In Part 3 of my series on Canadian TV Fall 2008 schedules, I will focus on digital specialty channels. Those are the ones we have to pay for. So how much bang will you be getting for your bucks in September? Take a look and judge for yourselves.

Thanks a lot for doing this!

I'm disappointed with Dejaview, they only get Charles in Charge and Kate & Allie (Who's the Boss? is one that is returning right?). It used to have Taxi and Gilligan and it just seems to be replaying 3-4 shows all day.

Teletoon Retro is soo good. It is how the old Teletoon used to be in 1998-1999 but only retro. I have Illico from videotron which doesn't offer the channel so this really bothers me but I still have most of the channels I need. Hopefully, they will soon provide Teletoon Retro. They deserve a round of applause for this!

TV Land Canada better be good this year!

Are you doing TV Tropolis too, or just Pav?

Somebody needs to air The Wonder Years again!

The two best shows are Good Times and Maude and they're shown only twice a day and everything else is on a ridiculous six times.

Thank you Pavanbadal for doing this. Now the puzzle is finally complete.

At first glance, I'd say the TV Land Canada lineup looks a little better than last year but not as good as I was hoping for. But still---we're getting Bilko! I am so proud.

Just for fun, how would you compare it with TV Land USA (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=228839)?

My verdict: The original is still better, unless they start filling the schedule with reality shows which is bound to happen at some point. Their best shows are on in the afternoon, while on the Canadian side the best shows come on in the morning. Now if they were to get rid of "Dallas", "Hart To Hart" and "Fantasy Island" and put on a few more sitcoms it would look more promising.

One more thing: I agree with those of you who are disappointed with DejaView. I'm not happy with it either. Try Teletoon Retro instead!

That's all. Happy viewing everyone!

TV Land Canada, what a disappointment! They really didn't add anything that should be labelled classic. Ready or Not, that show is from like 1996, it should be on Global or YTV or Family not TV Land, oh boy.

Wonder Years???

I'm amazed that they added Bizarre as I actually requested that show on their website. It might be an acquired taste for some people but I always enjoyed it. Too bad there's not more American shows but at least they got rid of the worst Canadian ones like Smith & Smith which should remain unseen by human eyes forever more (hopefully). Bury those tapes.

Although I think TVLand Canada does a little better with their show selection than their American counterpart (TVLand), there's still some shows I question WHY they're even on the schedule, and WHY do they need a 1 hour block each day? ("Bizarre", "Ready or Not", "Smith & Smith", "Veranda Bech Comedy Club") Does anybody even watch this?

Dallas, Hart To Hart, Fantasy Island may not be my cup of tea either but they're still popular shows, with loyal fans.

I'm very happy Lassie stayed on the schedule (I'm trying to get a complete set together on dvd :) )

I wish they show new episodes of "Love American Style" & "The Gary Shandling Show". They've just been recycling the same episodes over and over. (and I need the last season of Gary Shandling !!! )

The 10 am to Noon block is a waste with the roatating shows each day. I wish we had 4 new comedies in that slot or two new hour long dramas instead.

Phil Silvers is a welcome addition, (but only 2 shows a week??!!)

Overall - TVLAnd Canada Fall Schedule - :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

I love Lassie too and have hardly missed an episode. At least it's a classic show. I was hoping they would add another animal show to go with it, something like Daktari or even The Littlest Hobo (okay maybe not that lol).

The weekend schedule is pretty lame with 6 hours of Dallas - why can't they spare just one of those hours and show us some one season wonders?
Somebody has posted an episode of The Paul Lynde show on youtube and it's hilarious, it would be perfect for TV Land wouldn't it? Just give us something we haven't already seen ten million times.

Oh well, maybe next year.

I'm happy as well that Lassie stayed and am happy/surprised that Happy Days is still on. However, they keep reairing the same ones. I don't really watch the show all that much and flipping through yesterday, it was the one with the fencing and I know I have seen that one at least 3x.

All the shows you mentioned are Canadian, hence why they are on the schedule. The CRTC requires TV Stations in Canada to program a certain amount of Canadian Content that differs from channel to channel. It makes sense for the networks as it forces them to at least produce some original programming rather then an entire US import schedule. But for channels like TV Land that lean on quality classics that (lets face it) Canada has very little of it forces them to bring shows like "Ready Or Not" on.

Look at BBC Canada's schedule. They are forced to air shows like Holmes On Homes for their Cancon.

That's true, I forgot about the CRTC Canadian Content rule.

Still, I'm sure there could have been some better choices, i.e. "Beachcombers" (the early years), someone already mentioned "Littlest Hobo" (the origianal & the revival from the early 80's), "The Eddison Twins", "Wayne & Shuster" (if you HAVE to have a variety show).
There's so many others.

