**Interior of Captain Kate McCafferty's Office**

K: Well, Rachel, it looks like you would be a great help with the clerical stuff around here.

KAte McCafferty took off her glasses and leaned across the desk, smiling at the girl sitting across from her. Rachel was 21, about 5'3", with shoulder-length auburn hair. She was nicely dressed and only had a subtle hint of makeup on. She didn't really need it, though, because Rachel was quite attractive, and her smile was her best asset.

K: So, Rachel, you're hired. When can you start?

R: Right away. (Rachel smiled) Actually, that's preferred.

K: Well then, why don't I introduce you to some of my inspectors.

Kate got up from her desk and crossed over to her door, opening it. Rachel followed, taking everything in. Kate first walked over to CD and Angela.

K: Rachel, this are inspectors CD Delorenzo and Angela Reide.

Rachel extended her hand to both of the inspectors, taking each of them in. 'CD's tough" she thought, 'And Angela... hmm.. I have no clue.'

R: Nice to meet you.

K: Rachel is going to be doing some clerical work for us.

CD: Thank god. I was getting a little tired of the mess. (CD cracked a smile.)

A: Nice to meet you too, Rachel. Welcome aboard. (Angela smiled warmly then looked back to what she was doing.)

Kate walked over towards Magda's desk and tapped Magda on the shoulder.

M: Hey cap. What's up?

K: Magda, I'd like you to meet our new clerical support, Rachel.

M: Hey Rachel. (Magda smiled) Having fun yet?

Rachel looked at Magda and knew she would enjoy working with her. She was very sensible and much more relaxed than the other two inspectors.

R: Of course. (Rachel beamed)

Magda laughed and smiled back.

M: Good choice cap. She's got spunk.

K: Oh yeah. (Kate smiled, then realizing someone was missing, frowned a little.) Where's Jinny?

M: Bathroom.

Jinny walked in.

J: Nope, here.

Jinny sat down at her desk and looked through the paper work piled on her desk.

K: Uh.. Jinny, I'd like you to meet Rachel. She's going to be doing some clerical work.

J: Hey Rach. Mind if I call you Rach? Anyways, welcome. (Jinny smiled and added with sarcasm) You'll LOVE it here.

Rachel laughed as the Captain gave Jinny a glare.

R: I already do.

M: See, cap, I told ya... spunk.

Captain rolled her eyes and pointed to Jinny and Magda.

K: You're working with them today. They have a whole lot of things for you to do. Come see me if you have any questions.

With that, Captain Kate McCafferty walked back to her office and shut the door behind her. Jinny looked over at the closed door and made a face.

J: I can't say anything without her getting on my case.

M: Yeah, well, that's the cap for you. Hey.. I'll be right back. (Magda gets up and leaves through the division doors.)

J: So Rach, how old are you?

R: 21. Thank god. (Rachel smiled and sat down in an empty chair next to Jinny.)

J: Yes... the wonderful age we all aspire to get to... and stay at.

R: Yeah. So... how long have you been a cop?

J: 7 years... and counting, if she (pointing to captian's office) doesn't do anything about that.

R: Why would she?

J: She doesn't like me, honestly. I mean, I joke, but she really doesn't.

R: Well, I don't see why anyone wouldn't like you. (Rachel blushed and figeted in her seat.)

J: Thanks.

Jinny looked up and noticed Rachel acting a little weird.

J: You okay?

R: Yeah, I'm fine. Just... nevermind.

J: Okaay..

Magda walked back in and sat at her desk, sighing.

M: You ladies ready for some exicting paper-work? (Magda smiled and handed Jinny a stack of papers.)

J: (groaning) I really HATE this. (She turned to Rachel) See, the cap DOES hate me. (Jinny walked away towards the coffee machine.) Be back.

Rachel studied Jinny as she walked way and then turned to Magda, who was carefully studying the papers on her desk.

R: Magda, um... can I ask you a question?

M: Sure. (Magda looked up from her desk and right at Rachel).

R: Jinny. Is she.. well... I mean... is Jinny.... does she... well...

Magda looked at Rachel quizzically, wondering what the girl was trying to ask her, and then she got her answer.

R: ...like girls?

Magda just stared in shock at Rachel and didn't answer her. She couldn't. She was almost frozen to the spot. Jinny walked back over before Magda could even start to regain her composure.

J: Ok... what did I miss? (Jinny slid back down in her chair and looked from Magda to Rachel expecting and answer.

M: (quickly) Nothing.

J: Uh huh.. right. (Jinny fished through her papers and came out with a stack marked "completed.") Here ya go, Rach, you know how to file?

Rachel sat there looking like a deer in headlights, when Jinny's voice snapped her back to reality. Blushing, she took the papers from Jinny, and ran off to the filing room without saying a word.

**about 3 hours later**

Jinny stared at Magda waiting for a response. All morning Magda had been acting strange, and Rachel had been acting stranger. Now Magda refused to tell Jinny what was wrong, no matter how much she insisted.

J: Magda... what is WRONG?! I've asked you about a dozen times this morning and you always say nothing, but then you act even stranger! (Jinny pauses, getting mad) What did I do?!

It was really hard for her to think, but Magda needed to. What Rachel had asked her about Jinny this morning was still bothering her, and she didn't want to upset Jin with anything.

M: Jin, I'll... I'll tell you later. Promise, okay?

'At least that's a start' Jinny thought, as Rachel walked back to her desk, ready for some more papers.

J: (sighing) Ok, Mag. (Jinny looked at Rachel.) Rach, I don't have anything else done. You're too fast. (Jinny cracked a smile and raised her eyebrows, motioning for Rachel to sit down.) Take a break... none of us work this hard.

M: Speak for yourself. (Magda smiled) Okay guys, I'm off to meet Gabriel for lunch. (pause) This should be interesting.

J: Mag, relax. It's cute.

M: Cute?! He left me when I was pregnant, remember?

J: I was just saying that it was cute that he wanted to see you, geez! Don't have a heart attack!

M: Don't worry Jin, I already had one this morning (glances at Rachel) I don't need another one.

Magda walked out the door to the division as Jinny stared after her wondering what she meant by that last comment when she remembered that Rachel was still sitting there waiting for work.

J: (to herself) Work... work. No, screw work. (to Rachel) Hey.. wanna grab a bite to eat? I'm starving!

Rachel looked at Jinny and her heart skipped a little. Had Jinny just asked her out to lunch? 'Wait girl,' she thought 'People go out to lunch at work all the time.' Rachel sighed and shrugged her shoulders.

R: Sure. Where to?

J: There's this great deli right down the street. We can walk there.

Grabbing her coat, Jinny started for the door to the division, while Rachel followed her. 'I'm gonna find out what's going on... even before Mag tells me' she thought as they exited the building.

***At the Deli***

Rachel and Jinny sat across from one another at the outside deli waiting for their food to arrive.

R: So, Jinny, tell me about... um.. yourself.

J: Not much to tell. I'm a cop, but you know that. I have two brothers and a dad who are also cops. Mag is my best friend. That's.. about it.

R: No boyfriend? Husband?

Jinny laughed and shook her head.

J: Nope. Neither.

R: So, you're single, then?

Jinny gave Rachel a quizzical look.

