View Full Version : Willona's nickname for Michael
Jason Steele 05-19-2008, 02:02 AM I am a huge GT fan, and this has always driven me crazy: Why did Wilona call Michael "Gramms"? They never explained this, and it went on in every season.
Any insight?
Thanks
Jason
Ireneparalegal 05-19-2008, 02:04 AM It was Gramps.
BTW, it was a nickname my late brother's friend also went by.
Jude The Obscure 05-19-2008, 02:06 AM I never understood the nickname myself.
Ireneparalegal 05-19-2008, 02:08 AM It was never stated why she called him that. I guess just a term of endearment in some way.
Brieannas21 05-19-2008, 02:09 AM I think she called him that because he was very mature for his age, he had an old soul.
TVFactFan 05-19-2008, 07:47 PM I never understood the nickname myself.
Maybe they explained it on CBS and not in syndication-lol I would have liked an explanation myself

Add it to your research plate. ;)
Craftman would know since he knows GT unedited.

I would have liked an explanation too. The first time Willona calls Michael Gramps is in the 'Black jesus' ep, and from my DVD's I never heard why she called him that.
Ireneparalegal 05-19-2008, 08:37 PM There it is. You heard it from the expert. ;) There was no explanation given.
Really, there was no need to give one. "Gramps" is somewhat a common nickname in certain communities to call someone. Brieannas said it best above. Michael was very mature for his age and the nickname fit him. Like I said, my brother had a friend whom we called "Gramps" and it was because his friends said he was more mature than the rest of them and he would talk to them like he was a grandpa.

Keep in mind that a CBS verson can be a lot different from a DVD version-lol

I thought it was said here many times that the Columbia House tapes were just like the CBS episodes.

I want a CBS broadcast version over a Columbia House-lol
Ireneparalegal 05-23-2008, 12:42 AM I want a CBS broadcast version over a Columbia House-lol
Well that isn't going to happen. I mean, unless someone here recorded the show, they will have to post here. So far in the three years that I have been here and the time you have been here, has anyone ever stated they have the CBS shows on tape?
Besides, GT couldn't give an explanation for everything. That is crazy talk. You either know what something means or you don't. I am sure the word "gramps" is prevalent in the black community since this was a black family. I looked up the word and it says someone who is mature and wise.

But as you would tell us, "That doesn't mean you have all the episodes, therefore it doesn't answer the question." ;)
No one - since I have been here - has ever told us they have ALL the CBS episodes. What good is a few if you are wanting an answer to a question?
I don't ever recall Willona or anyone else giving an explanation for his nickname. Because THERE WAS NO NEED FOR AN EXPLANATION. ;)

I always thought that it was self explanatory, like you said there was no need for an explanation
Ireneparalegal 05-26-2008, 11:52 PM I always thought that it was self explanatory, like you said there was no need for an explanation
It was. If GT had to explain everything (or any show for that matter) there wouldn't be enough time to get to the storyline.

Well I was talking about when I was a child. I remember now knowing why the hell Willona kept callinh him gramps at the age of 11-lol
Ireneparalegal 05-27-2008, 12:30 AM Maybe they explained it on CBS and not in syndication-lol I would have liked an explanation myself
You did not state above, "When I was 6 years old I did not understand the word and I would have liked an explanation."
If you knew NOW, what does it matter if you did not know THEN? That makes no sense.

Crap, you bet me to it

I read your mind. ;)
TVFactFan 05-27-2008, 12:37 AM I didn't start the thread and I agreed with the OP about when I didn't know what gramps meant either.
why the hell would i be talking about now?
Ireneparalegal 05-27-2008, 12:41 AM The OP has no idea TO THIS DAY why he was called GRAMPS. Understandable. Not all people do. You then posted you would have liked an explanation too. That comment tells us you did not know and wanted CBS to explain it. After I stated what it meant and that it was never explained in the show you still went on to mention wanting proof from the CBS episodes, not the Columbia House versions, which are UNEDITED. You kept the thread going by stating that.

FOR THE OP to know i threw in the CBS statement to be funny, why the hell would I need to know now? I know what the Hell it means now. I said it would have been nice to know then. U thought I was trying to figure the sh*t out as a 32 year old man?
Ireneparalegal 05-27-2008, 12:55 AM If you knew already, why do you care whether there was an explanation or not? On the DS thread you were saying how you knew all the pop up information already so why bother showing facts YOU ALREADY KNEW?
Same here, why do you care? No explanation was given. And in your original post you did not state, "When I was 6 years old..."

Why the F*K do you have to turn everything into a debate? I was just joining in with the poster saying I felt that way at one time, so please leave me hell alone. Getting so sick of your constant nitpicking for no reason. Why can't you just have FUN conversation? That's why the hell I was doing when I mention CBS, it was serious. You out of all people should know that
Ireneparalegal 05-27-2008, 01:07 AM Well I was talking about when I was a child. I remember now knowing why the hell Willona kept callinh him gramps at the age of 11-lol
Chill out dude.
You posted this^^^^. I was responding to Brie and then you posted the above. If you didn't want to continue with this topic why then did you post? You say it's fun, well it is fun until you get all bent out of shape over something we always do. How many times have you, Brie and I have chatted this way and you make a joke out of it? You are mad but there is no reason to be. I think you just got mad because you made it a point to mention you already knew the answer and I quoted your post where you did not say that.
Get over it already and just forget abt it.

I didn't understand why you were trying to catch me in some kind of trap. Like we were debating r something, i just assumed anyone would know I was talkingabout years ago. I was just playing around when I said CBS gave an explanation
Brieannas21 05-27-2008, 01:17 AM I didn't understand why you were trying to catch me in some kind of trap. Like we were debating r something, i just assumed anyone would know I was talkingabout years ago. I was just playing around when I said CBS gave an explanation
Because reading what you wrote, it sound like you were serious. To me it did
AND I'M NOT "TAG TEAMING" ANY ONE I'M JUST RESPONDING TO A POST

You assume. No one is trying to catch you in any trap. And don't assume we all knew you meant when you were 6 years old.
TVFactFan 05-27-2008, 01:22 AM haven't yall been knowing me long enough to know if it's something about Good Times I want to know, I post about it?-lol
example, my post yesterday on the Jeffersons board about the Statue in the season 1 and 2 opening credits
Ireneparalegal 05-27-2008, 01:25 AM So then you are saying you wanted to know the meaning of Gramps?
TVFactFan 05-27-2008, 01:28 AM So then you are saying you wanted to know the meaning of Gramps?
No I was saying to the OP i can relate because at one time I wanted to know too. Anything I don't know I post about like-"who was rona barret? I eventually found out after posting
Brieannas21 05-27-2008, 01:29 AM Can we just call this a misunderstanding, because this thread is going around in circles LOL
TVFactFan 05-27-2008, 01:32 AM Yes, and one last thing, in the future if it's something I don't know I start my own thread asking the question
Scoobiedoo30 05-27-2008, 01:47 AM what did Gramps stand for
