View Full Version : I guess women are doomed in the clothing department
junecleaver 03-31-2008, 05:14 PM So i'm 20 years old and my mom is 40, and we went shopping today. She is right, it is amazing how much stores these days are catering to the youth. Our mall is medium sized you could say, we have many name-brand stores and there are almost NO stores in there for women around the age of 40 and up (the general population who does not care to wear jeans with holes and skimpy tops with hollister written across it). I notice this too, our favorite store to shop WAS the Gap, and boy have they gone downhill. They are starting to cater to teens too, and maybe even pregnant women becase every top there looks maternity right now. I couldn't even find a normal button down shirt. Yeah, we didn't buy much today. Any other women around my age and my mom's age having trouble finding things that aren't for kids? Afterall, it should be adults who have a dominant amount of stores, they are the ones who actually work for their money.
Ireneparalegal 03-31-2008, 05:17 PM I shop in junior sections because the clothes and the clothing stores that do cater to women my age (40's) have ugly fashions. They are matronly. I don't look my age, so for me to wear something that would look ridiculous on a 25-30 year olds is terrible. Now, what makes it harder is that sometimes in the junior section they have sizes that won't fit me simply because of my chest size. It takes a lot of looking but eventually I find some great things to wear.
junecleaver 03-31-2008, 05:26 PM Yeah, my mom said that too, they actually age you if anything. I mean normal clothes pretty much, just anything away from the 16 year olds. Thats why we liked the Gap, they used to have adult things (minus the holes and stupid logo's) that looked classy.I stay away from junior sections now because i rarely find anything in the junior section that fits my chest, lol
Ireneparalegal 03-31-2008, 05:33 PM I found that Khol's has some great fashions. It is a matter of looking at the Sunday ads and seeing what is available. Shopping in the mall is horrible for fashions for women my age. Everything is catered to the teens.
*ClassicPinUp* 03-31-2008, 05:44 PM I have trouble finding anything that doesn't scream "SLUT!"
Don't get me wrong I'm no prude and I love wearing tops that show some cleavage...but the key word there is "some"...almost all the tops I see show damn near everything! I'd rather walk around topless and save the $40:crazy::lol: I have to say of all places Victoria's Secret is my absolute favorite place to buy clothing. The clothes there are sexy yet classy. Also, Macy's is nice.

 You are so right, I also find VS classier than say Abercrombie and Fitch. When i shop with my fiance at A&F, i notice the male's clothing is more classier, not to mention thicker and can hold up longer and keep you warmer. Women's clothing takes up approximately less than half of the store, as the clothing is so small almost needs to be seen with a magnifying glass. And then, people wonder why young girls are having eating disorders.

Those clothes seem to be made for Barbie dolls instead.

Man, I haven't been to A&F in a few years because of all those reasons you listed. It was bad then I can't even imagine how it is now. You're so right about the male's clothing though it's much better quality then the women's.
Courtnee 03-31-2008, 10:50 PM I have a hard time finding clothes because of my hips...they're bigger than they look and I have to buy tops in the next size up and they fit funny.
Hollow 03-31-2008, 11:00 PM i mostly just wear band t-shirts from hot topic that i suppose are unisex, if not meant for males, and jeans from wal*mart...so no problems here.
dawsongirl 03-31-2008, 11:46 PM Yeah, the pants are horrible. Low-rise is great, but this waist below my hips thing is for the birds. And a lot of the shirts are way too low or too tight. Or too short. Sorry, I don't like bending over and people can see my ass because the shirt's not long enough and the pants are too long.
Teens these days tend to dress like crap. I swear 75% of the girls wear pants that are 2 sizes too small, so then their fat rolls over their waistband, and then they go and wear a shirt that's too tight. And they think they're HOT. ohno: Fat rolls have NEVER been hot.
catlover79 03-31-2008, 11:52 PM I look young for my age, too, plus have a very tall, skinny build, so finding clothes isn't really a problem. I like Kohl's and NY & Company the best for clothes shopping. The styles are simple and understated, yet they look elegant and tasteful. I like that. I do agree that too many fashions are catered to the young crowd and look so trashy. I guess it has a lot to do with where you shop for your clothes, too.

I know, it literally looks like they shopped in the children's section. I see that at school all the time. I'm wondering how the heck they got their head through some of those shirts, and then these same girls sit down, and thier crack (not just a little, a lot) is showing THE WHOLE TIME. They can't feel that? I would be so embarrassed. And to think they probably think people like me (who wear things their size) dress bad

I heard we will be getting a Kohl's at our mall soon, not sure though. Since more than one person said kohl's is good, i wouldn't mind checking it out.

