View Full Version : I saw the Spike commercial for UM!
I'm not joking. Last night, I was watching a rerun of CSI: NY on Spike, and later in that broadcast they showed a commerical for UM! The commercial showed (and mentioned) Dennis Farina and some photos from a few old segments, such as Kurt Cobain and Tupac Shakur.
Sometimes one has to watch a considerable amount of television just to see a commercial that you are anticipating. I watched Spike whenever possible in the hopes that I would see a commercial for UM. But when I finally did see the commercial, I wasn't as prepared as I thought I would be. The reality of it just hasn't completely sunk in yet.
Mystery Lover 09-22-2008, 01:30 PM That's awesome!!
Makes it more real that the show will be on before we know it!
22 days and counting!!!
YIPEEEEEE!
DALLASTEXAN!! 09-22-2008, 02:54 PM 22 days lol. I can't wait either. I hope I'm not over critical of the show because we all love the original so much. I'm not a spike guy so I will need to tune in to look for these commercials.

That's why you gotta get a DVR Kane! That way you can watch it and re-watch it then post it for all of us to see! ;)

Well, I would have to get myself an account, since I currently don't have one. But in the meantime, for those of you who watch Spike TV, please be on the lookout for those UM commericals. :)
Anyway, I saw another commerical last night. This one was different from the one I viewed the other night. This one featured a glimpse of the Henry Rollins interview and of an Elvis segment (specifically, the 1997 segment which explored whether or not Elvis Presley committed suicide).
colt45allstar 09-23-2008, 05:34 PM Just saw one myself... likely the 2nd one you watched.
I do have a DVR and I paused it and am going to show my little brother (who also happens to be one of my roommates) the commercial when he gets home shortly.. that's how excited it made me
It started with Elvis and from there showed glimpses of The Kurt Cobain segment, the Rollins interview, a Big Foot clip and a UFO mention.
It also had what I assume will be the new theme music in the back ground... while it's definitely not the classic theme we all know and love, this new music sounds like it has potential. The start of the commercial even sounded a little bit like a 'retooled' version of the classic theme for a brief moment.
Can't wait!
justins5256 09-23-2008, 08:06 PM Let's see...Tupac, Kurt Cobain, Elvis and a UFO sighting.
Am I the only one anticipating this incarnation is going to suck?
colt45allstar 09-23-2008, 09:28 PM I bet there will be plenty of the older classic segments as well... at least I hope so.

Honestly, my hopes are not high for this but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised.

although UM is the show that just wouldn't die, it's gotten worse with every incarnation, which makes me think the new UM is going to be pretty awful. There's hardly any current shows that I can stand to watch.
But on the good side, it's going to reach a somewhat different audience, so there's hope some of these cases can get solved.

Yup, that was one of the commercials I saw. That would definitely be the second one. I waited to see if you or anyone who had seen that segment would acknowledge it along with any of the details that I didn't mention, including the clip of Big Foot. This helped confirm that you saw the same commercial that I had seen.
browneyes106 09-25-2008, 12:17 AM I keep missing the commercials since they should a glimpse from the Henry Rollins interview maybe they the new UM will do a new segment on the West Memphis Three. Henry and others are still looking into the case. But recently the West Memphis Three were denied a new trial.
PrettyinPink55 09-25-2008, 12:20 AM I don't think it's quite hit me yet, and probably won't until October 13th!!!! I can't wait!!!
I hope they don't just show the "popular cases," (Big Foot, Kurt Cobain, UFOs) and give equal attention to all of them...like the more obscure crime cases.
LiveByTheSea 09-25-2008, 01:59 AM I haven't seen the commercial on Spike but I hope the new UM doesn't tank.
smashv2 09-26-2008, 12:49 AM I haven't seen the commercial on Spike but I hope the new UM doesn't tank. I just hope the atmosphere is true to the original show.

