View Full Version : Will Smith: 'I have an open marriage'
waichingliu81 07-17-2008, 06:53 AM Wednesday, July 16 2008, 12:04 BST
By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter
Will Smith has disclosed that he and wife Jada Pinkett Smith often talk about having sex with other people.
Smith, who earlier admitted that divorce wasn't an option for the couple, told Reveal that an open relationship is good for their marriage.
He said: "Our perspective is, you don't avoid what's natural and you're going to be attracted to people.
"And if it came down to it, then one would say to the other: 'Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now, I'm not going to if you don't approve of it'."
Smith suggested that his marriage would survive a permitted affair because of his and wife Jada's honesty.
He commented: "In our marriage vows, we didn't say 'forsaking all others'. We said 'you will never hear I did something afterwards'. Because if that happens the relationship is destroyed."

Yeah Will, we'll see how much Jada doesn't believe in divorce when you're caught by the papperazzi with some young hottie.
;)

 yeah, i wondered about that too. i mean, unless he gets caught with his pants down- and literatelly- he probably thinks that it is ok to sleep around. but isn't marriage about two people not just in love with one another but its about being faithful and trustworthy and not doing things behind each others backs? so in this sense, with our Will there is no way!

I think the Scientology is starting to cloud Will's judgement.

hangin' out with tom cruise seems to affect will's mind, not to mention inject some insanity too

I think so too!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

well, for some people it still possible to remain happy and live life as they do without the need of getting married to someone else. but when you are in a relationship with someone, you just cannot break whatever vows you have made together and have sex with whoever you feel like it. that is known as being unfaithful.
btw thanks pretty in pink and monika! :)
Janice 07-17-2008, 06:26 PM Unless I see Smith saying this on tape, I'm not buying it. Sounds like a misquote or something taken way out of context. I hope so anyway. I like them as a couple, and I would find that disappointing.

I really like them as a couple too! I was hoping they would be one of those marriages to prove that not all Hollywood marriages are doomed!

It was also said Jada and Will are Bi-sexual-lol It was on the radio
Brieannas21 07-17-2008, 06:57 PM I remember him saying this on Oprah like in the late 90's early 2000.
At least they are honest with each other. I would rather for you to tell me then to sneak and do it behind my back.
PrettyinPink55 07-17-2008, 07:03 PM At least they are honest with each other. I would rather for you to tell me then to sneak and do it behind my back.
Good point!!
Janice 07-17-2008, 07:38 PM Open marriage, swingers, call it what you want. It's sex outside your marriage, which to me is disgusting.
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 08:15 PM If you are going to have sex with multiple people or people outside of your marriage, THEN WHY BOTHER GETTING MARRIED? I have just lost what respect I had for those two people. Get a divorce and then have sex with whoever you want.

I don't think they have actually done anything on the side. I know on Oprah he stated that he had a crush on Beyonce and he told Jada about his crush. I think that their openness is their honesty. He and Jada have talked about this on Oprah a few times in the past years.
Not saying that I approve of it, but I can understand what they are saying.
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 08:29 PM I remember that interview and those comments. We are human to have fantasies. And that is what I interpreted Will's comments to be. I have fantasies abt John Travolta. But still, I don't get why it seems this whole supposed fantasy talk has been upped to actually the two of them wanting to be with other people. I just find that disgusting. Even if they have not actually gone outside of their marriage for sex, the mere fact they state that in some interview means they are willing to do it.

To me it's like, if I could and I told you, would you mind (hope that makes sense) LOL. I highly doubt that he would step out on Jada and vise versa. The media can take something that you have said and they can change it around or make a person sound real stupid.
Like I said in my other post, tell me first. I hate a liar, anyone who knows me, know that the one thing that I can't stand is a liar.
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 08:50 PM I can't speak for anyone else, but I have NEVER ever spoken with my boyfriend abt having sex with someone else or who would he want to be with, hypothetical scenarios, etc. It has just never come up simply out of respect. He has never said, "I find that woman attractive" or anything that implies sex on any level.
Wasn't there an article where some false things were said that Will said a while back?
I hope this article is wrong too, but if Will did say those things, I find that so disrespectful. Why would you tell the media anything abt stepping out of your marriage, even if it hasn't happened yet?
Brieannas21 07-17-2008, 08:54 PM I can't speak for anyone else, but I have NEVER ever spoken with my boyfriend abt having sex with someone else or who would he want to be with, hypothetical scenarios, etc. It has just never come up simply out of respect. I not going to lie, my husband and I have talked about it, but they were all celebs. So I'm pretty sure that we will never ever in a million years get the chance