J: That's what I just said.

R: Right. (Rachel fiddled with her hands.) WERE you in a relationship.

Jinny felt uncomfortable. She had just broken up with Teddy, and she didn't want to get into the details of it with this girl she hardly even knew.

J: Yeah.. I just broke up with someone. (Jinny looked down and avoided Rachel's eyes, hoping that would deter her from asking any more questions.)

R: Oh, so, what happened?

J: We just... broke up... end of story.

R: I'm sorry.

J: Don't be. These things happen.

Rachel didn't know what to do. She folded and unfolded her hands. She wished that Magda had answered her question earlier, and she also wished she knew why she was so attracted to Jinny almost instantly. Usually it took weeks to get this far.

R: Well, whoever they were... they were stupid for breaking up with you. You're great really.

Jinny looked at Rachel and something suddenly seemed strange. She didn't know what it was yet, but she definitely felt awkward around this girl.

J: Uh... thanks.

R: Don't thank me, I'm serious. I think anyone would be crazy not to go out with you. I mean... I would, geez.

'Oh my god' Jinny thought as it finally hit her. This was what seemed off-kilter. Rachel liked her? Jinny looked down at the table and then back up at Rachel who seemed to be regretting what she had just said.

J: Rachel?

R: Yeah?

J: I.. um... well, I don't know if this is what you were saying but... (pause) I don't like girls.

Rachel felt as if she'd been slapped in the face. 'I can't believe it. I can't believe I even said something.' she thought as tears started to well up in her eyes.

R: No, I wasn't... no... (Rachel put her hand up to her eyes hoping that Jinny wouldn't see the tears.)

Not prepared for Rachel to start to cry, Jinny was in a panic. She didn't know what to do, and therefore stayed silent, staring at somewhere just past Rachel.

Waitress: Food's here, ladies!!

J: Uh.. thanks... (Jinny glanced at her sandwich as it was lowered in front of her.)

R: Jinny?

J: (mouth full) Yeah?

R: Forget I said anything, ok? (Rachel tried to smile.)

J: Sure. (Jinny's thoughts raced as she methodically ate her food.)

**At the divison, after lunch**

When Magda walked in, she could already sense that something was wrong. Jinny didn't look up when she walked in and was completely silent until Magda said hi to her. Rachel, on the other hand, looked like a zombie if she ever saw one.

M: Hey Jin.

J: Hey.

M: So... what's up?

Jinny didn't want to talk to Magda. She didn't want to talk to anybody. All she wanted to do was hear back from Casey... because HE was one person she WOULD talk to.

J: Nothin.

The phone rang and Jinny picked it up. Rachel walked over to Magda and handed her some more papers. Magda groaned and looked at Jinny.

J: Exstead. (pause) Casey.. yeah... I wanted to talk to you. (pause) Yes. (pause) 5? Hold on. (Jinny covers the mouthpiece) Hey Mag, mind if I get out of here a little early? I gotta go talk to Casey.

M: Sure Jin, we're not on a case, it's cool.

J: Thanks. (Jinny uncovers the mouthpiece.) Casey? Five is good. (pause) Alright.. see ya then. (Jinny hangs up the phone and turns her attention back to the file she was workign on.)

M: Problems with Casey?

J: (Angrily) No.

Magda, taken aback, sat silently. She sighed to herself and wondered what was going on. Then she remembered what Rachel had asked her this morning and wondered if that had anything to do with it.

**Divison 4:50pm**

The day had been the same since after lunch, with Jinny snapping at people, and Rachel walking around in a daze. Magda looked at her watch for the fifth time in five minutes. The day was certainly dragging.

J: Ok Mag, I'm outta here. Gotta go meet Casey.

M: Ok... have fun!

J:...Yeah....

Jinny grabbed her coat and walked towards the door.

CD: Hey Jinny! Don't forget... we're all meeting at Anchorside at 10 tonight!

J: Do I ever forget? (Jinny walked out the door absentmindedly)

Rachel came over to Magda's desk and stood there, waiting for more papers to file. She looked around the Division. Everything was such a mess. She couldn't believe that she had said anything to Jinny at all.

R: Hey Mag... who's Casey?

M: Jinny's brother.

R: Oh.

Magda could sense that whatever was going on was really bothering Rachel now, so she decided to broach the subject from this morning.

M: Rachel... we need to talk.

R: There's no need... I already know the answer to the question I asked you this morning.

M: (shocked) You just went and asked her?

R: (angrily) NO! (more calm now) I mean... sorta. It's just. (Rachel starts to cry and puts her hands up to wipe away the tears.) Don't worry about me. (She grins a little.) I cry about everything.

M: Okay... hey, it's 5, you're done for the day, aren't you?

R: Yeah... I'll see you tomorrow I guess. Bye everyone! See you tomorrow!

CD was over by the coffee machine when she heard the new girl, Rachel, she thought her name was, say goodbye.

CD: Hey... why don't you join us at anchorside tonight? You're over 21, aren't you?

R: I am 21. But... I don't think...

A: (interupting) Oh, come on, it's always fun! Besides, me and CD didn't get to hardly talk to you today.

Rachel looked at Magda who smiled back at her, encouragingly.

R: Ok. At 10, right?

CD: Yeah

Magda got up and stood next to Rachel.

M: Here, I'll walk you to your car.

When they were outside Magda turned to Rachel with sympathy in her eyes. She couldn't even imagine what the girl was going through. It was tough enough when you were 21 to find a decent man.

M: Rachel, it'll be ok. Jinny will be fine with it, ok?

R: She didn't seem that way today. (pause) I'm SO stupid... I shouldn't have said anything. I'm just too... impulsive.

M: (laughing) Hmmm... sounds familar.

R: What's that supposed to mean?

M: Jinny is too. Hey.. come to Anchorside tonight. By then Jinny will be ok with it... I'm sure.

R: Ok Magda. See you then.

Rachel got into her car and drove away, leaving Magda standing in the parking lot. 'I hope I'm right about Jinny' Magda thought as she made her way back to the building.

**Park Bench**

Casey sat on a bench waiting for his sister. It was rare that Jinny would want to talk to him. It was usually the other way around. Looking up, he saw her dark hair coming towards him and he stood up to greet her.

C: Hey stranger.

Jinny smiled. Casey always made her feel loved. After hugging him, she sat down on the bench and ran her fingers through her hair.

C: So what's up? (sits)

J: Well... I... have a problem.

Casey got a concerned look in his eyes and scooted closer to Jinny.

J: Her name is Rachel. (pause) And before I tell you this, remember that I really do feel like a creep right now, but... well... here goes.... This morning this clerical girl, Rachel, came to work for us and since me and Mag were on desk detail, she got to work with us. (pause) Anyway, when Mag went out to lunch me and Rachel went out to lunch. It was at this point when I found out Rachel likes me. Get what I mean?

Jinny finally looked up into her brother's eyes. She felt awful for letting this get to her. Being open-minded all her life, she didn't even understand why it would matter this time.

C: So... she likes you? And?? (Realization hit Casey and he frowned) You're having a problem with it?

Jinny saw the look of hurt in her brother's eyes. This had nothing to do with him, but in essence she supposed it did.