:eyes: Kurt Cobain :loveya:
LOL
It's not going to suck!
LaToyaBoy 09-27-2008, 11:02 PM Christ....I cant even remember the last time I actually saw REAL tv. Hell I cant even remember the last time I saw myself sit infront of a tv! :(
Its mostly me and my labtop or me and "old faithful" my iPod.
Anyways, I hope the new series is a success...in multiple ways. UM is a timeless show, I grew up with it and I hope Spike TV does it justice.
Allierain 09-30-2008, 10:23 AM I just hope the atmosphere is true to the original show.
Agreed. If I can watch the show in the dark of night and not be freaked out...FAIL.
EWfilm 10-02-2008, 12:24 AM Hello everyone. First time poster, life-long fan of Unsolved. I think I would agree with everyone here that, at first, the proposal of a new show sounds like a fantastic idea considering Unsolved no longer airs here in the states. But, considering Hollywood's view of remakes and reincarnations in general, I would suggest we all should proceed with caution.
I'm a huge fan of the Twilight Zone, as well. Remember when they brought the show back on UPN promising to stay "true to the original material" with a new "modern twist"? Well that, like most, turned out to be complete garbage. This goes for a long list of recent shows and films. Hollywood seems to dictate now that things must continue moving at a quick pace or they'll loose the attention of their audience. And considering the new Unsolved Mysteries is set release on Spike TV, I would suspect that this also is going to be fashioned for the audience with short attention spans. If they do this, it's really going to hurt the show in my opinion.
I hope this is not the case. I think everyone will agree, what made Unsolved Mysteries so great, especially in it's early years, was the moody atmosphere of each segment. It wasn't just Stack's masterful narration, but the way the filmmaker's went about the production. There's something about film that you can't seem to capture on video, which was apparent from UM's later seasons. I would hope the team working on the new series hasn't forgotten this and will treat the production with that subtle touch of eeriness that made the original series classic.
I haven't had the chance to see the promo on Spike. Did anyone catch the original theme in the commercial? Let's hope they don't forget that, too!

I remember when the 2002 version of The Twilight Zone was on, although I never saw it. However, it didn't surprise me that it was canceled within a year. Besides, a redo of TZ had already done - in 1985. The '80s version of that show was a modest hit, lasting 3 seasons (two on CBS and one in first-fun syndication).
If a certain TV show has to be revived, it should be established as a revival. There have been some TV shows whose revivals failed because they looked more like remakes than revivals (one example is the short-lived revival of The Joker's Wild in 1990). But when Family Feud (for example) was revived in 1988, it was clearly shown as a revival instead of as a remake; aside from the fact that there was a new host, there were few differences between the second run of FF and its original run.
Having said that, if the UM revival is to be successful, it needs be shown for what it is: a revival, not a remake.
mphs95 10-02-2008, 10:52 AM If anyone finds the nuUM commerical and can upload it to the site with no name, I would love to see it!

The new commercial certainly made it seem like a remake. I'm going into this with a certain cynicism, I just know Spike is going to ruin it
unsolvedmysteriesfan 10-02-2008, 04:01 PM Yeah, I'm disappointed. Not shocked. All my other favorite shows are gone now too , like "The FBI Files" and "The New Detectives", both canceled.

I thought the 80's Twilight Zone was done wonderfully and kept true to Rod Serling's style of storytelling. Although, that was back when they weren't trying to cram a thousand shots into 3 minutes of footage. What they don't realize is a fast-pace doesn't work well with a show like this. Unsolved Mysteries needs to be treated in a more subtle fashion, depending on the time allowed and the segment content. I'm still holding out hope that they won't choose this route and will keep with the original approach. One thing's for sure though, we probably won't ever see the original shows back in syndication.
The original Twilight Zone is one of my all-time favorites and I watched the new one when it came on. There were a few good episodes but it was another case of not being able to redo a classic. Two problems I had in particular were that they often dwelled on negative endings. There were plenty of dark endings on the original TZ and bad things sometimes happened to good people. But the show was also about good people getting second chances and the new TZ seemed to forget that. Also, instead of doing one twist, the show often did two. A twist on a twist can be good sometimes but the new TZ relied on this too much as well.
This new UM seems to be a remake but a remakes that utilizes the old footage.

In other words, what works for somes TV shows doesn't work for others.
