I saw that a reference to the internet was made in a 1997 ep of Family Matters and was wondering was there any reference before 1996? I know I didn't discover the internet until 1996 so I thought maybe it started being mentioned on Sitcoms after 1997.

I wanna say around 1994 or 1995 at the least.I remember my first internet connection being AOL & we had it connected around 94 or 95. I believe on The Cosby Show, Denise was using a Laptop when she was writing a paper for school. I think it was in the 7th season because she didn't have her dreads anymore, so that was around 90/91

He mentioned the word modem and that he had been chatting with people over the computer. If he didn't have the internet then how in the world do you think he was talking to people on the computer??? Any normal person would know that he was on the internet. And plus he mentions all of this in like the first 60 secs of the show.

There was one episode on Empty Nest that aired in the fall on 1992 where a minor character was talking about how she could not into her "electronic mail" on her computer. Could this have been a non-internet way of accessing her e-mail?

That sounds like a local area network, or a LAN. Back as far as 1991 at Miami University (the one in Ohio, not Florida) I remember being able to send e-mail to anyone at college at not just Oxford, but also the Hamilton and Middletown campuses, through a college account (something like @miamiu.miavx1.com with about 20 letters and three dots before the "at" sign). A roommate of mine in 1992 accessed the Internet (or what was it back then) to play some online games; I remember seeing a counter at the top right of the screen increase two cents per minute--he always told me "I'm on the phone!" when playing; the truth was, it took over the telephone line for our room. I never experimented with that since I did not have my own computer and had to go to the lab (which wasn't always open) to use it. When 1994 rolled around I was able to communicate with my brother in Kansas at his college e-mail account, which I thought was really cool and got me more interested in e-mail.

Local area network could be what they were using. That's very possible. Also, the producers might have consulted with experts on where computers might be headed in the future. A lot of the show was fantasy, but that part of it seemed pretty acurate to how things are today. I remember Gene Roddenberry used to say that for the original Star Trek he would sometimes consult with NASA about technology.

My local station WB was airing them late night around 2:30am in the morning. NAN did begin to air the first five and six episodes after Richie's run and then went back to the beginning. When TV Land began airing it, they went through the entire show. Now that I think about it, The Jeffersons aired up to season eight then started again at season one. NAN later aired all the eps.

And either she was in the hospital or he was (one of them was in a hospital bed, I dont remember which) and she hooked her computer up to a phone line, and was able to communicate with another computer, finding records.

The absolute earliest internet connection I can recall was called Prodigy and that would be someplace in the early 90's but no earlier than 1993 or 1994.

The internet really began exploding into popularity in the mid-to-late 90's, think 1997-1999. By 2000/2001 it was really a whole new thing.

I don't think I started using the internet until I was about 19 or 20. But I remember using a computer as early as 4th 5th grade. We played Oregon trail on it at school. Back to the topic at hand. I am not sure when I remember seeing a computer on a tv show. Probably married with children.
