View Full Version : Joan in Kay Kyser film-Around the World
Steverino 06-29-2008, 01:59 AM This is my first post-Hope you're all doing well. If this has been discussed, please advise:
Joan was in the 1943 RKO pic AROUND THE WORLD starring 40s bandleader Kay Kyser. I thought they worked well together and Joan was very good. Quite a bit of physical humor for Joan, and the action got a little rough. She also played off costars Mischa Auer, comic team Carney & Brown and Marcy McGuire (kind of a female Mickey Rooney, but a fine singer) well. The Kyser band was great as usual. Anybody see this? Not bad at all. Comes on TCM occasionally..
Steverino 06-30-2008, 05:05 PM Well, two days and no responses. Obviously not much interest. Guess I'll be movin' on...
Ireneparalegal 06-30-2008, 05:11 PM I MARRIED JOAN is not a show I see on any of the channels I get through my cable company. I know a few here do have that luxury of watching IMJ. This board is not very active because of that. I am sure if the episodes were being shown, we would have more input on this board.
I recall watching IMJ a very long time ago. I can't remember the episodes very well. I think I may have to buy the DVD's.
Your input on these boards is appreciated. ;)
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 06:41 PM You're gonna have to be more patient on these boards, Steverino. With shows that are not in active syndication or particularly well known among today's viewers, you just won't see much a response. But if you are a fan of IMJ and want to discuss more, please, stick around. I would love to talk more about Joan Davis.
Mr. Television 06-30-2008, 06:58 PM I used to like IMJ but I haven't seen it since the early 80s when it was on CBN. My memory isn't very good when it comes to it although I remember I liked it.

Oh yeah, CBN, I was trying to remember what channel it aired on. That is when I was watching it.

They had IMJ, Jack Benny, Life of Riley, George Burns, Love That Bob and many others ....I wish a channel would air a lineup like that again. I used to go to sleep watching them.

Exactly!! Oh God, what a great line-up that was. :D And it made for some entertaining evenings. I wish it were around.
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 07:37 PM Why Pat Robertson sold the channel is still one of the dumbest things ever done. (yea, he may have done it to fund evangelism), but still don't we need an outlet that shows good clean fun shows?

Yea you got that right. That channel had so many great shows. I remember on Saturdays it was western day and not Gunsmoke and Bonanza but rarely seen westerns too. I remember during the week they had classic shows too and of course late at night was their rarely seen 50's shows. They were TV Land before TV Land....and they sold out too. :(
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 08:11 PM It was because of CBN Cable, that I saw a lot of old shows for the first time--besides the forementioned, there was also The Patty Duke Show, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Hazel, etc.

I think The Doris Day Show was even on it. That's the last time I ever saw it.
Also one of my favorites but short lived shows was Crazy Like a Fox and they aired that too.
Ireneparalegal 06-30-2008, 08:15 PM Damn, I had forgotten abt those other shows it aired. What we wouldn't give to have another channel like that.
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 08:17 PM Yep Doris :D Psssst.......check her out on DVD, Sonny :)
Also Hardcastle and McCormick.
But getting back to topic--I wonder how many episodes CBN had of I Married Joan? The public domain collections seem rather limited since there must be lack of a master source for the majority of the episodes. It is sad if this series has been lost to neglect.
Steverino 06-30-2008, 08:42 PM Thanks Jude86- I appreciate the pep talk. The thread's already off on another tangent, so i'm barking up the wrong tree.
Ireneparalegal 06-30-2008, 08:45 PM Steverino, threads tend to go "off-topic" don't let it discourage you from making another in the future.
Steverino 06-30-2008, 08:49 PM Thanks Irene. Will keep that in mind.
honeybea 07-01-2008, 10:04 AM I love this show. It's on my ION channel in the mornings. They don't have too many shows, but I can watch them over and over. I think I Love Lucy's character was patterned after Joan's.
Jude The Obscure 07-06-2008, 10:28 PM So Steverino, what is about Joan that you love? :)
Ireneparalegal 07-06-2008, 10:56 PM I love this show. It's on my ION channel in the mornings. They don't have too many shows, but I can watch them over and over. I think I Love Lucy's character was patterned after Joan's.
No, Joan was patterned AFTER Lucy. I Love Lucy began in 1951. Joan debuted in 1952.
Jude The Obscure 07-06-2008, 11:01 PM Not to mention Lucy was based on her character Liz from the radio program "My Favorite Husband"--created by Jess Oppenheimer (the same guy behind I Love Lucy).
Ireneparalegal 07-06-2008, 11:03 PM Not to mention Lucy was based on her character Liz from the radio program "My Favorite Husband"--created by Jess Oppenheimer (the same guy behind I Love Lucy).
Exactly. A radio show that had a great following for some time before the debut of Lucy.
Steverino 07-07-2008, 10:30 AM What do I love about Joan?? 'Love' is a bit strong, but i always thought her character made the show. I dont think it was as much an ensemble group as in 'Lucy".
As a small kid of about 5 when I recall seeing 'IMJ', I think of the a capella voices singing the theme song. Something about it creeped me out. It sounded eerie to me then, tho it doesnt really now...
Jude The Obscure 07-07-2008, 11:16 AM I found her to be funny and the comparisons to Lucy are not fair. She has her own style. People often blindly put the two in the same category under "scatterbrained", but I don't think either character were scatterbrained. Gracie Allen--yes......But Joan and Lucy were both smart characters who sometimes did foolish naive things......that's just my take.
Steverino 07-07-2008, 04:56 PM Good point.
