View Full Version : How would U rate Keeping Up Appearances?
Chris Billings 04-30-2008, 11:22 PM My Brit friend suggested I take a look at "Keeping Up Appearances".
Since the idea of regular english folk acting posh always makes me laugh he thinks this program is good fit for me. What do you think?
Is this a good show in your opinion?
Chris
Jude The Obscure 05-01-2008, 08:13 AM Excellent show!!
sabbi 05-01-2008, 04:23 PM Hi there, 'Keeping Up Appearances' is a terrific show, i've watched every episode, it's so good i even watch the reruns on uk gold. Hyacinth Bucket(pronounced Bouquet) is the biggest snob ever. She is always having, candle light tea parties with her best Perriwinkle fine bone china tea service. To tell you the truth, i always feel so sorry for Richard(her very much hen pecked husband) She has a sister Violet, she's the one with the big house, fancy car, swimming pool and room for a pony(and that's what she tells everybody) she also has a sister Daisy who is heavy built, frumpy and married to Onslow(a work shy layabout who sits around in his vest) Hyacinth, of course is ashamed of them. Then theres sister Rose, who lives with Daisy and Onslow and she is man daft. She runs around wearing plunging necklines and skirts that just cover her bottom. Hyacinth is also ashamed of Rose. I tell you she is a snob and i love this show and if you get a chance, watch it, you won't be disappointed folks. :woohoo: :thanks:
The Great One 06-11-2008, 06:27 PM Great show!!!
coffield3 06-23-2008, 08:23 PM Fantastic show, I love to watch it on a dull sunday afternoon because it brightens the day :D
LeeBlue 06-27-2008, 02:57 PM I love this show -- it is hilarious!!
80sTrivia 06-28-2008, 02:17 PM My favorite BritCom of all time! Hyacinth is hilarious, especially with all the shenanigans she becomes involved in trying to keep from finding out about her family and how they actually live! Patricia Routledge is a treasure!
howierules86 08-24-2008, 02:23 PM A perfect 10! BBC America should put this show back on their lineup for sure! :happyface
minki 09-06-2008, 07:56 PM It's a funny show, you should check it out! I will warn you that the jokes do tend to get tired after a while ("it's Bouquet!"). Still, I've seen it hundreds of times and it continues to amuse me :)

I agree, I have watched several episodes and while I love the premise, a regular English lady pretending to be part of high society, Im already tired of her character.
My mother on the other hand has just started watching the show and absolutely loves it! We were watching an episode where she and her husband Richard went sailing (of course Hyacinth insists on referring to the simple boat as a "yacht") and my mother laughed herself to tears. Something she rarely does when watching TV and something which makes me feel good to see.
Thanks, Christopher (Did I mention I live in a detached home? lol) :)
delly 10-22-2008, 01:39 AM its not one of the Beeb's best IMO - On Foot In The Grave beats it hands down.
friendsfan77 10-24-2008, 01:00 PM This is definitely a favorite. I believe this was also the first Britcom I ever watched.
Furienna 01-19-2009, 09:50 PM This is a very good britcom. My mum and I watched an episode of it only a few hours ago.
Mikado 01-19-2009, 10:25 PM Ill go against the grain here and say that i dont care for this show at all....it makes working class people look like fools
Dr. Thong 01-20-2009, 07:27 PM "Hellloooooooooooo!"
I love Hyacinth. It's a great show.
There is a scene where Richard is contemplating retirement and Hyacinth says something to the effect of "You'll get to spend every day with me."
The look on his face when he contemplates that fate is priceless.
A wonderful show with a great cast. There were two Roses, however -- I wish I knew the actresses' names, because there's one I like and one I don't.

I don't see it that way at all. First of all, Daisy and Onslows aren't average working class people as much as they're complete slobs. And really, Onslow is actually smart. He's just very lazy too.

The first Rose was Shirley Stellfox. She was really blonde and rather calm. The second Rose was Mary Millar. She was more reddish blonde or cendré and more of a drama queen.

Thank you, Furienna. I prefer Mary Millar as Rose. She was funnier.
I think all the actors on that show were well chosen. They really make those characters believable. The situations get very silly most times, but you buy those characters getting into the situations and the way they react to them.
I think Richard's reactions to Hyacinth are usually spot on -- you really get that he's this weary, hen-pecked husband who's had to suffer for a great many years.
We can all laugh at the fear and anxiety that Hyacinth inspires in her friends, family & acquaintances because we know that if any one of us ever knew a Hyacinth in real life, we'd run for the hills!;)
Furienna 01-20-2009, 08:33 PM You're most welcome! :D
I think I would have to go with Mary too, if I had to choose between them. But I think Shirley was good too.
And yes, the actors were all well-chosen.

Agreed :) Mary was fantastic (may she rest in peace) and Shirley wasn't bad but she just didn't complete the cast....a little too subdued. But she went off to do another sitcom anyways. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Elizabeth shes great and so hilarious..... 'I didn't volunteer when one lives next door to Hyacinth one is conscripted' lol

hmmm i see your point but i dont think thats what the show is supposed to highlight- what it does highlight is that people dont like snobby people and generally disagree with what their opinions are (eg: Hyacinth is disgusted with Daisys and Onslows way of life and thinks its in poor taste; but alot of people like Onslow and Daisy and think they are lovely people and would rather spend time with them than with Hyacinth- hence they dislike her because she is snobby.) its supposed to be funny- showing that snobby people dont always get their way and how their crazy antics affect people lol and it is hilarious
Furienna 06-25-2010, 08:33 PM Yeah, that's so funny. Hyacinth cares so much about what people think, but really, she has no clue about what other people think. She thinks she's all perfect and everybody wants to be her friend, when people really usually dislike her. On the other hand, even though she's so ashamed of Daisy, Onslow and Rose, people usually like them.
LUNCH 11-26-2010, 07:13 PM It is a very good, funny show.I think that the character of Richard is even more funny than Hyacinth. His acting is perfect for the part. Alot of people think British humor or(humour) is alot different than American humor. But that's not true.Even though it's different in a way,its also very similair. There are many very good comedy tv shows that were made in the UK,and it's unfortunate that in the states we only are able to see so few of them on television.
MurphyCarmichael 06-08-2012, 08:49 PM It's very funny and my favorite Britcom. I used to love watching it as a kid and never missed an episode when I saw it was on. It's so funny how Hyacinth thinks everyone likes her when in reality they don't like her at all and try to avoid her. It's also funny how she thinks keeping up a good appearance is so important when her trying to do so is a lot of what makes people not like her. Then she thinks Onslow, Daisy, and Rose are so embarrassing and don't want anyone to see them, yet whenever they do they end up liking them instead of her... lol. Just goes to show how trying to be/look high class doesn't really mean anything, it's your personality that matters. Still love this show.
kattviews 06-15-2012, 12:13 PM One of my favourite!
I love it when she corrected someone about HER last name.
Funny!
Doz2003 10-16-2012, 12:43 PM love it, one of my faves since being young "RICHHHARD" haha!
I'm Batman 12-03-2012, 07:54 AM Great show...sometimes however you just have to take a break from it.
Patricia Routledge is a huge talent. I understand she has a very nice singing voice.
You can see a young PR in To Sir With Love

I know what you mean. I don't know how long the show ran, but they seem to keep showing the same batch of episodes over and over on my local PBS affiliate. So a break is necessary once in a while.
Still a great show. I think Hyacinth is one of the great sitcom characters.

That was the "Bucket" joke which was the only laugh in five years of the show.

The show ran for five years, from 1990 to 1995.
You_Rang 02-08-2013, 05:39 PM I love this show! I watch almost every weekend on PBS.

I completely agree with you. I don't see it that way either. Onslow and Daisy are just lazy. They are nice people and it seems they are willing to help when asked. There were a few episodes I remember where they had been helpful and Onslow was concerned about Richard dealing with Hyacinth all the time when he retired and offered to take him out for a drink... seems nice. They seemed kind of smart, Onslow was reading a physics book in a couple episodes even. He was just always lazy and didn't want to do things. People always seemed to like him and Daisy, like that one lady Hyacinth was trying to impress to get onto a committee and the lady ended up liking Onslow and Daisy and not her.
It mainly shows that people do not like snobby people, who are trying to be all rich and high class, they like the working class people better. Everyone always runs from Hyacinth because she is snobby and acting high class, yet they talk to Onslow and Daisy.
One of my favorite shows since I was little. I get a lot of laughs out of it every time I watch it.
Furienna 02-26-2013, 04:17 AM I don't think they run away from Hyacinth because she's snobby and wants to be high class, but because she's pushy and annoying and can't take a clue.

Yea, that would be the main reason. I don't think they like the way she is always acting snobby and trying to 'keep up appearances' of high class either though. But, she is totally pushy and annoying and won't even listen if someone tried to say no to her, like when Emmitt tried to get out of going to coffee so many times and told Liz to just tell her he couldn't and Hyacinth didn't even listen when Liz started to say Emmit couldn't... or when she was inviting people to a candlelit dinner, she wouldn't even give them the chance to say no... like she told the vicar's wife... "Oh so glad you can both come." before his wife could even get a word in.
Tap Dancer 06-04-2013, 09:20 AM This thread was started in 2008 and I noticed the OP never came back to update us. I wonder if he watched the show and if he enjoys it? :)
slash187 06-07-2013, 12:43 AM I always liked it. I got the dvds.
veggie-tari-jenn 10-31-2013, 02:53 AM Great show.....just watched the first season.....really funny.....