Maybe someone should forward this website to TVLAND Canada or better yet, higher me as their program director. ;(

7:30am Littlest Hobo, The
8:00am The Eddison Twins
8:30am The Kids of Degrassi Street (1982-1985) The one that got it all started.

Thanks for posting that website link, there's shows on there that I haven't thought about in years. You would think some of these would be good candidates for TV Land Canada: George, Huckleberry Finn, Matt & Jenny, Hangin' In, Edison Twins, Last of the Mohicans. I actually remember seeing reruns of that last one (it's from the 50s) sometime in the 70s so copies of it probably exist somewhere. George was an incredibly cheap sitcom about a St. Bernard which even as a kid I knew it was horrible, yet my siblings and I couldn't stop watching it for some reason.
And don't forget Hammy Hamster too. The site says it was a cult favorite with college kids in the 70s and I can imagine why.
It's classic "stoner TV" lol.

If you ask me, the one Canadian sitcom that I'd love to see again is "The Trouble With Tracy". I know that it's gained quite a bad reputation over the years as being one of the worst sitcoms ever made but I actually liked it when it was first on and I can't believe that, with all the channels we have up here, that someone hasn't tried to air it at least once. Besides, it would be a nice change of pace from stuff like "Ready Or Not", "Danger Bay", "Beachcombers", or anything else that we're forced to watch about 5 times a day.

(With the exception of "King Of Kensington". I like that show too!)

"So many good shows" might be a bit of a stretch but I would agree that children's programming is one area where Canada excelled at. There are a few classics in the other areas of Canadian TV (Kids In The Hall, Beachcombers etc.) but Children's shows like Hilarious House of Frightenstein, The Friendly Giant, Polka Dot Door, Sharon, Lois & Bram and of course the master himself Mr. Dressup were great for their time. I would like to see TV Land try something different and airing some of these shows (I'm sure there are others I am forgetting) in an early morning block rather then picking up Ready Or Not but alas I don't see them doing it. At least Hilarious House of Frightenstein seems to air on every other cable channel.

I mean, I guess I might have overexaggerated. For me, at least, when I was little there were some shows that I personally liked a lot.

-Shining Time Station
-Tales from the Cryptkeeper
-Lassie
-Hardy Boys
-Theodore Tugboat
-Arthur (never knew it was Canadian)
-Dog City
-Uh Oh!
-Wimzie's House
-Mystery Files of Shelby Woo
-Big Wolf on Campus
-Radio Active
-Bunch of Munsch
-Richard Scarry

I enjoyed all of those shows in the past. I was surprised that Canadian television had such an impact on me when I was younger.

You're right. I hate it too. PRIME used to do it all the time with most of their series. I remember when PRIME had "Bewitched". They would never show the entire series from start to finish. They would show the first two seasons, then skip the next two and go right to Seasons 5 and 6, then start over again. It sounds complicated and it was very irritating. DejaView has continued this dubious tradition with their latest lineup. I've already listed the shows that will be on their fall schedule. Today, they announced how much of those shows that you will see, so take note if you plan to tape any of them.

Charles In Charge, Seasons One - Five

Weekends from 3pm – 4pm ET beginning September 6

Roseanne, Seasons Four - Eight

Monday through Sunday at 5pm ET beginning September 1

Who's The Boss, Season Three - Six

Monday through Sunday at 11am -12pm, 4-5pm ET beginning September 1

The Cosby Show, Season Eight

Weekdays 2 -3pm and 6-7pm ET beginning September 1
Weekends 1-2 pm and 6-7pm ET beginning September 6

Maude, Season Five - Six

Weekends at 8am and 2:30pm ET beginning September 1

Facts of Life, Season Four - Six

Weekends at 8am and 2:3opm ET beginning September 1

That's it folks. That's all you're getting. Enjoy it while you can.

y2k3Joker

If they show season five & six of MAUDE, I'll be very happy. That's all I need.

Season four to six of Facts of Life is a welcome addition as well (even though it's only on the weekend).

On another note, I figured out how to get the CTS Network (it was available only with a certain theme pack on BEV) so I'm looking forward to getting some more "Facts" episodes off that channel plus those missing episodes of "The Hogan Family" that I need. But if they take it off after Christmas, there probably won't be enough time to air all 110 episodes (and most of the episodes I need are from the 2nd half of the series).

Great News about Maude though:D Thanks again for the update!

I discovered the same thing when I checked it out. Which means the press release is saying one thing but the schedule is saying something else, which is so typical of the Global/Canwest group. You'll just have to keep watching and see what happens. Things may change at any time.
