I was anxious to watch the sixth season of "Bewitched" on DVD. Because to be honest, I never saw Dick Sargent episodes ever since I became a fan of the show. So even though I love Dick York's Darrin, I was still ready to watch and like the Sargent episodes.

However, in watching the episodes, I find myself having to watch some Dick York episodes mixed in with the Dick Sargents. I need the real Darrin. :)

That's funny, Adam. I'm about halfway through season six now. My plan is to start over with season 1 and go through the show again--hopefully by that time, season 7 will be announced!

I plan on waiting for the last two seasons to be released. Then I'll watch the show from the beginning and watch them all in order. Though it may be unbearable to watch all those Dick Sargent's in a row, lol. Like I don't mind watching an episode or two with Dick Sargent, but it's when I'm watching a bunch in a row that I have to break it up with some Dick York.

I LOVE the first two seasons. In fact my two favorite episodes are from the very first season. "A Is for Aardvark" and "Love Is Blind." And just for the record, I prefer the first two seasons in black and white.

Even though I'm not planning on buying any more seasons (I still think the show should've ended after Season 5), I might check Season 6 out of the library. This is no knock on Mr. Sargent - I liked him in other roles, but Dick York WAS Darrin. I'm just not a fan of the DS era, mainly because the show was growing stale, EM looked bored and scripts were being recycled like crazy. I'm also watching the show from the beginning again - I'm starting Season 2, and I'm on the ep where Endora zaps Darrin into thinking he's pregnant. "I DEMAND your pickle!!"

That's funny, I watched that episode the other day.

Darrin: "Well he WASN'T eating it!"

As far as shows on DVD goes for me, personally, I have to have it all. I take the good and take the bad. I take them both and there I have... No, I'm not going to sing "The Facts of Life", lol. But my older sister can buy just seasons she likes of shows and that drives me crazy. If I was that way, I may have also stopped at season five.

A couple of days after Season 2 was released, I took the DVDs over to a friend's house and we had a Bewitched party, complete with pizza, pop and chips. There were 5 of us, and that was one of the episodes we watched. "Speak the Truth" is one of my all-time fave Bewitched episodes, and to watch it with a group of people was so much fun!! We were all . "The Magic Cabin" is also dear to my heart as it is the episode that got me hooked on Bewitched. Plus, Darrin's insurance agent, "Fred Hinkle", shares his name with my late grandfather. "What Every Young Man Should Know" ranks up there with "A Is For Aardvark" as a classic Samantha/Darrin romantic episode. There's just something about the first two seasons that wasn't there later on...they were just magical, with less actual magic. Does that make sense?? :D

I'm grateful for the DVD releases. I wasn't a fan until I bought the DVDs. I pretty much get all the shows from the 1960s on DVD, and bought "Bewitched" season one. It was so funny and I loved the chemistry between York and Montgomery. Plus I love the original Gladys Kravitz. The second one seemed just like a villain to Samantha. The original was a nice woman who was just freaked out by the weird goings-on at the Stephens' house.

I had seen bits of this show on Nick at Nite years ago, but like I say, it was the DVDs that made me a fan. I was also out to get the black and white versions of seasons one and two. I got season one fine enough. But it took me a month or so to find the black and white season two. Because all the stores seemed to have only the color versions.

^ When I became hooked on Bewitched several years ago, it wasn't through DVDs or TV Land - one of the local stations showed the reruns every weekday morning, and I'd watch (and record!) as I got ready for work. Sometimes I'd also watch the reruns of The Addams Family and Green Acres that followed.

I still need to get season 6 I don't mind the Dick Sargent era and I love Sam's 2nd pregnancy and her Yoo Hoo maid. I was born in 62 but don't remember watching the show until the '70-'71 season. I use to watch reruns every weekday during the 70's and 80's. I agree with you about Gladys, I loved the original she even babysat Tabitha. The 2nd Gladys was an enemy, I couldn't stand her.

From what I've read, they were going to replace the Kravitz's after Alice Pearce's death. It was because they didn't want to lose George Tobias that they decided to simply recast the role of Gladys.

I liked Abner, don't get me wrong. But I would have preferred they get new neighbors to replace both of the Kravitzes, rather than recast Gladys. I wouldn't have minded if Sandra Gould played the new neighbor, I just don't like different actors playing the same character. I guess I would HATE the soap operas, lol.

I understand that it was a different story with Darrin. They couldn't just get rid of the character. But with Gladys, they could have gotten new neighbors. Or did like "Dennis the Menace." When Mr. George Wilson left, his brother John Wilson came. At first he stayed with George's wife, before she was replaced with John's wife. Of course, now that I think about it, that was a bit of crazy idea, lol.

Yes, and WAY less romantic. Once DY left, the romance went right out the window. EM & DS had zero romantic chemistry, despite being friends in real life.

Also, Endora and Darrin seemed to be a bit meaner to each other in the DS era. Endora hated Durwood more than she did before. But really, I can't blame her for that, lol.

Something else I would like to have seen is Dick York's version of "Darrin the Warlock." It was a good plot, but we get Dick Sargent's performence. It would have meant a lot more coming from York.

