View Full Version : New Shows Already Facing the Ratings Ax

It sure is a rough, unforgiving world in Television Land. The fall season isn't even a month old and already Tinseltown analysts are taking odds on which shows are in hot water and might see cancelation before May.
"The Hollywood Reporter" has made a list of shows on the bubble, the term for those that are teetering on the edge of being canceled due to low ratings. Just be aware that much can change in just a couple of weeks if ratings improve. Here's who is in trouble so far:
"Opportunity Knocks" (ABC) - This new game show from producer Ashton Kutcher ("Punk'd") has been pulled from the schedule. "Variety" is reporting that it has been canceled.
"Hole in the Wall" (Fox) - This game show, in which contestants contort their bodies through walls with oddly-shaped holes, is close to getting dunked itself.
"Dirty Sexy Money" (ABC) - What started out as an intriguing drama about a lawyer (Peter Krause) who takes care of the estate of a wicked socialite family has turned into just another soap opera.
"Pushing Daisies" (ABC) - The network's new darling fantasy series about a pie maker has been slipping in its sophomore year. In the past full Nielsen ratings, it was ranked 60th. But the next week, it gained a significant number of viewers.
"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Fox) - This science fiction
series, which lost its traction about two-thirds of the way into its first season with a wayward storyline, drew only 5.4 million viewers, the same rating as "Daisies." Odds are this show, unlike the Terminator, will not be back.
"The Ex-List" (CBS) - The series, based on an Israeli television show, is about a woman who is told by a psychic that the man she will marry is a former boyfriend. So she spends each episode going through her past relationships. Apparently, she should have spent that time looking for viewers. The fact the series might be in disarray after the creator already left over creative differences certainly doesn't help.
"Life" (NBC) - Actually, I was puzzled on how this crime drama about a formerly imprisoned cop got renewed for a second season in the first place. It was ranked 58th in the past full ratings, which may confirm my suspicions.
"Lipstick Jungle" (NBC) - The broadcast network version of "Sex and the City" (both shows share the same executive producer) may be proving that female viewers want all of the titillating language and sex, which a network show can't deliver.
"Everybody Hates Chris" (CW) - Though this sitcom loosely based on Chris Rock's youth has been languishing somewhat in the ratings, I would imagine the network will be working hard to keep this critically acclaimed series.
"The Game" (CW) - To give you an idea of how poorly this veteran sitcom is doing, a rerun of "Gossip Girl" on the same network had better ratings the same week as a new episode of "The Game."

Honestly, I'm not surprised about either of these ridiculous shows.
"Dirty Sexy Money" (ABC) - What started out as an intriguing drama about a lawyer (Peter Krause) who takes care of the estate of a wicked socialite family has turned into just another soap opera.

That's gotta be hurting ABC right now, however I think they will give both time, I think the strike is still leaving it's effect, I myself used to watch at least 3 shows a night, now I'm down to two shows a week
"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Fox) - This science fiction

No worries here, It has already been given a full second season.
"The Ex-List" (CBS) - The series, based on an Israeli television show, is about a woman who is told by a psychic that the man she will marry is a former boyfriend. These Shows Suck anyways!
"Life" (NBC) - Actually, I was puzzled on how this crime drama about a formerly imprisoned cop got renewed for a second season in the first place. It was ranked 58th in the past full ratings, which may confirm my suspicions.
This show is pretty good, I hope it doesn't kick the bucket, and if the 58th ranking was the same week as PD was 60th, then thats pretty good for a show nobody knows about.
"Everybody Hates Chris" (CW) - Though this sitcom loosely based on Chris Rock's youth has been languishing somewhat in the ratings, I would imagine the network will be working hard to keep this critically acclaimed series.
This show will continue on with low ratings like it has the past 4 years.
I hope the ratings for Pushing Daisies continue to climb. The show is great. There is nothing else like it on TV right now. We need originality!
;)
Pavan 10-20-2008, 02:09 PM How about that episode last week TJL? I loved it!!! Best episode of the year. Father Dowling, LOL!!!!
DSM just needs to crawl somewhere and die. I'm sick of the insults to "Dynasty" by comparing DSM to it.
MusicJunkie 10-20-2008, 02:53 PM I don't care for DSM. I like "adult" shows about families such as Brothers And Sisters, but unlike B&S, there's nothing redeeming about any of the members of the family in DSM, whereas no matter how different the five siblings are on B&S, they're all good characters and you like all of them. Can't say the same for DSM.
Jude The Obscure 10-20-2008, 02:58 PM Funny the article hasn't mentioned "Worst Week" on CBS.
DSfan 10-20-2008, 03:22 PM Yeah, they should have made it into a movie. I can see that being a really funny movie that you go to that isn't like a good quality movie but just something funny.
I think the problem with a lot of TV shows today is the people who are creating them (unless it is a game show) they might be making a plot that should be used for a movie and instead making it a tv show. Some plot ideas might be great but for a movie and not a tv show. I think the creators are just trying to create tv shows sometimes even though their original idea would better fit that of a movie.

