View Full Version : Why was Cybill canceled?
I remember watching Cybill when it was on. I was younger then. And barely remember it. I didnt watch it much because my dad said its not a good show for me. I think i remember it being very controviersal, like Ellen. Was it canceled becuase of ratings or for other reasons.

factsoflife 08-20-2001, 06:57 PM according to her Book CYBILL Disobediance, CYBILL was canceled after Cybill refused to sleep witha a CBS executive.

k, thanks all. Thats what I thought. Its a shame though. Cybill was very hilarious. I loved Christine Baranski and Cybill on the show. I wish it would have kept going. Another network should have picked it up or something. Why would CBS care what the show does, didnt Cybill boost CBS ratings. I mean if its helping the network, let the show run.
ok, thats all, thanks much
TV Guy 08-23-2001, 09:12 PM The ratings weren't very good when CBS moved the show to the old "Murphy Brown" slot Mondays at 9. CBS expects the shows that air there to be in the Top 20, and "Cybill ranked somewhere in the 30s or 40s that year, so it was cancelled. Believe me, if the ratings had been good, all the creative differences in the world wouldn't have kept that show off the air. Look at "Roseanne".
SitcomFan 12-06-2001, 05:56 PM i thought she won her emmy in 1995 and didnt the show end in 1998
Moondance 02-09-2002, 04:57 PM Yeah! The show did end in 1998!!!

Yep, yep, yep, you're right. What's shocking about its cancelation was that it was CBS's highest ranking show for women, second for young adults, and finished its final season under budget. With all of that success, a series would have to run longer! :happyface :happyface :happyface
Moondance 03-11-2002, 05:22 PM I wish that it would have run longer becuz I didn't like that whole
"To Be Continued..." thing at the end of the final episode! If they were gonna do that, wouldn't it make more sense to have an hour long finale?? Huh??? Is that much to ask?

Jordan 03-13-2002, 09:57 PM I know, I agree. I do not like the 'to be continued' thing, and niether did Cybill. She faught to get it to not be on, but was unsuccessful. :happyface :happyface :happyface

Well, I guess there's nothing that we can do about it. :(

Cybill Shepherd Says Her ’90s Sitcom Ended Because She Refused Les Moonves’ Advances (https://deadline.com/2018/12/cybill-shepherd-les-moonves-ended-her-1990s-sitcom-1202519485/)
If you look at the ratings (https://m.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Final-Ratings-for-97-98-TV-Season-3006101.php) of her show's last season (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6492449/Cybill-Shepherd-says-Les-Moonves-cancelled-sitcom-refused-sex-him.html) it was 50th ahead of The Nanny and Murphy Brown on the same network. Also quite a few CBS shows well below her's in that season that on this list were renewed.
favoriteshow 12-13-2018, 04:03 PM It's unfortunate.
Cybill didn't have a good working relationship in the end, with Lorre and Baranski either:

Otherwise, it would be great if she could be a guest star on 'The Good Fight' to re-unite the two (Cybill and Christine) onscreen.
One way to look at this and whether or not Cybill got "screwed by the network" (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ScrewedByTheNetwork/LiveActionTV) (probably not the best choice of words in relation to Les Moonves) is that it was canceled just 13 episodes short of 100 episodes, which was the magic number for syndication back in the day. Normally, studios would bend over backwards to get their shows to hit 100 even if the ratings were falling, especially if they were close, because those syndication deals were a huge payday for everyone involved.
You can of course, counter with the notion that Cybill was never really a huge ratings hit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybill#Ratings) (the highest that it ever got was #22 in its first season) to begin with. Also, CBS didn't really own the show (Carsey-Werner did) so they would not have benefited financially from syndication.
irehtman 11-05-2022, 04:18 PM But you all, not to be offensive at all, need to also notice that some info about cybill's negative adult role real-life in this show wasn't aired in television when this show was automatically cancelled too soon. So, her negative adult role real-life was saved and recycled into one of these "In The Hood Troublemaking" African-American sitcom called "The Parkers", TBH, IMO.
How come the '90s CBS sitcom "Cybill" with Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski had such a short run? (https://www.quora.com/How-come-the-90s-CBS-sitcom-Cybill-with-Cybill-Shepherd-and-Christine-Baranski-had-such-a-short-run/answer/Jon-Mixon-1)
Question: How come the '90s CBS sitcom "Cybill" (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031125247/http://www.jumptheshark.com/c/cybill.htm) with Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski had such a short run?
Because if we are all going to be honest while Cybill Shepherd has always been a darling of the critics, most people find her to be cold and off-putting as a performer. It’s why her film career never went anywhere and why despite decades in the business, other than her pairing with Bruce Willis on Moonlighting, she’s never become a major performer.
If you watch Cybill (https://web.archive.org/web/20140406114419/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3154462-cybill/?view=getnewpost), other characters are funny while Cybill herself is the straight man. That means that if you’re watching it, you find yourself waiting until someone cracks a joke rather than Shepherd’s setup/build up to that joke. That’s great when you have an exceptional cast. However Cybill (https://www.tellytalk.net/threads/cybill-tv-series.10939/) had Christine Baranski and Alan Rosenberg ahead of everyone else when it needed funnier performers or even a minority to make it appear to be less bland and less “monochromatic”. It’s basically Murphy Brown with fewer laughs which itself seems to have been a difficult task.
Frankly if they hadn’t invested so much money, if the Carsey/Werner production company didn’t have so much clout with the network, and had critics been harsher, the series (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/Cybill) probably would have been gone in its freshman or sophomore seasons. It was a tired (and tiring program). Shepherd really wasn’t an attraction, and frankly the stories weren’t particularly memorable. By the third season (https://jacksonupperco.com/2023/03/21/the-ten-best-cybill-episodes-of-season-three/), it wasn’t holding its ratings (https://www.tvtango.com/series/cybill/episodes) spot and the decision was made to pull the plug. The fact remains that it was a middling series and that no one wants to watch Cybill Shepherd on anything other than television episodes of programs where she’s not the star.
If you doubt me, here’s a sample:
