Ireneparalegal 05-04-2008, 08:32 PM Well, I am not Kermit, but I try. I give our aluminum cans and plastics to our neighbor who cashes them in. I hate when I hear the water running when Raymond is shaving or brushing his teeth. I keep telling him there is no need for the water to be running! I use the washer and dryer late in the afternoon or sometimes in the evening. They say it is better to use them late in the day. PlayOn 05-04-2008, 09:28 PM i used to didn't believe in Globul Warming. i thought that was something the left came up to scare the heck out of us all. but i realized how crazy the weather is. last year, i was wearing a short sleeve and pants outside and it was DECEMBER!!! So, i have changed my mind and have figured out GW is real. but i'm not radical about it. i don't cut my showers or anything of that nature. to tell the truth, i haven't done anything, tho i know i should. dawsongirl 05-05-2008, 12:20 AM I recycle a lot. I hate it when people don't care if they throw away pop cans or newspapers. It's so easy to recycle those! You even get 5 cents a pop can here. They come and pick up recyclables from the curb like the garbageman does. It's so easy!! So I don't know why people can't do it. :( The school I work at doesn't and it makes me sick; it doesn't teach the kids how important it is to recycle paper. I try to even by things at the store that can be recycled. I switched from taking juice boxes to work to buying juice in plastic bottles. I noticed that the bottle of Suave body wash I had was a #5, which isn't recycleable, so I may not ever buy that again (though they did take the bottle with the other stuff in the bin). Obviously I kid but it feels so forcefed these days. *ClassicPinUp* 05-05-2008, 10:34 AM I recycle, I've stopped buying bottled water and now just use purified/filtered water at home and pour it into a glass pitcher (since I've read plastic is toxic to your health) and also a glass bottle for when I'm going out (looks just like a regular water bottle only it's glass), I make sure the water is turned off when brushing my teeth etc. I'm getting better about turning things off and unplugging them when I'm done using them. The only thing I won't change is the length of time I shower. I take about a 30-40 minute shower-always have and I'm not changing that. I honestly don't know how some of these people (mostly celebs) can claim to only take 3-5 minute showers?!?! How does one (especially a woman) get everything clean and done! Oh and my SUV. I wouldn't get rid of that. Basically I try to balance the good and bad. Augustus McCrae 05-05-2008, 12:40 PM This going green nonsence has turned into a cult! It is everywhere! At baseball games they have the team whereing green in observation of Earth day. On TV shows it is stressed. On damn near every home make over show they have to make it a priority that they are using some sort of green material! ENOUGH! When someone can actually show proof that man is causing harm then I'll take notice but getting a bunch of scientist together over a beer and have them come to an "agreement" without any solid proof is just pandering to the enviromentalist. dawsongirl 05-05-2008, 10:18 PM I honestly don't know how some of these people (mostly celebs) can claim to only take 3-5 minute showers?!?! How does one (especially a woman) get everything clean and done! I know! It takes me at least 5 minutes just to shampoo and rinse my hair. I'd like a way to shut the water off when I wash my hair, but it's so inconvenient to turn the water back on and try to get it back to the right temp. *ClassicPinUp* 05-05-2008, 10:35 PM I know! It takes me at least 5 minutes just to shampoo and rinse my hair. So true! I've honestly tried to take a fast shower and even that took 15 minutes. I'd like a way to shut the water off when I wash my hair, but it's so inconvenient to turn the water back on and try to get it back to the right temp. Yep, and you end up wasting more water anyway because you then have to let the water run until it warms up again. Eh, I figure I can just use the extra minutes from the people who only take 3-5 minute showers...it balances everything out...right? Ireneparalegal 05-05-2008, 10:39 PM Do what I do with the water warming up in the shower. Put a small bucket in there and while the water is warming up, the cold water that goes into the bucket, you use that to water your garden or plants. I would hate to see that water go to waste but it dawned on me I could use that water elsewhere. ;) *ClassicPinUp* 05-05-2008, 11:03 PM Do what I do with the water warming up in the shower. I would hate to see that water go to waste but it dawned on me I could use that water elsewhere. ;) Great idea! Thanks! ponytail 05-06-2008, 06:42 AM I buy organic. I drink purified/filtered water, I carry a glass jar ( to refill my water bottle ) and stainless steel water bottle. I drive a gas efficient car. I recycle. I changed most of my lighting to CFL bulbs. I use a electric and reel mower. I buy EnergyStar products. I wash my clothes in cold water. I do take 5-6 minute shower's. I bring my own bags to the stores. I unplug appliances. But I've been doing most of this stuff for years. Crimson and Clover 05-07-2008, 03:27 PM We recycle and we take our aluminum cans and sale them. Dont use plastic bags, I take canvas bags with me to the store. Switched to CFL bulbs. Hardly ever use our air conditioner or heater. Clothes are only washed in cold water. Use dish water to water the plants. Ireneparalegal 05-07-2008, 03:58 PM Great idea! Thanks! You are welcome. ;) Zoneboy 05-07-2008, 03:58 PM The only thing I won't change is the length of time I shower. I take about a 30-40 minute shower-always have and I'm not changing that. My brother does the same thing and there's no telling how many gallons of water is being wasted by taking extremely long showers. I can understand wanting to be clean