View Full Version : Reacquainted with Ozzie and Harriet
Penny Lane 03-22-2008, 11:15 AM I watched this show when I was a kid in the 50's.I liked it then but I love it now! I bought the Fun With Ozzie and Harriet dvd and I am really loving it! Ozzie is so laid back. What I am observing about the show is that it is much like Seinfeld. A show about nothing.(Example, one entire episode was about a bolt that Ozzie found and spent the entire episode trying to figure out where it came from) That is it's charm and appeal at least for me! The show is so clean and innocent. Some might say corny but I say cute! I also get a kick out of the old commercials! Did you recognize Mary Tyler Moore as the Hotpoint pixie? That was her first show biz job I think. :)

Yeah once you get hooked... you get hooked. I loved Ricky & David always always always & Harriet's wry sense of humor. Ozzie was Ok but kind of corny...his real genius with the show was behind the scenes as producer and contract negotiator....Wally's girlfriend Ginger is always a hoot...and if you look closely one of the gals Ricky goes out with is Cheryl Holridge - a former Mouseketeer!
Jude The Obscure 03-22-2008, 08:38 PM Yea, I first discovered O&H in 1980/1981 when my Fox station went on the air (as an independent). Don't know how many episodes were in the syndication package then, but I know it wasn't the full count. Then later on, saw some on Disney Channel and of course, the DVDs made me love them all the more. I've really become a fan of David moreso now. June and his episodes just had that nice, quiet sensual quality. I would love to get the Mill Creek 100 episode set, but I have too many things on the old wish list

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the 100 ep Mill Creek Set. It's really great for price . I got mine from QVC for $27 with tax & shipping included so that comes out to 27 cents an ep. Unf I had 82 of the eps already so for me it was like 1.50 per new ep. But to me that's still a great deal. Also it gave me a chance to get rid of duplicates that were on VHS. Some of the Mill Creek eps have commercials. If you can find a way to get it IMHO I'd do it.
David was my favorite Nelson too. But I liked them all. I really love the eps with David & June. A really good one with them is Trip Trap where she tricks David into taking her on a trip to Hawaii.

I'll have to check out prices at different sites, but mainly at Amazon (since I do a lot of stuff online that gets rewarded with Amazon gc's). Right now I have the Platinum collection, plus a single disc Christmas and the official Nelson Family Presents collection.
I love the episode where June is really determined to get a certain lamp for their new apt.

Yeah, that episode may possibly be the most laid back episode I have ever watched of a television series. So casual, it's like real life happening before your very eyes. One of my real gripes with sitcoms is that plots like you see in them just do not happen to the average family week in, week out. With Ozzie and Harriet, they're doing things that the average family actually do every week... argue, laugh, love, cook, clean! With the exception of episodes like "The Circus," where David and Ricky perform on a trapeze, the average family can really relate to it. The plot of the lamp episode is just that... all about the lamp. Not one ounce of suspense or slapstick... just contemplating purchasing a lamp... and then buying it. End of episode. Nothing remarkable happens, but it's still great television! Over 400 episodes of this show were actually produced and aired over 14 years. In my eyes, longevity = success. This is REAL reality TV, folks.
OH Nuts! 03-23-2008, 02:15 PM Yes June and The Lamp is a great ep too. I really like all the ones with David & June. As I said he's my fav Nelson!
Jude The Obscure 03-24-2008, 03:51 PM Do you think David got the raw end of the deal when all the teen idol attention went to Ricky?
OH Nuts! 03-24-2008, 04:00 PM not really. He was more introverted so I don't think he would have liked the attention. Also he was handsome in his own right so I'm sure he had plenty of admirers.
Jude The Obscure 03-24-2008, 04:19 PM My g/f is a big Ricky Nelson fan and I do like him and his music, but since rediscovering O&H, I just admire David's style and his sarcasm too. And yes, he was handsome.
OH Nuts! 03-25-2008, 12:44 PM Yeah, he's a great guy and in real life really held the clan together after Ozzie's passing. And what a trip it was to see him in John Water's Cry Baby . Love the fact that Dave & Sam narrate in The Best Of 24 DVD set. The Circus ep is to die for.
Jude The Obscure 03-27-2008, 12:13 AM Do you have High School USA on DVD, Rich? It's a cheesy '80s TV movie but worth having for the nostalgia value of all those stars from '50s sitcoms (and now '80s sitcoms LOL).

No...but I just looked it up & saw David Nelson is in it (not to mention the other fab stars from the 50s) so I'm gonna buy it first chance I get. Thanks for letting me know abt the movie Jude!
Jude The Obscure 03-27-2008, 12:32 AM You're welcome Rich!
Janice 03-30-2008, 01:55 AM Interesting thread. I feel like I was eavesdropping, lol. I remember this show a bit when I was a kid. I would really like to see it now. Does it air anymore? I'm not into buying DVDs. It's not about money. I don't like collecting anything. I read a book, then give it away. I just moved, and I'm trying to thin my house out now. I'm paying now for my sins of going to all those Tupperware, crystal, candle, and other parties, lol.
The show sounds like my kind of show. Nice and laid back. I've been getting into Leave It To Beaver, and I could watch Ward and June all day. I love their scenes. I imagine Ozzie and Harriet's scenes were great because they were really married.
Regarding the question of whether Ricky got more attention as a teen idol, I would have to say yes. I think if a person is an avid fan of the show, they may see it differently; however, as someone who isn't familiar with the show, Ricky was the man! Really, he was a huge teen idol. David was handsome, I agree, yet Ricky was off the charts. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it appears from where I sit, that Ricky was groomed for the teen idol role.
Great description of the lamp episode, TV DVD Fan. I take it David was married on the show. That was Reality TV folks. Strange coincidence with the names Ozzie and Ozzy (Osbourne). Two families on tv, and how many people are named Ozzie, regardless of how it's spelled.

