So...apparently...while we are still waiting for the rest of "Facts of Life" and "Diff'rent Strokes" to come out on DVD...Sony is releasing the complete beginning season of "Seinfeld"!!! I don't know about anyone else, but MAN AM I PEEVED!!! Such a CRAP show being treated like the greatest show on the planet while quality shows like "Facts of Life" and "Diff'rent Strokes" basically get treated like ****!! This is so messed up!!

I agree with you completely. I want "The Division" to be released as well but it is getting to the point where this is really ridiculous having to wait this long. It is literally coming up on two years since the last season release and it makes me wanna cry. I WANT MY FACTS OF LIFE ALREADY! LORD HAVE MERCY THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

hasn't seinfeld been out on dvd for a while? i know how you feel. i keep seeing commercials for newer shows that are coming out on dvd and it's annoying. these shows were just on tv last year or they're still running. frustrating. and i would loooove to have the division on dvd, but that is not going to happen. strong medicine was on dvd for the first season, but disappeared after that.

Seinfield? i thought they had the entire series on DVD. they're starting over again? i can't stand that show (and i've never seen it. lol)
my only guess is poor sales of Strong Medicine, FOL and The Division is the reason Sony isn't putting any more out (?) does anybody know how many units were sold of each?
but Megan is right. a show that's currently on TV gets DVD releases but not classics? what?

Geez, lots of Seinfeld haters here! Oh well, to each his own, I guess...
As far as Seinfeld relasing new box sets, that I had no idea about. They have the entire series in individual box sets and the massive complete series set. I don't have a clue what they could add that could make them better!
That makes no sense, really. Especially since Season 1 is only five episodes long!

I have to add to the Seinfeld comments. I agree it is a pretty dumb show. I think it's fine that it's on dvd but it's done now. Why go back and start on it again? I mean, everytime they release a new set, doesn't that add to their production and distribution fees. Why use their funds to support a show that is already out on the market? Give the tv fans something new.

It's just beyond frustrating that they have already remastered Season 4 and won't release it. We should easily be into the "Over Our Heads" years by now. I think that if Sony spends any time on a classic tv series until completion now that both Seinfeld and Jeannie are done, it should be Facts.

I totally agree with you Pfeifferobsessed in saying that I think Seinfeld is one of the dumbest shows ever and ive never even really seen it before. I just want Facts for crying out loud. I dont understand what they are waiting for. they could be making millions on this release and as for the Division, I am staying optimistic about it. It very well might be released in the future. also the other day I went on tvshowsondvd.com and looked @ what all was being released in the next few months and i was disgusted that all of these shows that I HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF EVER ARE BEING RELEASED AND PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF THESE BUT YET SONY IS SO IGNORANT AND STONED THAT THEY CAN'T JUST QUIT PLAYING AROUND AND RELEASE FACTS. Wait a minute, Sony actually remastered Season 4? That means they got it ready to be put out on DVD right, like picturewise and stuff? (correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's what it means) When did they do that and why would they just not release it if they remastered it? WTF are they doing, keeping it in a vault or something? We are well into Season 4 on Comcast OnDemand. Those are remastered episodes. They did the same thing with "Square Pegs". All episodes were remastered for a year or so before they actually made it onto dvd. I thought that meant they were mastered to the point they were going to be if they were on OnDemand. I could be wrong.

Either way, I WANT SEASON 4!!!!!!

I think we will see Season 4 out on dvd but I think strong sales will drive further releases. So I, for one, will be buying multiple copies as gifts and keep 2 for myself. I really want to get to the Edna's Edibles years. All this waiting for Season 4 has definitely been a bummer.

It wouldn't hurt to e-mail Sony again too. I sent them an e-mail just the other day. Here's their e-mail address: consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com

I called the Sony number and this is what they told me:

I asked about the releases that they do. They told me that it does take a long time for a season to make its sales back to them. That's why you see continued releases a year or two years down the road. They also said that if one season didn't sell well, why put a lot of production into the remaining seasons?

Sadly, this show and others like "The Facts of Life" and "All in the Family" do not have any future release at this time. So what we have to do is to get more people to buy the seasons that are already out for them to break even or make sales good enough to release more seasons.

This is why they release current shows on DVD because they are sure to sell and people who missed the season on TV will be sure to buy them. This pushes promotion for these shows on the networks that air them. But for past or classic shows, they will not invest in them until they see some decent returns for ths stuff that is already out there. They claim that their classic shows do NOT sell as well as the current ones so they don't bother in continued releases. I said "so basically crap like Seinfeld and all that can get re-released like crazy and stuff", and they said "Yes because it's a popular title and people still buy the releases. We're not going to keep putting out seasons on what we THINK might make money because that would constitute a LOSS for us".

So SONY is actually a REACTIVE company with their classic stuff and highly PROACTIVE with their current stuff. They have to sell more than a few thousand copies on the seasons (50,000 to be exact) of a show they do have in order to release more seasons. So people, BUY MORE CLASSIC SHOWS AND LESS CURRENT SHOWS. That'll teach them.

And it will show them that we do care as much about the classic shows as we do the current shows.

Robert 13
09-18-2008, 12:08 PM
Well, that makes sense but it doesn't make me feel any better about seeing future seasons of my favorite classics on dvd. I don't have ANY current shows in my collection. I have purchased all seasons of Facts, All in the Family, What's Happening Now!! and Hazel that are available. It seems hopeless. I wish there was a way for them to make these shows available to us which didn't constitute a loss and we could still buy them on dvd.

When it takes an outside company like Shout! to cater to classic TV fans, that says a lot. Shout! is getting ready to release Father Knows Best season2 and from listening to fan requests, made sure all the episodes are unedited. Sony just doesn't care and the bottom line of money being the issue--well, you can't sell, what you don't promote and put out!!!!