J: Yeah. I mean... I don't understand why I am, though.

Casey struggled with his inner feelings and his sense of reason. Most likely, Jinny had never encountered someone of the same sex liking her before and so it was completely new territory. But Jinny was always so open-minded about this sort of thing.

C: Well... I... don't know what to tell you, Jin, except don't stop talking to her and well... you're comfortable with your sexuality enough to know where you stand, so... it'll be ok.

Jinny listened to her brother and her head was swimming. She didn't know where she stood, that was the whole problem.

okie... i'm obviously having brainstorms cause i never write this fast... here's more:

**Anchorside 10:06pm**

Rachel walked into the Anchorside bar and glanced around, looking for the inspectors. She spotted three of them sitting at a table across the restaurant. Wondering where Jinny was, she made her way to Magda and the others. Then she saw Jinny. Or rather... bumped into Jinny.

J: Watch it!

Jinny looked up, annoyed that someone had bumped her with a drink. When she saw who it was, she froze.

J: Oh, Rachel, I'm sorry.. didn't mean to yell...

R: That's ok, I should've watched where I was going.

Quickly, looking away from Jinny, Rachel made her way to the table with everyone else, and smiled in greeting. Jinny followed right behind her, wondering what Rachel was doing there.

M: Hey Rach! Welcome!

R: Hey. Thanks.

CD: Whatcha drinking?

R: Oh.. Parrot Bay and Coke.

J: Coming right up...

Jinny walked back over to the bar as Rachel sat down in an empty chair.

A: I wonder why Jinny has this need to get everyone's drinks for them?

CD: (laughing) You know her true calling was to be a bartender.

Everyone at the table laughed except for Rachel, who just cracked a little smile.

CD: Rachel, what's wrong? No humor tonight?

R: Oh.. um... no. I'm a funny person, really.

M: THAT was an interesting statement. Let's hear some funny.

Rachel smiled big and shook her head. These girls were amazingly accepting, and that's what she needed right now. Regardless of Jinny, she was going to have fun tonight.

R: Funniness has to come from the soul, people, one just can't make it happen.

Jinny returned with Rachel's drink, catching the last part of Rachel's statement. Setting the drink down in front of Rachel, Jinny sat down.

J: What did I miss?

M: Rachel failing at being funny. (Magda smiled and mouthed "just kidding" in Rachel's direction.)

Jinny picked up her drink and starting thinking about today. Drowning out the conversation around her, she didn't realize she had already drank the three shots she had sat in front of her at the beginning of the evening.

R: ... so we were sitting in the Diner and my friend Darla kept putting those little jelly packets into John's coke. And John, see, he's SO well... let's say flamboyant... and would FREAK out like this...

Rachel grabs the edge of the table and gets this horribly exaggerated expression on her face.

Magda couldn't hold it in anymore. She burst out laughing, which in turn let CD and Angela know they could too. The laughter woke Jinny up from her thinking and she looked around and her coworkers cracking up.

thankie thankie. and yeah, sourbabie, i'm glad i did too. <g> oh... and this section kinda is well, there's something mentioned about jinny that i didn't think i would incorporate, but i decided to anyway. i really don't care, either... it's how i see jinny, so.... here's more:

M: Hey Jin, you with us?

Jinny looked over at Magda and smiled a little. No, she wasn't with them. She was already losing a bit of control.

J: Suure...

CD: Oh boy, here we go.

J: What's that supposed to mean?!

Rachel noticed the change in the atmosphere almost immediately. No longer were Magda, CD, and Angela laughing, and she could tell that Jinny was starting to get drunk. 'I hope I'm not driving her to drink' she thought as she sat there not saying a word.

M: Oh Jin, you know CD's just kidding. Lighten up!

J: Yeah yeah.. okay.

Jinny smiled and raised her beer into the air ready to say something, but then brought it back down as if she was rethinking what she was going to say.

J: You know... I was thinking... and I think that you guys are the best people...

A: Thanks Jinny.

CD: Uh... yeah.

M: Yup. Thanks.

Rachel just sat there not knowing what, if anything she should say, when Jinny turned to her.

J: What? No compliments from the Rach-ster? No "I love you Jinny"s?!

Horrified, Rachel could feel tears stinging her eyes even though she tried to hold them back. Realizing everyone's eyes were on her, she finally burst into tears.

R: Excuse me.

Getting up from the table, Rachel felt nausous. All she wanted to do was leave and never see any of them again. Embarrassment wasn't one of her favorite things.

**back at the table**

M: What the HELL was that, Jinny?!?!

Magda stared at Jinny, not believing what had come out of her friends mouth. CD and Angela looked thoroughly confused, and Magda couldn't blame them.

J: What do you mean, Mag? I was just tryin to get her to talk...

M: No, you just practically shoved it back in her face that she's attracted to you and made her feel horrible!

J: Yeah... well YOU aren't the one she likes!

M: So what?! Does it matter?! She understands that you AREN'T interested... at least treat her like a human being!

Jinny got up from the table and walked to the bar. Tears were starting to form in her eyes now. Magda just didn't understand. There was more to it than that. She just.... doesn't understand. Jinny asked the bartender for another beer and was headed back to the table, when she changed her mind and went to the bathroom to look for Rachel.

**bathroom**

Rachel stood looking at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying and the little mascara that she had on was running down her cheeks. Sighing, she picked up a paper towel and started to wipe up the makeup. Hearing a noise, she turned around and saw Jinny walking into the bathroom.

When Jinny saw Rachel she knew she had made a mistake out at the table. Walking slowly over to the girl with auburn hair, she thought about what she was going to say.

J: Rachel...

R: No, Jinny, that's ok. So you hate me now, big deal, right? (Rachel managed a choked laugh and looked back at the mirror.)

J: I don't hate you. (she paused, thinking of what to say next.) My brother's gay. You know... Casey. (Rachel turned to look at her.) And when I was younger I thought I was too. Well... no, that's not totally true... let's say I was... exploring the possibility.

Rachel didn't know what to say. Jinny was sitting here telling her all these things, yet she had just insulted her in front of everyone. Rachel just stared back at Jinny, waiting for her to continue.

J: SO... I found that I wasn't. I don't like girls. Trust me. But the thing is, when you brought that up I just got SO scared. I didn't... I didn't know what to do.

By this point in time Jinny was slurring her words a little more, and Rachel was concerned.

R: Jinny... ok. It's cool. But... you didn't have to insult me out there.

J: I know... I feel... bad....

Jinny slumped down onto the floor of the bathroom and knocked her head on the tiles. She lay there motionless.

R: JINNY?!?! (walks over to Jinny and shakes her, getting no response) JINNY!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god... HELP!!!!! HELP!!!!!

Rachel ran out of the restroom and into the bar area.

R: Somebody HELP! There's a woman in the restroom! She passed out and hit her head on the floor!!!

The bartender immediately sprung into action, picking up the phone and dialing 911. The three inspectors that were sitting at the table rushed over to Rachel to find out what was going on.

R: Jinny! (she pointed into the bathroom just before she fainted.)

