View Full Version : First season Urkel teasers
Daffyfan2004 07-30-2008, 12:00 PM Here's something that's been on my mind. I've noticed that for syndication (and on ABC Family) there are four episodes that have teasers featuring Steve Urkel. I read that this was done to make it look like Urkel was there from the start. However, my question is 'where did these scenes come from originally?' They couldn't have been shown when these episodes originally aired because Urkel wasn't on the show at that point. Were they deleted scenes from later episodes? If anybody has any info on this let me know.
JulieSomoski 07-30-2008, 01:53 PM From my understanding, the scenes were obviously not in the episodes when they originally aired on ABC. But since Jaleel was added to the cast at the start of season 2, they wanted it to appear to viewers that he was part of the cast from the start of the show, so they taped those seasons sometime during the second season, and added them in when the show went into sydication. They probably did this just so casual viewers wouldn't get confused.

Kind of like I was confused about the Tags scens with Chrissy from Three's Company-lol But I really don't know why they had to make it seem like he was there from the start. I'm confused by that a little.
Lorimar Television 07-31-2008, 02:59 AM I dont think they were taped in the 2nd season. They all look like they did in the first season.

Didn't Jaleel joined the cast in the middle of the first season???
Lorimar Television 07-31-2008, 09:46 PM Yes he did
PrettyinPink55 07-31-2008, 09:55 PM Didn't Jaleel joined the cast in the middle of the first season???
That's what I thought too.
FrankCostanza 08-01-2008, 01:10 AM I think it is incredibly moronic when ABC and apparently other networks add teasers with Urkel to the first 11 eps before he was introduced. He was only missing from 11 eps. He was pretty much there from the start anyways.
They do it so as not to confuse the viewers? What??? Yeah, I can really see someone tune in to this show and see Urkel in a Season 2 or 3 ep and then watch one of the first few eps from Season 1 and then panic because Steve Urkel was not in it.
You know what will really confuse the viewers? Showing the first 11 eps with Urkel in the teasers and then airing Episode 12 from Season 1 where no one in the family seems to RECOGNIZE Steve Urkel.
Damn these networks piss me off. True fans of these classic sitcoms like us here on these boards should be in charge of programming. If we were in charge then there would be no misplaced teasers, no awkaward cuts to commercial, no scenes cut out for time and for goodness sake NO AIRING OUT OF ORDER!
Sorry, lost my temper for a bit there. Yeah, FM is great on N@N, eh?
Daffyfan2004 08-06-2008, 07:33 AM I guess I see what you mean. It is a little strange that the family knows Urkel early on. Then they're introduced to him in season 12, sort of like Scooter appearing on early episodes of 'The Muppet Show,' but not actually being introduced until episode 6. I guess those teasers aren't really necessary. If a viewer is new to the show, they should realize that Urkel came later on. Then again, there are people who mainly watch the show to see Urkel, so I can see it from both points of view. I'd write more, but I have to get to work now.
DSfan 08-06-2008, 02:27 PM To try not to confuse us! Well that makes sense as their little tricks have made us even more confused lol.
I just wish things would never be changed. Channels should just always air the original cuts, unedited and air commercials where the commercials are supposed to go, not chop it all up and make a totally different show.
This just popped into my head so I'm going to say it, who else is pissed that TBS is butchering (is that a word?) so many theme songs! SBTB no more has words and last about 10 sec, Fresh Prince is the same, that is so annoying to me. Especially, when looking at these shows on other channels the themes are intact. TV deals should say something about not screwing with the shows. I realize that doesn't apply with the urkel thing with the teasers

Come on, the Fresh Prince Theme Song is like 3 min and I'm glad TBS chopped it down.
Wreckless 08-06-2008, 08:40 PM I'm not, it has the best theme song. It doesn't need to be .20 seconds long. It doesn't even have the words, it's the worst. TBS cuts so much out too, worst TV station for syndication. Don't get me wrong- I'm glad they air what they air- but the constant editing and messing shows up is uncalled for in my opinion.
Lorimar Television 08-07-2008, 05:17 PM Wow it is? Thats weird.
Furienna 08-09-2008, 07:26 PM Once again, I'm grateful I live in Sweden. We have no weird editings here in Europe. We always get to see the whole episodes, uncut and unabridged.