With Endora and the DY Darrin, there was (DEEP down) an underlying love and respect for each other beneath all the venom. Endora did realize that Dum Dum really, truly was in love with her daughter.

Endora and Darrin #2 never made an attempt to get along--they were just at each other's throats constantly. And we wonder why Sam had battle fatigue by Season 8. She just started yelling back and getting saracastic with both of them.

I just got the set today, I wanted to get it earlier but didn't have the time. Anyway I was watching 'Samantha's Curious Cravings' and I noticed a really funny joke that I'm shocked made it past the censors. So pregnant Samantha walks into the doctor's office, and eventually they exchange this dialouge. This isn't word for word but you get the idea;

Sam: I'm all out of my pills.
Doctor (looking at her pregnant stomach): Isn't it a bit late to be worrying about that?
Sam: Not that, my iron pills.

Same here!! I don't think Bewitched would've been nearly as big a hit with DS in the role. No one could've played Darrin to perfection the way DY did.

OH Nuts!

I'm totally with you. I'll view 6-9 for free from a lib. If they ever get super marked down to something crazy like $6.99 or $9.99, then maybe 6. The 150+ eps from 1-5 is enuf for me as DY SO MUCH BETTER.

I also much prefer the DY era, and wasn't plannning on buying season 6, but I did buy it and really it's not that bad. Samantha still looks pretty (her hair and clothes), and she acts the same as in the other seasons. Also, DS is tolerable. However, I'm not planning to buy season eight at all because I don't like the way Samantha did her hair or the clothes she wore, not to mention the sarcastic tone she took that last season. Plus, most of the scripts were recycled in season 8 also. I still haven't decided whether or not to buy season 7. I do like the Salem episodes, but a lot of the season 7 episodes were also re-makes and they also had that awful fake staircase in the kitchen.

I'm in the curious position of Dick Sargent being my first Darrin. He was the first Darrin I remembered as a kid (I'm sure I'm not alone). And later on, it was a surprise to see Dick York in the same role when they showed older episodes.

I'm committed to seeing this show through to the end, there's something I like about all the seasons through I'd admit that nostalgia fuels a lot of the later seasons appeal to me.

So I really do like the Sargent years even though for the most part the York years had the better writing.

I just think that York and Sargent had different takes on Darrin. Dick York played Darrin as part of a new married couple and by the time Sargent came along they were more an established couple where the love was still there but the romantic part of it was less bright.

None of the DS Darrin yelling at Samantha struck me as different from the times DY Darrin yelled except for one time. It was at the beginning of an episode where Sam used witchcraft in the kitchen and DS Darrin saw it and REALLY got mad. But I chalk that up to director probably wanting more anger then what was necessary and DS still trying to get a handle on how Darrin was supposed to react to Sam's witchcraft.

Jude The Obscure
05-25-2008, 12:48 AM
One of my main beefs about the later seasons is the lack of growth for Darrin (well heck all the characters)--he was married for a few years by then, so he shouldn't have the same wild reaction to the witchcraft as he did in the earlier seasons. He can still be annoyed, but not outright shocked and the anger was also getting old.

I disagree with a lot of you, season six is probably my favorite out of all Bewitched seasons. I have seen some season seven and eight episodes on YouTube and I didn't find that the storylines were recycled, particularly the ones where Tabitha goes to school; it was interesting to see how Dick Sargent would react (he was great in a couple of episodes of 'Dukes of Hazzard' where he played a sheriff). Darrin wasn't my favorite character anyway, Sam was, she's the reason I like the show.

I agree that DS was funny as Sheriff Grady Byrd on Dukes - he was a temporary replacement for James Best as Rosco P. Coltrane. But I just don't think he fit in on Bewitched...he had VERY huge shoes to fill. I don't blame Mr. Sargent for the demise of Bewitched - the show was already getting stale in Season 5, when Dick York was still playing Darrin. I still think the show should've ended after Season 5, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, I still think they should've shut it down after Dick York couldn't go on anymore, but I will admit that the last few seasons had their bright spots. The Salem episodes were cute, and little Erin Murphy became quite a polished actress for someone so young. But to me, it just wasn't the same. I actually first became a Bewitched fan thanks to WUAB Channel 43 showing "Bewitched" (cut) during the Screen Gems Network in the summer of 2000. They took it off in December of 2000 (or thereabouts), and I even wrote them a letter asking them to bring it back, with even a "regular" syndication deal. Looking back, that letter I wrote when I was 13 was rather cheesy, but I'd like to think it worked. ;)

For me, seeing Liz in knee-high boots in the late episodes trumps most of her previous fashion choices...!

As much as I like the early b & w seasons, the color years provided some of my absolute favorite episodes, such as the bedwarmer in Salem and all of the time-travel eps (Henry VIII, Civil War era with Jack Cassidy and Isabel Sanford, Salem witchtrials, Darren the Bold...). And Dick Sargent was on board for many of those, so I'm certainly glad the series went on when Dick York could no longer continue.