I just got another brainstorm... they're coming too close together... I'll get struck by lightning or something soon.. lol. here's more:

**Hospital**

Jinny awoke to a brightly lit room full of monitors. 'I'm in a hospital' she thought groggily. Trying her best to wake up, she noticed someone slumped in a chair. Magda.

J: Mag...

Jinny could hardly talk her throat was so dry, but her slight whisper roused Magda from her light sleep. Getting up and coming closer to Jinny's bed, Magda was thankful that she was finally awake.

M: Hey there. How ya holding up?

J: I'm not sure. Why... am I here?

M: You fell in the bathroom at Anchorside.

Jinny then remembered what had happened. She had just told Rachel, a girl she knew less than 24 hours one of her well-kept secrets. She didn't know what to do... didn't know if Rachel would tell anyone about it or not.

J: Um... where's Rachel?

M: She's being discharged. Well... at least she was when I went to sleep.

J: Discharged?

M: Oh.. she fainted after she told the bartender to get help.

J: Oh.

Just then, Rachel walked in looking haggard. She had not expected a night like this in her wildest dreams. Seeing Jinny, she put on a haphazard smile and walked further into the room.

R: Hey.

J: Hey. (Jinny paused. She knew she had to talk to Rachel. Alone.) Um.. Mag... could you leave us alone for a few?

M: Sure. (Magda smiled and walked out of the room.)

J: So... what exactly did I tell you in the bathroom?

R: Well.. your brother's gay. And you questioned your sexuality when you were little, but you don't like girls. And you feel bad for... well... insulting me.

Jinny felt relieved. She hadn't told Rachel practically anything.

J: Ok. Thanks for letting me know what I was babbling about. (Jinny smiled) And I really am sorry. I shouldn't have...

R: It's ok... I understand.

Jinny smiled once again as the doctor came into the room.

Dr: Well, Miss Exstead, it looks like you can go home. You suffered a mild concussion, but you seem to be doing fine.

J: Thanks, doc. Hey... what time is it?

Dr: 1:35am. You'd better go home and get some sleep. Your discharge papers will be at the nurses station. (with that, the Doctor turned and walked out of the room.)

J: Oh boy, I get to go home.

R: Yeah... you do. And the good part is they weren't mean and kept you in the clothes you came in. They took mine off of me.

J: (laughing) Yeah, well, maybe they knew I would beat them up if they did.

Both of them were laughing at this point and Magda walked into the room. She smiled at Jinny and sat down in a chair.

M: I see we're getting along now. So Jin, ready to leave?

J: Ready and willing.

M: Good... I'm driving you home.

J: No arguments there.

R: Ok.. I'd better get home. I'm exhausted. Bye guys... see you.. um... in about 6 hours.

Rachel walked out of the room leaving Jinny and Magda to get everything squared away. She left much happier than she came, and that was what mattered most.

**The Division 7:48am**

CD Delorenzo and Angela Reide sat at their desk discussing the events of last night. Both of them were still a little confused about what had exactly happened.

A: So... Jinny insulted Rachel, right?

CD: Yeah... I guess. I mean.. remember what Mag was yelling at her? Something about Rachel being attracted to Jinny... but I still don't understand.

A: Well, obviously things happen that we're not aware of around here.

CD laughed at Angela's remark. There definitely were things that she didn't know about... and most of the time she didn't WANT to know. As CD's laughter was trailing off, Jinny walked into the Division, followed by Magda.

CD: Well well.. Jinny Exstead on time... no EARLY for work. Amazing.

J: Stuff it, CD.

CD: Okay okay... I know where to draw the line.

Jinny wasn't ready for this morning. She had barely gotten enough sleep after her return from the hospital because her mind was still racing. Moving toward her desk, she shrugged off her coat and layed it on the back of her chair.

J: Hey Mag.. we off desk detail today?

M: Yup. Thank god. I was getting sick of it.

J: YOU were?! I was ready to shove those papers down those people's throats.

Magda laughed. Jinny was back to her old self almost. There still seemed to be something bothering her, but she couldn't place her finger on it. Whatever it was, though, Magda was sure she'd work it out.

**Rachel's Apartment 7:50am**

Stepping out of the shower, Rachel sighed. It had certainly been a long night, and she didn't know if she was prepared for today. All she did know was that she would have to get over Jinny and move on. 'There are plenty of girls here in San Fran. And besides... Jinny is over 10 years older than me." The thought made her laugh. Jinny didn't seem 32 at all. Grabbing for the blowdryer, she started humming a song, feeling better about the day.

**The Division 8:23am**

Rachel walked into the police station fresh and ready to start the day. The thing that struck her when she walked in was that there was nobody there, until the captain walked out of her office.

K: Hi Rachel. Got a new project for you.

Captain Kate McCafferty smile dat Rachel. She was very happy with her choice. Not only had she proven herself efficient yesterday, she was more than 5 minutes early today.

K: These... (she handed Rachel a box of files) Are old cases that need to be stored in the room downstairs. And when I say old... I mean old.

Rachel took the heavy box and nodded to the Captain before she walked out through the division doors. Once down in the filing room, Rachel started picking out folders.

R: Vasquez... Ok.. here's where that goes. Smyth... Here. Exstead... (she paused) Exstead?

Rachel was confused. Wasn't Jinny's last name Exstead? Opening the file, her heart skipped a beat. There was a photograph of a 30-something woman that looked so much like Jinny it was incredible. Turning over the photograph, she read the report underneath.

"Mrs. Cynthia Exstead was found dead on June 2, 1986, of a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. She was found by her daughter, Virjinia Exstead, 14. Surviving spouse: John Extead Sr. Surviving Children: Joh Exstead Jr., Virjinia Exstead, Casey Exstead."

Rachel stopped reading. She was in complete shock. Jinny had found her mother dead. At 14. A shiver ran down her spine. That would've killed me, she thought, and continued shuffling through the papers. She found pictures of all the Exsteads at the time of their mother's death. Jinny looked like a carefree 14 year old. 'Carefree before her mother shot herself.' What she found next were picture portfolio's of the children as they grew up, until they reached the age of 18. Tossing aside John's and Casey's, Rachel opened up Jinny's.

There was a picture of Jinny at her 15th birthday party. She was crying. Next came a picture three months later at school. She looked dazed. Then her 16th. Apparently there was no party, but Jinny was in cutoffs and a tank top, smiling for the camera. The next picture is what shocked Rachel so much she dropped the entire folder on the ground, spilling papers everywhere...

ok guys, here's more. just a warning... i changed my mind a little from the preview i posted. and again.. this is how i see jinny. k... enjoy:

The picture had two girls in it. One of them was Jinny. The other had shoulder length blond hair. The blonde was sitting on the right end of the couch, and Jinny was lying down with her head in the blonde girls lap while the blonde girl hand her hand on Jinny's head and was smiling at her.

Rachel just looked at the picture in disbelief. Of course, it could be nothing, and she could be blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Turning the picture over, she read Jinny's inmastakable handwriting. "Me and my girlfriend Taylor. 1988."

**Streets of San Fran. Mag/Jinny 9:17am**

Magda and Jinny were walking back to the car they had parked a block away. So far their case had gotten them no leads, but then again it was only a little after 9am to begin with.

M: So.. back to the station?

J: Yeah, I don't see where else, and until we hear back from Mrs. Witman, we're gonna be stuck.

