I was wondering how come Tommy Alice Son was not on that many episodes in the later season

And it didn't help when the episodes still showed Alice treating Tommy like a child, rather than the adult he had become. Those were pretty much Alice treating Tommy like a mommy's boy.

Linda Lavin's heart wasn't in it as well. Her role on the show in the final season was relatively small. Many of the episodes she was basically coming in the diner and leaving to go somewhere.
