I seem to remember my VCR doing the same thing when that little tab was broken off. I seem to remember my VCR doing the same thing when that little tab was broken off. My VCR also did that. TVFactFan 04-06-2008, 04:21 PM Make sure the little record tab on the tape http://www.cybercollege.com/m/small_vhs_tab.jpg is in tact and not damaged in any way. I seem to remember my VCR doing the same thing when that little tab was broken off. It does that with any tape I put in. Plays with no problem but when hitting the record button it shuts off Furienna 04-06-2008, 07:08 PM I had problems with my VCR too today. I had to clean it to make it work again. Ireneparalegal 04-07-2008, 06:31 PM I think the VCR is either dirty (the heads might be dirty) or it is on its last leg. I used to occassionally clean the heads by using q-tips and alcohol. I would use a pair of scissors to reach the heads and clean them. But I know when it didn't want to record anymore, that it was no longer working. Buffyboy323 04-07-2008, 11:21 PM When a VCR plays a tape with no problem but SHUTS OFF when you hit the RECORD button is that a DIRTY ISSUE or a DYING ISSUE Solomon, I believe it's a dying issue. I had the same problem a few years back. It shut off every time I tried to record something. It also shut off when I would press play - without pressing stop first. And it also shut off when I would rewind it. Your better off just buying a new one. You'll be able to find a decent one for $25-$30. You can also try setting the timer when you want to record something. Maybe it won't turn off when you do that... TVFactFan 04-07-2008, 11:29 PM Solomon, I believe it's a dying issue. I had the same problem a few years back. Buffyboy323 04-07-2008, 11:42 PM mine did that last year right before it died on me and i had to replace it SEE Solomon? - It's time to get a new one. The ladies of "The View" killed your VCR! Furienna 04-08-2008, 08:37 AM Salomon, I think you and I have something in common. We both have to buy a new VCR quickly, before they stop making them. TVFactFan 04-08-2008, 09:46 AM Salomon, I think you and I have something in common. We both have to buy a new VCR quickly, before they stop making them. The sad part is the only type of VCR you can buy right now is the one that is the combined with a DVD Recorder or DVD Player which means I will have to shell out about $120 next week Courtnee 04-08-2008, 11:54 AM Just get a DVR to record your shows and burn them to discs. Brieannas21 04-08-2008, 12:18 PM Just get a DVR to record your shows and burn them to discs. Exactly it's just like a VCR, I use my DVR just about every day to record things. Ireneparalegal 04-08-2008, 12:53 PM Things happen for a reason Solomon. The VCR Gods are telling you it is now time to buy a DVR. I have DVD recorder. The times are changing. Furienna 04-08-2008, 01:01 PM Well, if something's not broken, why fix it? As good as DVD is, I also like the old VCR technology. If you want to save shows or movies for years to come, DVD is good enough. But I still prefer VCR, when it comes to daily use. It's not easy to empty a DVD, but it's easy to tape over something on a video tape. kooky12 04-08-2008, 01:21 PM The sad part is the only type of VCR you can buy right now is the one that is the combined with a DVD Recorder or DVD Player which means I will have to shell out about $120 next week You need not pay so much for a vcr/dvd combo. Sears.com has one now for 69.99 I have seen them in the SUnday fliers on sale for 59.99 (the ones where the dvd records are significantly more.) Zoneboy 04-08-2008, 01:33 PM Solomon, Why not check out your local Goodwill and see if they have any vcr's. I picked up a really nice Sony Hi-Fi with remote for only $10 and it works perfectly. Many people are donating their vcr's to Goodwill and other thrifts stores and you should be able to get one for a reasonable price. LOL Furienna 04-08-2008, 06:26 PM I meant the entire technology, not just Salomon's VCR. TVFactFan 04-08-2008, 06:34 PM Just get a DVR to record your shows and burn them to discs. Brieannas21 04-08-2008, 06:53 PM The decision has been made, I will be purchasing a DVD recorder/VHS Combo next Tuesday. Buy a DVD recorder, they are very reasonable now since there's not a lot of people buying VCR's anymore. TVFactFan 04-08-2008, 07:41 PM Cool but make sure the names Emerson, Magnavox or Philips aren't on it. I still have to convert my stuff to DVD and finished up some trades that was put on freeze due to the sudden death of my VCR Brieannas21 04-08-2008, 08:17 PM Thanks for the note, just jotted it down I have a Philips DVD recorder and I haven't had any problems with it, I've had it for almost 2 years. It works great, I use it 4 times a week recording things. Ireneparalegal 04-08-2008, 08:20 PM You will enjoy having the DVD recorder Solomon. Time to upgrade. dawsongirl 04-09-2008, 12:05 AM I'll sell you an almost brand new Panasonic VCR. Seriously. I bought it and barely used it because it doesn't have LP speed. Furienna 04-11-2008, 04:47 AM User's manuals just make me confused. I rather figure out things by myself too. By the way, bad news, guys! My VCR kicked the bucket tonight. There's not a sign of life left in it. :( Zoneboy 04-11-2008, 06:13 AM esp. emerson i had nothing but problems with an emerson vcr that i had it ate at least 6 of my tapes before i consigned that thing to the junk pile Correct, Emerson vcr's are notorious for eating tapes, I've also gone through that experience as well. I got an Emerson dvd recorder 3 years ago for Christmas and that darn thing wouldn't allow me to record anything. If I tried to record a program off tv, I got an error message telling me that it was copyrighted. I even got one if I tried to dub something off a vhs tape that I'd recorded off the tv. I figured I would get the message if I tried to copy any commercial tapes or dvd's but it was that way no matter what I tried to copy. That thing went back to Wal-Mart and I wound up getting a Pioneer instead.