M: Yeah.. let's go.

Walking back to the car, Jinny wasn't watching where she was going and almost ran into a grabage can, but stopped herself just in time. Magda turned to her partner and laughed.

M: You ok, Jin? I mean... I didn't know you had an affinity for garbage.

J: Very funny, Mag.

M: Jin... ARE you ok? You've been acting a little strange today too...

J: Look, I'm fine, ok? Why does everyone keep asking me if I'm alright.. geez...

Reaching the car, Jinny clicked on the button to unlock the doors and slid into the driver's seat. Magda slowly walked to the passenger door as she wondered if she would ever know what was bothering Jinny.

**File Room: Division 9:30am**

Rachel started to look through the rest of the file. There were more pictures of Jinny, but she was alone in all of the rest. The last page of the file had notations by different investigators and captians about the case. The entry drew her attention. It was by Captain Kate McCafferty:

"I recieved this file when Inspector Jinny Exstead came under my direction in 1994. I had to review it and deem her psychologically able to handle the job. I found her to be. There is no reason for this to affect the status of the inspector."

Rachel placed the paper back inside the folder and gathered up the pictures on the ground, stuffing them back in. Then, walking over to the files, she found the right spot for the folder and shoved it in.

**The Division 12:04pm**

Jinny and Magda sat discussing their case when Rachel walked in carrying the empty box the Captain had given her over three hours ago.

M: You look like you've been busy.

R: Yeah.. filing old cases.

M: (seriously) You didn't read any of them, did you?

Rachel faltered and looked at the ground.

R: No...

J: (laughing) She was only kidding, Rach, calm down. Find anything interesting?

R: (very serious) Yeah, I did.

J: Oh.. what was their name? I'll have to go take a look. (Jinny smiled at Magda who smiled back.)

R: Exstead.

The expression on Jinny's face was hard to read. It was angry, sad, and panicky all at the same time.

J: WHAT?!?! How DARE you read ANYthing that relates to me! If I wanted you to know I would've told you!

Magda couldn't believe the scene that was playing out in front of her. And she also couldn't believe that CD, Angela, and the Captain weren't there to help her.

R: Jinny.. I'm sorry!

J: Sorry?! SORRY?!? That's MY life, Rachel. MINE!

With that, Jinny ran past Rachel and out the door with tears streaming down her face. She couldn't believe that her childhood was known by someone she hardly even knew. 'I can't take this' she thought, as she made her way down to the locker room.

When she arrived, no one else was there, and she sunk down on the floor and cried. She didn't hear the door opening and Rachel walking in until Rachel was kneeling beside her, rubbing her back.

J: Get off of me!! (Jinny shrugged Rachel's hand off)

R: Ok. Jinny... I AM sorry. And I couldn't even imagine how you feel.

J: Yeah, well, you know, NO ONE knows about my mother, Rachel! NO ONE! (except Teddy she thought, which made her cry harder) Magda doesn't know... the Captain doesn't know...

R: (cutting Jinny off) The Captian knows.

Jinny's tear-stained face looked up at Rachel.

J: What?

R: The Captain had to... review the file before she accepted your assignment to her division.

Jinny felt like dying. For seven years Captain Kate McCafferty had known one of Jinny's well-kept secrets. She knew that her mom, Cindy, had killed herself. Jinny started to cry even more.

Magda walked into the locker room and saw Jinny on the floor bawling, and looked to Rachel for some answers.

R: I... I can't tell you, Mag.

Walking over to Jinny, Magda tried to get her to stand up, but Jinny wasn't cooperating. Not knowing what to do, she just started asking Jinny what was wrong, in hopes Jinny would calm down.

J: What's wrong?! She read... Oh god... (Jinny paused, thinking back to the night she found her mother's body) MOMMY!!!!!!!

Magda didn't know what to do. Jinny was screaming about her mother, for some reason, and wouldn't let anyone near her.

M: JINNY!! SNAP OUT OF IT!

Magda's voice penetrated Jinny's thoughts and she fell silent. Realizing that she was in the locker room at work and not finding her mom dead, she relaxed a little. Putting her hand to her head, she stood up and looked at Rachel, who genuinely looked sorry.

J: Thanks Rachel.

Rachel looked at Jinny not knowing what to do or say. Was Jinny being sarcastic? But she sounded so sincere...

R: What?

J: I... I never really did that before. (tears started to pour down her cheeks again) But you still shouldn't have read it. (Turned to Magda) My mom... died when I was 14...

M: Oh god Jin, I'm sorry...

J: She killed herself. (pause) I found her.

By this point, Jinny was numb. She didn't know what to do anymore. Standing there, she took in her partner's reaction to this latest bit of information, and realized from Magda's tears that Magda really did care about her.

M: Jinny. I... Oh my god. I just... oh Jinny...

Magda ran over to her partner and best friend and hugged her tightly, not letting her let go until Magda herself was ready. Finally, feeling as though it was enough, she stood back and looked at Jinny, who for the first time since she came down here looked okay.

**Two Days Later-The Division 12:15pm**

J: Ready for lunch, Mag?

M: Yeah, hold on, just let me go to the bathroom.

Magda got up and walked towards the door of the division while Jinny walked over to the makeshift area the Captian had set up for Rachel.

J: Rach?

R: (not looking up) Hmmm?

J: Lunch with me and Mag?

Startled by Jinny's question, Rachel stared at the paper she was holding, and then, snapping out of it, looked at Jinny.

R: You're asking ME to lunch with you guys?

J: Yeah. Hey... I know you feel sorry for what you did and...

R: Jinny. I just have one question.

J: Okaaay...

R: Who exactly WAS Taylor?

omg.. thanks for all the responses, guys. i'm really happy that all of you are cool with this whole sexuality thing. it's something i wanted to write for a long time. k, here's more:

Jinny froze to the spot. How did Rachel know about Taylor?! The only person who EVER knew was her dad, and that was only because he had overheard a conversation one night and asked her about it. She had nearly broken down then. This time, she wasn't sure how to react.

J: How....?

R: I know I shouldn't bring this back up, but I have to know. It was in your mom's file.

J: What?!

There was no way that Taylor could have possibly been mentioned in her mother's case file. There was just no way.

J: I don't understand.

Rachel sighed, not knowing what to do.

R: Do you want to see?

Tears brimmed in Jinny's eyes as she thought about seeing her mother's case file, and she knew she had to do it.

**File Room**

Jinny's hands slid over the picture of her mother.. taken only 4 days before she killed herself. Tears ran down Jinny's face, and she continued, reading the report and then getting to all the pictures of her and her brothers. She stopped when she came to the one of her and Taylor. She remembered that day. She had actually set up her camera to take the picture and ran over so fast to lay down she almost fell. Taylor couldn't stop laughing until right before the snapshot was taken.

J: I... I thought I lost this... but they took it from me.

Turning the picture over she read what she had written when she was 16. Sighing, she looked at Rachel.

J: I'm sorry. I just... didn't want anyone to know.

R: I understand. So... you lied, basically?

J: Yeah... sorta. Taylor was my first... and only... girlfriend. I couldn't take it emotionally. It wore me out. So according to me, I don't like girls, get it?

