Ah, you're an anti-dentite!! (as Seinfeld's Kramer would say.) Seriously, I'm sorry to hear of your phobia. I will pray for you, and please let us know how things go. :bighug:

I wish I could help you out but the Dentist is never fun. It's painful, it's inconvenient, and it is kinda scary...But what I've learned is that the only way to get over that type of fear is to just DO it.

It helps if you have a good dentist, too. I wouldn't keep going back to the same one if they're a jerk, like you said.

i'm so lucky to have such a great dentist. dr, farley has been the best, he's very skilled at what he does and i trust him immensely. i've been going to him since 3rd grade. i feel very confident with his work. i also see another dentist, dr. quatracelli for root canals only and he's the best as well. i've had 3 or 4 done by him and have never once been afraid. its like a walk in the park. the only time i was ever scared was when i had to have a tooth extracted without being put under but everything turned out alright.

my teeth also weren't the very best when i first started seeing dr. farley as there was a long gap (3 years) between visits at one point. i had a cavity in almost every tooth and although he did everything he could to save them a few needed to be pulled (luckily in back where you can't see) but after several appointments dr, farley got my teeth in order. he was very good to me, working on 2 or 3 at a time. sometimes i'd have 2 appointments in a week as he was aware my insurance was about to run out. i ran out of insurance last may and it has been a year but now that we got the loan i can afford to get benefits from my job and will be able to see him once again.

I can relate to this thread!

I see the dentist every three months and am always nervous a few days before the appointment. Even though I haven't needed dental work in the last year 8 months or so.

It does help to have my walkman radio when my teeth are being cleaned or worked on. I play tapes and that makes the appointment less boring and helps with the nerves.

Sedation dentistry is availabe for those who are really nervous.

The dentist is one dr. I don't fear. I don't exactly like it because it grosses me out beyond belief, I hate the smell of the rubber gloves, and I choke on those damn things they put in your mouth to take x-rays, but it fairly painless. I've been lucky and have had only one cavity in my life. Getting braces was wayyyyyyyy worse that anything the dentist has ever done to me.

I'd go to the dentist 100x in a row before I'd go to the GYN. That's the worst dr. on the planet!

Anyway, just close your eyes and pretend you're somewhere you'd rather be. A friendly hygentist is helpful, so hopefully you can get a good one. Good luck!

I agree. I don't hate the dentist, it just really annoys me to go. It seems that they are forever polishing and flossing and whatever else they feel the need to do. It's really not that bad, though. I also agree about the friendly hygienist. If you get one that you like this time, you should ask to get that same person the next time. It will make your overall experience a lot better.

I refused to go to the dentist for years due to fear and ended up having to go due to a chipped tooth which developed into a cavity. The guy I ended up going to was surprisingly friendly and reassuring and the experience wasn't nearly as bad as I expected (nor was the pain - there was little of it). I now go regularly for the 'check-ups' and am trying to repair the damage of years past.

The sooner you go, the easier it's going to be.

Who likes going to the dentist? That's just awful! And it's expensive too! Here in Sweden, going to the dentist is free until you're twenty years old. But that still means I've had to pay for the last four years. :( But I still go, once a year. (I haven't heard from them yet this year though.)

How did it go, Neonfire?

Yes, how did it go? I've been wondering myself.

This really isn't the place for the dental story from hell that I was going to tell, so I'll just say this. I really like my dentist, although their method of doing things is rather strange. They can't do a checkup and cleaning in one visit. It has to be separate, which of course costs more money. But still, I do like going because you can watch TV while you are there (really!). I would never watch something funny, though... can you imagine!?

You get to watch TV at the dentist's?

My dentist moved to a new and bigger building late last year. There is a flatscreen TV fixed to the upper part of the wall in each room.
It has cable channels, too. But I always bring a walkman radio/cassette and listen to that instead.

That's neat.

Once when I was ten years old, I had to do a sonogram on my heart. (They thought there was a weird sound coming from my heart back then.) And since I was creeped out by x-rays and sonograms back then, they brought in a TV and a VCR and showed me Disney cartoons, so I could watch that instead.

Watching TV at the dentist does have it's ups and downs. I always have them put on TCM, since I can't get that at home. Once when I was there I started watching this movie called "Mad About Men" that starred Glennys Johns (the mom in Mary Poppins, the grandmother in "While You Were Sleeping" and also the grandmother in that Dennis Leary Christmas movie with Kevin Spacey). The only problem was that I couldn't stay to watch the whole movie (that's a first... WANTING to stay at the dentist!) and now I can't find the movie anywhere! It's a really cheesy (but funny) movie about this woman who meets a mermaid who looks just like herself. She and the mermaid switch places and the mermaid helps her to win her fiance back. I want to see it SO badly!
