View Full Version : Should there ever be "EMPTY SHELVES" inside of a store?
TVFactFan 08-02-2008, 03:59 PM I mean how frustrating is it to have your mind set on something you want and you get to the store and it's all gone? Which leads me to this question
What were the managers in store doing when that particular product was RUNNING OUT?-lol
Hollow 08-02-2008, 04:07 PM well they have to wait for the items to be delivered before they can restock, don't they?
TVFactFan 08-02-2008, 04:09 PM well they have to wait for the items to be delivered before they can restock, don't they?
But don't you do that when it's halfway gone?-lol
Not completely gone, WE NEED MORE STOCK CLERKS!!!!!
InspectorExstead 08-02-2008, 06:56 PM the more popular the item, then usually they re-order before it's all completely sold out.
Zoneboy 08-02-2008, 07:06 PM Unless the product is on sale, Wouldn't it be just as easy to go to another store and try finding the item there?
robyrob 08-02-2008, 07:43 PM when I go grocery shopping i want to go to ONE store and get it over with...
my local store is horrible for empty or understocked shelves and having shelves filled with items with past due "sell before" dates on them - and when you point it out to a manager, the next time i see them, the items have the "MANAGER'S SPECIAL" tags on them, I saw some packages of cheese strings in there a couple days ago with a "sell before" date of June 28th on them.

I normally do all my shopping at one store but if they're out of stock on a sale item then I'll go to the next location and try to find it there. There are 6 stores within a 4 mile radius of me so it's not like it's out of the way.

I thought there was a law of some kind that required stores to remove an item from it's shelves once it had reached or exceeded the expiration date. Those cheese strings you saw had no business being on the shelf that long after the sell by date. Speaking of sell by dates, One thing I can't stand is these companies that put it in a damn code that you need a rosetta stone decipher.
theshark8777 08-02-2008, 08:17 PM There are actually only a few things that are illegal to sell after the sell by date. At least in Ohio, cause there are salvage grocery stores popping up all over around here.

We had a salvage store that was selling Campbells soup by the case (24) and the management took a permanent marker and marked through the expiration dates on each can. That place didn't stay in business long after that.
theshark8777 08-02-2008, 08:31 PM well the whole point of a salvage store is to sell expired things, so idk why theyd change the dates lol.

They didn't change the dates, They marked through the originals. I can't speak for Ohio but here in NC such practices don't set too well with the health dept.

Not always. But I just think it looks bad to have a empty shelf in a store, poor management

I see your point but if the store is out of stock and can't get more until the next truck arrives then what more can you do? This happens quite frequently around here if an item is on sale or if bad weather is imminent. When that happens, All the stores are flogged by people trying to stock up especially on bread and milk.

Have a note posted where the empty shelf is saying something. just having it empty shows the store is not being ran the right way

If an item is out of stock and the shelves are empty because of it then the stores around here will usually have a sign letting customers know when more will become available. If a sale-priced item is out of stock then I just get a rain check and get it later.
Brieannas21 08-02-2008, 09:21 PM I doubt that a store has time to go around and post notes on everything that they are out of stock on. Most of the time stores restock at night or early mornings since that's when they get their trucks in. If they are out then there isn't anything that the store manager can do about it.

This Jello I like in my local market was EMPTY for a month-lol I thought the manager's job was to walk around and see what was LOW in stock or have a stock clerk doing it so it can be re-ordered

They have time especially if it's a popular or sale-priced item. It beats having to answer questions from people wanting to know when more will be available. I was a stock clerk once and trust me, It's more convenient to have a sign letting them know.

So what exactly is the store manager's role?-lol

If a store is out of stock on an item for that length of time then it usually means that the product has been discontinued or the store is no longer carrying it due to poor sales.

Their job is to manage the employees and other things, they aren't in control of ordering merchandise, That is why stores have Department Managers, their the people who are in control of ordering merchandise.
I can see if it was like a popular video game or movie that is out of stock then the manager will post a sign. But if it's an ordinary thing then they aren't going to go around and post signs.

I don't think that was it because the Jello was back yesterday. It hadn't been there since late June

Ok, Another reason why a store might be out of a product for awhile is because the manufacturer might be changing the packaging. This happened to me when I couldn't find Boston Market mac and cheese. I had to wait nearly 2 months simply because the packaging was being changed.

Everything was the same, the packaging and all, they just don't care about restocking certain products
Jude The Obscure 08-02-2008, 11:32 PM Solomon, there is also the possibility that the warehouse/distribution center for the store is out of stock. It is always so easy to blame the managers for every little problem you encounter, but try working on the other side of retail and see how fast your attitude changes. You will have more respect for what we in the retail business have to put up with every day!

Well I have to blame somebody because I went to this market every friday for 6 weeks and they didn't have that Jello like and finally the first friday in August it reappears.
Solomon, some of your rants and raves are pretty strange

Wouldn't it be easier if you called ahead and asked if they had gotten the Jello in yet? At least you wouldn't have to waste a trip down to the store.

Well the store is a block from my house so I would just stop in and see if they had the Jello In. It was along the route to my house so it wasn't like I was going out of my way

Solomon, maybe you should post your OWN note in there next time, telling them you are holding the Jell-O hostage until they restock your favorite cereal or something.

Well yesterday I found out that I can get groceries delivered by going online, minimum $50, and $10 delivery fee so I don't think I will be going in that pathetic market anymore

That sounds like a Kroger store.