Let us know if you get a response. Even though the episodes are on OnDemand for Season 4, I'm sure there are people out there who don't have access to that service. Plus, I would like a nice package for Season 4 with coverart and episode synopsis. Plus The Facts Of Life Goes To Paris. This could be a big seller if they package it properly. Guys, keep e-mailing Sony because they have been releasing a chronological set of The 3 Stooges based on fan requests. The labels on these dvds even state "Fan-Requested". So keep sending those e-mails. There has to be a way to get our "demand" across to Sony. I think if we keep up the e-mails, we can do it. And demand no less than a "Complete Series" release. :)

why is there so much Seinfeld bashing? I agree that them releasing season 1 on its own when there's FOL and so many other shows to play catch-up with is a dumb move, but I think it's ignorant to just bash another show to look better.

I dunno. I was just a little turned off by having my favorite show being bashed when I think Roseanne is an amazing series (FOL does make my top five though).

To me, Full House represented everything about TV that Seinfeld was needed to come and wash away. I know I feel like a hypocrite because I love Facts Of Life, but to me, FH was just so over the top with it's cutesiness and mushiness and it's almost unwatchable with adult eyes. I loved it when I was ten though, but so much of it is ripe for parody with the way it'd cue the cheesy music during the heart talks IMO. I know the same can be argued for FOL, but I honestly prefer the post-Eastland years better when the show is more comedy and less "very special episode" (season 3 is my least watched season for this reason... I have most of 4-9 on bootleg). The Edna's Edibles seasons were incredible IMO.

OTOH, Roseanne may have been loud and abrasive but it's an amazing nine year ride with characters that you love, hate and everything in between. If you've ever lived in the midwest, you know these characters. I personally like the middle years best when Becky and Darlene are older, but I think it's a great show from beginning to end, and yes I even like the last season because I understand where Roseanne was trying to do to the series. I can see where a lot of people might be turned off to the show, namely men since it was such a feminist show, but even if you dislike the show, there are far worse.

I think a big problem is the fact that FOL is so rare to find on TV these days. One of my best friends is a few years younger than me (he was born in 1984 but mostly missed out on the 80's and early 90's television) and he's gotten into a lot of shows I like. He got into Golden Girls on Lifetime and Roseanne on Nick At Nite (and he also got into Fresh Prince but I don't like that show), yet he's never seen FOL and has no desire to check a DVD of it out because he's never seen the show. I know that if it aired somewhere on TV, he'd probably like the show, but he's missing out on it, whereas he came into Roseanne and Golden Girls in recent years on syndication and fell in love with those shows and bought the DVD. The difference? Roseanne and Golden Girls are still shown in syndication and reruns so it's easier for new fans to be attracted to it. I honestly think FOL DVD sales would boost if it came to TV Land or something so people can actually see the series again.

I am content with 10-12 year old USA Network tapings converted to DVD, but I would love to have the real thing, especially since I don't think the best seasons are out yet.

I agree that part of the problem is that Facts is not on very many channels. Nick at Nite (which is where I discovered Facts) used to be such a great channel because it had all the good shows on like Facts and Family Ties(which I also love) and Three's Company(another wonderful show and a fave of mine). Now they put stupid, more recent shows on there and i hate it. I want all the oldies. The GOOD shows that truly are funny and loved by everyone. Instead they replace the good ol shows with garbage.

Wow. I didn't realize my comment was going to be that big of a deal. I just found it interesting/humorous that someone is a big enough fan of Roseanne that they find it to be better than Seinfeld...one of the most groundbreaking shows of our generation (and I say that as a person who is not really much of a Seinfeld fan).

MusicJunkie, if you got your panties in a bunch over my sarcasm, I do apologize. No harm intended. Like I said, there's plenty of stuff that I like that I'm sure is crap to most people.

For what it's worth, I'll pipe in and agree with what everyone else is saying about N@N and TV Land. Just pitiful these days. And I couldn't agree more about George Lopez. How is a show that's barely six years old considered classic television?

I'd even rather see more Roseanne on N@N than shows like George Lopez. ;)

well, Roseanne is considered a pretty groundbreaking series is its own right as well. And Entertainment Weekly even put Roseanne over Seinfeld (with Seinfeld at #2) as the greatest sitcom of the 90's. I love Seinfeld also, but I always connected a little more with the characters of Roseanne being in the midwest. Seinfeld is more groundbreaking, but I do think Roseanne did carve out its own niche and did a lot of things that were unheard of before hand.... Hell, the fact that it starred two overweight actors (even tho Roseanne's slimmed down a lot) was quite groundbreaking considering the late 1980's were an even more superficial decade than the 2000's.

Regarding Seinfeld, I agree and am just as frustrated as everyone else (okay, I'm not AS frustrated considering I do have about 130 season 4-9 episodes to tide me over) but didn't see the need to start "Seinfeld is crap" comments over the frustration with Sony. I agree that it's very annoying that Sony goes back and releases Seinfeld season 1 (which was originally bundled with season 2, and is now in a complete series box set) when they have shows like FOL and others to finish, but I'm not going to say "Seinfeld sucks" like a few others did. Because Seinfeld doesn't suck :)

Sorry if I took your comments the wrong way, I usually just think personal preference is just that. We all like things others don't, that's what makes us unique, lol.

Nick should be airing shows like FOL, Diff'rent Strokes, Gimme A Break, Three's Company, Alice and others from the 80's and before. Even something like Roseanne (which turns 20 on October 18th) is still a few years away from truly becoming a N@N type show. I blame it on viewer ADD that they want to watch what they saw last week instead of something that goes back a bit, and stupid N@N chooses quantity over quality.
