A transgender man who is six months pregnant said in an interview aired by Oprah Winfrey on Thursday that he always wanted to have a child and considers it a miracle.

"It's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human desire," a thinly bearded Thomas Beatie said. "I have a very stable male identity," he added, saying that pregnancy neither defines him nor makes him feel feminine.

Beatie, 34, who lives in Oregon, was born a woman but decided to become a man 10 years ago. He began taking testosterone treatments and had breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest.

"I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day," he told the talk show host. Beatie's wife Nancy said she inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a bank.

Now, he said, his size 32 jeans are getting a bit tight and his shirts are a bit stretched.

Nancy, to whom he has been married for five years and who has two grown daughters by a previous marriage, also appeared on the show, saying the couple's roles will not change once the baby is born.

"He's going to be the father and I'm going to be the mother," she said. Their marriage is legal and he is recognized under state law as a man.

The couple was shown on video provided by People Magazine, which collaborated with Winfrey on the show, showing the room that will be the baby's nursery. Beatie said the little girl was going to be "daddy's little princess."

The couple was also filmed in their hometown of Bend, Oregon, where he underwent an ultrasound showing the baby in his womb.

"I can't believe it. I can't believe she's inside me," Beatie said while watching the ultrasound image. "We see her as our little miracle."

His obstetrician, Dr. Kimberly James, who practices in the Oregon town, told Winfrey, "This is a normal pregnancy."

She said Beatie stopped taking testosterone two years ago and his levels of the hormone are normal.

"This baby is totally healthy," she said. "This is what I consider a normal pregnancy."

The couple said they had been turned down by a number of other doctors before James agreed to take him as a patient.

The couple said an earlier attempt at pregnancy failed when he developed a tubal pregnancy, resulting in surgery that removed his Fallopian tubes.

The couple said they decided to go public with the pregnancy because they wanted to control the way the news got out. "We're just going to have the baby now," Nancy said. "If we have to, we'll go hide."

The couple runs a small business in Bend and has some savings, she said. In addition, Beatie is working on a book about his childhood, his mother's suicide and his life growing in Hawaii where, as a girl, he was a teen beauty pageant contestant and earned a martial arts black belt.

Winfrey called the development "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

I seen that yesterday. I had actually read abt it two weeks ago. Becoming pregnant and the life that grows inside is a miracle indeed. This is no different simply because she is now legally considered a man. She still has a uterus.

Miracle...I don't think so. Many humans with a uterus get preggers. Just cuz you're now a man just makes it weird, not a miracle.

It'd be more miraculous if a woman who was told she'd never have kids got pregnant.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this nor do I have a right to judge but i'm kind of confused about this man's logic on all of this... I mean he re-assigned his sex but yet, wants to carry a child... I don't know, but saying "yuck" about the whole subject is really uncalled for.

Yeah, he's just one of the guys.

agreed. he still has a uterus, so he was able to get pregnant. it's weird though.
i was watching the oprah episode yesterday for a bit & just kept thinking how weird it is that a man is pregnant. it looked weird & unnatural.

Until she removes her uterus and has a total transgender operation (a private part made and all), that is still a woman regardless. Men want to have babies too, but usually their female partner is the pregnant one. The mere fact she wanted to be pregnant tells me she is not fully comprehending what it means to live your life as a man.

I'm happy for them. Everybody needs to live their lives as they see fit, so long as they don't hurt anybody.

I hope he completes the transition after the pregnancy.

One of my good friends is trans gender. Although as far as I'm aware, he has no desire to be pregnant. As I understand it, he and his girlfriend want to adopt. Or she'll be the one carrying the child.

I honestly don't understand all the hype about this.
She was born a woman, and still had the reproductive organs of a woman before she tried to turn herself into a "man", so why is this being treated by some like the immaculate conception?

Miracle? I don't think so!ohno:

Btw, has Oprah turned into the new Jerry Springer?

You know and I know that this is for publicity, well, it seems like it to me. They said they couldn't believe all the attention that they were getting but yet, alerted the media. Don't be shocked when they have a show on TLC that will come on following another media spotlight attention seekers, Jon and Kate.

This whole story creeps me out. It's ok to see the naked belly of a pregnant woman, but a man. That picture is just creepy. I do hope everything goes well, and father and baby is alright.

I have no problem with this, whatever they want to do with their life is their business. But why does all these news headlines/oprah and everyone insist on calling them the world's first pregnant man?? I'm sorry but if you have a uterus and all those female parts you are still female.

The importance is the love and care they will give to this child.

Let's keep in mind this isn't a miracle. He is still a biological female. This isn't a biological man with child.

I totally agree. I mean this person said they didn't feel comfortable as a women so why get pregnant if she feels better as a guy then change your whole body inside and out beacuse nobody wants to see a pregnant man. I really feel sorry for this kid because this kid is going to be so confused when he finds out his part mom/dad had him/her. In my opinion this isn't the right type of enviroment for a kid to be raised in