Probably! Oh well, then I dress bad too.

They have good prices. I shop there all the time.

ditto. they've got good prices...especially when they have sales. most of my shirts are from there.
Janice 04-01-2008, 04:32 AM When I was working in corporate in my 30s and 40s, I shopped almost exclusively at Ann Taylors and Talbots. They have trendy styles, and also very classic styles. My mother-in-law is in her 80s and buys her clothes at Talbots. My fashion-plate stepdaughter, who is 41, also shops there, but mostly at Ann Taylors. My niece, who is 25, buys some funky styles at Ann Taylors, as well as timeless styles.
Pricey, but worth every penny, as the clothes are made well. You get what you pay for. I have a Burberry trench coat that I bought a dozen years ago. They sell the same style today. I only wear it when I'm dressed up, and it's raining. There are many clothing stores for middle-aged women. Just gotta pay the price. If you go to the Copley Mall in Boston, your jaw would drop over their clothes, and the prices. That's where I shop for special occasions, holiday outfits, etc.

My wife is the most fashionable woman I know, and she shops at Ann Taylor. I get her gift certificates there. My mother, who has more money than anyone I personally know, drops big money at Talbots. We give her gift certificates for all occasions. Barneys is another upscale clothing store where women of all ages can get nice clothes. It's those price tags that drive me up the wall.
junecleaver 04-01-2008, 05:46 PM Well, i know where i'm shopping when i graduate college lol. We have no Ann Taylor over here (anymore), the nearest one to me is 70 miles though so i will try checking it out.
Courtnee 04-01-2008, 05:57 PM Lane Bryant is nice, too. But I usually buy all my clothes from the Base Exchange.
Nighthawk76 04-01-2008, 05:59 PM I hate the way young women dress these days. Since I work at a college, I see all the latest fashions. The girls all dress really sloppy. When I was in college the girls dressed a whole lot better.

The boys dress sloppy too. Pull up your damn pants! I'd have thought that trend would have been phased out by now.

lol everyone here at college is always always in sweats and flip flops no matter what the temperature. I can't be like that, I feel so sloppy and scummy wearing sweats around (no offense to anyone who does cause that's fine, it's just my own thing). I mean I don't dress super mature either considering I'm 18 but I don't think I do a bad job. I go to stores ranging from American Eagle (my favorite) and Hollister to JC Penny's and Macy's. In fact my friends always tend to go towards the woman's clothing department and I still stick with the junior's so I feel weird shopping with them sometimes lol. I guess it's a matter a preference. I see a lot of nice women's clothes that aren't all for teens or are trashy, though. Department stores like Macy's and the like always have nice things.
I know this is a ladies only thread, but i want to add my own fashion frustration.
I am nearly 40 years old. I don't want to wear jeans that go past my heel and drag the ground so they get all frayed and look cool.
I want normal jeans that don't touch the ground.
Thank you.
;)

Pants are supposed to hang 1/2 an inch from the floor, according to Clinton Kelly.
Nobody's gonna get that joke unless you watch TLC a lot.

I don't think we have ANN TAYLOR either.
When I was working at the law firms, I shopped at Robinsons-May and Macys. Those kind of stores are great for evening wear or something fancy, business attire, etc. I shop there when that is what I am looking for. But for casual wear, it is Kohls and this other store, whose name slipped my mind for the moment.
dawsongirl 04-01-2008, 11:10 PM I used to buy fancier clothes at Casual Corner...until they went out of business. x_x But now I don't dare wear nice clothes to work.

A lot of jobs don't require business attire. It is all abt casual wear or a uniform of some sort.
It makes no sense for me to buy clothes that are business attire since I am now at home working. I can wear what I want. ;) When it comes to a special occasion or I just want to buy something fancy and/or sexy for the evening then it is all abt the more elegant stores. I have found some really cute dresses in the junior sections of some stores, especially some summer dresses that I can wear with sandals.

I've been looking for cute summer dresses, but most of them are too low cut and I don't have much of a chest. Although, I could always wear tank tops underneath them...
RoryGilmore 04-07-2008, 04:40 PM My mom works in a dressy atmosophere and she buys basically all of her clothes at Macys or Kohls. I've even found some nice shirts there, as for my jeans its either American Eagle or the Buckle, very pricey but the generally have sales. And I shop there so much I always have cupons