but that's just overkill as far as I'm concerned. In 30-40 minutes, I can shave, take a shower, wash my hair, brush my teeth, get dressed and be out the door and I'm just as clean as someone who spends that much time in the shower alone. I will take longer showers if I've gotten really dirty & sweaty but for now, My showers are limited to 10 minutes or less and it's been that way for years. *ClassicPinUp* 05-07-2008, 04:55 PM My brother does the same thing and there's no telling how many gallons of water is being wasted by taking extremely long showers. Well, if that routine works for you than great! ;) I will admit since reading this thread I've been trying hard to cut down from 30-40 minutes to 20-25 but that's as good as I'm getting. I do everything in the shower; washing, shaving, brush my teeth etc. so I feel that's pretty good -for me- and I don't feel the need to rush it any further. Crimson and Clover 05-07-2008, 04:57 PM my shower is usually 5 minutes. lor and lilly are always sitting at the door yelling for me. I actually noticed that today I took a shower in 11 minutes. That tells me I can take a short shower. I take longer showers when my muscles or back aches, the hot water feels good on my back. Janice 05-07-2008, 05:20 PM Not a thing. When the day comes that the hypocrite politicians and celebrities who are blabbing about this get rid of their private jets, limosines, and mansions, I'll consider making changes. Until then, I'll just follow their lead. Their carbon footprint could stomp out a good size city. Augustus McCrae 05-07-2008, 05:41 PM Not a thing. We installed touchless faucets in the guest bathroom and in the girls bathroom. That's about it for our household. Czas na Zywiec 05-07-2008, 11:15 PM As much as one man can do! I hardly ever drive my car anymore, I just walk or bike (Bonus points cause I've also lost some weight because of doing so), 5 minutes is all I need in the shower, reuse all my bottles, replaced my light bulbs, etc., etc. It really doesn't take that much to go a long way. In the long run, I've also saved tons of money by not buying as much gasoline, water bottles, and also my water bill has gone down! Pretty much a win/win situation for me. That's also a huge focus in my career. Designing and building with a focus on using recycled and earth-friendly materials. Also equiping buildings with renewable and cheap sources of energy such as passive solar heating, solar panels, natural lighting, etc. Ireneparalegal 05-07-2008, 11:39 PM As much as one man can do! I hear that. ;) I mean, if I can save $$$, I am all for it. A smaller water bill is great. Not using the heater means less money to the gas company. Turning off lights that are not being used, using the lightbulbs that save energy save me money in the long run means the electric company doesn't get it. Giving my aluminum cans and plastics to my neighbor who can use the extra money makes me feel good. She even bought a plastic trash can so I can just toss them over the fence. Less trash for me to have to deal with. ;) And my advice abt putting a small bucket in the shower to get the cold water saves me $$$ on the water bill because I can use that water on my plants. :D Czas na Zywiec 05-08-2008, 01:24 AM I hear that. ;) I mean, if I can save $$$, I am all for it. Even though I only have one plant, but hey it'd at least be a start! Whatever's left over can go and water the trees in the courtyard of my apartment complex. I'm kind of lucky to live in a really eco-conscious area. Whenever I leave town and notice the lack of recycling bins, I'm always reminded of how easy I really have it. Maybe I wouldn't be as recycling freindly if it wasn't so readily available, but it just goes to show you that it doesn't take much. A little bit of effort by the city can such have a huge impact! When they fill with trash, I simply take out the bag and toss it. I also use the bags to pick up my dog's poo from his litter box or from outside when he does his business outdoors. They come in handy for lots of trash pick up. My main reason for doing all these things is to save money. I know you can understand that. Any little bit can go a long way. Unusual temperatures is not proof of "global warming." (BTW, the Antarctic region is cooling so how can it be "global" warming?) Anyway, the temp has gone well into the '60s in New York decades ago in December and January. It didn't happen often, but it did happen. And if you want some examples of really weird weather... Spearfish, South Dakota, saw its temperature warm from -4 degrees F at 7:30 AM to 45 degrees at 7:32 AM, a 45 degree rise in just two minutes during the morning of January 22, 1943. Kipp, Montana, on Dec. 1, 1896, saw the temperature rise 80 degrees in about 15 hours, entirely melting 30" of snow. In Granville, North Dakota, the temperature rose from a morning low of -33 to an afternoon high of 50 above on Feb. 21, 1918, an 83-degree rise as result of a Chinook wind. (Info from "Extreme Weather," by Christopher C. Burt.) As can be seen, weird weather has always and will always happen. The weather seems "weird" today because many people don't know what it has done historically. Fleet 05-11-2008, 11:29 PM Not a thing. It has given you shelter, food and water, at the very least you can return the favor. Even if you are just recycling plastic or glass a little bit helps. dawsongirl 05-12-2008, 12:03 AM My brother does the same thing and there's no telling how many gallons of water is being wasted by taking extremely long showers. We have curb-side recycling pickup, and I think it does get a few more people off their asses and recycle than how it used to be when we had to take it somewhere. I still don't see everyone's bin out though. :( Some people need to be hit over the head to not throw their newspapers away. Hell, some idiots still throw their pop cans away and we have a can/bottle refund! |
