View Full Version : This thread is for the people who are TERRIFIED of roller coasters
TVFactFan 07-01-2008, 03:22 PM My question to you is did your friends get mad at you because you didn;t want to get on certain rides??
I can't tell you how many times I was about to fight one of my friends because of statements like-"what did you even come here for if you are not going to get on anything?"
Any other people who don;t like getting on roller coasters have friends who tried to make them feel bad for not getting on rides??
PunkyP0WER 07-01-2008, 03:30 PM my best friend used to be like that - terrified of most rides and it was hard for me to understand. and i admit i would get annoyed but i never tried to force her. but now i understand how she felt - as i've gotten older i'm not too keen on amusement park rides anymore. when i went to las vegas i got on a roller coaster for the fisrt time in years and was absolutely terrified (and not in a fun way) i can honestly say i won't be going to amusement parks anytime soon.

See I never understood the annoyance because they could have just said-"well forget you we are going to ride" and I would have been like-"ok see ya later"
But to get frowned up and said-"why even come here? I was ready to fight
EmoJoe 07-01-2008, 03:39 PM i used to be afraid of roller coasters except for little ones, but i went on two huge ones in Six Flags last year and i CONQUERED my fear, and loved both of them. :woohoo:
InspectorExstead 07-01-2008, 03:59 PM *raises hand* i'm deathly afraid of roller coasters. my best friend and i went to six flags a year and a half ago and i honestly thought i would be able to get on some rides. i basically started freaking out in the parking lot when i saw how huuuuge they were! i went on viper (after about a half an hour of my bf convincing me i wouldn't die). it wasn't that bad! my eyes were closed for the most part though (when i opened them, i was upside down!). i tried to get on another ride, riddlers, but i chickened out last minute. and then it rained and we got to home! yay! lol.
but viper was a lot of fun, even though i was terrified. i'm thinking of going back this summer and really conquering my fear.

well, i was a 13 year old then and as most teenagers i had the mentality the world revolves around me.
catlover79 07-01-2008, 04:07 PM I've only been on one roller coaster and that was enough for me!! My sister is even more terrified of heights. Once at Six Flags, our brother and her boyfriend (now husband) tried to get her to go with them on one, but she refused.
TVFactFan 07-01-2008, 04:17 PM I got on this Roller coaster called the Comet and I had chest pains the day after
Nighthawk76 07-01-2008, 04:19 PM I'm scared of roller coasters, especially the ones that turn upside down.
EmoJoe 07-01-2008, 04:28 PM I got on this Roller coaster called the Comet and I had chest pains the day after
is that the one in Hershey Park? i went on that roller coaster too.
Cactus Jack 07-01-2008, 04:32 PM is that the one in Hershey Park? i went on that roller coaster too.
What was the one your freinds dared you to go on? Somehow I remember you mentioning that
I am nervous or scared about most amusement park rides, including Splash
Mountain and Space Mountain at Walt Disney World.
BarneyFife 07-01-2008, 04:42 PM I've never been afraid of any ride, even as a kid growing up. And i would never try to make anyone ride a ride that he/she doesn't wanna ride. It's their choice. I did once ride this Farris Wheel type ride. As the Farris Wheel went around, you were in this cage that was also going around (turning you upside down), and some how i hurt my hand trying to hold on. I've never rode that ride again.
dawsongirl 07-01-2008, 05:43 PM I don't think my friends got mad at me, but they probably thought I was a dork or something. Too bad; I seriously hate roller coasters and fast rides.
TVFactFan 07-01-2008, 06:45 PM is that the one in Hershey Park? i went on that roller coaster too.
Yup, Hershey Park-"the underrated Amusement Park"
LuLu Rogers 07-01-2008, 07:02 PM The first time I rode one, I was terrified. It was the Georgia Scorcher at Six Flags, about 11 stories tall and hits 54mph.
I rode it again later and realized it wasn't so bad, now I enjoy riding them. :)
Janice 07-01-2008, 07:07 PM I loved coasters as a teen and half my 20s, but I wouldn't go on one now if someone paid me. Anything that looks like it's defying gravity isn't for me. I hate to sound morbid, but I read a terribly sad roller coaster story the other day. A teen was on the ground, and went into a restricted area to retrieve his hat, and he was struck by the moving coaster and was decapitated. This happened at Six Flags in Georgia.

