgia Public Television brought back Are You Being Served? also. So glad to have it back.

Agree. Can't say I'm happy with the summer line up but, going several months without seeing AYBS made me realize how much I enjoyed the old show. Like you, I'm glad it's back.

Hebburn 09-02-2014, 09:19 PM The PBS station in Washington actually has a whole subchannel with UK programming. Sadly, after starting with lots of Britcoms a couple of years ago, it's switched over largely to mysteries. Remaining sitcoms on the subchannel or the main channel:
My Family
Fawlty Towers
Blandings
Last of the Summer Wine
'Allo 'Allo
Benny Hill
Keeping Up Appearances
Red Dwarf
Still, way better than GPB at the moment. That's what I get for contributing! :D
Finnegan 09-14-2014, 02:24 PM Right now we've got:
Keeping Up Appearances
Last of the Summer Wine

Doc Martin
Are You Being Served?
We had Death in Paradise until about a month ago. I hope they'll bring it back. I really liked that show. We've had Waiting for God, Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley in the past. I wish they'd bring those back too.

I agree. For some reason the local PBS thinks all people want is new material. New Britcoms may or may not be enjoyable, but I think most Britcom lovers would be very happy to see the old classics ran over and over. (with the odd "new" one here and there) There are enough old shows that it would take a long time before they ran out of shows and had to start over.
But, I certainly miss the ole Saturday night Britcom run of 4 to 5 classic Britcoms in one evening.
NordiqueSmith 09-15-2014, 04:28 PM methinks PBS stations have to play the ignorant card and promote the long and winding road it takes to acquire the rights to Britcoms in order to keep the pledges, or now called ''gifts'' or donations'' rolling in from the people who can't or are not aware of how easy it is to get the entire series on disc for at least half of an amount of a ''pledge''. That's what I've been doing. Fortunately, KERA does a decent job in keeping a balance of new and the classics, tending towards the latter.

robyrob 09-15-2014, 06:41 PM our PBS is still pretty terrible for Britcoms - they were showing Good Neighbors and Mr Bean, but they dropped those and now they are only showing One Foot In The Grave (at least they are showing 5 episodes a week instead of the 2 per week on the previous ones)
- HOWEVER - they are now showing Douglas Adams' "Dirk Gently" weekly again (of course the series only has 4 episodes so they will probably drop it again after this run)
robyrob 09-15-2014, 06:44 PM I've been writing to BBC America regularly asking them to show ANY Britcoms again - anything is better than their week-long marathons of Top Gear, Star Trek TNG and Kitchen Nightmares; which seem to comprise 98% of their weekly schedule now.

I think most know they can get the DVD set cheaper than the average membership pledge. But, if you want to get ALL of them, the dollar amount could pile up eventually.
But the real thing is when the shows are on TV, friends across the viewing area can watch together and and discuss later or even during. And personally, I guess I'm spoiled, but I've grown quite found of a relaxing evening of Britcoms. Especially when you can enjoy them with the kids and grand kids. I have DVD sets of several Britcoms, but would rather watch on TV. I just hate to see it disappear. Odd that PBS can't understand and take advantage of that.
It's not the end of the world but, you send them $35 or so a year, and they promise to "keep up that quality of viewing". Then instead of a classic Britcom, you get some crap that's not even a Britcom, let alone a classic. No more.

our PBS dropped ALL of the britcoms again for the past month or so, but GOOD NEWS - they are going to be airing the first episode of Moone Boy next week!!! hopefully they start showing one per week, the only other place I've been able to see it is on Hulu
Moone Boy has Chris O'Dowd starring as an imaginary friend to a weird kid in Boyle, Ireland.
LarkRiser 02-28-2015, 01:19 PM Man, I feel lucky. My PBS station has been great for Britcoms ever since classic Doctor Who got me into PBS/British TV back in the mid 90s. Our current lineup, and it has been relatively stable for at least a decade now, is...
Monday-Friday
1:00 alternates between Black Adder, The Café (only one I occasionally watch out of this batch), May to December, Open All Hours....and something I'm forgetting
1:30- Last of the Summer Wine
2:00- Are You Being Served
2:30- Keeping Up Appearances
3:00- As Time Goes By
3:30- Ballykissangel
4:30- Lark Rise To Candleford (my favorite show ever!)
Fawlty Towers, Waiting For God, 'Allo 'Allo and a few others sporadically air at odd times over the weekend.
Oh, Doc Martin and Death In Paradise air on Thursday night assuming the count as Britcoms.

Add AYBS to that and that's all we have. Been that way for about a year now. I subscribe to Hulu for $8 a month and get scads of Britcoms and drama!!!
NordiqueSmith 07-10-2015, 04:16 PM thats a pity
seems like PBS should create another subchannel that focuses on Britcoms given the vast inventory of shows from the 60's on up, many that never made it to American TV..... :talk:
such a channel would result pledge $ from me :yippee:

I agree that the market would be there. But for now, I'm much happier with a subscription that I can cancel any time and shows I can watch when convenient on Hulu and later, on Acorn. My present problem is finding the time to watch all the good shows they offer. Well worth the pennies a day.
Tired of sending pledges, then getting stuck with a crappy line up only to be followed by another begathon. PBS acts as if they have no competition. They know they can always fall back on Gov money, no matter how crappy the programming.
Having said all that, I'm very happy with the drama line up on Sunday night most of the year. So,once in awhile, I send them a small "gift" but always below the minimum pledge. And I voice my thoughts when doing so.
NordiqueSmith 07-19-2015, 11:12 PM I just made a commitment to acquire all the British Comedy that isn't in that PBS mainstream, which, for me concentrates too much on the recent in PBS terms rather than the past...everything is out there for sale or trade, and at various fathoms of the seas of the Internet

LETTERL 08-18-2015, 10:27 AM Our PBS station occasionally shows "As Time Goes By" and "One Foot in the Grave" for a couple of weeks at a time...then they won't air them at all for a couple of weeks...then the comedies will be air again. "One Foot In the Grave" replaced "Keeping Up Appearances". I've seen all of "As Time Goes By" and am really enjoying "One Foot In the Grave" (it's my first time seeing it) but still prefer KUA, although I've seen all of the episodes multiple times.
A few years ago, the PBS station had a nice Saturday night block, which also included AYBS and "Waiting for God"...but now they are down to just two comedies, and as I said earlier, some weeks they don't show any of the comedies at all.
What's really strange is they still show 2003 episodes of Eastenders; Wendy Richard is on there now again but I know she died several years ago and they don't seem to be showing updated episodes.

It's pretty tough to argue that government funded television is "necessary" with 500 channels.
PBS would trot out their few good shows on pledge week (really month) and as soon as pledge time was over they'd go back to their old reruns and political propaganda. They're pretty much irrelevant now.