The thing with Will and Jada though is, THEY ARE CELEBS and they hang out with other CELEBS and they have thoughts abt being with these fellow CELEBS. Their chances are pretty darn good.
Brieannas21 07-17-2008, 09:10 PM

Yeah but, if I were Will or Jada I would see that as sleeping with a fellow co-worker LOL and I wouldn't want to take that chance.
But I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping with someone else other than my husband.
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 09:12 PM Co-workers or not, if one is married, there shouldn't be an open marriage. Like I said, if you want to have mutliple partners or not be in an monogamous relationship, don't get married.
TVFactFan 07-17-2008, 10:58 PM I knew Jada was a FREAK-lol
PlayOn 07-18-2008, 01:28 AM hate to break up this Rachael/Monica moment, ladies. but let me say this: (lol. just kidding. ;))
if this is true, (which i pray it isn't) will and jada have lost all sanity. first they convert to a religion that worships Invader Zim and now they say this. Janice is right. it's adultery. plan and simple. weather the partner knows about it or not.
don't slam bam thank you ma'am a person then go sleep with your spouse, whom you made a promise to in front of God (or Invader Zim in this case.) elliot spitzer and bill clinton probably have this kind of marriage, tho. lol.

i remembered that will did sue some website for printing that he was a sympathiser to hitler when he wasn't, after he was being misquoted. if will did say he and jada agreed to sleep with other people, then well, that is dissapointing. plus, i think we seem to forget one thing: the fact that will and jada are indeed parents and have kids of their own.
you wonder how the kids would feel about their own mother and father sleeping with other people
LoveMrsG 07-18-2008, 09:52 AM If you are going to have sex with multiple people or people outside of your marriage, THEN WHY BOTHER GETTING MARRIED? I have just lost what respect I had for those two people. Get a divorce and then have sex with whoever you want.
Amen, Ireneparalegal!!! You said it! Why bother taking vows and entering into a relationship that is supposed to be a COMMITMENT to a certain person if you're not going to commit to that one person? H*ll, they should've just remained boyfriend/girlfriend and left it at the "we're seeing other people" stage or something! The way I was raised, marriage is a commitment two people make solely to each other for the rest of their lives and whether or not the other person knows about it, it's still infidelity in my book. And besides which, who in their right mind would want to have an "open marriage" anyway??? "You will not find out about it later" or whatever they said in their vows is just ridiculous, and it's definitely not a commitment, or not one worthy of the word "marriage" anyway. I'm a bit disgusted. I thought Will and Jada were above all this Hollywood BS. I was really hoping they'd be one of the couples to beat the inevitable Hollywood marriage disaster but after this piece of news, I'm not holding my breath.
LoveMrsG 07-18-2008, 10:07 AM Another thing I'd like to add...if I were married and my husband came up to me and started talking this "open marriage" crap, it wouldn't be long until I'd be carried off to jail 'cause I'd send a bullet right up his...oh, never mind!

That's exactly what I was saying!!! I thought they would be one of those marriages to prove that not all Hollywood marriages are doomed.