How many times are you going to remind us here in the U.S.? Your made yourself clear already, WE GET IT!!!!
Furienna 08-09-2008, 07:33 PM Because I just can't get over that the American networks do that. It's so stupid.
Lorimar Television 08-10-2008, 02:08 AM Furienna, do you know what the cold open is in the eps Rachels First Date, cause ABC Family played one where Steve tricked Carl outta his sundae, and the one in Mr. Badwrench, they played the one where Steve takes the garbage out for Laura, and in False Arrest, they play one where Eddie helps Steve lift weights, and in Body Damage, they play one where Steve takes a bath with his duck? Also do you know what eps use those there?
Daffyfan2004 08-10-2008, 08:07 AM What I wonder is whether or not those episodes began with actual teasers when they originally aired.
Furienna 08-10-2008, 09:28 AM I love Steve, but I still think it's wrong to make it seem like he was in those first dozen episodes, when he hadn't been introduced yet.

Do you know the eps cold open I just asked?!
Lorimar Television 08-10-2008, 12:48 PM You guys, I found a foreign airing of Marriage 101 on youtube. It has unaired scenes and the original ending theme. It has a scene that Ive never seen on any network where Steve runs in class, afraid to get a tardy, and gets attatched to a roll down map on the board.

Furienna 08-10-2008, 02:22 PM I remember that scene! Poor Steve!
About those first season episodes, I have to get back to you on that one.
Lorimar Television 08-11-2008, 01:29 AM OK
Daffyfan2004 08-11-2008, 04:02 PM I know what you mean. I saw ABCFamily's version of that ep on YouTube recently and after watching that one I sort of thought something was missing.
JulieSomoski 08-11-2008, 06:16 PM I'm not sure if they were taped during the first season or at the end of the first season - all I know is that they weren't there originally. And did Jaleel even join the cast during the middle of the first season? I know he was in the episode when he goes out on a date with Laura (his first episode), but was he in more episodes after that? I'm really familiar with the first season.
Lorimar Television 08-11-2008, 11:11 PM Yes, after that ep he was in them all
Furienna 08-12-2008, 06:22 AM Yeah, even if it only was one scene, he was in every episode after that.
ThomasE 08-12-2008, 09:41 AM What I wonder is whether or not those episodes began with actual teasers when they originally aired.
I can vouch for the episode when Eddie is teaching Steve how to lift weights. That did air back in early 1990 during that Buddy Goodrich episode. I have it on tape from ABC's TGIF. That ice cream sundae segment also did air during the original broadcast as well.

I don't remember Steve being in the Buddy Goodrich episode. Someone should post that on youtube LOL
ThomasE 08-12-2008, 05:04 PM The Urkel Teaser aired as the beginning of the Buddy Goodrich episode.

WOW, great find.
I've been downloading episodes from torrents and I've found a few that have no sound(came off some local UPN affiliate somewhere). The ones off ABC Family have sound however. Annoying, and you have no clue which ones are which until you can watch them.

Wow that's bizarre! Urkel wasnt intoduced yet, so why would they do that?

hey, do you think you could please upload them to youtube?! Does it have the wonderful world intro?
ThomasE 08-12-2008, 10:21 PM Oh, no. The singer Jessie Frederick for Full House and Fam Matters is singing the theme. I would have to find the tape. I know what it looks like but I have tapes in two different states.

To make it seem like he always was there.

He's talking about the original airing. Steve wasnt even KNOWN then. Are you sure those werent repeats cuz im pretty sure What a Wonnderful World was used until AT LEAST ep 4!
Furienna 08-13-2008, 08:52 AM It can't have been the original airing, because Steve wasn't introduced until the 13th episode, I believe.
Lorimar Television 08-13-2008, 05:58 PM Yes thats what I was saying. He was introduced in ep 12.