I saw that on the news, seems like something tragic is always happening at six flags
Mr. Television 07-01-2008, 07:16 PM To this date I have never been up in a big roller coaster. I was on a few kiddie ones but that's all. I have asthma and the thought of losing my breath up there was something I never wanted to chance. My days of amusement park rides are over now anyway. In 2003 I went to Hershey and got on a couple big rides and my back almost went out. Never again. lol
phoebe7165 07-01-2008, 07:20 PM Yup, Hershey Park-"the underrated Amusement Park"
I haven't been to Hershey Park since I was kid!!
I don't know why I feel the need to post on Solomon's thread when my post is the total opposite from the thread title!!
Sorry, but I absolutely LOVE roller coasters!! I think the most brutal coaster I ever went on was the Texas Giant in Six Flags near Dallas. It's a wooden rollercoaster, and I remember thinking it's only a wooden, it's not going to be so bad. OMG!!!!! Looks were deceiving!!
I really want to get up to Cedar Point in OH some day. They have the most rollercoasters of any park. I'm going to SoCal at the end of the year. Even though we're staying in Anaheim, I don't really feel like going to Disneyland because I already live near Disney World. Still deciding whether to go to Knott's or Magic Mountain. Maybe both!!
Funny thing is while I love rollercoasters, I don't really like all the other rides!! Anybody ever been on that ride that looks like a UFO? I think they're mostly at carnivals. You go inside it, you stand with your back against the wall, it starts spinning and you're pinned up against the wall. Then the walls slide up and you're up off the ground. I went on that thing years ago and that was the last time!!:puke:
Céline 07-01-2008, 07:31 PM I'm never liked big roller coasters specially the ones that get upside down.I'm exactly like your friend.Well,I'm glad that you don't force him or her to do it.Yes people made fun of me because I couldn't go on the big rides.I can tell you that it's not cool at all,I was very sad and I was feeling bad.You see,it's not our fault, there are people who easially ride those roller coasters with no problem at all but, there're others who trully can't because they are too scared or like me they get really sick.I'm sure that you don't want your friend to get sick or feel bad so,keep respecting her decision and everything will be fine. There's many other rides on the amusement's park that you can enjoy together and you both will have alot of fun too.
EmoJoe 07-01-2008, 07:38 PM Yup, Hershey Park-"the underrated Amusement Park"
i used to go to Hershey all the time and i loved that roller coaster, for some reason it didnt bother me. i guess i was only aftaid of the upside down ones.
and Jack, im not sure of what you're referring to, maybe Superman in Six Flags?

oy. i know what ride you're talking about! my school holds an event once a year where tons of foster kids come & volunteers can hang out with them and go on some amusement rides that are on the football field. one of the rides was that one and the girl i was hanging out for the day really wanted to go on it. so i went with her. i had a terrible headache after & was so nauseous. and to top it off, there were no seat belts so i thought i would die any minute while i was in the air & turning. lol.
YoliUSA 07-01-2008, 09:48 PM I've always been scared of roller coasters :(. Every time I go to an amusement park I plan to face my fears and ride one of the fast ones, but I end up riding the slow rides because I feel safer.
I'm going to WDW next year and I really want to ride some of the newer wilder rides, like Expedition Everest and Mission:Space. M:S scares me a bit, because I've heard some people have died after riding it and one of my friends told me she almost passed out during the ride, but they have a slower, less intense version now.
OH Nuts! 07-01-2008, 09:50 PM I don't like roller coasters either. They creep me out. But I did like the Tilt-A-Whirl. Don't know what rides I'd go on these days- probably the milder ones. I'm not much into BIG adrenaline jolts these days.
Ireneparalegal 07-01-2008, 10:17 PM I got on this Roller coaster called the Comet and I had chest pains the day after
You get a lot of chest pains. I'd get that checked out if I were you. ;)

yeah...i went on it twice and my skin and muscles hurt afterwards from how fast it was.
i'm not scared of rollercoasters, i just the way they jerk you around and such. they would probably be fun if it weren't for that. not all of them are like that though, space mountain at disneyworld was great.

Yes, after i realized my hand was hurt it seemed like it took forever for the ride to end. It was like i was riding in slow motion. Terrible ride!

That kid jumped over two six foot fences, and not for nothing, beyond all the signs (and again, 2 six foot fences) it must have been pretty freaking obvious that this monster ride was right on top of him.
Not to be insensitive, but it is just beyond comprehension that he could be that foolish.

