View Full Version : Did they ever catch the Boston mall rapist? unsolvedmysteriesfan 05-25-2008, 01:09 PM http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/525/punkmz7.jpg He raped his victims on Dec 24, 1989, and Dec 27, 1989. synthisislab 05-25-2008, 01:15 PM Does anyone know the statute of limitations on rape or if there is one? unsolvedmysteriesfan 05-25-2008, 01:23 PM I don't know, but the women should be able to administer punishment to that monster imho. justins5256 05-25-2008, 03:14 PM To my knowledge, he was never apprehended. I also seem to recall reading that no rapes have been attributed to this specific offender since the first time the show was broadcast. This raises an interesting mystery in and of itself. Why did he stop? Perhaps he went to jail for another crime, died suddenly, or became otherwise incapacitated. It's also possible that he saw the UM segment and decided to hang it up entirely, or he relocated to another area to continue his crimes. Mystery Lover 05-26-2008, 12:49 AM I don't remember this case at all. And since I live in Massachusetts I would think that I'd remember it if I did. Anyone else have any other info on this case? Like what mall? Just curious.... unsolvedmysteriesfan 05-26-2008, 02:04 AM I don't remember this case at all. And since I live in Massachusetts I would think that I'd remember it if I did. Anyone else have any other info on this case? Like what mall? Just curious.... Just do a search on here for Boston mall rapist. You'll find it. And on some other site we can't mention here, they have the segment. hovaslash 05-27-2008, 07:49 AM FYI In the state of Massachusetts the statute of limitations is 15 years on sexual assault. synthisislab 05-27-2008, 02:17 PM So then are these crimes unprosecutable at this point even if they did catch him? hovaslash 05-28-2008, 07:45 AM They may be unfortunately.....unless there is a loophole that a more litigious mind is aware of. mphs95 05-28-2008, 09:15 AM If the statue of limitations expired, and I'm sure it did, then unfortunately, even if the SOB is caught for the Boston rapes, nothing can be done but a civil suit by the vics. There is no way this dude stopped after Boston. Either he changed his city of choice, became disabled (hopefully maimed in the groin area), went to jail, and or died. marlins3 01-31-2010, 09:37 AM Assuming this is the same guy.... http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/22142875/detail.html sdb4884 01-31-2010, 10:36 AM Assuming this is the same guy.... http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/22142875/detail.html Doesn't sound like the same guy, same area yes and same sort of name but this guy raped his victims in the store/building they worked in. unidentified 02-11-2010, 08:33 PM He could have changed anytime he felt like it. The segment (from what I remember) mentioned that he always stuck to malls that were easily accessible from the Interstate. All he had to do was change Interstate or state and continue his activities. Mastermind 02-11-2010, 11:43 PM He could have changed anytime he felt like it. The segment (from what I remember) mentioned that he always stuck to malls that were easily accessible from the Interstate. All he had to do was change Interstate or state and continue his activities. Not as easy as it sounds. Remember like anyone else he probably has a job an other responsibilities. He can;t go too far. The police probably have the feelers for other rapes. Any serial rapist that occured in another jurisdiction would be referenced to these rapes. unidentified 02-12-2010, 12:07 PM Not as easy as it sounds. Any serial rapist that occured in another jurisdiction would be referenced to these rapes. Difficult to say, obviously the re-enactments didn't go into those details... The actor in the re-enactment though looked totally different to the sketch which was odd. It's hard to make a comparison, but the actor looked extremely cold and heartless but also looked like he was a businessman and UM mentioned the suspect always was well dressed in fancy suits. If he was a businessman it may not have been so difficult to move state and work elsewhere (if he did actually have a job). The videos mentioned when the guy got into the store he was looking clothing for his wife, this may have been true or he simply made it up, but I find it hard to believe that guy was married. I know the actor and the sketch don't match, but the behaviours of the actor seems to depict a man who is probably single, or if he is at all married looks like he would possibly also beats his wife and kids - he doesn't seem like the married type. Mastermind 02-12-2010, 03:44 PM he doesn't seem like the married type. Neither did the BTK serial killer. Blackout 07-25-2010, 03:44 AM what a sick guy XCalibur 07-25-2010, 05:30 PM Hopefully he's either dead or in jail for another crime. That he can't be convicted now is a joke. There should be no statute of limitations for any felony IMO, especially rape or murder. Thats garbage. DarkDante 10-17-2010, 04:37 PM Something worth noting the sketches of the Strip Mall Rapist on the NBC broadcast and the Lifetime syndications don't match. wiseguy182 12-13-2010, 01:36 AM Something that really struck me was that nobody ever came into the clothing store on the Dec 27 attack. The Dec 24 I can more understand because it was near closing time and all of the appointments were apparently gone, but the clothing store is another story, and he appeared to be in there for quite some time. I definitely feel that he cased the place prior to, the segment mentioned he targeted stores with attractive females. Unfortunately, we dont' know anything about all of the other places he hit. Now if he cased the place, I feel that he would have been sitting out in his car for awhile, watching to see the traffic for the stores and for the area in general. I feel the key to solving this would have been getting a car description/license plate number, because I do feel he was sitting in his car for awhile, casing the place. Unfortunately, the various composite sketches never lead anywhere. Daddybeagle 05-24-2017, 06:09 PM Even with DNA evidence? Stack was very clear that they have it, most states have no limit if so. macbeth06 05-25-2017, 05:20 AM I think that this became the i70 killer . LakeForestPI 05-25-2017, 08:03 AM I think that this became the i70 killer . :rotflmao: macbeth06 05-25-2017, 01:38 PM I honestly think that he became the i70 killer because they both were never caught and both did there crimes at strip malls. JM 05-25-2017, 04:27 PM I think that's really unlikely, honestly. Guys like this typically have an MO and they stick to it and attempt to recreate it each time. They have the fantasy in their mind