Open Marriage means swinging, meaning that they both will KNOW the outside people they are having sex with, not them individually going out to find someone to sleep with
coffield3 07-18-2008, 12:45 PM Good grief, are there any normal people left in Hollywood??
catlover79 07-18-2008, 02:02 PM Good grief, are there any normal people left in Hollywood??
They're becoming fewer and farther between.
Ireneparalegal 07-18-2008, 03:24 PM Good grief, are there any normal people left in Hollywood??
I hope this article is false, just like that one article that claimed Will defended Adolf Hitler, or whatever that crap was. I really hope this is false. However, if it isn't, I have already posted on my EXAMPLES OF REAL CELEBRITY MARRIAGES thread that Will and Jada are no longer a good example.
Ireneparalegal 07-18-2008, 03:26 PM Open Marriage means swinging, meaning that they both will KNOW the outside people they are having sex with, not them individually going out to find someone to sleep with
Call it what you want Solomon, being married means having a commitment. If people want to swing, cheat, have sex with others, have group sex, etc. than go ahead, but don't be married, what is the point? Marriage = monogamy. That is why I despise people like Alex Rodriguez who get married but decide to cheat at the first opportunity a stripper throws themselves at him. Fidelity and monogamy is what separates us from the animals.
dawsongirl 07-18-2008, 04:01 PM Open marriage, swingers, call it what you want. It's sex outside your marriage, which to me is disgusting.
I completely agree.
PunkyP0WER 07-18-2008, 04:04 PM you said it irene. people justify these sexual exploits too much. trying to act like its the in/now/normal/healthy thing to do in their marriage.
if a person enjoys casual sex with a number of different people with out strings attached then by all means go for it. but like you all said, whats the point of being married?
marriage is making a commitment to one person and exclusively being intimate with them.
dawsongirl 07-18-2008, 04:05 PM first they convert to a religion that worships Invader Zim
 I love that.
LoveMrsG 07-18-2008, 04:18 PM Swinger marriages...good Lord! Just what the heck DO scientologists believe anyway??? Shoot, no wonder the relationship between Tom and Katie bombed out! LOL But seriously, Hollywood shouldn't be a part of the U.S.; it should be declared a different planet entirely because 99.9% of the folks there (or the celebs anyway) sure aren't living on planet earth!
This whole "open marriage" thing is the ultimate "get out of jail free" card for Will.
If he ever gets caught with another woman - because you know those guys with the cameras who follow celebs around are everywhere now - all he has to say is "Jada said it was okay!"
I'm not sure though. Jada doesn't look like the type of girl who would be so darn gung ho about the open marriage if hubby Will got caught in public fooling around.
LoveMrsG 07-18-2008, 05:03 PM This whole "open marriage" thing is the ultimate "get out of jail free" card for Will.
Well said!!! Personally if he ever does get caught fooling around with another woman, I hope Jada uses some of the moves she did on "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" and kicks him in a certain strategic area. LOL!
Ireneparalegal 07-18-2008, 05:13 PM I'm not sure though. Jada doesn't look like the type of girl who would be so darn gung ho about the open marriage if hubby Will got caught in public fooling around.
That is the feeling I get abt her. Jada seems to be the type to say, "That's MY man! Keep your skanky hands to yourself." I can see her beating down some broad.
They both were on Oprah though and it seemed more like fantasy talk, the fact he found Beyonce so beautiful and something to the effect that if Jada were not around (meaning if she had not been in Will's life) he would have pursued that bootylicious. It did not sound like they were talking abt cheating. Then again, who knows. Maybe that is their thing, to have other lovers. It is not my thing and it certainly as hell is not my boyfriend's thing. He knows what he has with me. ;)

Years ago I heard on the radio a supposed quote from Jada saying pretty much the same thing, and if I remember correctly the quote made it clear the Jada used the "open marriage" benefits too.
Brieannas21 07-18-2008, 06:19 PM Open Marriage means swinging, meaning that they both will KNOW the outside people they are having sex with, not them individually going out to find someone to sleep with
To me Swinging means when one couple has sex with another couple at the same time. Open marriage means when someone person in the marriage goes out and have sex with another person alone, but your partner knows about it.
Schmoopie 07-19-2008, 03:57 AM First of all, that article about Jada and Will is just disgusting. I can't believe him saying something like that, unless he was trying to be funny (which it wasn't), but it makes him look really, really bad.
And just for the record, I've been very happily married for 12 years...
Andrea