R: I get it. I won't tell anyone. Promise.

J: Thanks. Hey... lunch?

R: Yeah.. Mag is probably wondering where we are.

Jinny laughed. She could just picture Magda searching everywhere for them, and the thought made her laugh even more.

**The Division**

Magda paced back and forth by her desk as she waited for Jinny and Rachel to appear from wherever they were. Just then a blonde woman about Magda's age walked in. Magda noticed that she had been crying and that her face was swollen. Forgetting about lunch, Magda went over to the woman who was obviously distraught.

M: Ma'am? Can I help you?

The blonde woman turned around and looked into the kind eyes of the Puerto Rican who had just asked her a question. She was starting to regret coming here, but this woman seemed so nice that she felt a little more at ease.

Lady: Yes... I... I want to report... oh god... you know.. my face.

Magda stared sympathetically at the woman who had obviously thought about coming here carefully. 'I wonder what the bastards name is that did this to her' she thought.

M: Of course, have a seat. Can I have your name?

Lady: Yes. Taylor. Taylor Matthews.

M: Ok Taylor, and who did this to you?

Taylor hesitated. This woman seemed nice now, but maybe she wouldn't be after she told her who had hit her. Swallowing her fear, she spoke.

T: Her name is Leah Armstrong. I... I live with her.

Magda looked up from where she was writing and smiled at Taylor letting her know that it was okay, that she didn't care. Magda could see Taylor's face relaxing.

M: Do you want to press charges?

T: (hesitantly) Yes.

M: Ok, hold on.

Magda started to fill out the necessary paper work when she heard the division door open and looked up. In came Jinny and Rachel, laughing.

M: So THERE you are! Well... go out to lunch alone cause I'm filling out a domestic abuse form. Oh... Taylor, this is my partner on the force, Jinny.

okay, after watching the show and the preview for next week i'm SO hyper so bear with me. and my spacebar is sticking and i'm not liking it. btw.. i'm ADDICTED to having characters cry or something.. lol.

Taylor turned around and was shocked to see Jinny Exstead standing there. Jinny's smile soon turned to a look of panic when she saw Taylor's face.

J: OH mygod! Taylor... what.. what happened?

Jinny rushed over to Taylor and lightly touched her face where the bruises were. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. There was Taylor, all grown up, but she looked as fragile as anything Jinny had every seen. Realizing that her hand was still on Taylor's face, she quickly pulled it away.

T: Jinny?

Then the tears came. Taylor couldn't take it anymore. Her body shaking, she held her head in her hands as she wept, feeling vulnerable and unloved. Jinny stood there, motionless.

M: Hey... it's ok. We'll arrest Leah and it will all be okay.

T: It's... it's not that... well... it is.

Rachel looked at the woman who sat in the chair by Magda's desk. She was pretty. She had definitely gotten prettier since age 16, although she was pretty then too. Deciding that she should do something to make Jinny move, she tapped her on the shoulder, and the action made Jinny jump.

J: Taylor... I....

M: You two know each other I guess?

T: Yeah, when we were 16 we were...

J: (interupting her) We were best friends.

Jinny could see the look of hurt in Taylor's eyes when she said those words. It was like a stab in the heart. They really had loved each other, but Jinny couldn't take it.... couldn't deal with hiding it and people judging. So she had broken it off. She remembered that day so clearly.

::flashback::

Jinny sat on her front porch waiting for Taylor to come over. She had just called her and told her she had something to tell her. Taylor sounded so happy to hear from her, Jinny almost called off what she was about to do but knew she couldn't. Seeing Taylor's blonde hair walking towards her made Jinny get up and shove her hands in her pockets.

J: Hey.

T: Hey. (pause) So.. what did you want to tell me.

Taylor smiled at the sight of Jinny. For once in her life she was happy, and it was Jinny that made it that way.

J: Well.. um... I... (really quickly) don't think we should see each other anymore.

Taylors mouth went dry as her eyes did just the opposite. Jinny didn't just say that. She didn't. Looking into Jinny's eyes, she knew that she did. Taylor wasn't able to say anything. She just turned and walked away, leaving Jinny to watch her leave.

::end flashback::

Jinny brought up her hand to wipe the beginnings of tears from her eyes.

J: Who did this to you?

T: Leah Armstrong. Remember her?

Of course Jinny did. Leah started going out with Taylor about a month after they had broken up. She had hated her for awhile, and then realized she shouldn't. Now she hated her all over again.

J: Yeah, I do. Taylor... I'm sorry.

T: Don't be. You didn't hit me.

J: ....Yeah.... (turning to Rachel) Order in for lunch? Or you can just go.

R: No, I'll order in. Uh.. Mag.. what do you want?

M: Chinese. Pork lo Mein.

R: Jin?

J: Uh... General Tso's Chicken. (pause) Taylor? You want something?

T: Um, no thanks. I couldn't... I really should be going.

M: I'm afraid you'll be here for at least another 2 hours anyway... you'd might as well eat. (she smiled)

T: Ok...umm... Sesame chicken (looks down at her purse) How much will it be?

J: It's on me.

Taylor looked up at Jinny and wondered why she was being so kind to her. After the day Jinny broke up with her, Jinny hadn't said a word to her. It was like she hated her or something.

T: Why are you doing this?

J: Doing what?

T: Being so nice to me! You haven't spoken a word to me your "best friend" since that one day! And now... here you sit... knowing you're so much better than me.... knowing you would never let yourself get into my situation... and you're being SO damn nice it's ridiculous! Jinny... you have NO idea what the past 16 years was like for me... NONE.. because you never spoke to me....

Magda sat there bewildered. She looked to Rachel for help, but Rachel was looking at her nails, pretending not to hear what was going on.

J: (quietly) I'm not better than you. I never was. (raising her voice to normal speaking level) That's why... I did what I did... because I....

M: Hey... what is going on? You guys are like speaking in some sort of code...

T: You wanna know what's going on? Tear up that report because I can handle myself. And by the way, Jinny wasn't my best friend. We were a little closer than that.

Taylor gathered her things and walked out the division door while Jinny sank into her chair with a dazed look on her face.

Magda looked at Jinny, her eyebrows raised. Knowing she shouldn't push Jinny into explaining anything, she gave up and got up from her chair. Walking over to the coffee machine, she kept thinking 'Closer than best friends?' What Taylor had said just wouldn't leave her alone.

Jinny knew Magda was looking for an explaination, but she also knew she wouldn't ask for one either. She would just walk around giving Jinny curious glances until she finnally told her what was going on. Sighing, Jinny placed her head in her hands. When she looked back up, Magda was there again, looking at her.

J: So I suppose you want to know what that was all about?

M: Well.. I WAS wondering.

Jinny looked down at her hands, and then over at Rachel, who was still standing there observing. She hoped Magda wouldn't judge her after what she was about to tell her.

J: Well.. when I was 16 me and Taylor. (she paused, hesitating) we were... together.

M: Oh Jin, that's cool. So you like girls too? It's ok. Nothing's changed. (Magda smiled)

J: I don't like girls, Mag.

M: But you just said...

J: Drop it, ok?

M: Okay.. Okay...

Magda stepped away from Jinny and rustled through the papers on her desk.