How about renting the DVDs from Netflix?;)

I knew there was a reason I liked you. ;) This is what Netflix has available. Any suggestions for a newbie to the show?

Hi Janice. I have them all and they're all good-esp the last one (24 ep green cover). I think this last set was Nelson approved and what is neat on it is there are a few eps where Sam Nelson (Rick's youngest son) and David provide commentary. You may get some overlap between all 3 sets but you should end up with 35+ distinct eps.
The best set of all is the 100 ep 12 DVD Mill Creek Set. If this becomes avail. on Netflix GO FOR IT.
So...my advice....as an O & H freak.. Get the 24 ep first, the 25 ep set 2nd, and the last one (looks like one of the Alphas 4 ep sets). BTW, A Lamp For David And June is a great ep on this set.

 Oh Janice, I feel for you. Those parties are the worst. When I get invited, I bow out. No thank you. I don't need more "dust collectors"...
Just had to respond to that. ;)

I hear you on that Irene. It's for the youngsters. I never go to them anymore. Back in the day though, I was a real sucker for all of those parties. As a result, I have so much crystal pieces, including loads of glasses, you name it. I will say that Tupperware holds up for decades. I actually went to a "Pocketbook Party" once. Another one was called, "Christmas Around The World". That was the name of the company. I could decorate five houses for Christmas.

 OH MY GOD! a pocketbook party??? Never heard of that. Nowadays they make parties for anything I guess. Oooo, that Christmas Around the World party sounds like one I would have spent $$$$ on. :faint: Just a few months ago my sister had one at her house, can't recall for what, but I said, "No thank you." Tupperware, I will give props to; their products last and they are NOT dust collectors.

Oh, yes, the other thing I want to say Janice is that the show was on for a long time -14 Seasonss - so as you watch all 4 discs you'll see distinct differences in style and in characters, as the boys moved from young adolescence to college where they were in fraternitys and worked at a law office (this must have been the Ozzie influence as he was studying law at Rutgers when his band took off in the late 20's/early 30's - he just stopped short of taking the bar), and their married life. My favorite seasons are 4 on.
Janice 04-12-2008, 06:00 PM I enjoyed all six episodes of the show. It really is a nice, sweet show. Ozzie has the coolest personality, while Harriet is the calming influence in the house. I noticed that they all improved in their acting as time went on. The set I watched, David was sort of front and center. Once Ricky got older, he seemed to be the star, although I'm basing that on just the episodes I saw. I will order another batch.
I wonder if David watches the show these days. I have a hard time even looking at photos and home movies of my lost loved ones, but everyone's different.

There are two eps I really like on this disc. One is "Captain Salty and The Submarine" and "Ricky The Drummer". What's great about "Ricky The Drummer" is this is where he does his first song "I'm Walking"--of course there are many many eps down the road with Ricky singing--but here is where it started--and BTW, its just an all around great ep and I enjoy seeing all the Nelsons singing in the end.

I really enjoyed, 'Ricky The Drummer' as well. It was great seeing them all perform together. They look like such a happy family. Ricky was so handsome. The submarine episode was fun too. Ozzie was like a little kid in that episode, lol. It's really a terrific show, and it's no wonder that it lasted so long.

Now you know why I'm so fond of the show. On Disc 2 "Tutti Frutti Ice Cream" is a fun ep that turns up A LOT on the DVD releases. On #3 "The Circus is great and Ricky and Dave do their own stunts! "The Fraternity Rents A Room" is another ep that turns up A LOT on the releases, and has Wally Cox playing a taskmaster professor. On #4 "The Ballerina" is a blast as the frat brothers can be seen in a scene trying to do ballet. And this disc has "The Game Room" #435 - the last ep in the series. Have fun watching! I always do!

love seeing all those episodes and esp "The Game Room", cuz that's in color! :D
Dusty's Fan 04-14-2008, 08:14 PM I like all of the later season episodes, with David at the law firm and Ricky in college -- with interesting supporting actors like Wally, Kris, and June. (I love it when June says to David, "You better!")
But probably my favorite episode that has appeared on DVD is "A Cruise for Harriet" from Season 6 (1958), with beautiful Penny Edwards (reportedly once involved with Ronald Reagan) and Joseph Kearns (best known as "Mr. Wilson" from "Dennis the Menace"). Great storyline and funny!

Yes, that's a cute ep with the ship that never sails and poor Ozzie getting things mixed up with another Miss Nelson. With "Mr. Wilson" as the purser!

Correct as usual, rich! I enjoyed watching "The Prowler" in color, and I'm planning on watching the final episode of the set (and the series) soon, after wrapping up a few odds and ends on the rest of the discs.
