View Full Version : Not that I mind, but why did N@N edit out the opening credits Tonight?
TVFactFan 08-17-2008, 02:41 AM It was such a beautiful EDIT, the episode started with the teaser and then after that no opening credits just right back to the episode. It was done for all the eps, wonder what brought this on?
Now I don't recall the eps not having opening credits anymore on ABC after 1995 so that's why I was confused tonight
Lorimar Television 08-17-2008, 02:48 AM Im not sure what you nmean. Starting in season 7, they no longer showed the theme anymore.

Now that I didn't know, Wonder why I don't remember that since I recorded the eps off ABC right up until the end. I thought N@N was starting to be creative like TBS for a second, I knew it was too good to be true-lol
DSfan 08-17-2008, 11:23 AM I'm not sure which season the episode was but if you look at the bottom of the screen I recall some late seasons they wouldn't have a theme song but would show "starring Reginald.....etc" just like how they do with the producers and titles like that.
Lorimar Television 08-17-2008, 01:30 PM Yup right after they show the show title at the beginning of the cold open theyd show all the cast names at the bottom of the screen. They did that from season 7 on, except two season 7 episodes used the seasoon 6 theme song one last time.
TVFactFan 08-17-2008, 01:37 PM Well I guess it made sense because by season 7 all the main characters were adults on the show so hat family matters theme which matched a family sitcom wasn't really needed anymore.
JulieSomoski 08-17-2008, 02:54 PM I thought they removed the opening theme starting with season 6?
I do like how instead of going to a commercial after the opening teaser scene, they go right into the next scene - ABC Family always aired a commercial there.

I'm going to have to check some of my old tapes and see a ABC ep because I really don't remember these openings.
Pavan 08-17-2008, 03:00 PM Solomon, they never had opening theme song after season 6. Season 7 on ABC and Season 8 on CBS only had the credits during the first scene on the bottom of the screen. I clearly recall that. This was the point in time when most sitcoms leaned away from an opening theme and just had credits during the first scene on the bottom.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I just want to go back in time and just see what I have forgotten over the past 12 years.

Actually season 7 and 8 were on ABC. Season 9 was on CBS. And no they had the theme in season 6. It was just shown on nick.
Brent88 08-17-2008, 07:58 PM 2 episodes from Season 7 actually have the theme, "Talk's Cheap", which just aired, where Steve/Stefan/Myrtle all appear and the Christmas episode "Fa La La Laagghh!"
But yeah, otherwise it's gone.
Jessica 08-17-2008, 08:08 PM I think "The Naked and the Nerdy" is a funny episode from season 7. And I aso like "Dream Date".
Schmoopie 08-17-2008, 11:35 PM Im not sure what you nmean. Starting in season 7, they no longer showed the theme anymore.
Stations used to do this with "Full House" too. At the beginning of the series, the theme song was actually kind of long but as it progressed, the TV editing became choppier and choppier.
Andrea
ryan423 08-18-2008, 12:35 AM Schmoopie, IDK about you, but I hate the edits on theme songs. Leave them as they were:] Thats why I hate watching George Lopez on N@N or my local CW.

Well yes in season 1-5 it was 1:25, season 6-7 was 1 min, And season 8 was 42 seconds.
But Family Matters theme in season 1-3 was 1:18, season 4-6 was 52 sec, and the rest didnt have one.
Jessica 08-18-2008, 05:21 PM Sometimes, yeah. Maybe they thought it was too long.
Johnny be good! 08-20-2008, 10:54 AM I think they should do the full credits, just like on the dvds.
Jessica 08-20-2008, 12:49 PM But Family Matters is not on DVD.

He probably is talking about the bootlegg version

Oh right. And actually, I think Maxine (Cherie Johnson) could get a part in the theme song, She was in the show a lot, and she was good.

WHAT?
Jessica 08-21-2008, 05:29 PM WHAT?
I didn't undertand either.
TVFactFan 08-21-2008, 06:57 PM WHAT?
A Complete set of Family Matters episodes that was not a COMMERCIAL RELEASE instead it was released by someone who recorded all the eps at home and put it out in the trading community to be circulated to whoever wanted to buy them.

Now I get it. I think a real complete DVD of Family Matters should be released.
Furienna 08-21-2008, 09:51 PM Yep, there was no opening credit sequence in season 7. Pretty weird, really. But I guess the days of long opening credits sequences were over by then. Currents sitcoms like "Two and a half men" never has an opening sequence longer than 10 seconds. Time for comercials became more important than time for quality.

Do current shows in Sweeden still have long themes?
Furienna 08-22-2008, 12:43 AM Hmmm... That depends on the show. What do you think, Jessica?

Sometimes.. Many of the new shows doesn't have an opening, or it's a really short one. But all of the old TV shows has openigs wich is often at least 1 minute long.
Furienna 08-22-2008, 09:57 AM I think sitcoms have shorter openers than what the dramas have.

Ok, i don't watch drama that much.

I actually thought that they stopped using the theme song because by season 7, the show veered so far off its original premise. The theme song seemed to no longer fit the series.
Furienna 09-24-2008, 11:07 PM No, that's just crazy. Every sitcom shortened its credits around that time.
I know that, I am just saying that is what I originally thought when I saw Family Matters was no longer using the theme song. And it is not crazy because as time went on the theme song started not to fit the series premise.
JulieSomoski 09-26-2008, 07:39 PM No, that's just crazy. Every sitcom shortened its credits around that time.
That's not entirely true. In 1995, many sitcoms still had their opening credits: Roseanne, Friends, Home Improvement, Mad About You, The Nanny, and Step by Step, just to name a few, still retained their opening credits just like their previous seasons. It wasn't around the early 2000's that networks began taking away the opening sequences all together.
Furienna 09-26-2008, 11:59 PM The trend started in the 90s though. Just see how both "Family Matters" and "Step by step" made their opening credits shorter and shorter.
And in the 7th season, the show was still about the family, so the opening credits would still have been suitable.

AMEN TO THAT! ;)
