I think if Gloria was never cast, I don't think AITF, would've really lost a step. The best part of this show was the dynamic between Archie and Mike.

How could Mike have been cast if he wasn't married to Gloria? Brian Damage 03-20-2008, 08:53 PM So, should Mike have been Archie's son instead? How could Mike have been cast if he wasn't married to Gloria? He could've been a long lost relative of Edith's or a neighbor or a housemate. Ireneparalegal 03-20-2008, 09:20 PM He could've been a long lost relative of Edith's or a neighbor or a housemate. Oooo yeah, he could have rented a room out from the Bunkers. Gloria kind of got on my nerves sometimes. I could have done without the whining and crying she did. Also her spilling out random facts (like Thelma on Good Times) got to me. Basically any Norman Lear show where that was done was so damn annoying. Too much PSA. I could be wrong, but Gloria was whining and Edith just smacked her. I remember that part clearly, but don't remember the episode name. I did bring that up in the beginning of this thread, but Brian said Michael could have been a neighbor or a housemate in the Bunker's home. The Bunkers would not have ever had a daughter. Yes, I remember Edith slapping Gloria at least once. It was the episode where Edith was almost raped. I couldn't remember the exact season or ep # so I looked it up. Details below (from Wikipedia) Season 8 Episode #159 "While Edith is home alone – Archie, Mike and Gloria were planning a surprise party for her 50th birthday – she is visited by a man claiming to be a police detective, searching for a rapist. However, he soon reveals he is the rapist and attempts to sexually assault her! Edith eventually manages to fight her attacker off and runs crying into Archie's arms. (The instant that Edith outwits and escapes from her attacker caused the loudest audience cheering in the entire series.) Two weeks later, Edith remains shaken by her ordeal and refuses to identify the man. Gloria eventually tells Edith that if she doesn't, the police will have no choice but to drop any charges against him. Only after Edith slaps Gloria (for calling her selfish) does she snap out of her shaken mood." Brian Damage 03-21-2008, 12:17 AM Yes, I remember Edith slapping Gloria at least once. OH Nuts! 03-21-2008, 12:22 AM Regarding the Gloria character, the show is so DEAR to me its hard to imagine it any other way but of course it could have been. Clever writers and producers could have come up with other permutations I'm sure--where there would be no Gloria. But the show WITHOUT Archie or Edith would be unthinkable. PlayOn 03-21-2008, 01:10 AM I guess I'm the only one where who liked Gloria. Sure, she was a little on the slow side, like Mike, but I still liked her. I couldn't stand Mike, tho. :puke: The only time I liked him is when he and Archie got into it. lol. mstewart 03-21-2008, 01:27 AM The thing about the Gloria character I liked was she brought out a tender side in Archie in their tender scenes together. The episode when Archie went in her room to comfort her after she miscarried had me in tears and in the episode when she found out she was pregnant when he comfort her after Mike ran out of the house. The latter I was bawling on that one. On the other hand she was at times disrespectful to Archie and Edith especially in the episode Battle of the Month when she told Archie how narrow minded he was and Edith was nothing and her whole life is centered around Archie. She should had been kicked out of the house for that type of behavior. Mike was a jerk who popped off every chance he got. I loved the episode when they played the honesty game and he found out that he wasn't all that. I loved it. He was a jerk and treated Gloria like she was stupid. Sophia's Wrinkles 03-21-2008, 05:25 AM If there was no Gloria, there would be no dynamic between Archie and Mike. The reason he fought with Mike so vehemently was because he hated the fact that his daughter was married to this guy who he disagreed with about everything. Half of what they fought about was about Gloria, the marriage, and eventually the baby anyway. Scoobiedoo30 03-21-2008, 01:07 PM and another thing if there was no Gloria there would be no Little Joey Ireneparalegal 03-21-2008, 03:22 PM Yes, I remember Edith slapping Gloria at least once. OH Nuts! 03-21-2008, 06:04 PM I guess I'm the only one where who liked Gloria. Sure, she was a little on the slow side, like Mike, but I still liked her. I couldn't stand Mike, tho. :puke: The only time I liked him is when he and Archie got into it. lol. I'll take Gloria over the Meathead any day too. She was more real. Whiny but real. Mike was not always the free-wheeling liberal he liked to paint himself out to be. There were at least 2 eps I can remember off the top of my head where his thinking or actions imply, that in the final analysis, he believes men are more competant or superior to women. Ireneparalegal 03-21-2008, 06:07 PM Mike's yelling and screaming got on my nerves too. PlayOn 03-21-2008, 06:48 PM I really couldn't stand Mike in the episode where his college buddy comes over and he talks to Gloria like she wasn't a person but a friggin' dictionary or something, using big words nobody could understand. Brian Damage 03-21-2008, 09:10 PM I really couldn't stand Mike in the episode where his college buddy comes over and he talks to Gloria like she wasn't a person but a friggin' dictionary or something, using big words nobody could understand. Mike's education was the beginning of the end of their marriage. He became too arrogant and snobbish. OH Nuts! 03-21-2008, 10:35 PM And when it comes to criticism he can dish it out but can't take it. See ep below Ep #69 November 3, 1973 The Games Bunkers Play Edith, the Stivics, Lionel Jefferson and the Lorenzos play an adult board game called Group Therapy, where they must share their real feelings and opinions about each other. During the game, Mike doesn't like what he learns about himself or how others really feel about him. When things aren't going his way, he childishly quits the game and rants about how Archie undeservedly has plenty of opportunities despite his bigotry. He cries on Edith's shoulder but surprisingly, Edith is unsympathetic. Instead, she offers Mike insight regarding Archie's insulting attutude toward him. So very true...that episode was very annoying...but funny. OH Nuts! 03-21-2008, 10:49 PM Lets start a "We Love The Meathead" fanclub LOL! Brian Damage 03-21-2008, 10:59 PM Lets start a "We Love The Meathead" fanclub LOL! I'm with you! ;) Abbie 07-28-2008, 10:33 PM I like Sally Strutters as an actress and I liked the character of Gloria. There were a lot of women's issues that were never discussed on TV before that time. To balance out things like Edith's menopause, they needed the other end of the spectrum with Gloria's "Battle of the Month" and other issues. Besides, who would Mike have been caught making out with all those times? :) catlover79 07-28-2008, 11:49 PM Yes, Gloria's whining was a bit too much, but Sally Struthers was and is a good actress. I really enjoyed her role as Babette the neighbor on Gilmore Girls. At least Archie never had to rent out a room to THIS guy: MikeLutton 07-30-2008, 12:47 AM gloria wasnt needed at all sure he can find a decent woman make out with someone better then her BuddyHinton 08-03-2008, 10:50 PM Anyone who doesn't think Gloria was necessary is missing a very strong dynamic. The fact that Meathead was with his little goil added an element to the fire that just some random "being a relative of Ediths" couldn't have added. I don't think her role was pivotal in terms of dialogue rather in terms of what she represented. I cannot think of a more interesting show dynamic with such a small regular cast. I would rather watch Edith, Archie, Meathead, and Gloria play Monopoly than watch an action movie:) Schmoopie 08-03-2008, 11:00 PM I think the thing that made the antics between Mike and Archie so funny was the fact that Mike was married to Archie's daughter and there was no getting rid of Mike. The one episode I liked with Mike and Archie was when Gloria and Mike were getting ready to move to California. Mike and Archie had that heart to heart talk and Mike said "I love you" or something like that. That was sweet! As for Gloria, I liked her but she was very annoying when she would cry! |
