Asing someone to help you move is helping you move boxes and furniture into a TRUCK, not

Come over and HELP YOU PACK-lol

If I was Martin and Elvin I would have been out of that place so fast

 I heard that.

I will never forget one time (over 15 years ago) this couple invited us over for menudo. This is a mexican soup that takes some time to prepare and cook. Well, we arrived at 6 p.m. and SHE HADN'T EVEN STARTED PREPARING IT YET! Guess what? She left to have her nails done before their trip to Las Vegas, so I ended up preparing and cooking the soup. I was so damn hungry and looking forward to eating not cooking. NEVER AGAIN!

Elvin was so damm passive in this episode as a man he should have told Sondra-

"LOOK, CALL ME WHEN YOUR FRIENDS ARE DONE PACKING BECAUSE MY PLAN WAS TO HELP THEM MOVE OUT NOT PACK AND MOVE OUT"

I love Elvin but I can't see him saying that. Maybe the Elvin that I remember from the early episodes but not this one. Sondra would have eaten him up had he said it early or later episodes.

Elvin would never have said that, not even in the early episodes. He might have said some stuff about men and women, that came out the wrong way, since Sondra was sensitive about that stuff. But he always loved Sondra, and if she told him to do something, he did it!

Ireneparalegal

Elvin was a whimp bottom line. What he should have said and what he actually did were two different things. That is why Sondra loved him so. ;) She could never have someone be her equal, that would be too much head-butting.

Not to get too far off topic, but not only was Elvin a whimp, he and for that matter, Sondra were shameless mooches. They used their children to mooch off her parents; get a better apartment, moved in with them, got them to co-sign a loan for a house and then Elvin tried to get Cliff to sell them his car at what was apparently a ridiculously low offer. Didn't this clown ever go to his parents for anything?

May I add, I never ever understood why the characters of Elvin and Sondra were written to have children so soon after getting married when they both had goals to attend law school and medical school respectively? Why would any couple in their right mind do that knowing the schooling that awaits them? Don't even get me started on that whole camping store storyline. Idiots!!!! I know it was all abt adding more storylines to the show by having a pregnancy, twins, etc. But still I can't tell you how much that really bugged me abt the show.

Yeah, it does seem like Elvin's parents were mostly let off the hook, while Sondra's parents had to help them all the time. Maybe the Tibidauxs weren't as rich as Cliff and Claire, but still... Yeah, that was weird...

Well, I got the impression, that Cliff and Claire didn't go to med school or law school until they got married either. Cliff and Claire got married after they had completed a four-year college education, just like Sondra and Elvin did. I always figured that, at least on many TV shows, like this one and "7th Heaven", going to graduate school was considered an occupation, just like having a full time job would have been. So while you were supposed to still be unmarried during your college years, you could be married, and have kids, when you became a graduate student. And when Sondra started applying to Law School a year or so after her twins were born, it was just like when many mothers go back to work a year or two after childbirth. But yeah, if you go to a fine college like Princeton, starting a camping store is just a waste of your fine education. But I think there's a thread about it somewhere, where we discussed that.

Ireneparalegal

I am aware of that thread regarding that whole discussion.

It is not impossible to do just that (have kids then go to graduate school) but seeing as how Sondra and Elvin were having a hard time as newlyweds, why take that further by having children so soon? It is just my feeling they could have waited. I guess someone will come along and say, "It was not a planned pregnancy." If so, fine, you can't change those circumstances. But seeing that Bill Cosby was pro-education, I would think the message he would want to deliver would be to GET YOUR EDUCATION, ESTABLISH YOURSELF and then have a family who can enjoy the fruits of that hard work. Seeing that the topic was being mentioned abt how the Huxtables were being the ones who seemed to help out Sondra and Elvin all the time, I felt it was staying on topic by adding they would not have needed so much help by her parents had they put off having children.

That happened to me where a friend asked me and my roommate to help him move. Well he had nothing packed and I mean nothing packed. On top of that he did not even offer to take anyone to lunch. I was pissed as well as my roommate was to a point of turning our anger on each other. If you are going to asked someone to help you move have your things packed. People have busy lives. HELLO!!!

One time he and Sondra got into a fight so he came to Cliff and Claire's and said his parents weren't home.

Elgin and sandra were crazy, but allthechildren on the show were a bit off.
Vanessa couldn't decide whether or not to get married. Theo couldn't stay out of the house. Denise can't even be explained.
What's worse was they found people just as crazy as themselves to date.
Elgin was wierd , dabnis seemed crazy. Martin had to be psycho because his first wife was just like denise . Why would he want to repeat that.

Rudy seemed ok, but olivia was a smartmouth could you imagine her as a teenager. I bet cliff would be on medication

Au contraire, CWDogg, Martin's first wife was smarter, more mature, and more focused than Denise and she definitely knew what she wanted out of her life. The only problem was that it didn't jibe with what her parents wanted.

Well, we have to remember that this is Bill Cosby's show, so obviously, Cliff and Clair are going to be used more often than Elvin's parents.

But why did she have to listen to her parents then? Why didn't she just do what she wanted? Why did she get married and have a child before she was ready for it? That just seems weird to me.

Well they could have shown his parents atleast once

Well they could have shown his parents at least once

Actually, Elvin's parents appeared together thrice, believe it or not. They first appeared together when Sondra gave birth to the twins. They then appeared when Sondra and Elvin went to a dinner party at her parents' house and Sondra brooded over the fact that she was stuck taking care of the twins while Elvin was in medical school. Finally, they last appeared together when the Huxtables held a Thanksgiving dinner and Clair kept sending Cliff out in the rain to get last minute groceries that he kept forgetting to get. Elvin's mom also made a solo appearance when Sondra got strep throat and she and Clair insisted on babysitting the twins to keep them from getting sick.

Maybe she was afraid that if she didn't follow their wishes they would cut her off.

Furienna
09-24-2009, 09:06 AM
Yeah, but whatever the reason behind it was, it didn't make her more mature than Denise. A mature adult wouldn't let their parents decide what they should do, if they really want to do something else.

I'd still be next to Cliff on the couch watching the football game and eating the hoagies. I love how he didn't budge. But yes, exactly. Moving is hard enough yourself. To drag just some friends into it is ridiculous. I've moved twice in the past 5 years and was extremely grateful for the help we did have from family and friends which was solely moving boxes from the home to the truck. And guys help for moving heavy furniture. I'm glad somebody brought this up. I just saw this episode and was thinking about this.

And, what I thought was weird is that Elvin's parents weren't at the housewarming party. I know it was later in the show, but they did have them appear earlier in the show as was already said. I really didn't like when Elvin took Cliff's car. I was done with him after that. And, he was making it out like it was an old car, but wouldn't the car he took have been the station wagon that we saw Cliff with Theo purchase in an earlier episode of the series?
