NEW YORK - A man claims that he was nearly cut when he found a knife baked into the bun of a cold-cut 12-inch sandwich he bought at a Subway restaurant in New York City.
John Agnesini said he knew his lunch didn't taste right. The 27-year-old says he was horrified to find a 7-inch serrated blade in the bread.
Agnesini said it was protruding into the half of the sandwich he was about to start chomping on and that it "could've slashed" the side of his mouth.
Instead, he said he fell ill with "severe stomach issues" for hours after eating. He attributes it to food poisoning from the embedded blade.
Subway restaurants spokesman Kevin Kane said food safety and customer comments are taken "very seriously" and that the company is "investigating the facts."
PunkyP0WER 07-17-2008, 12:10 AM is this a version of a finger in the chilli?
PrettyinPink55 07-17-2008, 12:12 AM Yikes!!!
And I just had Subway for lunch today!!!!!! LOL!!!
Zoneboy 07-17-2008, 12:14 AM A 7-inch knife in a 6-inch sandwich? How in the hell does one not notice that?
He would also probably have to bite down really hard to get any metal from the knife into his mouth
If it were baked into the bread then the person preparing the sandwich should've seen it when it was cut in half.
Too many holes here to make this believeable.

Apparently he got ill from the handle, The original article made it seem like it was from the blade itself.

You think this is another hoax?
Zoneboy 07-17-2008, 09:22 AM You think this is another hoax?
Let's just say that it sounds highly suspicious.
Lodee 07-17-2008, 01:17 PM I don't believe it either. And how would the handle make him sick? The high temp from baking the bread would kill any germs wouldn't it?
Chocoholic 07-17-2008, 03:51 PM I think this is a hoax myself.
Yooch 07-17-2008, 03:56 PM two words...chili finger.
Exactly. That's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this story.
TripperFan 07-17-2008, 04:30 PM PFFFT!
That's nothing! I got a hack saw in my Starbuck's Non-Fat Latte last week.
Ya gotta come up with better than a 7" blade these days! ;)
Zoneboy 07-17-2008, 04:41 PM When a sub is being made the employee doing so has their hands all over that bun. When the order is given the bun is sliced on one side while being held on the other. How anyone could have missed it at this stage is beyond me.
There's always the chance that the knife used to slice the bun was the one allegedly found in the sandwich which would mean that the employee accidentally? left it there and the handle melted during the toasting process if he indeed ordered it that way.
Finally, The sub is cut in half, rolled up in paper then placed in a bag and again the employee's hands are all over it so how can it go through these stages and not be noticed?
One final thought for now, As you can see in the video he's got his hands all over the knife, I wonder if his are the only fingerprints on it?
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 04:55 PM My niece used to work at Subways and since I enjoy eating at Subways, seeing how they make those sandwiches, cutting the bread, etc. I find this story unbelievable. No way.
How much you wanna bet he used to work at Subways or he knows someone who worked at Subway and the knife came into play like that.

If this was legit, then there wouldn't even be fingerprints as any Subway I've ever been to, they always where plastic "gloves" while making the food.
Yep - sounds like a crock to me.

Not necessarily, You're correct that gloves are normally used when making the sandwich but the employees at the Subways around here use their barehand when slicing the bread although a gloved one is used to hold the bun while doing so.
The reason is because there's a chance that the plastic could cause the knife to slip thus causing injury or at least that's what we were told when I worked for them. Also, Since Subway is franchised, The store owners can set their own rules. Some may require that anyone handling food and utensils wear gloves on both hands and others may require them when handling food only.

Now that you mention it, I think that's how they do it here too - then put the bun down and glove the other hand before adding the toppings.
Well, so much for that theory! ;)

My cousin is a manager of a Subway restaurant and yeah I'm not buying this story either
Zoneboy 07-17-2008, 09:30 PM According to the article the sandwich was 12 inches, not 6 inches. I don't know if the story is true or not.
Agnesini said it was protruding into the half of the sandwich he was about to start chomping on and that it "could've slashed" the side of his mouth.
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 09:34 PM Yes, even if it was a foot long sandwich, when it is cut in half, that leaves two 6 inch sandwiches. If the knife is 7 inches, that means one inch was protruding out one end of the sandwich...UNBELIEVABLE. Also, there is no way someone could have cut that sandwich down the middle and NOT have come into contact with that knife somehow. The only person who could be that precise would be someone who knows how to handle samurai swords.

That came to my mind as I was posting but I thought the samurai sword reference would be as funny.

That's true, they do always cut them in half.

Has to be a magician or illusionist since how do you cut a 7" inch knife into two 6" lengths without it being noticed.
It's GOT to be a pile of .......
Zoneboy 07-17-2008, 10:39 PM http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e211/zoneboy/subway.gif
How hot would an oven have to get for the knife handle to melt this much? If the oven was set to a higher temperature than normal then probably not long at all but wouldn't the bread have been burnt by that time also?
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 10:40 PM  The whole thing reeks of manure.

A Sidney family wins $40,000 over urine-tainted food
SIDNEY — A Sidney police officer and his family have won $40,000 from a restaurant that had served them food tainted by an employee’s spit and urine.
In the lawsuit filed last year in Cheyenne County District Court, officer Keith Andrew and his wife said a Taco Bell employee urinated and spit in food served to them and their children in October 2005.
The lawsuit named North Platte-based Mid Plains Food and Lodging, owner of the KFC/Taco Bell.
A call to the company seeking comment on Monday was not immediately returned.
In the lawsuit, the couple said their two sons, 4 and 7 at the time, took sick after they ate the food. The 4-year-old came “violently ill,” the lawsuit said, with gastroenteritis and dehydration. He vomited for hours and was forced to spend time in a hospital.
Managers of the restaurant were aware of the contamination at the time the Andrew family was eating but didn’t inform the family, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit also suggested the family was the victim of a scheme that targeted police officers.
“Employees maintained ’special servings’ of food reserved for ... officers,” the lawsuit said. “The ’special servings’ had been urinated in or spit in by KFC/Taco Bell employees. In fact, defendant’s employees maintained a particular serving pan for use in creating ’special servings’ of food plus employee urine.”
An attorney for the family, Andy Snyder of Scottsbluff, said the verdict did not specify exactly how the jury believed the restaurant was negligent.
Management knew of rumors that food was being tainted and heard employees joke about it but took no disciplinary action, Snyder said Monday.
He also said the restaurant did a poor job of vetting its employees.
“I’d advise them to get a better class of employees,” Snyder said.
After hearing all of this makes one rethink going out to eat
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 11:24 PM With AIDs and Hepatitis C, can you imagine if someone who was sick with those diseases did that to food?