I'm Father Dowling, this is Father Mulcahey, and that's Sister Christian.
Chi McBride deserves an Emmy right now!

dawsongirl 10-20-2008, 08:36 PM DSM has always looked ridiculous to me. Like a trashy version of 80s Nighttime soaps. Plus, I hate that title. Utterly craptastic.
It's a horrible title indeed. They're trying too hard to push their desired image. Once upon a time, I loved "Desperate Housewives" to death, but even then I loathed the title with a passion. Way too sensational. Simply naming the show after its setting or part of its setting is extremely effective (off the top of my head..."Peyton Place," "Dallas," "Knots Landing," "Flamingo Road," "Falcon Crest," "Beverly Hills 90210," "Melrose Place," even "The OC" and "One Tree Hill" have the right idea).
Personally, I cringe whenever any of the current shows are compared to the likes of "Dallas" and "Dynasty" (as in "the next" or "the *insert* of our generation" or "a modern version of"). There's a drastic difference. "Dallas" and "Dynasty" took themselves seriously and that's like 50% of the enjoyment there. DSM is a freaking caricature through and through, so to say that it's a modern version of the older shows is ridiculous. Blasphemy in the churches of David Jacobs, Aaron Spelling, and Lorimar Television, I say!

"Lincoln Heights" is in its third season and from what I hear, it's making very impressive ratings (in relation to previous seasons). I don't watch the show, but I'm sure it's safe for a while.

I kind of notice this too. With some shows, the concept is good, but it's like "can there really be a potentially long running series based on this?" Sometimes, the answer is definitely no.
Schmoopie 10-21-2008, 02:16 AM I've never seen "Pushing Daisies" but I want to watch at least one episode sometime. It looks kind of cute.

"Worst Week" is based on a British show (as are a lot of other new shows this year, probably due to the writer's strike), and most shows from the UK are only intended to run for 1 or 2 short "series" with a lot less episodes - heck the British version of "Eleventh Hour" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleventh_Hour_(TV_series)) only has FOUR episodes, and it was considered a "hit" !

Yeah, that's the show. It had a second season last fall and now it's back for a third. I like it, but for some reason, I can never keep up with any of ABC Family's original shows. I have the same problems with "Greek," "Kyle XY," and probably "Secret Life of the American Teenager" too. They space the seasons out way too much, and then they do the ridiculous thing where the split seasons in half and air them at different times. Hate that.

I agree, I really wasn't too happy to hear that Kyle XY isn't coming back until 2009 after the season ended several months ago. I'm sorry, but that's way too long a wait.

I know for a fact that the last week's episode pulled in just over 1 million viewers at 8pm, which is good, IMO, while Greek (which they always tend to favor over LH) pulled in just over 800,000 viewers. So obviously, Lincoln Heights isn't going anywhere. And keep in mind, this aired against tough competition - shows like Secret Life do better because it aired in the summer, when there was literally no competition against it.

Okay, good, I was thinking that I'd read some LH ratings info (ABC Family ratings info in general, actually), but I forgot where, so thanks for assuring me that I wasn't just making it up lol
You know, ABCF really does have a nice little stable of original programming. Being more inclined to dramedies that are more dramatic than comedic, I love the fact that their lineup of shows is sorta diverse, subject matter-wise. "Kyle XY" won't have similar plot lines to "Lincoln Heights." "Greek" wouldn't have had similar plot lines to "Wildfire." "Secret Life" wouldn't have had similar plot lines to "Beautiful People." They all have different styles and premises, so ABCF definitely gets some plusses from me in that department...which is more than I could say for the networks. Would it kill them to have variety in their schedules at all? Everything's so homogenized...
Jude The Obscure 10-21-2008, 08:42 PM ^Such as CBS, which could stand for "Crime procedural Broadcasting System"
dawsongirl 10-21-2008, 10:21 PM And ABC is the soapy-dramady channel, Fox is reality shlock, and NBC just sucks.
ITA with both of you lol
It's why I was truly excited for "Friday Night Lights." It was unlike anything on network television in many, many years, and while it was based on a movie, which was based on a book, which was based on real life, it was still a very original concept for a television series.
Even if it isn't an original idea, I'd still like to see concepts that haven't been around in a while. I love "Supernatural" for keeping alive the two-guys-traveling-the-country-and-going-on-adventures concept. Much of the hoopla around "Desperate Housewives" was that it was bringing back the concept of suburban-life-is-not-as-perfect-as-it-seems.
troopoleon8897 10-22-2008, 11:53 AM I really wish they made a new prime time soap that is actually good and focuses on people older than 21, I mean BH and MP were the last worth while ones... I just wished i lived during the Dallas run, and wish I started liking the show before Soapnet pulled Knot's Landing airings.... I also wish I could watch Falcon's Crest, two bad I was born right around when Soaps died
rodwayne 10-22-2008, 02:20 PM KNIGHTRIDER should be another show put on a very short lease. This is deffenany not your mother/father KNIGHTRIDER!Nothing wrong with the lead, but the love interest is "the usual suspect",plus too many side charaters.I thought that the theme of the show was suppose to be "One man can make a difference";yet, there's 1000 people to answer too!!!