J: I'm going out to lunch now. Anyone going with me.

R: Yeah.

M: Sure.

The three of them walk out the division doors.

**Anchorside that night 11:16pm**

Sitting at the bar, Jinny took another sip of her drink. She had lost count of how many she had already consumed, but she was feeling good and that's all that mattered. Then a guy, mid-thirties, came up beside Jinny and she gave him the once over. She liked what she saw. Smiling at him, she moved closer and so did he. Before she knew it, he was leading her out the back.

Once in the alleyway, the man who Jinny had just met lost his charming smile and threw her up against the wall. Jinny was startled. She wasn't expecting this at all. Trying to fight her attacker off, she realized she was too drunk to do anything and she started to cry.

Random person: HEY! GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER!!

The attacker stumbled back and looked toward the voice. It belonged to a woman about 5'4" with short dark hair. The man debated on whether to just take out this new element or whether to just leave the drunk chick alone. He opted for the later... ut was too soon to get caught now. Turning away from Jinny, he walked down the ally without saying a word.

Jinny slumped down to the ground near the wall and stared out vacantly. She didn't know where she was anymore and she didn't really care. The dark-haired woman walked over to her and leaned her head back so she could look into Jinny's eyes.

Woman: You ok? Did he hurt you?

J: I.. ugh.. fine....

W: No you're not. Where do you live? Is there someone I can call?

Jinny passed out before answering the woman's questions. Her head slumped forward and her body was like silly putty.

W: Good one, Karen. Let her pass out.

Karen was tempted to go back into the bar and let the bartender know what happened, but she was afraid the attacker would go after the girl again. Summoning all the strength she had, she lifted Jinny up of the ground and cradled her in her arms.

K: Looks like my couch will be your bed tonight... whoever you are...

ok.. so u know about my whole "contact revalation" so i'm unstuck and the story goes on...:

**Karen's apt. 8:29am**

Jinny woke up and rolled over, but something seemed different to her. Slowly sitting up, she took in the room that she was in. It definitely wasn't her place... it was too neat... and she was on a couch. 'Where am I?' she thought as a memory from last night came flooding back. All she could remember was that a man had attacked her... after that everything was a blur.

She looked down at herself. She was still wearing her clothes. That was a good thing. And at least she was in a nice place. Lying back down on the couch she held her head which had started to pound.

Karen walked out of her bedroom completely dressed for the day and took in the woman lying on her couch. 'She was lucky' she thought grimly. Then, noticing she was awake, Karen walked over to her.

K: Hey.. you're awake.

Jinny opened her eyes some more and saw the short dark haired woman standing next to the couch. Slowly sitting up again so to not make her headache worse, Jinny frowned.

J: What...happened?

K: Well... some.... guy was attacking you and well, I told him to leave you alone. Then you passed out on me before I could find out where you lived or who to call. And I was afraid if I left you alone the guy might come back.

J: Thanks.

Jinny didn't know what else to say. Her head was pounding and she felt sick. This woman had saved her life and she was speachless.

K: Sure.

J: Hey... what time is it?

K: 8:34am.

J: ****! I needed to be at work at 8!

Standing up quickly, Jinny ran her hand through her hair. She didn't even know where she was, let alone how she was going to pull off a lie to the captain this morning.

J: Hey... where exactly is this?

Karen told her and Jinny was relieved. It was less than a block away from the police station.

J: Thanks. Hey.. I gotta go. And.. thanks again, really.

Opening to door, Jinny threw one last glance back at Karen before leaving. Karen stood there, not exactly sure just what happened.

K: Yeah.. sure... you're welcome...

**The Division 8:40am**

Jinny walked in through the doors of the division. She looked horrible. Her hair was a mess, her clothes were wrinkled and torn, and her eye makeup was running. Captain Kate McCafferty walked out of the office and spotted Jinny.

K: EXSTEAD! In my office NOW!

Jinny knew this was coming. She had even prepared herself on the walk here. Now that the time had come, however, she wasn't ready. Walking into the Captain's office, she shut the door behind her. Captain gave her the once over and motioned for her to sit.

K: What the hell is this, Jinny?

J: I... had a bad night, ok?

K: I can see that. (pause) Get out of here. Go home... you're of no use to me like this!

J: Captain, I can explain!

K: I'm not going to listen. You KNOW you're in trouble already Jinny, don't make it worse. No go home and take a shower for gods sake!

Jinny numbly got up from the chair she was in and opened the door. Walking over to Magda's desk she told her partner what had gone on with the captain.

M: Yeah... well, you really should go home and get some rest. What happened last night, Jin?

J: I really don't want to talk about it.

Grabbing her coat that she flung onto her chair when she walked in, Jinny walked right back out the division doors, less than 10 minutes after she entered them.

**Jinny's Apt. 9:04am**

Walking into her apartment, Jinny looked around and sighed. Compared to whatshernames....Karen's... it looked like a tornado had blown through it. Stepping over something, Jinny headed toward her bedroom and started undressing. Moving toward the bathroom she turned the shower on and let the steam penetrate her aching muscles. 'Captain was right for once. A shower would be good.' Stepping into the shower, she let the water run over her.

When she was done, Jinny grabbed a towel and wrapped it around her, securing it in place. Looking at herself in the steamy mirror, Jinny realized her life wasn't exactly what she had wanted it to be. She had been promiscuous with men since she was 17. She had even had a few pregnacy scares. And she knew why she had even started it. It was her way of rejecting any and all feelings she had ever had towards Taylor... or any other girl for that matter. If she slept with men, the relationship with Taylor was a fluke. Now she knew it wasn't.

Just then there was a knock on her door. 'Demmit' she thought, as she quickly grabbed her robe and put it on. Opening the door she saw Karen there.

J: Uh.. hi.

K: Hi. You forgot your badge at my apartment. So you're a cop?

J: Yeah. Thanks. Hey.. come on in. I'm really sorry about this morning, I was just in a rush.

Karen walked into the apartment and surveyed it. It certainly wasn't perfection, she thought, but she smiled a little anyway. She wasn't expecting perfection from this girl... who's name was Jinny, she found out from her badge.

Jinny noticed Karen looking around her apartment and gave her a half smile.

J: Ok.. I'm a mess, really. You can wait out here. I'm gonna go get dressed.

As Jinny walked back into her bedroom, Karen sat on the couch and waited. A few minutes later Jinny emerged dressed in black slacks and a dark maroon top.

J: You want anything to drink? I have beer, diet coke, and well... other alcoholic beverages.

K: Diet coke.

J: Coming right up.

Jinny walked into her kitchen and grabbed two diet cokes. She didn't need this girl to think that she was an alcoholic. 'Wait... why do I care?' she thought. She couldn't answer her question.

Handing Karen her diet coke, Jinny sat down on the couch next to her and opened her own.

J: So... what made you stop him?

K: Well... I don't know... maybe the fact that I don't think it's very wonderful for anyone to get hurt.

J: What I MEANT to ask was, why didn't you just get help? Why did you try to stop him yourself?

Karen paused, hesitating on her answer. She knew exactly why. Actually... there were two reasons, one, she'd been watching Jinny all night and was attracted to her and two... the one she was going to say out loud.

