Actually, we never did get a definitive answer as to whether Carol was widowed or divorced.

As for Mike, we know he was widowed, the real mystery is who is in the picture that they show in pilot as a picture of the boys' mother. There have been many theories as to who the mystery woman is but nothing concrete.

Mike was a widower, according to the trivia I have read. To my knowledge I don't ever recall anyone talking about her.
