“Missed Opportunities”
Jinny and Casey sat on a park bench. Casey had his head in his hands with a distraught look on his face, and Jinny had a worrisome look on her face as well as she stared at him. She leaned over and put her hand on his knee.
“I know you’re probably getting some bad reps about your eh…situation…but you are a darn good cop. Don’t let what those guys at the station say effect you. They’re just talking about gays in general, not you. They don’t know about you. Don’t let dad bother you either, he’ll come around in his time.”
Jinny patted her brother on the leg and watched for any sign of conformation that he understood what she was saying. She breathed a small sigh of relief when he looked up at her and forced a smile.
She smiled back. “It’s who you are. You’ll be accepted for it, it just takes longer with some than with others. Trust me, I’ve been in situations similar to this before, just give it time.” She looked him in the eyes. “In the meantime you have my apartment, cell, pager, and work number. There is no reason that you can’t get up with me to talk, cause I’m always there to listen.”
Casey nodded, “Yeah, Jin. Thanks, I’ll remember that.”
“You better,” she said playfully.
They sat in silence for a moment and a call came over Casey’s radio and he stood to leave. “Thanks.”
Jinny rose to her feet as well and gave him a hug. “Anytime.”
She watched as he walked out of sight…
Once Casey was out of sight Jinny sat back down on the bench and put her face in her hands. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” she muttered under her breath.

The Captain walked out of her office and took a look at the clock on the wall. She then looked around the room. “Eight o’clock and it seems all’s here…except Ms. Exstead of course.” She didn’t even bother guessing where Jinny was, nor did she asked Magda if she had heard from her. Instead she just begin passing out files…
“Jackson and Young, two bank robberies in as many hours. We’re thinking they were done by the same group--get on it.” She tossed the files to the two detectives and pulled out another one.
“Kilven and Sylanne, murder downtown outside a Mervin’s Bakery. Suspect in custody, but we need some hard evidence against him or he’s free by noon.” The two detectives nodded, took the file, and left.
The Captain looked down at another file and then up and Angela and C.D. and smiled. “Delorenzo and Reid, how are your babysitting skills?”
C.D. dropped the papers she was holding on the desk and placed her hands on her hips, staring at the captain in disbelief. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.”
“Nope,” the captain shook her head.
“I think it will be fun,” Angela said with a cheerful attitude.
“You would,” C.D. muttered as she took the file from the Captain and walked out of the Division.
“Have fun,” Magda said as Angela followed C.D. out the door.
The Captain turned to Magda with the last file. “Any idea where your partner is?”
“Not a clue, Cap,” she responded shaking her head.
The Captain sighed and crossed her arms. “If this continues then I will have to put Jinny on probation. There is no known need for this continued tardiness of hers…”
Before she could finish her sentence Jinny walked in the door. Once seeing the Captain staring at her she stopped dead in her tracks.
“This better be good, Exstead,” the Captain said.
Jinny sighed, “At six this morning I got a call from Casey, my brother, saying he needed to talk. I’ve been with him ever since.”
“Is everything ok with him?” the Captain said, still trying to keep her tough demeanor.
Jinny looked at the floor and then at the Captain. “We’re working on it.”
Kate nodded and handed the remaining file to Magda. “Try not to let it happen again.” With that she turned and entered her office.
Jinny breathed a sigh of relief.
“Everything ok?” Magda asked.
“Yeah, for now I think so.”
Magda nodded, and knowing not to push Jinny any further she dropped the subject. “Ready to go.”
“Let’s do it.”
They both left the Division…
A girl of about 5 feet 7 inches in height stood in front of C.D. and Angela with her arms folded across her and her eyes looking each of them up and down. C.D. and Angela stood sizing up the girl as well…
“Inspectord Delorenzo”
“and Reid”
The girl slightly nodded her head. “Jeffcoat, no fancy title.”
C.D. turned to Angela and smirked, “Looks as if we have a comedian here.”
“Yeah, but there’s nothing funny about watching somebody be beaten to near death is there?” Angela said bluntly.
“I would certainly think not,” C.D. answered.
They both turned to the young teenager and motioned to the nearest conference room. “Shall we?” C.D. asked.
“Like I have a choice,” the girl mumbled.

Jinny and Magda sat in Jinny’s car outside “Jim Bob’s Drugstore.” They observing the place, while trying to determine how they should handle the case.
“So somebody’s really been robbing this place nightly, and the local TV station hasn’t even heard about it yet?” Jinny asked. “At least we know this isn’t a ‘fame crime’.”
“Yeah, but whatever is happening just isn’t making sense. I mean don’t you think its odd their security camera conveniently doesn’t work at the times of these robberies?” Magda said.
“Yeah, but there’s a different employee at work during every robbery…Conspiracy maybe?”
“It’s something.”
They sat in silence for a minute. A smile slowly crept across Jinny’s face. She cranked the engine and drove around the block, so their car wouldn’t begin to look suspicious.
“I have an idea,” she stated bluntly to Magda. “You look like someone in need of a new job…”
Magda nodded with a smile, catching on to what Jinny was getting at…
… … … … … … … … … … … …
“Sweetheart, are you sure we can’t talk this over?” Kate begged to her daughter who was on the other end of the phone. “I mean two months is a long time.” There was a pause. “I know your aunt can afford it, but still, I will miss seeing you.” Yet, another pause. “I know we don’t see each other much as it is…” Yet, another pause. “New York isn’t just down the road, dear.” Kate bit her tongue, as it looked like she had aged five years within the past fifty minutes. “I guess there’s nothing I can do about it then…I’ll see you when you get back. I love you.” With that Kate hung up the phone, not giving Amanda another chance to say anything. Kate walked around her desk and then out of her office. She looked up at the clock, and seeing it was noon, left the Division…