K: Because every second counts. Who knows what would've happened to you if I would've went back inside. (she paused before asking her next question) Why did you drink so much?

Normally, Jinny would've yelled at whoever had asked that question and possibly thrown them out, but something was stopping her from getting angry.

J: Because... (she paused) well, I drink. It's what I do.

Realizing what she just said, Jinny sat there shocked. She had never admitted even that to anyone.

Karen, sensing there was something wrong, put down her drink and looked at Jinny.

K: What's wrong?

J: I don't know why I told you that. I've never even admitted it to my best friend.

K: Jinny, look, it's cool. I mean... maybe it's easier because you DON'T know me and won't ever have to see me again, ya know?

J: I won't?

K: Won't what?

J: Ever see you again?

even tho it seems that i'm only being read by one person now (thanx mo http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif ) i shall continue nevertheless.... so here's more:

K: Why do you ask that?

J: I... don't know.

She really didn't know. All Jinny knew was that this girl, Karen, who sat on her couch saved her life and was one of the nicest people she's ever met. Usually people meet her and run because she scares them away. But Jinny had been drunk, incoherant, mean when she woke up, and had admitted she drank a lot, and Karen was still here.

J: Well, I really don't have a lot of close friends. I mean... there's Mag, she my partner on the force. And of course the people I work with, but...

K: But you still have to deal with work when you talk to them, right?

J: Yeah... right.

It felt like Karen was reading her mind. It scared her just a little.

K: Hey, do you wanna go out for a bite to eat? It's still only a little after 10, so..

J: Sure. Actually, I'm hungry... no, starved.

K: You're not sick?

J: Uh... no.

K: (laughing) Oh. When I drink it takes me three days to get back in working order.

Jinny laughed. Karen was cool, she thought. A little too neat, but cool. Running into her bedroom she grabbed a pair of socks and black shoes which she quickly put on. 'What are you DOING Jinny?!' she asked herself. 'This is absolutely crazy.' Again, she couldn't answer her own questions, and her thought process was interupted by a her phone ringing. Diving across her bed to get the phone, she answered it.

J: Hello?

R: Hey Jin. It's Rach. So... you ok?

J: Yeah yeah... I'm fine. I'm in trouble, but I'm fine.

R: (laughing) Yeah... I think I got that part.. the trouble part I mean.

J: Really? (pause) Are people talking about me?

R: Uh...

J: Rachel! Are they or not?!

R: Well... I mean.. yeah...

J: Who?

R: I don't want to rat anybody out, Jinny.

J: You're not. Just tell me.

Rachel could hear the urgency in Jinny's voice and looked up from her makeshift desk. She could still see CD and Angela over by the coffee machine, and it looked like they were still in deep conversation.

R: CD. Ang. You know...

J: What are they saying?

R: Jinny! (pause) Ok... just that... a bad night for you usually involved... getting too drunk, screwing some guy, and realizing your mistake in the morning.

Jinny was silent. Tears sprung to her eyes as she realized how true it was. Wiping her tears away with her hand, she spoke into the reciever.

J: Thanks Rach.

R: You ok?

J: No... but that's ok. I'll live.

R: You're not going to do something foolish are you?

J: No! How could you.... Oh, nevermind. Look.. I'll be fine. Just... tell Mag I say hi, ok?

R: Ok Jinny. See you tomorrow.

J: Yup. Tomorrow.

Jinny hung up the phone and turned around toward the door to her living room. Karen was standing there, a look of concern on her face.

K: Are you sure you're alright?

J: Yeah.

Jinny got up from the bed and walked past Karen into the living room. Then she turned around letting out a small laugh.

J: Well... you've definitely seen all sides of me, haven't you?

K: Yeah... yeah I have. I'd have to say... you're definitely not one-dimensional.

J: Thanks. It really is a compliment....

K: Umm.. I know it might not be my place to ask, but what happened that got you so upset?

J: I... something somebody said.

K: Okay.

J: About me.

K: Bad?

J: Bad and... true.

Jinny frowned. There she went again, telling this near-stranger things. It just didn't make any sense.

K: What... do you mean?

J: Well... when I went in this morning I told the captain I had had a bad night. And then... (she paused, the tears coming back) Rachel, the clerical girl, called and I asked her if people were talking about me and she said they were. She said they said... (pausing again, a little hesitant) that a bad night for me involved getting too drunk, screwing some guy, and realizing my mistake in the morning.

This made Jinny burst into tears. Now she was crying in front of this girl, but she couldn't help it. The last few days had been almost mind-numbing, and it hurt. It hurt so bad because she felt that she didn't know herself anymore.

K: Hey... it's ok... I'm sure it's not completely true.

Jinny looked at Karen.

J: No, it is. But it's not like I wanted it to end up this way... it was all just sort of... a reaction....

K: A reaction to what?

k, here's the rest:

Jinny didn't know what to say. It was a reaction to several things. One, the one she finally admitted to herself earlier in the bathroom, that she didn't want to face any feelings she had for any girls and so she slept with men to prove that to herself. And two, her mother's death had a big thing to do with it too.

J: A lot of stuff, really.

K: Ok, well, you don't have to tell me if you don't want. You still wanna go for breakfast?

J: Sure... just... let me look presentable.

Jinny walked into her bathroom and washed her face. Drying it off with a towel, she smiled.

**Anchorside that night 10:53pm**

Jinny walked in to the familar place and spotted her coworkers at the table across the way. Making her way toward them, she got the bartenders attention and ordered herself a beer.

M: Hey Jin! You're looking better!

J: Yeah.. I feel better too.

CD: You ok? I mean... you looked pretty bad this morning.

Jinny shot CD a glare, but then decided against it, and sat down nodding.

J: Yeah. I'm ok now. But last night was no picnic... lemme tell you.

M: Jin, what happened? You wouldn't tell me earlier....

J: Well, let's just say I got attacked. And I don't remember what the guy looked like. Then this girl, Karen, practically saved my life, but I passed out before I could tell her where I lived so I spent the night on her couch.

A: You got attacked?! OMG... are you alright?!

J: Yeah.. I'm fine. Really. Just had... a really bad night.

Jinny took a sip of her beer and glanced over at CD and Angela, who looked guilty as sin. 'Well, at least they feel bad' she mused.

She had had an interesting day. After her and Karen had breakfast, she went home and called Casey and asked to meet him in the park at 5... just like they had done before. This time, however, she told him her big secret. He had, of course, hugged her. Casey always did that. She felt much more secure of herself after their talk.

Jinny knew that her life was chaotic. She knew she had problems. She knew she liked men. She knew she liked women. But she also knew that she'd probably never date another one. It just wasn't... something she desired at that moment in time. Taking another sip of her beer, she smiled. She knew who she was... faults and all.

M: Yo JINNY! I've been trying to talk to you for the last two minutes!

Jinny snapped out of her thoughts. She looked around at the table at the three other women there and realized how lucky she was to have them as coworkers and friends. She raised her bottle.

J: Here's to knowing yourself! CHEERS!

The three other women looked startled, but raised their glasses as well. They clinked together with Jinny's bottle, making a louder noise than anticipated. The four women laughed and smiled. It was definitely a moment to remember.
