1. the first season was in black and white; and the rest of the seasons were in color.

3. I think it was in the 2nd season, but just somewhat at first. But, from what I remember (haven't seen it in years) Sgt. Carter was Gomers friend every once in a while in the first season. I remember seeing a scene in a black-and-white episode once on TV LAND, where Carter came out of someones office and Pyle was doing something, and Carter smiled and patted him on the shoulder. And once there was a color episode where Carter had Pyle transfered to the paratroops to "get him out of his hair". But then, he found out it was hazardous, felt sorry for Pyle, and tried to get him back.