and they keep repeating it. The I-70 Killer did not rape, he was simply out to murder. The Boston Area Rapist only raped and did not kill. I think he either moved away to a different area and continued the behavior or stopped for fear of being caught. He might've been arrested on something unrelated and has been serving a prison term for that. Could be anywhere, really. Daddybeagle 05-25-2017, 04:54 PM To my knowledge, he was never apprehended. I was a rape crisis responder for 10 years, and can state pretty confidently that this kind of monster almost never stops unless killed, incapacitated, or captured. In fact, there's almost no such thing as a one time "sex offender". I have a feeling he isn't dead. Welcome! As a citizen who has also went through rape crisis responder training-- I agree with you wholeheartedly. There are obviously exceptions to everything, but I believe generally that you are correct. Axl Rose 05-25-2017, 08:27 PM I think that this became the i70 killer . he must've went on the atkins diet. Daddybeagle 05-25-2017, 08:31 PM Hey, thanks for the welcome, and also for your efforts as a colleague; I was in Washington State, now in AZ. This case really haunted me and still does, I intend to post a much more detailed post of my thoughts over the weekend. Take care :) Daddybeagle 05-25-2017, 08:33 PM Welcome! As a citizen who has also went through rape crisis responder training-- I agree with you wholeheartedly. See above, I'm still figuring this thing out. macbeth06 05-26-2017, 02:10 PM he must've went on the atkins diet. Lol Daddybeagle 05-29-2017, 11:16 PM Okay, as I promised, based on my experience both as a private investigator and as a rape crisis responder, what follows is what I have in mind. But before I go any further, I would like to start by honoring and paying my respects to the survivors of this criminal's horrific rampage, as well as to those here and in the Boston area law enforcement, emergency medical, and sexual assault response agencies who have done so much to ease the suffering of all affected persons (both primary and secondary survivors) and for your efforts to bring the monster responsible to justice. This is my take on a case that has haunted me ever since the original telecast. Beginning with the offender himself, his actions, dress, choices of crime locations, how he maintained control once in an establishment, etc all say things about him. Some have suggested that he has a law enforcement background/training; corrections and security are other possibilities. Since the reports stated that there is no indication of his being intoxicated in any way, and he kept total control over his victims, even committing two rapes in one instance, I think training and experience is certain. His extremely calm but menacing demeanor also points in that direction. Was he terminated from one of the above professions? If so, is this what set him off? Given his choices of places to strike as well as conditions presented, such as holiday and business traffic, it's agreed that he had access to a vehicle, probably one that wouldn't stand out. But is it his own? Company or corporate? A rental? If the latter, a record would exist somewhere at the time. Could it still exist? I see that some here are skeptical that he was employed. However, I believe that his choices of expensive suits, the type of firearm used (357 Magnum was claimed), and even the hours he struck are indicative that he had an income apart from his crimes. He may well have been leading a double life; committing these outrages while "on the clock" is certainly not out of the question. If this is in fact the case, was he some kind of business owner, traveling salesman or representative? A middle or higher corporate executive? I know from experience (retail management) and education (criminal justice) that the latter's ranks are full of psycho/sociopaths. Whatever the case, he developed a routine that succeeded, which shows a high degree of self discipline. In all probability, he would be considered legally "sane", odd as it sounds. I have wondered why all the established crime scenes didn't involve sexual assaults. Since he scoped out and chose businesses where he expected to find attractive women, even wearing Obsession For Men and being very clean and polished, what made him decide not to rape at a given site? Was there some flaw in his sursurveillance technique? Or, were some crimes done on impulse with less preparation? All the known offenses began the day before Christmas in 1989, starting with the rape at the medical office, on what I would consider Christmas Eve. The rampage continued into January 1990 before he suddenly stopped. Is the Christmas/ New Year season significant, and if so why? It was pointed out that traffic at 4 pm on 12/24 would have been very heavy, especially in and around a crowded shopping area with a large parking lot. Because this could severely hamper escape, why take the risk unless he had a solid way out? And, if stopped by law enforcement, what was the plan? A badge of his own would most likely take care of this, at which point he had only to get on the freeway, and disappear. Or, did he live nearby instead? In this case, even if he lived with someone, it would be unlikely to arouse anyone's suspicions for him to go out at these times. As well, if he did have an intimate partner (a surprising number of these offenders do), it now makes sense for him to try to hide the paunch. In fact, it was said that he took great pains to do so; my bet is that there is something about it such as a distinctive scar or tattoo which would unmask him if the right person was watching the show and remembered it. Since there were no further incidents reported in the Boston area once UM aired the segment, he almost certainly watched the show. Was he spooked and afraid someone might put 2 and 2 together and make that critical call? Is there someone out there who even now might remember watching it with someone who had an odd reaction to the story but did nothing for whatever reasons? If so, who? I have always felt that there is one or more people who either know who this criminal is, had valid suspicions, or knows something crucial whether they realized it or not. I say again, as a trained responder I know that these losers very seldom stop their crimes on their own volition. Something has to happen to make them cease and desist. Out of all those hurt so terribly, "Julie", the 18 year old survivor from Hit or Miss especially got to me. I have spent many sleepless hours thinking of her and her manager who was also hurt that day. If you guys are reading this, please know that you haven't been forgotten, and that many including me are still out here on your sides. |