I did, it came from the Roller Coaster-lol
I didn't have pain before the Comet-lol

Yes, I saw that on the news as well. The park spokeswoman mentioned that there were many warning signs posted there, and the kid went anyway. He was old enough to know better - it's not the park's fault.

He could have just bought a new hat. That happened to me years ago when my hat flew off when going down on a roller coaster and I had to move on with my life-lol

At least you were smart enough not to go after it, Sol.

I wanted to so bad but my friends said just forget it and enjoy the rest of the day.
BarneyFife 07-02-2008, 12:37 AM Back in 1993 here in Nashville we had this State Fair worker get killed trying to dodge a ride to "pick up loose change" that fell out of the riders pockets. It's pretty sad you don't make enough money, so you risk your life doing something stupid like that.

Exactly. A hat (if that is indeed the case) is not something to lose your head over...LITERALLY.

Yeah, Darwin Award for sure. Must have been some hat. I'm so bad.

Indeed. It's not worth it, kids!!
sunshinefizzy 07-02-2008, 12:39 PM I don't like rollercoasters. To be honest with you I hate amusement parks all together. Most of the kids I grew up with loved them. I can do certain water rides, I loved splash mountain as a kid at Disney and I went on the train rollercoaster they have there (no way in hell I'd do it now). I hate Ferris Wheels, too.

I've never liked to go to amusement parks myself. They are so large, loud, crowded and flashy. When I was a kid, a traveling carnival came to our town a few times. I liked that better because I lived right behind where they set up the carnival. I felt much more comfortable that way.
JulieSomoski 07-02-2008, 02:16 PM I love roller coasters. Every summer we go to Cedar Point (were were just there a couple weeks ago, actually) and I love it. If you love roller coasters, that's the place to go to.
dlemond 07-02-2008, 08:29 PM Yeah, Darwin Award for sure. Must have been some hat. I'm so bad.
To be fair, it was a magic hat. Take it from someone who knows.

So you can see why the kid might have been upset by losing it.
Nothing to lose your head over though.
(Now that is bad. I am ashamed.)
catlover79 07-02-2008, 08:47 PM   :brent What about this pic? THIS is a magic hat!!
catlover79 07-02-2008, 08:48 PM How about this guy and his hat?? ;)
theshark8777 07-02-2008, 09:25 PM Cedar Point man, no point going if you don't ride coasters.
I used to hate them tho, until my girlfriend drug me on the Magnum, after that I loved them and will ride any of them pretty much.
robyrob 07-04-2008, 06:39 PM http://www.offbeatearth.com/blue-flash-homemade-roller-coaster/
i hate rollercoasters, I really dont see the logic in waiting three hours for 2 minutes of discomfort. last rollercoaster i was on was Son of Beast and i ended up with three cracked ribs from the secure bar.
Fleet 07-04-2008, 09:11 PM I never liked them.
I prefer slower, but more interesting rides, like Disneyland's Pirates of the Carribean and the Haunted Mansion rides.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― An international exchange student working down at the Jersey Shore succumbed to injuries he sustained after being struck by a rollercoaster on the boardwalk.
The Casino Pier closed its gates on Seaside Heights boardwalk for several hours Thursday to mourn the death of pier ride operator Stanlislav Dragnev of Bulgaria.
Dragnev, 21, was one of 54 exchange students working there this summer. He died Wednesday, after being struck by Star Jet rollercoaster Sunday.
Investigators say Dragnev went into a restricted area and stood up between the tracks when he was struck from behind.
It was Dragnev's first summer working at Casino Pier; officials say it was the 21 year old Bulgarian exchange students' kindness toward others that cost him his life.
He was trying to retrieve a child's baseball cap that had fallen off during the ride.
"To bring your kids here and a tragedy like that happens. It reminds you that life is so short," said Staci Grogan of Forked River.
Pier owners brought in a chaplain, and grief counselors who speak Bulgarian to comfort co-workers, as well as trained therapy dogs Orville & Wilbur.
"They are there to provide some affection, some times if one can't reach out to human being reach out to animal, animals are very intuitive to sorrow," said casino pier spokeswoman Marylou Halvorsen.
In Bulgarian tradition, friends will place flowers where Dragnev was struck, and no music will be played on the pier today. Star Jet roller coaster meets all safety requirements by state ride inspectors who continue to investigate.
Out of respect, the coaster will remain closed until Saturday.
